The Contented Sole in Scottish Borders

We have just been today for a couple of drinks with our Grandson Lovely welcoming pub nice selection of beers to choose from. A really lovely friendly person behind the bar as well. Locals mainly in the pub all knew each other. If we are in area will be going again

A excellent pub with great food on offer in very welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, the meals we ordered were 1st class with lovely staff on hand

Totally disappointed 1 meal out of 4 was passable which was the fish and chips so if your going to eat there I would not recommend anything other than fish and chips or steak pie but unfortunately they never had any steak pie left. I had a seafood platter which was disgusting everything was deep fried 2 prawns 2 tiny bits of haddock,white bait which was gross and frozen defrosted shrimp totally rubbish. Someone had salmon and dill fishcakes which they hardly ate and another member of the party had scampi which was OK nothing great. We complained before paying the bill and what annoyed me more was that they were not bothered disgusting food and disgusting service will not be back. So disappointing.

Excellent food. Best Scampi in the world! Back again yesterday for lunch on the way back from Chatsworth. Was definitely worth the detour. Still a great meal.

We both had the seafood selection which was called a light bite but it was anything but. Very filling and beautifully cooked and presented.

Not our first time here, but this will be our last. Six of us dined here between 7pm and 10pm... yes, that's how long a three course meal took. Various complaints including, but not limited to Tepid food Slow service Cold breezy dining area Mixed results on the food quality... The £160 bill was paid without complaint, but we shall not return.

Came here for lunch after a wander around the fishing village. Pub very welcoming. Lovely waitress who was very helpful and sorted a table for us. Meals were nice and most enjoyed them. My dad didn’t enjoy his pie which wasn’t really a pie just a small bowl with meat and gravy and a small piece of pastry on top. The actual pub needs a bit of a revamp as the tables abs chairs didn’t really go with the look of the pub. We would come back as it was a nice place to come and eat.

We had a warm welcome at this pub. We arrived for dinner, and the table was reserved, but they had a power cut and had 2 fryers working only. They warned it could be a while. The 2 young ladies up in the restaurant were very friendly and well-mannered and could not stop apologising about our wait. What even made my day I got a gluten-free chicken curry with rice and chips. Just to say thank you for feeding us with minimal power.

Very disappointed. Two young girls upstairs weren’t very attentive more interested in their phones. Had a starter and light bite meal . Had gammon steak which was more like a slice of bacon asked for egg with my gammon to be told there were no eggs unbelievable. Won’t be back .

Very basic and limited menu. Expected a little more from the fishcakes. Given the name.

Nice little restaurant, we got the seafood platter which was really good, it was enough for 2 people for lunch. We parked on the front near the co-op, parking was free. Nice little fishing village, not much there but nice place to visit.

Ordered the lasagne, I’ve never had lasagne served in such a small bowl, the sauce was far to thick and quite sickly, far too much cheddar on the top, barely any pasta and the sauce was quite tasteless.

The food was okay for the price and the two staff were friendly. However - I feel this pub has gone for a “low cost high profit” strategy with the food service. There seemed to be two very young members of staff who were very polite and friendly but it was a massive ask to get them to manage that top floor by themselves. They really needed a 3rd person at least for that volume of customers. As a result everything took a lot longer than it should have. Far longer. I am not blaming the two young staff for this - I am blaming the pub management for what appears to be a “minimise costs to the absolute bare minimum and maximise profits” approach. It was okay but I’m not going back

4 uncounted soles was refused because we had not booked, plenty of tables free.if that the way you treat walk-ins

I previously did a review highlighting how bad the experience was we were served prawns rather than scampi which we highlighted and were told that's how we do scampi we returned the meal and didn't pay for this due to this the rest of us left half our meals which were also not good. The reply I got was not great and I feel disappointed as they were not very apologetic. I gave them a 5 star review last year as they were so good this place has really gone down hill

Worst meals we have eaten. Gammon steak like shoe leather, southern fried chicken was dryer than Sahara, No idea how to flavour vegan meal and 8yr old daughter now has stomach pains from eating sausages. And we made the mistake of asking for a salt refill. Talk about poor service with a sour attitude. Over an hour for mains, apparently because we had starters. Yip 1 starter. Never seen so many people leaving most of their meals. Avoid. Go to the Ship. That was delicious!!

I'm not sure what's happened to this place since last year waited a long time for food and people at next table complained they had waited so long food came curry with no naan bread steak completely dry no sauce option and scampi and chips no peas we then realised that the scampi was actually prawns alerted the staff who advised this was how they did scampi I advised that people could be allergic to prawns and its quite important to let people know this. Unfortunately this meal had to be returned to the kitchen we were offered a look at the menu but as everyone else would be finished we all ended up leaving half our meals and going. Felt so bad for the you g boy serving as he was left to deal with complaints from everyone I feel an adult should have taken responsibility for this and spoken to the customers. What a shame it was so nice here last year but unfortunately won't be back.

Absolutely abysmal experience. Creaky floorboards and a narrow gloomy staircase leading up to the restaurant. Not to mention the fact that the crappers were right beside the dine in area so the stench of logs was pungent throughout the whole joint, completely ruining the entire atmosphere. Come the drinks, My vodka n' Coke had about 2ml of vodka in it. At first I didn't even think they'd added any in, genuinly just absurdly shocking amounts of vodka being added in. Next, the food, we'd ordered 3 plates which took 53 MINUTES TO ARRIVE and in that time we'd witnessed 5 other tables of people arrive AND recieve their food before us. My eventual steak was cooked medium well even though id asked for RARE!!! which i think was done to hide the fact that it was both frozen and showed signs of rotting as it tasted like meat flavoured sand paper. The caustic meat had riddled me with severe food poisoning which then lead to crohns disease. What I had to accommodate my rotting cow arse was half a bag of brids eye frozen peas dumped on the side coming straight from the microwave with a pool of defrosted ice to go underneath it, 4 frozen garlic mushrooms, 2 half decent onion rings and just to rub salt in the wound, 2 mouldy rings. The chips were okay but all in all, come to Contented Sole if you want to test your immune system against corrosive decomposing food👍

Would give this a 0/5 if I could. The food came in a hour. Food tasted like it was 5 days old or either frozen. Come here if you want a bad experience! (Specifically the restaurant) not sure about the actual pub but restaurant was horrific.

Just bloody fantastic, a lost soul in a world oft wannabe trendy theme pubs. Great staff great company and decent food. And above all else a decent pint of stout… well worth a stop. Dog friendly Normal People friendly Eyemouth in fact is a hidden gem of a town, miss it at your eternal peril

Only had a drink but girl was extremely pleasant and informative re Eyemouth. Loved the menu which had a very wide variety of choice and particularly liked the fact that you could buy smaller portions. Would definitely eat there next time.

Superb real pub with local characters abound. Real as in earthy and original so do not expect silver service.b Seek it out and you will not be disappointed if you like real.

Food was absolutely amazing. Haddock and chips was the best I have gad in Eyemouth. Was so moist and tasty. Gammon egg and chips was cooked perfectly, chicken tikka masala and rice was succulent and tasty and the gone made steak pie chips and peas was amazing. An old fashioned boozer that does great food. Don't expect fancy table cloths and Instagramable interiors. Do expect friendly service, cracking food and a lovely pint. Dog friendly downstairs in the bar

Everything was great but we were there just before a rangers Celtic cup final so was getting very busy and boistress but well behaved. Just noisy

A few of us went here for a drink but decided to have a meal and sit outside as it was sunny, I asked the older lady behind the bar about the steak pie "is it a proper pie with pastry or a dish with puffy top " PROPER PIE" was her reply.... Gutted when it arrived in a dish with a puffy top, when I passed my comment on how she had told me it was a proper pie she just laughed and put it down and walked off (I would have chosen something else had she told me the truth). NOT GOOD AT ALL THAT TYPE OF SERVICE. The following day we all went to The Ship I wonder why??

We all had a fantastic meal, with great service from friendly staff. Would highly recommend giving a try. Will go back next time we are in that area. Dog friendly, great food and service What's not to like.

Pop in sunday night while visiting area with a group of golfing friends. Made very welcome, had some laughs with the locals. Thanks for a great night. Didn't eat.

Just had a lovely meal the haddock was really fresh and tasty with a nice crispy batter, staff were very friendly, service was good and quick and a decent pint (or two) of Guinness. Already planning to visit again.

Dog friendly pub. Seated downstairs in the pub separate area for dogs. 5* service & food. We had the scampi & the fish platter. Generous portions & freshly made.

I have been there with my family on the 8th of Dec 2023, today is 31st Mac, 2024, I'm back in my own country for a few months , but I still can't forget the taste , the nice smell of that little white head fish .....I enjoy it so much, it will remain as my fond memories forever .

What a Shambles this place is. Ordered food, it was dire. Supposedly Homecooked but it was still cold/frozen in the middle. Unless you're a Lager Drinker, forget it. Staff were surly and the Locals actually jeered us before we'd actually got our Orders in. They then said they were only kidding. If I wasn't so bloody stubborn and refused to be intimidaded I would have left at that point.

Simply delicious food and generous portions at a reasonable price. Best seafood combo I've ever had. My wife had scampi and said it was brilliant.

Enjoyed a nice drink. Very pleasant staff and atmosphere. Unfortunately though we drove nearly 2 hours to give the food a try we found they stopped serving food by the time we arrived at 2.20pm. Understand its a quiet time of the year but that info needs to go on the website.

This place feels like going back in time 40 years. It was freezing cold, and there was no atmosphere, and the tables were bizzarly laid out. The chips were inedible. My husband ordered chicken Tikka Massala, and he is convinced it was from local co-op. The portion size was ridiculously small, and there was no offer of nan bread or poppadoms. The girl serving was very pleasant.

We sat upstairs and although it's a little basic the food was very nice. Recommended

Had heard/ read mixed reviews but couldnt find many true dog friendly pubs around so tried it and found it to be our type of place . Traditional harbourside pub, brickwork , old photos , memorabilia etc yes with practical lino floor but upholstery looked fine to me . Friendly bar lady , locals and other dog owners to engage in conversation . Never had such huge scampi in all my life ! Popped in another day for a drink but sadly didn't have time to eat , would defo come again .

Popped in for a bit of lunch on Saturday with the family. We had our grandson with us in his pram so the staff made some space for us to have the pram at the table. Very accommodating. Extensive menu for lunch and extremely reasonable pricing. I had the local fish which was delicious and cooked to perfection. My wife had the chicken goujons and she cleared her plate. The son in law had lasagne and he polished the lot off even although it was a large portion. My daughter had a mixed platter which she said was amazing. She had to take some home as the portion was so big. All in all we had a fantastic lunch in a cosy wee pub. The cost made this extremely good value for money. Will definitely recommend the Contented Sole to anyone. Will be back.

Can 100% recommend seafood. Staff friendly but only 1 person serving when 4 were working. 8+ customers queuing. Pub needs a good deep clean, upholstery & floors soiled & tatty.

Great small pub on the harbour. Used it a couple of times during my 5 day visit to Eyemouth. The bar staff were very friendly and efficient. I'm not sure if the restaurant upstairs is part of the contented sole but if it is I'd give it a wide berth. How can you serve 3 stone cold cups of coffee, eat only half of 2 fish cakes and batter not fully cooked. The stars are for the pub. The restaurant would get 2 stars. Hope it's not part of the pub.

Sat at the back of a pub basically, with not much atmosphere. Very quiet but was dog friendly fownstairs. Lady behind the bar was very friendly and welcoming. Ordered steak pie and lasagne. Food is basic pub food. Not thrills tbh just pub food. Tasted good, no fancy extras. Only visited the once.

Called in for a drink but ended up ordering food which was absolutely delicious! Me, my husband and son ordered the fresh scampi which was huge prawns! Never had scampi like it before. Good portions. All fresh. Service was excellent. Would definitely recommend and call again.

Sunday afternoon wanted a Sunday dinner, non to be had they don't do Sunday lunches. Pity as food was OK just not what I fancied

Brilliant place and exceptional atmosphere. Nice and cozy, with an old fisherman style. Only had a few drink but we felt so good 😊. Will definitely visit the place again and try the food too. Also must mention that the prices are more than decent.

Had a meal inside haddock and chips and gammon and chips was absolutely lovely, well presented, friendly staff, and east coast ipa was magic highly recommend cracking place.

Very mid!! At a push… Lasagna was burnt, on being reheated for sure, it was drier than an Arabs sandal….It was like it had been portioned up and left in the fridge for a week awful. Everything was very beige no sign of vegetables or salad on any meals could be so much better. I think because there aren’t many options in Eyemouth they have just gotten lazy and unimaginative. Far better options than here folks.

Had a delicious meal of very fresh locally caught scampi here when I was in Eyemouth overnight. This is a small friendly pub (children are welcome) where they serve food and there is a restaurant upstairs. The night I was there they had a private function upstairs, so the bar was busy. They made a great effort to make a space to fit in an extra a table for me in the bar. The same menu serves both areas. I was made to feel really welcome, the service was quick, friendly and efficient and I ended up spending a couple of hours here. Portions are generous and all the food which I saw being served looked good. I was very pleased to be able to have a small portion to suit my smaller appetite. I would certainly go back, good fresh food and a great atmosphere

Contented Sole has been a favourite place to have a meal for a number of years but we'd not been since before COVID. Bit disappointed tbh as menu the same but nothing else was. It was all just ok n nothing like as good as before. Felt food wasn't quite as fresh or tasty n we felt sorry for our waitress who seemed to be new n kept getting our order muddled or wrong. Sorry to be negative n hope they are able to get back to the 5 stars of previous visits.

Went for celebration meal after moving up to Scotland with family and a friend. The food was amazing as it always is there and we all fully enjoyed our meals

Me and lads had just been out on the stormy waves of the Scottish Borders we hadn’t eaten probably in over a week. However it brings me immense satisfaction to say that the holy contented sole came in clutch with the banging scampi and chips. Thank you

The food is really well prepared, very tasty and good value. Staff are friendly and the place has a real local bar feel to it. It will be our go to place away from home.
