Came here on our way to a party and sadly wasn't impressed. Maki rolls online were £3 and website said £5 but in the restaurant were £7 - I've never seen maki this expensive! Didnt have any sushi due to price. I had the vegetable fried noodles which tasted vinegary (bottled sauce) and 3 bits of broccoli. Pretty basic. My friend had spicey chicken rice which was nice. Wouldn't recommend.

We tried a mixture of sushi, gyoza and ramen. All were excellent, particularly the spicy ramen which was full of flavour. £100 for the four of us, including beers, seemed pretty reasonable.

I went here for a night out with my partner. It's a lovely restaurant in the old Manzies eel and pie shop along the market. It's pretty, busy, has great service, and good ambience. I'd had really high hopes for the food, and yes, I know they are primarily a sushi restaurant, but I still feel that, with the rise in vegetarianism, the same care could be taken to make their veggie offering a little more adventurous and appetising. I had noodles whilst my husband had sushi, prawns and some other interesting things. His food looked amazing and he said the sushi was really nice. He doesn't usually enjoy sushi, so that's a huge compliment. I really couldn't say that about my noodles. It really was just plain noodles, smothered in something akin to sweet and sour sauce, with a few bean sprouts thrown in. So disappointing, so tasteless, and I left most of it. This restaurant is great if you are not vegetarian, but it could be amazing if it only treated us veggie eaters with the same level of love and attention as they do with the rest of their clientele. Ottolenghi does it so well, hope Taro do too one day.

We ordered: Draught Kirin beer, vegetable gyoza, ebi shumai, tori karaage, seafood yakisoba, salmon bento box, softshell crab makisushi The good: - The restaurant was formerly a pie & mash shop from the 1920s and was awarded Grade II listed status by Heritage England. Full of original fixtures, beautiful tile-work, and solid dark wood. From floor to ceiling, it's stunning. A piece of London's history. Worth visiting just to see the interior (you can see photos if you search for L Manze Pie & Mash shop) - The prices are reasonable (Mains £10-£15) and portions sizes are good. In total, our food came to just under £100 for the two of us. We'd had two pints of beer each and were both very full at the end. - Considering this is a chain restaurant and the menu is sizeable, the quality of the food was well above-average - the salmon sashimi was very fresh; the ebi shumai were generously filled with prawns that were sweet and had a good texture; the sushi rice in the makizushi was well seasoned, cooked perfectly, and rolled with the right amount of pressure; the tori karaage was succulent and crispy. Great food. - They sell Kirin Beer on tap! - The service was good. The food came out in good time, and the staff were attentive. One of our dishes, the seafood yakisoba, was running ever-so slightly late compared to the others (we didn't even notice) but a very polite Japanese member of staff came out to reassure us it was coming and apologised. There was a small amount of sushi left at the end of the meal, and we asked to take it away. It was packed very neatly, with chopsticks and condiments. - The variety on the menu is impressive. Not only does it contain the usual suspects you expect to encounter on a 'Shokudo' menu, but it has items unique to the restaurant such as the "Walthamstow roll". Someone new to Japanese cuisine might even find the long list slightly intimidating. The bad: - The seafood yakisoba was tasty overall, but the seafood element was lacking. I wanted to find a decent piece of squid or a fat prawn, but it ended up containing mostly tiny little mussels. It could have also done with more of that smokey char taste you get with the best yakisoba. - The first time I visited, they had Kirin brand cider on the menu. This is quite rare to come across, and I was looking forward to ordering it. But it was sold out the first time, and it's been removed from the menu since. Summary: Taro is a 'shokudo' chain restaurant founded in the 70s by a Japanese entrepreneur. Chain restaurants can become victims of their own success and are generally seen as being somewhat down-market, but I don't see any evidence of that at this particular branch. Walthamstow losing an almost century old pie and mash shop is tragic, but if something had to take its place, I'm very glad it's this.

Simple but delicious, this restaurant invites you to go back and repeat. The food was very well cooked, and the service was great. I ordered the Japanese curry (veggie) with udon, and initially, when I saw my partner's plate (Ramen) I regret. But my food was incredibly good, not overcooked, mild but tasteful. The gyozas were another level. My partner, enthusiastic about Japanese culture, said it was the best Takiyaki he has eaten. The portion was huge. Great place to go with friends.

I met the partner of the Walthamstow branch who was really polite, engaging and talked about the business but also asked about me as I have been a Walthamstow raiser for over 16 years. Now to the service - the service was really good and the waiter helped me decide as there was too many great options. I chose the kimchi, chicken teriyaki bento box and California rolls - this was 10/10. So nice and my partner had the chicken teriyaki which she said was very nice. Overall I really enjoyed Taro and will definitely be back. This was lacking in Walthamstow and now I have a new favourite.
