I decided to book The Barn for my Wife and I as we were celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary. Having never visited before, I thought it would be nice due to the venue and also there being a Beatles tribute band performing. I am so glad I booked as we both had an amazing evening. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food was tasty and hot and the atmosphere was perfect. We was also surprised with a dessert with a message for our anniversary which was a lovely touch. The Beatles band were really good and really added to our special evening. Thank you for having us, we will definitely be returning!

Disappointing! Came here a couple of years ago for a wedding and the food was lovely. This visit was for a smaller family do. Due to intolerances of egg and dairy I chose vegan options. Everyone else’s meals came out first and they looked good, lots of food on the plate. Side plates of cauliflower cheese came out too which I couldn’t have. My vegan meal was a huge let down! A so called vegan stack which quite frankly was more of a splat, a few thin slices of vegetables, certainly no where near any kind of value for money. It could have had a few new potatoes and maybe some green beans or asparagus to actually make it a meal, because it was more like a starter! The brownie was ok. I’m still hungry and not impressed!

We went for brunch and were welcomed upon entrance very warmly by the staff. As soon as we sat down we were poured a glass of cold water, a lovely welcome. We ordered one full English and one pancake with fruit. The full English was nice and well executed, they mistakenly forgot the hash browns so I had to ask, but staff was super kind and fast in fixing the little hiccup, and the hash brown were remarkably good as were homemade. The location is super welcoming and very rustic, as it’s located in an old barn with the intriguing wood structure from back when it supposedly was built. Prices are fair for the service and the quality of food. Super recommended for brunch as it usually is quiet at that time and you get the most of you the place.

This was a belated birthday meal with family for my wife. We had a function room which was very nice as was the venue in general. Food was distinctly average and in some cases not hot, I had a completely overcooked and tough burger...... What was disappointing was on inspection the wine bottles were from a budget supermarket with their brand name clearly labelled on the back of the bottles. Service however was excellent, I did feel for the serving staff as they were not responsible for what came out of the kitchen. Review by notveryhairybiker.

My favourite restaurant in Essex. We came here for my wife's 40th and our wedding anniversary. It didn't disappoint! Great service from Miriam and the young trainee(whose name I didn't catch) added with a relaxed atmosphere, where conversation could flow easily without it being too noisy. The talented pianist added to the nice ambience. Food tasty and excellent as ever. Good range in vegetarian options as well. Their added touch at the end by presenting us with two hand piped chocolate and ice cream messages for our respective occasions was a nice and touching bonus. Thank You.

I was a guest at The Barn on Saturday 6th July, for the wedding reception/breakfast of a family member. The wedding service had been a truly wonderful occasion and I was really looking forward to further celebrations with family and friends. On arrival at The Barn, it was clear that this was a venue which prides itself on keeping its standards high: the car park and the surrounding environs are very well-kept and cared for. Entering The Barn it was clear that a huge amount of care and attention had been invested in the space. Tables were beautifully set, the lighting and the general ambience were lovely. I was immediately struck by the attention of the excellent hospitality team: circulating with trays of canapes (so delicious!) and Prosecco and soft drinks. As the afternoon proceeded, I was so impressed by all of the hospitality squad. Their efficiency, attentiveness and attention to detail was brilliant. The gentleman who was coordinating the whole process was so on top of his game - there were spreadsheets! Every one of the team gave 100% - I know from experience how very hard it can be to get everything right on the day. The team did brilliantly. The canapes were super-delicious: our starter of warm goats' cheese and fig was so good (I think there was an alternative starter of soup for those who can't eat cheese); the lemon sorbet afterwards was absolutely the best I've ever eaten; the main course of chicken supreme with a gorgeous seeded mustard sauce was outstanding: delivering food of this quality to over 100 people is a real challenge. The vegetables were super, and well cooked and presented. Desert of chocolate brownie, with cream, ice cream and fresh strawberry was gorgeous. Throughout the afternoon, the team were 100% attentive and responsive to every table, topping up glasses, removing unwanted cutlery and glasses. And they did everything with warmth and efficiency. That's quite something in such a busy environment! My sincere thanks and congratulations to all at The Barn, but especially to all the hospitality team. You were incredible! I live in Yorkshire but if I come down to Essex again I'm definitely coming back to see you. I know the bride and groom, and family, are frequent dinner guests so I hope I will see you again soon.

I hate the feeling of being ripped off, but this is how I feel. The food is nothing special at all. A £35 tough steak you could have bought for £15 in other restaurants. I ordered an £18 curry, I got a small fist sized amount of tasteless bland sweet potatoe & a hard nan bread from a packet. Constantly asking if we wanted more expensive drinks. Would not leave a water jug on the table. Gave us each one slice of loaf bread with our meal, no rolls. Tough lamb, tough steaks, tasteless curry. What a rip off. Avoid!

Sadly the Barn Brasserie did not live up to our expectations, Service was slow. Wine was not poured and left out of reach of diners who had to get up, retrieve it and pour for themselves. Starters ok - nothing out of the ordinary. Loud and noisy young children nearby who did not remain seated. Main courses ok, dauphinoise potatoes undercooked. Towards the end of the meal when there were fewer guests in the restaurant, the staff appeared to be setting up the restaurant for the following morning’s brunch service. Unfortunately this led to a continued period of chair/table moving/scraping/banging which was very distracting and not the atmosphere we were looking for. Puddings were lovely but one diner had a hair in their pudding and did not want to make a fuss so left it on the side of the plate. We were not asked during the meal if we would like further drinks apart from water at one point and were then left unattended for at least 15 minutes following pudding completion with no-one removing the plates nor asking if we would like anything else to drink or perhaps have a coffee. In the end we attracted attention to ask for the bill. It felt like the staff were keen for us to leave so we went back to the hotel for further wine and coffee instead. I could be mistaken but upon looking up the £26.99 bottle of Malbec, the label looked identical to one sold in Aldi for around £5. The table we were seated at was near the bathrooms and every time someone used the hand dryer we could hear it. An absolutely beautiful Essex barn setting but all in all an underwhelming experience and would not return nor feel comfortable recommending.

We arrived after booking and were shown to the bistro across the courtyard as there was a wedding on. This was told to when we booked the table. Our server was polite and we started with a Vesper Martini and a beer and moved on to Scotch egg and scallops , both were cooked perfectly. Main course, we both had the grilled halibut, which I have to say, was one of the best pieces of fish I’ve had in a long time. Can’t wait to return.

We visited for Christmas Day Dinner 2023, we booked 6 months in advance and thought we would pay the extra premium in costings due to it being a special occasion. It was also my 40th Birthday on Xmas Day itself. We were a family of 6 and paid nearly £700 for this experience. When we arrived the table was running late, we were not bothered as we were the last sitting on our table and had a drink. We were taken to our seat. The Barn itself was presented beautifully the table itself was not. There were no extra decorations, just a normal place setting with a cheap cracker plonked on the middle of each space. No condiments, not even the basics of salt and pepper, no candles, centrepiece. Extremely lack lustre and underwhelming for the price paid. We then placed a drinks order to which we waited nearly 40 minutes to arrive. During this time we were offered a thin slice of bread but again waited nearly 20 minutes for the butter after asking repeatedly to different members of staff, who did not know where the butter was kept, so just chose to not come back to our table. We were then presented with our starters. Most of the party had ordered prawn cocktails. We counted 6 small prawns on one meal, with a chunk of iceberg lettuce. There was no presentation, far too much seafood sauce, this was probably to hide the fact there were no prawns!! At this point we were getting quite agitated, our waitress agreed that the service was lacking as was the food and bought us a bottle of Rose wine (complimentary) i looked at the bottle it was an Aldi wine that costs £4.50 (just to note: this would later be held against us when speaking to the dreadful Customer Services team when making our complaint) Then for our main meal. Some of the party had beef and others Turkey. The meat was nice but would not have fed a toddler. The potatoes dry and again the portion sizes were shocking. The vegetables were boiled, we received nothing that was roasted, just broccoli, beans and carrots, cheap and cheerful and an obvious way of the Barn yet again cutting costs although charging the customer a premium rate. We also had pre ordered two cauliflower cheeses at an extra cost, these were inedible and had to be sent back. No alternative was offered. The desserts were ok, small but edible, unlike the previous two courses! The Coffees and Mince pies were forgotten, but at this point we were all too deflated to even care. Just to add throughout our meal service we could here arguing from the kitchen and staff quite visibly getting upset at the lack of organisation and support they were getting from management. An awful atmosphere to be in and certainly completely unacceptable. We were really upset, disappointed and angry at the Barn and asked to speak to the manager. Dimitrious came over and we expressed our complete lack of satisfaction. He explained that they had hired temps in for Christmas Day, this is why the service wasn’t up to their normal standard. All 6 of us heard him say this, he later denied the conversation. We have since been battling with the Barn for compensation and to acknowledge their service was far below what had been promised. After looking into various routes (even taking them to the small claims court) all we could get from them was £75 of our original payment of £700. Customer Services is non existent, they don’t listen and have no empathy and unfortunately lie for their own gain. I really wish we had done more thorough research and not just looked at the wedding reviews. It seems a continuing trend, that they can’t cope with feeding on mass. Please save your money. We have honestly had better experiences at the Harvester and Miller and Carter for Christmas, at a fraction of the cost. It has been a stressful and time consuming process and unfortunately they still have our money and we only have been left with memories of a very miserable Christmas/Birthday evening.

Four of us arrived early and were seated without delay. First impressions - I haven’t visited in 15 years and the place is stunning. The Christmas Decs only added to the ambience. The staff were welcoming, the place was warm, the music just loud enough but not intrusive. There were only three tables occupied including ours. The tables are set beautifully with crisp linens and gleaming cutlery. Complimentary water was poured without asking which was nice. We were asked regarding allergies. We ordered hot drinks which came quickly. The latte coffees were apparently a little cool for the liking. Tea was fine. We all ordered the Large Full English at £13.99. They came out together, hot, warm plates. What can I say? This has to be in the top 5 breakfasts ever. Two sausage, two bacon, two poached eggs with a lovely soft centre. A huge field mushroom and a homemade hash brown with a hint of garlic and herbs. Whole meal or white toast was provided. The bread was good quality. Baked beans came out in separate ramekins. The ingredients were high quality, no trace of grease on the plate. Absolutely delicious. It was my daughter’s birthday. Staff brought out a complimentary ice cream decorated and sang happy Birthday. The staff here really are top notch. Very professional and friendly. Considering how lovely the venue is, it’s crazy to think that they charge the same price as any other decent breakfast cafe. We will definitely return and will look to try lunch or dinner too. First class job guys!

We has Christmas dinner at The Barn Brasserie this year and we were bitterly disappointed with our experience for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was unclear where we should go or sit on arrival and there was no-one to ask or greet us. It took half an hour to receive our drinks whilst we were waiting for our table. Secondly, we were led to our table in the Colony room, which was not fully set. It didn't have enough chairs and there were no Christmas crackers on the table, there was a complete lack of Christmas cheer. The room looked like, what I can only describe as a swimming pool changing room, and very little effort had been made in terms of Christmas decorations. Once we had complained, the staff suddenly appeared wearing Christmas hats and offered to "find some crackers" as if they had suddenly been reminded it was Christmas day. Both the food and the service was lacking; we were served bread with no butter and had to ask for it twice, two out of six starters came out at least 10 minutes before the others, our main dishes were cold and measly, we had to ask for yorkshire puddings - only to recieve cold, soggy yorkshires and to be told the kitchen had run out of brussels on Christmas day! The quality of the food on the whole was inadequate; we recieved two small slices of meat, two potatoes and two tiny parsnips, the Christmas pudding tasted like uncooked cake mixture, the custard served with the crumble was stone cold, the cheesecake was served with what looked like tinned strawberries. It was clear to us that they had tried to cater for too many guests on the day, to the detriment of many customers. The tables at either side of us had similar complaints, with one couple leaving half way through their meal due to having such a bad experience! This feels to me as pure greed on The Barn Brasserie's part and we have therefore requested a full refund. We will not be going back anytime soon.

We had a fantastic Christmas meal with friends at the Barn Brasserie just a week before Christmas. The food was excellent and the presentation second to none. There were a number of dietary requirements in the group but the staff were very attentive as to what they could provide to accommodate these. The pre-ordering system on line was a headache and it was difficult to speak to a member of staff only via email. A simple form to fill in would be more practical with just a tick in the selected choice. The service from the staff was excellent and the overall atmosphere and experience was amazing. We would definitely recommend the Barn brasserie to our friends and family.

Christmas Day Meal - poor value for money. We were much looking forward to dining out at the Barn Brasserie for a family Christmas dinner, however we were extremely disappointed with the overall meal. We appreciate that dining out on Christmas Day comes at a premium cost, however find it difficult to understand how Barn Brasserie can justify charging £119.99 per head for a main meal consisting of 2 slices of beef, 2 roast potatoes, 2 parsnips, a yorkshire pudding and some plain sprouts, carrots and cauliflower on the side. In addition, it’s confusing how the only difference between the child’s meal at £59.99 per head to that of an adult is one slice of beef. The children’s turkey meal was more substantial than an adults beef meal. To start we were served a slice of bread, smaller than a Jacob’s cracker each. Normally I would not mention my disappointment, however on this occasion I felt feedback should be provided. Ww were very much looking forward to dining with the Barn Brasserie on this special occasion, however it would be fair to say that the main meal lacked the portion size and any festive flavourings and trimming’s one would expect of a Christmas dinner when paying £119.99 per head, and is fair to say, in comparison to many venues that serve Sunday Roast, the main meal yesterday at the Barn Brasserie was below average in comparison. I have written to the Barn Brasserie providing feedback, however am still awaiting a reply from them. At the very least they should be providing some level of refund to guests given the sub-standard Christmas meal being served.

Came for works Christmas meal. Great location easy to find car park but entrance difficult to find - thought it was us but met others in the car park searching. Nice meal, attentive staff but no Xmas stuff on the table ? They must have a thing for signs as toilets were hard to find as well! Good for a works do but not sure if would go to normally ?

We came here yesterday for my husband's 60th Birthday celebration, with family and friends. We had a lovely time, we were up on the terrace. The food and service was so good. We were well looked after very well. They came out with a little birthday dessert with a lit candle in it, which I thought was a nice touch. The only thing I would say was, being up on the terrace it was really hot, and the fan wasn't letting any cool air down. The atmosphere was really lovely. They had a pianist playing in the background. Thank you for a lovely afternoon X🎂🥂🍾

Terrible meal. Plaice was dry and overcooked lamb rump medium rare was dry and well done. Were well into our meal waiting on our wine and had to ask where it was and still had to wait for it to appear. When asked if we had enjoyed the meal we gave our feedback and were offered a complimentary coffee which we declined. Not even another glass of wine, percentage off or an apology when we paid £100 for the meal. To be told see you again on our way out was insukting. Definitely won't.

Made a sad day more of a celebration of life with total respect, Thank you I haven’t marked food high as only had canapés which were beautifully presented. I will be at the Barn for lunch today and positive of great staff, with beautiful surroundings And of cause delicious food.

Came here for a family meal (there were 10 of us) - The food as fantastic and the staff very pleasant and attentive, they really made us feel very welcome and looked after. The whole place was immaculately clean, and well kept. The only minor quibble was how hot the Barn was inside (hence my four star rating for the atmosphere), admittedly they did have ceiling fans running but, it was still sweltering. That aside, we would most definitely visit again - but next time not in the Summer.

If I could give it more stars, I would. The food, the service, the beauty of the place was all perfection. We went to the restaurant for dinner but it was so gorgeous I would book the venue for any and every event. The price was not much more than your average restaurant but the food and service was above and beyond anything I've experienced before. Cannot recommend dining here enough!

I've been to eat here twice. Both times have been exceptional. The location is private and nicely set in the countryside. The building is obviously old, so rustic but kept well and also decorated to a really nice modern standard. Staff all very friendly, professional and just a perfect service that stands out as above and beyond. The food now, absolutely brilliant. Both times I came I've had 3 or 4 courses and all have been very well prepared and served. Only small negative is the portions are a touch on the small side, but quality more than makes up for this in my opinion. The last time we came there was an Abba tribute too which was brilliant and all included in the price. Definitely will be coming here more regularly and recommend this to anyone wanting a nicer meal out.

Visited the Cricketers for a Sunday roast with a group of six. The food was fine, but nothing particularly memorable – just your standard roast. The atmosphere was lacking, and the place felt a bit flat. Unfortunately, the staff didn't seem too engaged or enthusiastic, which didn’t add much to the experience. All in all, if you're looking for a basic Sunday lunch, it’s adequate, but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary.

In the main it was a lovely dinner in a beautiful restaurant. The food was on the whole exceptional, with great service. For starters I had the Soy Glazed Breast of Quail and Crispy Leg, and my husband had the Seared Yellow Fin Tuna and Pink Grapefruit. For main, my husbands main was the Stuffed Loin of Rabbit and Red Wine Glazed Leg, and for desserts I had the Pistachio Mille-Feuille and my husband had the Cheese Board. All of these were delicious. However, my main was inedible. I had the Thyme Roasted Breast of Norfolk Chicken, with Parma Ham. There was a very off taste and when I smelt it, it smelt putrid. I spoke to the waitress who took it to the chef, who said the smell was the Parma ham and it was because it was aged. Apparently he had only just opened the packet and it was fine. I disagree. It was off and I have eaten aged Parma ham in Spain, Portugal and Italy and it had never tasted or smelt off. No alternative was offered, no discount or that item to be removed from the bill. It was - we are right, you are wrong. I certainly couldn’t eat it, and it spoilt what was otherwise a delicious meal. For the price though, my favourite restaurant in this area remains the House by Hilly Gant in Braintree, which is definitely a match for the good food at the Talbooth and is half the price.
