We’ve been to this cafe a few times now since moving to Montrose and it never disappoints. The service is always welcoming, friendly and efficient and the food is always nice. I also love the feel of the place-set inside an extremely old building, it’s a very historic and interesting setting to enjoy a cuppa. The only complaint I have about our most recent visit is that the bill was handed to us at the same time as our food, which I always think feels like you’re being rushed (my husband actually made a joke about the waitress having written ‘Get out’ on the bill.) This didn’t put us off at all and we didn’t feel rushed otherwise but just a bit of feedback.

So- the coffee house shuts at 4 supposedly. But when we walked in at 3.30 it was clear that meant the staff fully intended to be out the door at 4. This is one of my absolute pet hates!!! Most of the restaurant was closed off for cleaning, the woman said you’ll have to sit in this area only -and then said actually you can only sit at that table - (tiny, stuck in a corner. )Oh and they weren’t doing any food now so just tea and coffee. After this welcome , we decided not to stay. Not sure why you bother to open at all if customers are such an inconvenience. And if you advertise you’re open til 4, you should be open and serving properly til then. Does the owner know you’re shutting everything down and stopping serving half an hour early for your convenience and losing custom and good will?

Taking a break in the Montrose area we popped into The Coffee House for an afternoon cuppie and cake. The place was full, spotless (including the facilities), and clearly popular with the locals - always a good sign. It is set in a building of historic origin ... never thought to ask! Apologies for that. All staff were lovely and welcoming - service with a smile. The coffee was made to a good strength and the Victoria sponge was beautifully fresh, moist and light (obviously no calories LOL! 😉 😄), delicious, and made by the owner, Fiona. We returned for another visit later that week and had some truly delicious carrot cake. Wow!! Really liked that one... We had such a lovely time there that, on leaving, (unbeknownst to my wonderful husband) I approached Fiona to ask about the possibility of making a Birthday cake for his forthcoming birthday. I was thrilled to learn that that would be absolutely possible. Fantastic news ... after a few ummmms, my husband chose the carrot cake option. A most excellent choice! So the birthday came. Fiona had kindly agreed to reserve a table for us and we had lunch: warming bowl of homemade soup & roll, and baked potato with side salad. Very reasonably priced and yummy. This was followed with The birthday cake of birthday cakes, and a very tuneful Happy Birthday chorus by All there! .. plus the obligatory coffee. Couldn't have asked for anything more!! Not one for a fuss, the Birthday Boy had the best time, and still talks about how special he had felt. All in all, we are absolutely delighted to write this review. Thank you Fiona and Team 😊 for making a special day even more special!! Exemplary service, exceptional cake (weighed a few pounds!! ... and took a few days to eat it all. Delicious!!) We will definitely be back when we next visit the area. For now, we wish you All the very best and continued Blessings of success! Stella and Eddie

Egnore the negative reviews I think these people think it’s the Ritz hotel it’s a coffee house and they are the most loveliest staff who will cater to all your needs it can be very busy at times and there is a wait sometimes but if u read the menu at the bottom it does tell you at busy periods you will have to wait just like u would do at a hotel or restaurant and u would wait longer there so if all you people who slate businesses would just take a minute to realise what goes into a business to make it successful and put yourself in there shoes then maybe u wouldn’t be so quick to judge my family have been going for years and have no problems at all

Having decided to stop for a spot of lunch we were mightily disappointed, we had hardly sat down and the waitress was at the table asking if we were ready, we asked for a few minutes, no sooner had we picked up the menu card she was back, we requested a few more minutes, however that was futile my order a baked potato with prawns, I a chicken mayo sandwich and two teas,, the waitress returned to advise they had no prawnsafter looking at the menu again the waitress advised they had no baked potatoes, she opted just for a tea, this should have been a sign, the chicken mayo sandwich, (and that is all that was on the plate) was dry, and unappealing, no side salad, or crisps that any normal cafe would serve, the waitress came acknowledge with the check. Drinking the tea was the highlight, leaving the poor sandwich, upon paying the check was challenged, Service and Food was poor. However that said the cafe was busy with locals, we had been here before a few yrs back and thought it wold be good, unfortunately it was disappointing Would we go back, I doubt it, but there is a Greg's not far away

Internally, the coffee house is very old and beautiful with walls of original stone. The service was excellent, but we were approached by six different girls asking what we wanted after we had already ordered. The menu is wide and varied with bacon rolls, baked potatoes, etc, but we opted for the home baking. The Victoria sponge was a delight : so light and fluffy. The caramel shortbread ( aka millionaires slice) was also very good. The black Americano coffee was nice, but my wife’s cappuccino coffee was very poor. It was served with the excuse that they had a new coffee machine but didn’t yet know how to use it. Not great. The cappuccino looked like a very poor flat white. No froth, no chocolate. Let’s hope they learn how to operate soon.

Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday, only to be kept waiting for about fifteen minutes before anyone thought to ask for our order. Waited another fifteen minutes for it to appear, only to find our food was stone cold and hadn't even ben heated through properly. Really, how difficult can it be for a catering establishment to produce two acceptable ham and cheese paninis? Sent them back and left, but not before we were still charged for a lemon tea and hot chocolate. That'll be the last money we spend here though, that's a certainty

As much as I understand it is a cafe, the waitresses seem to have no clear sections and you can be asked several times if you’re ready to order which can be quite annoying. When food comes, I find the portions are inconsistent, sometimes there’s a very small portion of salad, other times plenty, sometimes you get a poor amount of sandwich/potato filler, again, other times plenty. Upon the clearing of plates it would maybe also be a good idea to ask the customer if they wish to have anything else as though in abundance, waiting staff can be elusive, and waving for them in a quaint cafe is not ideal. This may also be down to not have clearly divided sections. I have been a regular customer for years, it disappoints me that not much has changed

Lovely building with tons of atmosphere. Exposed stonework and ceiling beams giving plenty of character. Tables are simple, most with chairs, one or two with benches as well. The menu is great for a snack lunch: toasties/ soup/ baked tatty; lots of fine pieces. And, if your child wants beans on toast, they will oblige. Tea is brewed in teapots and hot water will be provided if you ask. Always smiles and always delicious. Nothing is too much bother. It is a regular haunt for local people, always a good sign. Someone will always pop over to make sure you have whatever you need and to check if you need anything else. You emerge fed and fortified against the winter cold

The service was super quick and we were asked if everything was okay a couple of times. The soup was amazing, as was the sandwiches - very well filled - and the cakes. Our bill was under what we had predicted so to us very reasonable for the amount and quality we got. Generally a meeting place for older females of Montrose as well as families and couples. Not a place for those seeking loud music.Usually busy there is generally a merry chatter in a warm and cosy atmosphere. The coffee is good I.e. not too bitter and there is a range of bites to go with your cuppa. The cakes and paninnis etc are good though I do offer a word of warning: If you are allergic to herbs or simply do not like herbs then be sure to ask before ordering. I had a paninni but the menu did not mention it came with herbs. I would not have ordered it had I known. Comfortable and easy to relax in with out of the way nooks to sit in.Perhaps a little expensive though. The service is fine but not especially attentive owing to being generally busy.Recommended.

We visit regularly, usually for a coffee and toasted sandwich (we're creatures of habit), but many other dishes are available including soups, a great selection of cakes, biscuits, sandwiches made to order, and so on. The decor is predominantly slate and stone, part of which is a section of the original 'city' wall. Due to it's popularity, we have occasionally had to wait for a table to come free, but never for more than a few minutes, and it has always been worth it. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed.

A crowd of us were not impressed with this Coffee HouseAt first glance we thought ok it looks really nice and the further we stepped inside and sat down we then saw the whole picture of the place, drab, dusty and gone with the times.Looks like the place needs a good revamp, fresher looking appearance. There was a full table of us sitting down,we had not sat down long enough to look at the menu when a waitress asked if we were ready, too early M'dear not even chosen what we want yet, and off she trotted with a face on her enough to make milk turn sour.In fact most of the waitresses had the same looking miserable face on them, why on earth are these people in this line of work if they hate serving to the general public is beyond me. Not very people friendly at all.The salad looked limp and at our old age I think we have seen enough limp things in our time, we want fresh vibrant salads.Toasted selections well I believe one of our party hated the Chicken Mayo and said it tasted more of Chicken fat and grease than Chicken and Mayo.Coleslaw was lumpy big chunks when it should have been shredded better.Tuna Mayo looked like it had seen better days looked all mush.Soup not much flavour in itCoffee should have tasted richer not of staleness, perhaps filters need a good cleaning.Last of all the plates in which you brought our meal, all were gritty to the touch all over, better to check your dish washer M'dears and if you do not have a dish washer better to wash them properly as this is a concern for health reasons.A few in our group did order slices of cake, and one was a rather dry tasting carrot cake. not at all to the persons liking.Look forward to our next trip in a few years to see if things have changedService with a smile M'dears, service with a smile.

A visit to Montrose is not the same without a pop in here for a refreshing cuppie with a freshly made sarnie or a really fine "piece".Partner is a great fan of the homemade custard-creams whereas for me nothing beats their Victoria Sponge.Plus it's very purse-friendly and has to be about the most reasonable prices in Montrose for similar services, as well as being part of the charming historical continuity of the town.

The Coffee House is an interesting place to visit with its stone walls. The service is usually quick and the staff are helpful. I have had the home-made soups which are delicious. There is a good selection of sandwiches, tray bakes and cakes and all at a reasonable price. Well worth a visit.

Visited here today for lunch with my mother. Menu is extremely basic, a range of fillings then a choice of what you want them in. I order a sandwich and that's what I got.. No crisps or coleslaw on the side.. Just a sandwich, a little disappointing. Cakes are all out and not covered at all, not sure how this is aloud as people are constantly walking passed and breathing over them!! Services was quick and waitresses friendly. Not sure I'll return in a hurry.

Just stopped in here after getting off the train and buffeted by an extremely strong which just about blew me right into the coffee shop !!Had a huge fruit scone with a decadent mug of hot chocolate. However did feel a bit out of place as the rest of the customers were even older than me !

As the title says the food was awful, burnt cheese and black flakes on the bottom of one panini and it looked like it had been thrown together, another panini which was requested to not have mayonnaise or butter came out with mayonnaise on it, the roll was small and had the smallest amount of mushed up filling on it! We were not given cutlery until we asked for it!We spoke to a senior member of staff and she was extremely rude, raised her voice at us and should not work in customer facing role, we left and went somewhere else and we we'll definitely NOT be back !!

Maybe giving away my age but have been coming in here for a reviving cuppie and a homemadecake(love the Victoria Sponge),scone or freshly-made sandwich for around thirty years-so it'skind of a cosy habit to pop in here whilst in Montrose. And it's so handy for a welcome sitdownafter hitting the shops.Have always liked it's historical old-world charm, warm ambience and havealways found the staff to be very pleasant and cheery, and to top it all the prices are exceptionallyreasonable too.Little wonder it's got a loyal custom base and is always buzzing.Love noseyinground the interesting wee gift shop area where I've found lovely things to buy. Can't imagineMontrose without this treasured institution.

nice food and drinks at a good price, only small problem I have is that they only use one type of bread for sandwiches and toasties so you have no choice, the bread is ok but would sometimes prefer white or another type. service is always fast and staff are pleasant

We often pop in here for a coffee and sometimes lunch. Basic good food, with nice home bakes.Yes it's not a "Lyon's tea Shop", but when you want a nice cuppy and a wee something to eat, this delivers that. Most times you can walk in an get a seat no problem, but at peak times it gets busy, so what does that tell you of it's popularity?? Staff are friendly enough and always find time to have a bit of chat with regulars as well as the visitors. The rustic decor' of the location is fitting and is a nice feel to the place, as it gets visitors talking and taking a more detailed interest in the buildings of the High Street.Go one, treat yourself and pop in. You'll enjoy it.

this coffee shop is tucked in the corner of the square. Nothing much to praise with our visit. Ordered a scone from the "home bake" section but it certainly did not look home baked. Got it already buttered which is odd. Not happy about that since I did not see who did it or how this was done. Will give this place a miss in future.

Have visited the coffee house on many occasions and am always happy with the quality of the food on offer. My husband and I had a mixture of homemade soup which was very tasty and filled rolls which were lovely fresh bakers rolls.Service was very quick and the only criticism is that some of the staff are more friendlier than others so perhaps a smile now and again wouldn't go a miss.Total bill for a soup, 3 filled rolls and 2 soft drinks was under £10 so very good value.Lovely surroundings and nice fresh good, worth a visit if your in the area.

I was in this coffee house couple of weeks ago with my parents. mum ordered soup and I ordered coffee. both of them were terrible and tasteless. the coffee house environment is so nice however, the service is not good. mum asked for rolls with butter and they put butter on the bread with out asking you to do so. the same with scones. cream was also tasteless. I think we waste our money.
