Highly recommend a stay at Bell cottages! The pictures online really don’t do the cottage justice in reality - it’s really gorgeous and kept to such a lovely standard. Has everything you need with lounge/diner, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom with double bed and a single bed and even a garden. Lots of little touches made a special stay - fresh flowers on the table and milk/cereal in the kitchen in case you arrive late. Rashieda was always on hand to check we were ok and went above and beyond helping with any requests we had. If you’re attending a wedding at Walkern Hall it’s the perfect location as well - a lovely village/country walk gets you there in 15 minutes with good/easy walking route. Pub still closed at the moment but you can get takeaway. Thanks again for a lovely stay!

Just had parents 80th birthday party there with friends and family. Food was amazing, owners were perfect hosts and the environment was just perfect. Couldn’t have asked for a better place for their celebration . Additionally they have recently completed 2 barn conversion apartments which I stayed in. They are lovely and completed to a high standard, so if you want or need Accommodation in the area, you will not be disappointed. They provided essentials for a continental breakfast and then we just walked 10 yards to the pub for Sunday lunch. Many of our guests had never been there before, but all have said what a wonderful place, hosts and food and all have said they will return. Well done R and R, perfect

We had been trying to get into the Bell for a while, however, it was a challenge to find it open!! Finally, during a walk around Bennington we found it open and popped in for some lunch. We had the creole chicken, calypso rice and roti accompanied with a couple of well poured beers. Lovely village pub serving excellent food with a sociable and friendly host!! Will definitely call in again to try the rest of the menu, that is if its open :-)

What a fantastic experience. All the family enjoyed a variety of delicious, plentiful Creole dishes. Every plate was devoured, with audible gasps of delight. Our favourites were the Creole chicken, Creole fish and goat, with plantain on the side. The hosts were truly welcoming. In all a most excellent evening. Highly recommend.

Simply delicious. The style of the food is less intense than most Indian foods, but just as flavoursome. I had the chicken creole, which is marinated chicken in a delectable, aromatic spiced sauce. It is slow cooked, but maintains its texture. We also had rice, chickpeas and potatos, plantain (which is fried banana that goes well with the main food) and roti bread (which is very thin bread). For dessert I had pineapple upside-down cake, which is unlike other upside-down cakes as others are very heavy and stodgy, but this is very light and fluffy. The staff are extremely friendly, welcoming and engaging. All of the food is homecooked to perfection. I would highly recommend The Bell for a fantastic meal.

After a winter walk 11 of us had lunch here, great menu, pub usual and Trinidadian specialities like the popular goat curry and creole chicken. Food was so good most people had the speciality puddings, this is very unusual for our group. They don't usually do Wedmesday lunch but do do special arrangements for groups. Afterwards some of us went outside to see the public seating and the extensive garden and escape chickens!

Was just driving by and saw they were serving Carribbean good so dropped in for lunch. Old pub, Freehold, listed building with original murals on walls above fire place. Friendly couple run the pub serving homemade Carribbean food and very welcoming. We had curried goat, creole beef, creole rice and a lentil dish, which was nice and great value. We were the only customers, after speaking with the landlady she said they get more customers in the evenings and weekends when they mostly host events or passing cyclists. Really lovely people, who filled us in on the history of the pub. Made a change from the normal chain pubs and was an interesting afternoon. Lovely pub garden out the back and good parking.

It was 6.15 in the evening and we had just finished a 6 miles walk. We had noticed at the start of our walk opposite the church in Benington an A board which was advertising caribbean food at the Bell pub in the village. We decided to eat there and were not disappointed. A very friendly welcome was followed by a delicious meal complemented by a tasty local real ale. Mine host Raffie kept us entertained whilst his wife Rashieda who is the chef was cooking creole/caribbean in the kitchen. A lovely pub with delightful owners and wonderful food - we shall return ! Myself and my boyfriend went to ‘the bell’ for an early dinner. Walked in and felt so welcome and was chatting away with the owner who is so friendly. The food ‘WOW’ the chicken curry was cooked beautifully along with rice and roti. My boyfriend had the lamb and said it was great. We were offered some hot sauces which was great for the food we were eating and didnt need to ask for anything as it was already offered or already given. To join the great mains was a great dessert. This spacious 16th century pub serves utterly delicious Trinidadian curries, which makes a welcome change from usual pub food. You can choose your food to be subtly spiced, or spicy. Raffie and Besheida, and the customers are most conversational and friendly. There is a huge garden at the back for the kids. Three real ales inc. Abbot. The pub is situated a very short walk up the Whempstead Road, past the village pond, from the popular Lordship Gardens. There is a 17th century painting of a stag hunt above the inglenook.

Starters of bbq wings, salt fish and tomatoes and aloo pie were all amazing and left us eager for our main, which were all amazing and authentic. I had read the reviews on trip advisor for this restaurant and expectations were high when I visited. The food was good, although portion size was a little small, but the price was very reasonable. The owners and staff were very friendly. However it was the atmosphere of the place that let it down. It's all very rustic. Bright lights, fuzzy off channel radio playing in the background and the place was almost empty expect a few regulars at the bar. It all felt a bit depressing! Maybe we visited on the wrong day and time, but the food alone would not be enough for me to return.

Bennington is one of those sleepy English villages, north of Stevenage that you wouldn't even notice was there. So it was a pleasant surprise to stumble across this little piece of the Caribbean hidden away in the rolling beauty of the Hertfordshire countryside. It had a lovely family atmosphere with the owner's daughter hosting us with warm chit chat and a lovely manner with guests. Her dad had the same, effortless charm with great stories of the Caribbean that added to the ambience. We came for a dinner for four. The barbecued chicken wings starter were wonderful and I could have easily spent the whole evening eating platefuls. The meatballs were lightly spiced and very tasty. Trinidad has an African Asian influence strongly reflected in the food; delicious curries with goat, lamb, chicken or beef in a tangy sauce with plain or calypso rice and fried plantains. Prices were comparable to most gastro pubs although portions were a little on the small side and there was the feeling that the rice should have been included as part of the main dish rather than as a side. We left reasonably full with the feeling that we have made a wonderful discovery in the heart of Hertfordshire and will definitely be back.

My family of 5 visited Benington Lordship and on the strength of previous reviews booked a table at the Bell for lunch. Between us we ordered: Creole chicken, Lamb curry and Curried Goat. All the meals were delicious as were the desserts. None of us had tasted Caribbean food before but we all enjoyed the range of flavours.. There is a welcoming and homely atmosphere at this pub, the host was very friendly and made an effort to chat but managed to judge perfectly when to leave us alone. Sadly we don't live very near but we all said we would like to return soon.

My friend and I called in here after visiting the snowdrops over the road. There's quite a good "snowdrop" menu on offer. We chose the soup of the day, which was vegetable (they also had pumpkin soup on offer too). It was lovely and thick, with a bit of a kick to it. It was served with a hot bread roll and butter. Now that I know this pub exists (it is situated in a tiny village) I will try and visit again soon, as they specialise in Trinidadian and Caribbean foods, which sound really nice. The family who run the pub went out of their way to be friendly and helpful and checked that our food was OK.

An unpretentious family pub with the most amazing homemade Caribbean food and a warm and friendly welcome. Let Raffie recommend the wine and what to eat. We tried a little of everything including four desserts - great value for money. Looking forward to going back.

My friend and I enjoyed THE MOST AMAZING lunch!!!! Goat curry ( or Curry goat if you prefer it that way round) and Creole chicken with a sharing Calypso rice and Dhal Puri Roti to mop up every last trace of The Flavours of a Seductively Spiced Heaven. We both agreed that this ranked alongside any of our previous experiences in the UK and indeed in the Caribbean. Followed by dessert and a chat with the very enthusiastic and friendly Raffie and Roshedia (I hope I got their names correct) It was a beautifully relaxed occasion. We will return next week to sample the Trinidadian influenced Sunday Roast and then I,for one, would love to try the whole of the rest of the menu.

I had heard about this place and that it had been taken over by a Trinidadian family. Raffle and Roshedia made us feel like we were friends visiting. The food was excellent. We had the goat curry and it was tender and the taste was amazing.Looking forward to taking my trini friends there for some home cooked food xxx

First went only a month after Rafie and Rashida took over, throughly enjoyed it, been back many times with lots of friends never disappointed. Two lovely friendly people, always go the extra mile, Rafie gets me a good Savignion Blanc and Rashida always gives John (hubby) Cassava Pudding which he loves, he also takes home a portion for the next day too. Her curries are to die for so flavour some we always leave satisfied. Nice friendly staff too.

We went here for dinner last Friday night and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavours of the homemade food. We thought it was good value, though the portions were a little small, but nothing to gripe about as they were more than adequate. The apple chutney was delicious and very different. The charming waitress happily brought us more with our main course. We will happily bring visiting friends here for a meal in the future. As it's a pub there is a good selection of drinks at reasonable prices too. It has a good sized car park and is not a huge drive out of Stevenage. Well worth finding.

Top quality pub to frequent, decent pricing, amazing food. Owners, and regulars ever so welcoming to stranger northerners such as myself. Howay the Queens heed. 🦓
