The Anchor Hotel in Aberdeenshire

We came here for a meal to celebrate our engagement and had 3 courses each plus drinks. The food could not be faulted - compliments to the chef. Staff very friendly and great service. Lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

Had a lovely lunch at The Anchor in a beautiful location. The choices were endless and what we ordered was delicious. Staff very friendly. Would recommend a visit.

Just had lunch with a relative, fantastic food, lovely service, great location.

Awful experience at the restaurant, cannot comment on rooms as we were not staying (thankfully) Also cannot comment on food quality as we were ignored the entire time we were sat there. Table was booked for 7 (4 people) we were a few minutes early so sat at the table for a total of 27 minutes while other tables were cleared and cleaned and did not receive any service, no drinks order was taken and we were not even acknowledged. It is a shame in this economy when local business are apparently struggling and yet the service is so poor we ended up having to leave. They have missed out on a substantial food and drinks order as well as our return custom . Very disappointing, thankfully we managed to get a table at another local business the Quayside in Gordoun which I would wholeheartedly recommend

A dream place. Pub with some accommodation upstairs. Fabulous beer. Friendly management. A hotel located on a very romantic marina. Clean rooms.

We had just eaten when we arrived so did not have a meal. Pretty gutted as the menu looked fantastic. Drinks were great and staff great and very freindly.

Lovely food, excellent seafood, everyone enjoyed what they had. Great service too.

Regarding the restaurant only… A wow delicious, whole lobster feast at the Anchor as a special occasion at lunchtime. We had asked in advance, if it could be served “out of the shell”…and it was beautifully presented… quite a treat, thank you Gary. So lovely to see and experience a whole team effort from Gary and his son in the kitchen, and the serving team including Jane with her charm and attention. We had heard about the good food reputation and our meal exceeded expectations. Thank you. Always encouraging to visit a busy venue with visitors of all ages and lots of variety in the menu. We had booked for earlier in the month, however we had to postpone at quite short notice re some family stuff. The reception team cheerfully rearranged our booking and it all went very smoothly. Thank you. Our tip is… do book in advance if you can.

Very clean & tidy room though bit small, no TV first night but that may have been down to Internet outage that day Staff very very helpful Didn't eat there but lots coming in for food so usually a good sign. Johnshaven lovely small fishing village. Worth a visit.

Stayed at the house across the road from the hotel which is still owned by them. Very nice spacious house and spotless. The breakfast in the hotel was honestly outstanding both days. You couldnt get a better breakfast for the money and that's a fact. I believe the lady serving us was named Cathy and she was so welcoming and went more than out her way to make us feel at home. A beautiful place matched by beautiful staff. Will definitely see you again!

Food is fantastic. Atmosphere is friendly. Public transport readily available. No nominated driver required. Enjoyed a lovely late lunch.

Didn't stay just the restaurant and it was lovely especially the haddock, yummy puddings too. A little pricey for a pub.

Had the Chicken Kiev, which was very good. Nice pub with nice atmosphere and friendly service. My only criticism is that the hotel website encourages you to download the restaurant menu beforehand in order to save time perusing the menu when you arrive, but the prices on the downloaded menu are not up to date. Some items on the actual menu are considerably more expensive!

Great dinner. We had lobster, and asked the chef to shell it for us. Really tasty meal. Finished with the banana fritter. Service was very friendly. The menu was very good, with lots of fresh seafood on the specials board. Very clean facilities. 2024 Update: We booked a nearby cottage just so we could eat here again. It did not disappoint, and we came here every night of our holiday (shut on Mon and Tuesdays). Such a good menu, and each dish was cooked to perfection. If you like good food, eat here.

We went to the pub for dinner. The food is excellent, the service warm and excellent.

Decent food, could be better. We ordered a variety of foods. The burgers were a bit dry and could be fresher. The sea bass was very good. For starter we had a mixed sharing platter (I forget the menu item name) , mostly fried food but was okay. Good drink selection and although service was a bit slow staff were all very friendly and accommodating

Had dinner was great, seafood platter was a whole lot of food really good. Unfortunately they only had enough for one serving, substitute was Italian seafood stew for myself which was excellent 👌. Place was very busy so popular obviously the Anchor has a good food reputation. Staff were very friendly providing an excellent service. Definitely would be back, highly recommend.

Fantastic meal terrific food and service in a great atmosphere

Myself and my wife were staying Johnshaven for the weekend, although not at the Anchor Hotel, so take the rooms rating as food rating. We popped in for dinner and did not regret it! The location and setting is cosy and warm, staff are lovely and friendly and food is straightforward, fresh and delicious. A must visit if you are in the area and hungry.

There for lunch, excellent food and nice staff. Thoroughly recommend the place (please run a feather duster around the webs in the gents loos though please🤣)

I had a wonderful time at the Anchor restaurant in Johnshaven. The lobster pasta and fish and chips were amazing, fresh and flavorful. The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff are friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great seafood meal in a charming village setting. It is worth the drive from Aberdeen or Montrose. The Anchor is one of the best restaurants in the area, and I can't wait to go back and try more dishes from their menu.

In a nutshell - the chicken tikka curry was bland with no spices. The white rice was bland. The sticky toffee pudding was drenched in caramel. If you’re going to do a curry night, please ensure it’s authentic and traditional and use the various spices such as garam masala, turmeric and methi. It wasn’t the worst curry I’ve ever had , but it wasn’t the best. I certainly won’t be eating curry from this restaurant again. For £12.95, I could make it at home myself and probably feed the entire village. The dessert was mediocre. Biggest letdown was the sticky toffee pudding, being drenched in caramel. Drenched caramel and custard doesn’t mix very well. Plus side, the staff were helpful and friendly.

We had a meal.. delightful place with staff that attend to you with smiles and helpful suggestions.. atmosphere was perfect and the meal value for money. We will be back for sure.

My Wife and I required a place to stay for the night prior to an appointment at a local hospital. We searched locally and found The Anchor Hotel after a search online. It’s a little out of the way in a small village, nevertheless there are amenities a short drive away. What a wonderful establishment we discovered. The room we had was nicely decorated and an ample size for two adults for an overnight stay. En suite was basic but more than adequate. The room was very clean, tidy and well presented and the bed very comfortable, very cosy. Downstairs, the bar and dining area was very nice and homely. The design and layout is really very good. Ample room and an excellent place to spend the night prior to departure the next day. The Staff were excellent, friendly and very helpful. The food was very very good indeed. The owners were running a specials night - Indian Theme - and it couldn’t be faulted. The food was cooked beautifully, nicely presented and the portions were very generous indeed. A great meal at a great price also. My wife and I would absolutely recommend the Hotel to anyone wishing to stay in the area. A hidden gem. If we lived local we would definitely be regular visitors. Excellent.
