The meat pies and the scones were excellent and reasonably priced! The head baker was both friendly and knowledgeable. I asked him about the various selections and he was able to help me select an excellent lunch and suitable breakfast scones for the next day. Ace sourdough bread (about 5 types) and I think the bakery also supplied the Cockburnspath community shop (which has fantastic selection of food and gifts) with bread and croissants. A sign in the window indicated that they were raising money to buy the premises which would provide more employment for young people.

I with friends Visited here last week on our short break in east lothian, never again. I myself work in a food establishment and know the hygiene standards should be kept to a high in these types of places. Whilst stood in the que browsing the selection of desserts i noticed a large man wearing tatty old dirty looking shorts, and a vest top. Ew. They shouldnt be wearing normal clothing with no means of chef/baker materials. They should be suited and booted if working with food. I asked the staff member why is he dressed like this if preparing food to my surprise, she simply said, he always wears that! Least to say i won't be eating from here anytime soon.

We took the train from Edinburgh to Dunbar specifically after watching the show Britain' Best Bakery in Canada recently. The airing of the show was out of date. It was a huge let down, apparently the former cooks/chefs were too high brow for the locals. We took away sausage rolls and a beef pie which were not great. The lady who worked there was lovely, told us of the town where the former owners had a shop but we were worried we could not get back to Edinburgh on the last train at 5 ish, trains were running late that day but could have left early. Pretty town, we may explore that area of Scotland next time.

We thought about picnicking with stuff bought from here, but changed our mind....unfortunately! We went back and bought a sausage roll each (and one for the dogs to share:-) and a couple of cream scones. I have never had a sausage roll as good: there was a decent thickness of sausage meat right from the first bite until the last. My only regret is that we don’t buy any more of them, or some of their lovely looking bread. Very supportive of their community co-operative format also. This place deserves to thrive.

Real Bread is difficult to find these days. With the rise of plastic supermarket bread it is great that little proper bakers are still making proper bread. Not a restaurant at all. More of a bakery with the possibility of sitting in to eat. Nonetheless if a tasty pie, pasty, other savoury or a luscious cake is what you want then this is the place for you. The staff are very friendly, attentive and helpful. To us the fact that it is run as a co-operative and seems to serve a key role in the local community is an added plus point. Dunbar itself is well worth a visit anyway and is accessible by car (just off A1), train (Edinburgh to London mainline) and bus. If you think Border towns are a bit on the dour side then think again about Dunbar. Lots of funky local shops, a harbour 2 museums, a beach and a country park. Interesting find in Dunbar, a seaside resort which is surprisingly well supplied with eating venues. The Bakery is an artisan bakery which produces lovely bread, some award winning cakes, and has a few tables with a small sandwiches/ quiche menu. Sadly the pastry chef was away, so range of cakes and croissants more limited than usual. The chocolate special (an award winner apparently) was delicious, and polished off by the other half in short order. My ham and mustard sandwich in ciabatta was excellent and daughter's scone good too.A stream of customers came into the bakery whilst we were there, trying to buy some of the specialty loaves of bread. Many were disappointed due to its popularity. Having brought a 7-grain wholemeal loaf home, I can vouch for the bread's quality quality.Young but enthusiastic staff. Coffee/ hot chocolate not the best in the world, but OK. The bakery is (part) funded by the local community, and you have the option of buying shares in this venture! The Bakery is a real find (although Dunbar residents clearly know all about it) and well worth a visit, even if just to grab a loaf or two; get their early though! Can they please open one of these bakeries in my home town please?
