For a place that is slightly more expensive than others, I found food a little disappointing. The wood pigeon was extremely salty, the recipe didn’t pair the flavours well enough and it really didn’t work together. I also got the Sunday roast and the Yorkshire pudding must have been sitting too long in the oven because it was crispy. Beef was good but it had a strange aftertaste. Broccoli was bland and literally just boiled and carrots were burned. Also for a place of this type, I was surprised that when I requested still water which for restaurants always means bottled water, I received tap water. Additionally the water wasn’t poured for us. Also we were missing a menu in one of the menu holders. The service wasn’t very good despite the place being almost empty. For a place that looks really really cool, the restaurant would really do with improving their quality, both food and service wise.

Interesting 'little' bistro primarily servicing hotel guests, but open to non-residents. I took my 80YO mother-in-law who had lived within 10 miles for most of her life, and she'd never been before ! OpenTable said no availability, so called them directly. They had no problem accommodating us and explained how they handle reservations. If they have a large occupancy of hotel guests, they limit non-resident reservations for the Bistro, to ensure they have tables available for their guests, especially as they can't just walk outside and choose somewhere else. The menu is simple, not extensive, but enough to satisfy most appetites. We found the food to be a solid 7/8 out of 10 and the service was very professional and friendly. Prices are commensurate with the quality of service/product and based on our experience, we will definitely return in the future.

I booked a surprise lunch on-line for my partner’s birthday. We wanted to walk from Musselburgh but drive back and management were very obliging in allowing me to park the car there overnight in advance. The service from Judith was warm, friendly and attentive without being over-bearing. The utterly delicious food was served efficiently and stunningly presented. My partner, who’s more of a ‘foody’ than me, believes it’s bad form to photograph a plate of food. But even she felt a need to record the effort and care apparent in the presentations We were told most of the chefs have been there since pre-pandemic and it’s a happy team. It shows in the provision of such exceptional quality. The vanilla and maple syrup cheesecake was, in particular, a delight. Somehow the flavours matched the presentation (last photo). There was also a relaxed ambience in the busy bistro with lovely views to the wooded grounds. I was always going to provide 5-stars to all concerned for a wonderful meal and such good value but the waiving of my dessert by dint of it being my partner’s birthday made a lovely experience even better. My own birthday isn’t so far away and then we can return. Wonderful!

Wonderful tasty food. Service was second to none - Peter and his colleagues were top class professionals, friendly, polite and without doubt a key part of the relaxed ambience here. We had dishes from the lunch menu, and aside of there being plenty of lovely food, was also excellent value. If you've not been here, booking a table is recommended! The whole experience was so enjoyable, and despite us living in Glasgow, we intend to visit again. Well done to all the staff.

My husband and I are staying at the Carberry Tower Mansion. We had dinner at The Campaign Room. I had spinach gnocchi and he had lamb. We both had orange cheesecake for dessert. Our dinner was delicious.

A great find that’s hidden away. I’ve been coming here. For at least 5 years, although the last 2 (2020 & 2021) I haven’t been in, obvious reason … Covid-19. Always friendly staff and the food is consistently good. Those in the know will know how good the food is here. The grounds are alway pleasant for a wander around.

This meal was the best I've had in a long time and I LOVE food. I ordered the grilled vegetable platter and my husband had the Vegan kofta. Both were AMAZING and bursting with flavour. The presentation wasn't just artful, it also contributed to the layering of flavour (so very important in vegetarian cooking). Our servers, Peter and Jess, were both friendly and professional. I found the decor interesting and comfortable. Another reviewer mentioned the paper menus... Which I think are a mark of COVID safe times as well as a fresh and changing menu. I can't wait to go back again! PS The coffee is fab!

Service was good. Food was v good. We have tried fried halloumi cheese and blue cheese salad as a starter and burger as main. The place is clean. The only thing in the room bistro is that the place is not very well decorated. You feel it is like a just hall, there is no theme or atmosphere. Menu is just a paper.

Cracking meal and really nice beers. We had an itison voucher so not sure how much a meal would be as they seem to have a menu that they give to voucher customers as the only prices shown on that are any supplements there would be. Lovely setting too.

Went for brunch and don't think we'll be going back. It's a stunning location and the lady at front of house was really friendly and professional, but there were more negatives than positives I'm afraid. We were left waiting ages to be seated with no sign of anyone. My husband actually had to go back to reception, where he was told we could sit anywhere. While he was gone, I was ignored by the waitress who had turned up with food for the one other table there, so we did indeed try and sit anywhere... only to be ushered away by the waitress who finally acknowledged our presence, telling us all except three small tables were booked (nobody came to sit at ANY of those tables the whole time we were there.) The decor is interesting, in keeping with the building, and great if you like skulls and antlers. However, it is in need of a good dusting and the walls are actually filthy in places. There was food spattered on the wall by our table. We both ordered lattes and the full scottish breakfast. The lattes were very nice, and certain elements of the breakfast were too, in particular the sausage and perfectly poached eggs. Unfortunately the one slice each of bacon was overcooked and leathery, the tomato was mushy and tasteless, the mushroom was swimming in liquid and the promised stornoway black pudding was absent altogether, having been substituted for haggis without anyone mentioning it to us. All in all we were really disappointed; the quality of food and the service did not live up to either the price, its reputation or the stunning location.

We had a delightful lunch at East Coast Musselburgh today, choosing from their set menu. The restaurant is clean, contemporary, and tastefully decorated, which created a welcoming atmosphere. We both started with the mussels in a spicy tomato sauce that also served as a flavorful broth. The sauce had the perfect balance of heat and richness, complementing the fresh mussels. For mains, I opted for the Spaghetti Harbour, which was generously portioned and packed with clams and mussels. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and the dish was hearty yet refined. My wife had the King Prawn Calamari, which was served with a light, perfectly cooked batter, accompanied by crispy skinny fries, a fresh salad, and tartare sauce. She loved the combination of flavors and textures. We washed everything down with a refreshing Leith draught beer, which rounded off our meal perfectly. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and we felt well taken care of throughout our visit. The facilities were well-maintained, including spotless toilets, which is always a good sign. Overall, the meal was excellent value for money, and we left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I highly recommend East Coast for anyone looking for fresh seafood and a great dining experience in Musselburgh.

Literally just got up and walked out after reading the menu prices. We were here last summer for lunch, had one of the best bowls of Cullen skink soup to date, came back specifically for that today as in the area, only to find that for one bowl of soup as a starter was £9.95 or for a large bowl of the same is now priced at £15.95! FOR A BOWL OF SOUP! I know it’s a tourist hotspot, but take off your Dick Turpin masks No 12!!
