Pleasant ambiance with helpful staff. I thought it was a bit expensive for what was offered. The food was, however, good.

Went here for lunch today my husband had the ceaser salad which truthfully was a joke of a portion for the price,it would have been more suited to a child’s portion,my ploughman’s was not much better both the cheeses were tasteless and although the ham looked nice it was pretty tasteless aswell and one piece of cold toast cut in half just didn’t do it for me and the salad was pretty boring with no dressing.

This is a good choice for people who need a bit of space at tables and easy access. Service is pleasant and the baked items are good. Unisex toilets are a truly great idea but it might be a good point to have some signs politely reminding gentlemen to lift the toilet seats, and to replace them afterwards for the sake of the ladies who enter the stalls after them. Customers were a mix of locals and visitors, which is always a very good sign, especially in a village awash with coffee shops and outlets (Mondays excepted). Disappointing that the train can't now be accessed as it was originally, and Queen Victoria's waiting room wasn't replicated similar to the original restoration of this building, but that's not the fault of the people running the restaurant whose efforts are keeping an important part of heritage open to all.

Lovely place, nice atmosphere. We had the soup and sandwich combo. My cream of mushroom soup was very peppery, it overpowered the mushroom. The brie and cranberry pannini were tasty but were overdone. Next time I think we'll have coffee and cake as there was a good selection which looked very tempting.

Lovely place for a relaxed, less claustrophobic cafe lunch than some in Ballater. We took one of the red booths with railway style overhead luggage racks and coat hooks. Nice food at reasonable price. The litmus test of scone quality was a bit disappointing. Either far too well fired or had something peculiar spayed on them as there was a bitter aftertaste especially on the crust (should a scone have a crust?) … and it wasn’t too much bicarb either…. Odd….. and the Cullen skink although tasty enough was too large a serving with a comedy teeny tiny slice of bread. I have to say though my fussy teenagers ate their mac and cheese and beef baguettes without any bother… just the scones were a bit more style over substance me thinks, but them I’m a scone perfectionist!

Lovely atmospheric setting. Unfortunately the food just does not cut it. Great menu but failed to deliver. The hummus open sandwich with roasted pepper had a mere scraping of hummus on it. My lentil soup tasted more like curried butternut squash and was thin. My husband’s stovies - please don’t mess with a traditional Scottish dish!! No red wine jus required!! Odd flavour too. Please, if you’re serving Scottish dishes, please get someone who can cook them! Very disappointing experience. We were guests but if I’d been paying I would have said something at the time. Such a shame as location is superb.

Counter order place. Seemed to be an old train station. They even have a train car. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. The order was Smoked gammon panini, rosted chicken sandwich 🥪, broccoli 🥦 soup and Cullen skink soup 🍲 . Out the back the roasted chicken had Ingredients not listed on the menu (tomato relish) whish is listed on other items. Server gladly took it back and had it remade. I am not a fan of cold sandwich (Whish is the standard) however the roasted chicken is good well balance flavors. sandwich is very good. The Broccoli 🥦 soup is very good however I could hardly taste the Broccoli. The skink soup is good. good chucks of haddock and potatoes 🥔. Keep in mind is a full dish not a cup like the Broccoli soup. The Gammon panini is great. nice smokiness to it. the tomatoes 🍅 and cheese bring the whole thing together. the overall experience was good. Most of the food was excellent. The least liked dish was the roasted chicken sandwich and Broccoli soup. Would visit again.

Booked into the Rothsay Rooms for a Friday evening treat, during a recent spell in Ballater, as we visit semi-regularly..! Certainly was not disappointed, as the reception, service and food/drink was excellent. One positive thing regarding Covid, is that there is some decent space between tables in restaurants now-a-days. This is automatic in the Rothsay Rooms, as all tables/booths are suitably distanced. What an absolutely wonderful visit. The staff were phenomenal, and fit us in to a table magically. They were so kind and friendly, that it really made the visit special. The food is outstanding. Each individual item on the plate was ridiculously flavoursome but then when you combine them all together it’s like the orchestra coming together even though each instrument is great alone. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive and the food itself was amazingly presented as well as being delicious too. Social distancing and hygiene standards were very good in light of current circumstances and it did not detract from the overall positive experience we had. And even though new restrictions of closing by 10pm that have recently came until force could have resulted in a rushed experience, the staff managed to deliver our 3 courses plus coffees with perfect timing. Like so many restaurants the Rothesay Rooms had been shut for around 6 months due to the pandemic. i couldn't believe my luck when I learned the Rothesay Rooms was re-opening the day after my birthday, and even though I had booked to dine elsewhere on my actual birthday, I booked for dinner right away, (booking an overnight stay in Ballater too).We were delighted to see how busy it was when we arrived for our 8.15pm table reservation. It was also good to see that there hadn't required to be more than a couple of tables removed for social distancing, as the tables are very well spaced out at the best of times.Having dined there 3 times before we just adore the food on the menu, and are in awe of the considerable time and huge effort which goes in to presenting such fabulous plates. After such a lengthy break being closed everything certainly seemed to be back running like clockwork both front of house and in the kitchen. The service was as always really attentive and very friendly.I began with Orkney Scallops and my husband chose the Young Grouse. It is impossible to describe all the mouth-watering components on these plates, and the attention to detail in the stunning presentation. Not just a work of art on the plate, but delicious too.For our main courses we each have our favourites too - always beef for my husband, and nearly always fish for me. I was delighted to find that Monkfish was on the menu, and my other half went for the Aberdeen Angus beef. Once again I have to stress that the plates are made up of 6 or 7 incredibly flavoursome ingredients that it is almost impossible to describe in just words. These plates were both absolutely scrumptious, and we both had tastes of the other's.Dessert - let me state that I have not eaten anything sweet for 16 months due to major health issues. Then let me state that the Rothesay Rooms sweet menu tempted me to throw caution to the wind and risk a dessert - first time since may 2019!I chose the Rhubarb dessert, and cannot describe at all in words just how lush the Elderflower Sorbet accompanying my Parfait was!! Visit and try it for yourself! My husband not normally one to go for Chocolate chose that sweet, and he was not disappointed with every divine morsel on his plate. With a Craft Lager, 2 large glasses of Malbec, a Double Espresso & a Cappuccino our bill came to £135.40. The Rothesay Rooms would not be classed as cheap by many, but I would say it is incredibly good value for the extraordinary standard of the food, the terrific service and lovely relaxed feel of the dining room. This is exceptional fine dining at its best. Head Chef Ross Cochrane is doing a remarkable job, as are all of his team, both in the kitchen and front of house. Top marks to all for a faultless service on the first night after a 6 month closure. A very memorable meal - hope to make a return visit again soon.

We had dinner here on 6th March and whilst the restaurant was relatively quiet (7 or 8 tables of two) the ambience and front of house service was first class - neither rushed nor intrusive, getting the balance just right. We were served an appetiser of white bait with alioli accompaniment - very tasty. My “pig” filled ravioli starter was perfect, the ravioli was so thin and light, perfect for showcasing the depth of flavour in the meat. My guinea fowl main was an absolute winner too, it was melt in the mouth perfection. My husband had steak tartare followed by the venison and both dishes were outstanding (I sampled both!) We didn’t think we’d room for desserts but given the quality and delicious-ness of our previous courses, we had a wee break before I ordered poached pear, with white chocolate ice cream and a nut brittle, whilst my husband had cranachan with panacotta. What can I say? Both desserts were deliciously yummy and light, so a piece of advice, don’t pass on the desserts thinking you’re too full up, you’ll miss the perfect end to a perfect meal.

The starters were delicious, hot smoked salmon, ham hock terrine and venison pithivier which was particularly yummy. There was a slight hitch in the kitchen and the mains arrived for the men before the ladies, however an apology and a glass of prosecco each which was more than acceptable for the short wait. Booked for the first time after reading the reviews. Must say that our meal was truly fantastic. Special thanks must go to the 2 people at front of house who made sure that our evening was special. My wife, who is coeliac, was well catered for too. Even though the menu is limited the chef adapted the meal to her particular requirement; she was blown away with the food and said that the flavours were amazing. Celebrated my 40th birthday for dinner and was supremely impressed with both the service from the two male servers who worked the room in harmony as well as the fantastic fare from the kitchen. Red Stag venison from the Balmoral estate was simply remarkable! Monkfish and scallops were wonderful too! Adherence to fresh, sustainable food by the kitchen should be applauded.

A beautiful place, with fantastic service . A good selection of gin with lots of local ones. The kitchen is visible from the restaurant and this was good to watch.

We booked ahead for a lunch for 15 for my birthday. 3 members of the party were fussy children. In advance we were contacted about what they would enjoy eating and excellent goujons and chips with broccoli. Adults enjoyed Beef, Pork, Duck egg Fish as mains. Every plate was cleared and we couldn’t fault the meal or the service. Although we would not normally spend so much on a lunchtime meal, it was worth every penny.

Exceptional food and for lunch great value. Very hard to fault anything, from the very interesting menu to the innovative and superbly executed dishes. 2 visits in 2 weeks prove it was not a one off. Brilliant place.

Bad attitude from the main waiter from the minute you enter the restaurant, over defensive when asked questions, too cocky with comments and reluctant to be helpful, why is he client facing?

We booked for dinner with our parents and just enjoyed the pleasure of the service and the food. A real pleasure to just arrive and to be looked after upon arrival from start to finish. In between food and staff a joy and real pleasure.

We had an absolutely fab Sunday lunch here today. Food and service was brilliant ...our only disappointment was we were too full to try one of the delicious looking desserts. Will definitely be going back soon 😄

Dined at the Rothesay Rooms before in an evening but never had Sunday lunch. Great value with a 2 course or 3 course price. We opted for the Celeriac veloute to start with and then the Sunday roast I had chicken and my partner had beef. The Yorkshire puddings are amazing and they even served skirlie. Other lighter dishes were available and if I hadn’t been so stuffed a dessert would have been consumed as well. This a great find for lunch or dinner and excellent service, quality food. The kitchen is open and you can see dishes being prepared. Compliments to the staff for a well run restaurant.

Very good indeed! We went twice during our recent stay in Ballater. Excellent food (hence the second visit), nice, friendly service, really nice restaurant inside. No hesitation in recommending and we'll be back when next in Ballater.

This is a fabulous hotel with great service and fantastic views. We had the room at the top of the house and the view was stunning. Dinner was exceptional and delicious. The whole house has been renovated to a very high standard. We would thoroughly recommend it if you are looking for somewhere to stay in the area.
