Taj Mahal Restaurant in Richmond upon Thames

Having gone early evening, we had a great time initially, staff helpful and attentive, food and drink were lovely. We were left to ourselves for ages which seemed a nice touch, until the place filled up and we were totally ignored. Request for takeaway containers were ignored while other tables were served, we eventually told them to forget it and bring us the bill. A real shame for what was a regular place to fake family to, we will not be returning.

Great location. Varied menu, traditional quality food, friendly people, nice experience. Would recommend.

This is a comfortable unpretentious Bangladeshi restaurant. The food is excellent, the service efficient and polite, and the prices reasonable. It is not for the Big Night Out, but is ideal for a good dinner in ordinary circumstances.

Very disappointing experience. We arrived and even after booking our table had been cancelled as we had apparently not answered the phone when they tried to call us to confirm, a very strange booking procedure. Eventually we were given a table after being asked to stand and wait while some other diners finished their meal. The menu cards were tattered and dirty with food on them, the cutlery was very poor too. We ordered some drinks and starters. The starters arrived but no drinks, we had to chase them 3 times before they eventually arrived. The chicken tikka for starter was very rubbery and the pickles that came with the poppadoms were very poor, I’m sure they came out of a cheap jar. They came in pots with plastic spoons! The mains were also tasteless and very poor, worst Indian food I have ever had. The general attitude of the staff was also very brusque and prickly, and whilst we were there 2 other parties walked out, one after an argument about a Booking mess up like ours. In these days of higher expectations it was the worst restaurant experience I have had in ages. Avoid at all costs, they don’t deserve anyones hard earned money.

I ordered one of their magic bags from the too good to go app. NEVER again! The food looked like it was leftovers from some customers plates. The potatoes were mixed with one slice of mushroom and a random carrot?! The chicken curry had two pieces and tonnes of oil..the rice was rock hard like it was heated twenty times and left out. Just terrible. To top it off I was ill the next day!

Went in a while ago and it was poor, went in again on a rugby day when every else was fully booked and It was rubbish again. Supposedly been there for 50 years which is a surprise as the food is awful and its always empty when I walk past. Plenty of other good Indian restaurants nearby.

we always get a home delivery. fantastic food, exactly how we all like it, the strength of the curries can be modified perfectly. meat always tender and portion sizes large. Highly recommended!!

Our food had no flavour at all it was just hot - very very hot. When we complained the manager would not listen, spoke over us, then became very threatening and agressive. A reduction to the bill was agreed eventually but only after a lot of unpleasantness from manager and his staff. Terrible experienc ruined our weekend.

Couldn't have asked for a better Indian! Having ate at the majority of Indians in S.W London - I can't stop returning to Taj Mahal. They really do value quality AND quantity! If you are in search of the best Indian with truly the best service I've seen to date, check these guys out! They're not to be missed!

New Year's Eve had the loveliest meal and very good service. My husband said the haddock masala was the nicest starter he has ever had in an Indian restaurant. He then had the curry with an omelette on top - sounds strange but he really enjoyed it too. The rest of us had traditional starters and main meals and couldn't fault them. The staff was very friendly and helpful - would definitely recommend!

Read a couple of the other reviews and decided it would be a nice evening dinner but really wasn’t great; and it wasn’t even busy - there were only two other tables taken. All empty tables (which was most of them) hadn’t been cleared yet (and it was only 8.30pm). We weren’t allowed to sit in either of the two comfy booths as those were apparently only reserved for delivery drivers. They took 10 mins to bring us menus and quarter of an hour to take our order. They forgot the poppadoms we ordered so when we reminded them, they brought them with our main food and they were completely stale and chewy. We ordered 3 naans and they only brought 1. When we reminded them, they brought only another 1 and when we reminded them again, they finally brought the third but it was completely raw in the middle so the uncooked dough resembled melted mozzarella when we tore it open. Curry was nice and rice was ok but that’s about all the positives we had. May have just been a bad night for them, but based on our experience, certainly won’t be going back.

Ok, so it’s not the most remarkable Indian food I’ve ever had but this place has remained consistent in quality and service for decades. The portions are generous and the grilled meat as well as the curries are full of flavour. Great place to come with friends for an uncomplicated meal or for a take out.

Typical Indian Restaurant / Takeaway. Friendly staff, fairly priced, average food but nothing special. Try harder guys its a very competitive market, and something different (maybe a notch more upmarket) would be really nice.

I don’t often use Deliveroo as my past experience has been of luke warm food, missing dishes and generally sloppy presentation. However, I decided to try the Taj Mahal to order take away. The menu was pretty clear and I picked a selection of grill, sides and curry. The food arrived on time and was still hot which was great! My partner and I really enjoyed all of the dishes and finished the lot. It tasted freshly cooked and not oily like some Indian restaurants. We would definitely order the same again and be inclined to try eating in the restaurant next time to see how the service stands up. Worth a good if you want a good, tasty, non greasy Indian. Thumbs up!

The restaurant has recently opened and it brings a really attentive atmosphere to its customers. The staff we're all really friendly and accommodating, the menu was extensive but easy to follow. The food was full of really vibrant flavours and the chef took the time to visit our table and explain the dish in a bit more detail. The meal was completed with complimentary strawberries and a liqueur to clear the pallet. Overall a great meal in a relaxing surrounding. Would highly recommend.

The mixed starter was the only good part of the meal.

Restaurant sencillo pero bueno, sabor autentico de la India, servicio rapido y el personal es muy amable.

Well seasoned yummy food by authentic chef's. Set menu's offer better value than a'la carte and food is paired well.

Me and my wife went and we both fully enjoyed the food it was one of the best if not the best Indian meals we had, very highly recommend the place will be going back the next time were in London

Oh dear ! Customer service ZERO !!Not the worst meal but not being asked if you would like a desert or a coffee after you meal so you can get other people in is not on !! I booked the day before and had to pay a £35 pound deposit to secure a table for 8 o'clock for 7 people They constantly rang my wife's phone from ten to seven despite us phoning back and being in the restaurant by 7.44 !! Our guest were there by 8 and we were served our starter and drinks We were still eating when the next course was arriving We don't see our friends often and planned to have a few drinks and see the evening out here but the greedy owner had people standing outside having promised our table within the next fifteen mins !! Not asking if anyone would like a desert the bill was just slipped on the table for £195 pounds not taking off the deposit either !! When confronted there was no apology or offer of desert or coffee or any explanation as to why we were not given adequate time to finish our meal or why the bill was presented without us asking for it !! I would never frequent or recommend this restaurant There are 2 better Indians within 50 yards !! Food 3 out of 5 but service minus 3 out of 5 Boo !

We love this place. We always go home waddling as we can't get enough of the meals. The guys are really attentive. I always have Saag and my husband has the Vindaloo or Chicken Jalfreezi. No complaints here!

Ordered the following: Channa masala - chick peas were hard and not cooked thru, could tell they had just thrown a tin into a sauce; Butter chicken - was more like a chicken korma, very pale sauce without any buttery taste; Lamb Jalfrezi - Lamb although was cooked, it had been fished out of a lamb curry and had no Jalfrezi texture; Palak/Saag Paneer - could tell the pieces had been pre-cooked and frozen, texture was hardish with no bite.Above all - the food was not hot, only luke warm!Staff were not able to accept criticism and were incredibly defensive.On the plus side the toilets were clean.This restuarant is virtually on my door step - will never return again!

Did not visit. Had delivery which arrived somewhat late. Standard stuff not badly prepared but lacking finesse. However nothing left on plates! In summary cheapish and cheerful and will not rush to use again but by all means go in if standing outside.

I visited this place for dinner with friends. As I had only main course (butter chicken with garlic naan) and this was my first visit, I can't review the rest of the menu but what I had was yummy! Staff was polite and attentive and the whole place was nice and clean. Ideal for ending your weekend on Sunday evening but I do recommend and will come back.

Absolutely love the Taj , my family have used this Restaurant for the last 25yrs and it's still run by the same family . They never disappoint , eating of takeaway , our friends come from North London and love it also . All I can say is it's the best thank you x

My party of 5 all remarked that the meals we all had were ones of the best we've ever had, with attentive service and nothing really to complain about, (apart from the lack of draught Cobra/Kingfisher, but this is a minor quibble). I had the House Special Biryani- yum! Recommended.

Clear the tables of cutlery and plates rather than take the orders. Weird, Poor ambience, cheesy staff, cheesy decor and dreadful service.Good if you have a guilt complex

Pleased with the overall service and that we didn't reserve a table and was able to dine. The chicken vegetable combi starter was very good. I ordered a chicken biriyani and could not eat it due to frozen veg curry side dish and the fact that the chicken had been cooked on a skewer as tandoori then put into the rice. So disappointed being one of my favourite dishes and left still hungry. My husband ordered a chicken madras peshwari naan and pillau rice, we shared this and enjoyed it fully. I will go back again as I need to try other dishes before I can rate fully. Give it a try and see what you think. Authenticity isn't their strong point but it is pleasant.

Called in here after the England V South Africa game. Hadn`t booked but the restaurant managed to fit 8 of us in. Have eaten here on Match days before and the service and food is always good and very reasonably priced. Its a small place so it is worth booking if there are a few of you.Head of house is always very friendly and accomadating.

We were hungry and just wanted a traditional Indian. Old decor, poor food and grumpy service. Spent less than 40minutes in the place. Not even sure if the chicken had over 50% meat on it. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Welcoming - clean and modern I had Lamb chops for starter - they were nicely flavoured spicy and hot. My main was Chicken tikka Jalfrezi asked for hot like Madras and it was great - just the right spice and nice strong flavours I had Tandoori Roti with my main - they were a little thin and crispy in places. Hence loss of 1 star. I would eat here again and recommend for decent indian food in Richmond.

We had one of the best Indian meals we have ever had in England at this restaurant. the service was excellent with friendly staff. It also surprises us that it rates so low. Both our entrees and main course were delicious and the cost very reasonable for a restaurant in this area.

Shocked to see this great little family run business so low on the TripAdvisor ratings, in my opinion it should be in the top 5 easy! The best king prawn puri started ive tasted portion was like a main meal and the mains excellent full of flavour, service faultless will defenatly be back.

The ambiance is a quite agreeable, but the food was a bit disappointing and in particular rather cold

I have been to many indian restaurant but this one was the worst. First the food wasn't good like typical Indian food and second the atmosphere was very bad, tiny little place with few tables and staff starring at you all the time while you having your meal. I wana be left alone while having meal not someone stand by me and listening to my all the conversation. The place is very small so I think thats why staff have no other place to be so they will stand by your head.

I went at the weekend. The service was good. The food I thought rather average which is odd as the price was not! I would not go back. Very pokey restaurant.

Had one of the best Indian meals ever at this chic restaurant . Had been tempted in by the wonderful smells of the spices being heated. Authentic Indian cuisine brought right up to date. Would definitely recommend

We went on a quiet weeknight and it was empty. We love Indian food but found the food here all tasted too sweet--it was like they put sugar in everything! My favorite dish is Sag Paneer (paneer cheese with spinach and spices), and they added sweet onions and a pound of sugar into the dish which made it inedible. The only good thing was the mango chutney, which we later found out they don't make themselves. Go figure. The service was good, but they clearly need a new chef.

We were staying in Richmond and walked down on Sunday evening for some dinner - walked pretty much all around Richmond before deciding that we actually fancied a curry. There were two curry houses next door to each other but we decided to try the Taj. There was only one other table in there, but we fancied a quiet one so this did not bother us.We ordered the mixed starter which was really tasty - the lamb tikka was to die for. I then had chicken tikka Korma which was undoubtedly the best I have ever had. Very tasty and fragrant. The rice wasn't at all greasy like it can sometimes be, and the peshwari naan was also lovely. The staff were very attentive and polite and we had a really lovely meal and dining experience. Would most definiately go back again and would highly recommend it.

Visited the restaurant with friends and was disappointed with the food. The service was ok but it wasn't too busy. The meals were luke warm when they arrived and seemed to have been standing for some time as a crust was developing on top. Not particular tasty food.

We visited this restaurant last weekend. We didn't book and it was very busy when we got there. Nice décor and very clean. We waited 45 minutes for our meal. Hoping this was a good sign. The chicken bhuna was tasteless and the chicken balti was like chicken in vinegar. all I can say is it ruined our evening as it was my husband birthday. I feel by reading the reviews we were in a different restaurant.

Yep - nice food. Prawn puri pastry was a bit tough by the time I ate it, but that was 15 minutes after collecting my takeaway. Main course was tasty. And liked the coke out of a glass bottle not plastic. Ralph W

Small restaurant - brilliant atmosphere. Really friendly and accommodating staff (we called 3 times to change our table booking, and they were very understanding about it!). Yummy and fresh food - the chicken tikka, jalfrezi and naan were especially tasty. Definitely worth going to if you're eating out in Richmond!!

This indian restaurant is quite simply superb. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and can't do enough to please, this beaten only by the wonderful food which is a delight. I am a regular customer as the food and service cannot be matched in Richmond.

I went to this place with my husband and kid. It's the best food I have tasted for a long time! We ordered karahi chicken tikka which had amazing flavours, we will be ordering that again next visit for sure. The service was excellent, very friendly staff. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

I think I'd read the reviews on here and hoped for more. The service was mixed, a couple of the waiters were really efficient and friendly but one really didn't want to be there and practically threw some cuttlery at us! The food was tasty, but my bhindi (okra) were over cooked and a bit slimey (which is easy to do with bhindi but I've eaten better elsewhere). Our food was also a bit cold, not enough to send back (it wasn't cold) but it was just luke warm, which made me think it had sat out a while before being delivered to our table. The drinks and food were reasonably priced, and its a good Indian restaurant - but it isn't amazing.

This is all about the food. The decor of the resturant will not pull you in but make sure you visit.I had my favuourite indian meal of Chicken Shashlik and don't think that I have had it better anywhere else. The staff are tremendous particularly one waiter who advised me that my meal was to dry and that I should add a small curry to improve it. WOW what a call as it made all the differance.Very impressed as restaurants like these are hard to find. Authentic, well priced with staff really wanting to make sure you enjoy your meal. Its quite a basis looking restaurant but get passed this and your laughing. Also like the menu as not the usual 800 pages in an Indian restaurant...clear and simple the way I like it. Wil be back!

I live in Birmingham and this place has become one of my absolute favourite places to eat Indian food in London. It's great to find Indian food done authentically with great taste and traditional flavours - served by such helpful staff who are really knowledgable and help you choose the right dish. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for excellent food, with its delightfully attentive and friendly staff.

Brilliant food! My partner said it was the best Jalfrezi he has eaten (big compliment)! Lovely friendly staff, and we keep going back!

We have tried many of the Indian restaurants in the area and this seems to be the best Indian food by a mile. The food is very tasty and well presented. The staff are very helpful. I honestly didn't realise that the restaurant had been established since 1966. It had undergone a MAJOR refurbishment and looks stunning.

This really is the best indian restaurant that I have eaten in in Richmond. Very unpretentious but excellent tasty food and very reasonable prices. Waiting staff are extremely affable and pleasant. Not a lot more to say, other than that you really should try this place out in preference to Swagat up the Hill (grossly overpriced) and Aangan (next door to Taj) which is just not as good.

We have visited this restaurant on several occasions now and it never fails to deliver. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. The staff are helpful and charming. The downside is the extortionate prices they charge for their wine. Don't even think about the "house" wine, it's terrible. If on a budget, a few beers would be a cheaper option. Having said that, the food is worth every penny.
