My husband and I visited Aberystwyth to watch our son play football. We had very little time to find anywhere to eat and were happy to find this place with a great outside dining area. We informed the staff that we were kind of in a rush and they took our order immediately. The food came out fairly quickly and so we managed to make the game on time. The staff are extremely friendly and pleasant. Food was great, would definitely recommend. Pity we couldn’t stay for the free desert which was on offer for that day. Maybe next time!

I believe that the best cooks take very ordinary ingredients and create really special food from them. This doesn’t include SY23. It was fun to watch the theatre of the kitchen and dining room and it was fun to taste foods new to me. However, novelty and theatre are no substitute for flavours and textures. My biggest criticism is that although each coarse had impressive assemblages of flavours each course was dominated, no, overwhelmed by acidity (citric acid, oxalic acid, malic acid and particularly acetic acid in pickles) or in two cases, salt. Even the textures lacked subtlety. So, for instance hard crunchy grains don’t balance soft creamy textures they only intrude. Much more subtlety is called for.

We've been thinking of going to SY23 since before we even moved here, and finally made it. Definitely worth the wait. The food was really fantastic, with lots of new flavours expertly balanced. Loved all the cultured and fermented notes. Also very relaxed but attentive service and great atmosphere in the restaurant (and bar beforehand).

My husband and I have wanted to visit this restaurant for a while. Whilst staying in Hay on Wye we decided to coincide a lunch. The town of Aberystwyth is quite tired and wouldn’t be a destination I’d choose to visit. The restaurant overlooks a little square and we received a warm welcome on arrival. We had drinks in a cosy bar area before being shown upstairs to our table. Our table was a bench style looking out to the street below. Not the most inspiring or interesting view and this really took the shine off the experience for us. We had our backs to everyone and couldn’t gage the atmosphere of the restaurant as a result. Service was good and staff were polite. The food was nice, well presented and tasted good however for us, apart from the Mushroom dish, there was nothing stand out. We’ve eaten in a lot of Michelin starred restaurants so feel justified in giving this critique. Pleasant, nice but not memorable and unfortunately did not meet our expectations as we really had high hopes for this place.

You can tell the difference in the level of service as soon as you walk through the door. Lovely cosy area to peruse the menus whilst enjoying a pre-dinner drink. It is quite dark, so it took a while for my eyes to adjust. All the staff were attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. Taken upstairs to the restaurant area one by one, we had a great table looking over at the chefs preparing the food for service. The food was amazing. We enjoyed tastes and textures never experienced before. We also decided on the classic wine pairing, which we are glad we did, although we would have liked slighter larger servings. Who wouldn't? Overall, it was a great evening. We felt welcomed and had an amazing tasting experience.

Wales, where trains are disrupted not by leaves on the line but trees! Forget the menu for a moment, the team in the kitchen and at table are great, organised and relaxed, engaged, knowledgable and interesting. The dining and bar area is comfortable and the music for me was integral to the feel of the place and the food. The menu worked for me and had some unexpected standouts, I shouldn’t be surprised because it is after all a Michelin restaurant, but I can’t remember a better mushroom soup or strawberry pud, each with subtle ingredients that gave depth and contrast to taste and texture. The BBQ pork and two fish courses, all spot on, were the heart of the meal and for these wine added to the enjoyment of each mouthful. (Didn’t choose the flight because there was other stuff I preferred on the wine list by glass). I also had Welsh Dragon Stout rather than water (hot tip!). It was well worth making a special trip for, and Aber is an interesting town.. it must be important because it has banks! And an M&S!! And a real find the legendary Charlie’s store!!! I never leave reviews but I had to for this place!! My husband and I were on holiday in Wales last week, and visited Aberystwyth last minute and booked a table here the night before, not knowing anything about it. We both had the tasting menu and wine pairings (there are 2 options, we had the less expensive one). It’s by far the best tasting menu experience we’ve ever had (we’ve done quite a few in London and Surrey areas). Yes it’s very expensive but we think worth it. From the photos on the website and on the reviews we didn’t really know what to expect of what the restaurant looks like, but it’s by far better in person! Firstly, they have a lovely little cocktail bar downstairs for drinks before your meal. I would really recommend going there first - best espresso martini I’ve ever had and such a chic cocktail bar and setting. The staff were super friendly and attentive throughout . The decor is all really modern and done to a really high standard, great mood lighting and I LOVED the background music. I find that some high end restaurants can be really stuffy, bland, too bright and quiet, which makes me personally feel uncomfortable to enjoy myself and very aware of other guests around us. There is also no dress code which I really liked. Here it felt like it was just us there! Even though both the cocktail bar and restaurant are quite small - the tables are spaced out so well so you don’t feel on top of each other at all, it also gives you such a personal experience. The staff all knew their stuff and were clearly passionate about the restaurant and food. We were then taken upstairs where you are seated in a fab intimate restaurant and have a view of the kitchen with Nathan cooking. Again we loved all the decor, the music, the mood lighting.. Even down to the cutlery,glasses,plates used - we loved it all. And the music seemed matched to the entire meal. Each course was outstanding. This is not one for vegetarians or vegans (although they did email us to ask for dietary requirements beforehand which was great) but for fish and meat eaters you will love it. You must try the cheese optional course it was amazing!! Wine pairings were so well matched and elevated each course - if you have the port with the cheese make sure you have the Warres. For us it was the perfect amount of food where you don’t come out stuffed and enjoy every mouthful. Only areas for improvement would be leaving slightly longer between courses - we hadn’t finished our wine before the next course came out a few times, so often had multiple drinks on the go! Also it would have been a really nice touch if Nathan would have come round to each table to say hello. It honestly for us was such a fantastic experience and unmet by any other restaurant Michelin star or other we’ve ever been to for service food and atmosphere combined!

Ive heard mixed reviews of this restaurant but did decide to give it a go. Took forever to book a table as the website bookings didn't work & no one was picking up the phone when i called. I should of left it there. Eventually i booked a table for lunch for our anniversary couple of weeks ago. An hour before our booking, i receive an email saying that they will be closed due staff shortages. AN HOUR BEFORE!! Imagine if you was having a few people gathering aka birthday party or something, and this happens.Where i can understand that there can be staff shortages & everything, and appreciate that an email was sent to me, but its simply not on. Least you could of done is giving me some options of other restaurants in the area i could attend last minute. Then again, customer service around Aberystwyth is below average, so should be grateful for the email. Terribly disappointed even before i enter the venue. Unreliable. Wouldn't recommend at all to anyone.

42nd anniversary celebration. Just the two of us. We were welcomed to the chefs’ table. What lovely, genuine guys. The food was amazing. The staff are efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to family and friends. We will dine here again soon. If we can get a table. This is a very popular restaurant, rightly so as it is exceptional.

We had an absolutely brilliant lunch here. The food was first class, as good or better than any Michelin starred meal out there. It is difficult to pull out a highlight given the high-quality across the menu, but I particularly the lamb and black garlic dish which was rich with subtle flavours and perfectly cooked. The restaurant also has an excellent ethos of sustainability, sourcing all of their produce locally and an extraordinary dedication to getting the most out of each ingredient. Various ingredients make repeat appearance in different dishes to ensure it is used as much as possible, but in surprising and delicious new ways. Many ingredients are foraged nearby by the staff and chefs. Finally, we were blown away by the service. Due to cancellation we were the only table for the lunch service. Any restaurant would have been within its rights to cancel our reservation and send everyone home, but SY23 stayed open and treated us to a brilliant time regardless. We got to chat to Nathan and his chefs who provided invaluable insight into the passion and care they dedicate to their craft. This is a brilliant restaurant that leans into making the most incredible dishes in a manner that is environmentally and ecologically friendly. If you are in the area you must go and, if you are not, you should travel there immediately!

Top Class, amazing 10 course tasting menu. Very pleasant relaxed atmosphere unlike some Michelin restaurants which can be 'stuffy'. Nathan was more than happy to answer questions and for diners to come up to the cooking station to watch him and his team at work. Everything was run with clockwork precision. Definitely recommend this restaurant, you won't find anything better in Aber!

Where do we start. What an absolute gem in the heart of Aberystwyth. We were welcomed by a wonderful team of enthusiastic young bar staff/waiters/waitresses who were amazing throughout the whole experience. The bar area was great, we enjoyed lovely cocktails by the open window which was a great spot . When we were seated we were shown to the chefs table which was just amazing and a brilliant treat for our anniversary. Nathan and his team worked seamlessly and provided the most sublime tasting menu. Every course was explained to us and was just divine . The scallops were to die for but every course was perfectly executed and tasted delicious. Thank you all for a great experience , you are an amazing team .

From start to finish this was a well oiled machine. The staff were young, vibrant and knowledgeable with a passion for the job. The little bar served a great cocktail and the attention to detail was amazing. The food however was beyond - one of the best tasting meals I’ve eaten - and I’ve tried a few! SY23 is surely snapping at the heels of a second star. We opted for the 11 course tasting menu with a wine pairing. No, it’s not cheap and we did go for broke with the addition of a cheese course and paired port but we embraced the experience that it was. I loved the room layout, our table by the window, the great music selection, the cutlery (so cute), the glasses, different for every pairing. The sourdough and miso butter was to die for and we used the generous loaf to soak up delicious sauce after sauce. The soft pillows of mushroom foam on plate number one were the best…I could’ve eaten a huge bowl just of that. The silky chocolate mousse as well as the yuzu meringue and strawberry & elderflower desserts were all a triumph of the highest order. We laughed as we heard “wow” and “omg” comments from fellow diners and were particularly amused as plates and dishes were noisily scraped by all so as not to miss a single scrap of heavenly food. If you think my review is over the top then try it for yourself. You’ll see I’ve not nearly done it justice.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were very professional, welcoming and friendly. This was perfection at its best. Much attention to detail and appearance. The portion size perfect. Each dish sent us on a journey with our tastebuds. Our favorites were the lobster dish as well as the scallop and chocolate dish. Every member of staff including the chefs took turn in explaining each course in detail. We left on full stomachs and were extremely satisfied.

Dinner SY23 restaurant Aberystwyth's Best restaurant. As we were in the area, how could we not visit this outstanding restaurant. You are seated first in the downstairs bar. Where you can order a pre-dinner drink and your first glance at the night's menu. When all diners have arrived, you are taken upstairs to the restaurant. How lucky were we to get the front row seats to watch the chefs create their delights. Mushrooms Too small a word to describe this exceptional dish. Local Grains - Cultured Miso Butter A whole loaf to be able to dip all the juices from every dish.. Scallop - Seaweed - Burnt Butter Turbot - Mussels - Field Beans Oscietra Caviar - Sour Cream - Smoked Eel Lamb - Shallot - Grains Pen Helyg Cheese - Cauliflower Optional £12 course Yuzu - Meringue Chocolate - Hen Gymro - Spelt Strawberry - Elderflower Chocolate - Burnt Butter Service was very,very good and the staff were super friendly and efficient. I can't put into words how good the meal and overall experience was at SY23. The service from Filip, Lily & Tanith was first rate. Attentive without being pretentious at all. The food was to die for. The turbot and the yuzu meringue were of particular decadence. The homemade bread was the perfect accompaniment and a wonderful way of mopping up sauce! I would heartily recommend making SY23 a part of your Aberystwyth visit.

Ordered father's day Sunday roast beef lunch for 2 and drinks. Meal came but no vegetables or drinks, started to eat and found beef was cold on both plates so called over the waitress and told her both were cold. She took them away and prepared 2 new meals. Still no drinks. Drinks finally arrived after sitting on the bar for5 minutes. Meals arrived with vegetables and was told to be careful cauliflower cheese was very hot. Started to eat and found beef cold again, took it back to waitress and she said yes beef was cold again. By this time we had had enough and walked out. SY23 was not very busy so no excuse. Would not go back again.

After seeing Nathan Davies on Great British Menu last year, we knew we'd have to try SY23 at some point. And we weren't disappointed. Like other review says, there is one sitting for dinner and all guests are asked to arrive early to have drink in the bar, and have the menu explained. Some people say this is a ploy but I disagree, you don't have to have a drink! We did and enjoyed a lovely glass of Nyetimber and decided that we'd have a wine flight with dinner and the optional cheese and port course - we don't eat like this every day so it was a real treat! The staff were warm and friendly and really knew their stuff when it came to the food and wine. In my opinion the 10 course tasting menu is priced just right. All the ingredients tasted amazing and you can tell that they were excellent quality. We had a table at the front of the restaurant and we're able to see Nathan and his very small team working their magic. It was like watching a very well choregraphed ballet - everyone knew what they were doing and the atmosphere was calm - some people have commented about the music but personally I found the level just right, I couldn't hear the conversation at other tables which is perfect! The food was incredible. I can't say more than that and we can't wait to come back again and try a different seasonal menu.

Visited with my wife. We were served 10 courses - it was fine. Staff were lovely and the service was faultless but the food was a bit of a mixed bag. The first course was mushroom soup, which I was dreading, but it turned out to be the highlight - really impressed. It set high expectations for the remaining courses. Sadly, it was a bit downhill from there. Of course, I'm not surprised by the tiny portions sizes, I've had enough taster menus to know what to expect, but many of the courses were a just bit mid. I was looking forward to the scallop, the turbot and the lamb, but to be honest I've had better versions of these dishes at non-Michellin star restaurants and I really could have done with a more than two bites of lamb. I don't like to whinge - it really was fine - but for the price and palaver of it all, I don't think we'll be going back.

Wow, what an incredible meal. Arrived (as the last guests) at 1845 and had some great cocktails at the bar. Moved up to the restaurant at 1930 and had one the best table in the restaurant, at the back of the room with both chairs looking towards the open kitchen. Food was incredible, the mushroom starters was probably my favourite fish, amazing fish cooking, loved the scallop dish. Every course was faultless, desserts were spot on with my favourite dish being the Yuzu with meringue. We went for a wine pairing which we really enjoyed, it also included coffee at the end of the meal. Nice atmosphere in the restaurant and really enjoyed the music (big thumbs up to lots of Maribou State) Can't wait to return!

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. My husband and I bought this experience for each other for Christmas, and it didn't disappoint!! food was amazing. We had an amazing time here! The food was out of this world and the service was excellent - as you would expect! My highlights were the lamb dish (especially the rib) and the first course of 'mushroom' which was the best mushroom dish I've ever tasted. We opted for the wine flight too and were not disappointed with the pairings. I recommend that you book far in advance as, like us, people we spoke to at our sitting had been waiting for up to a year to get their table. If I had to give some feedback, I would say that the restaurant is slightly loud and my hearing isn't great so I struggled to hear some of the explanations of the dishes and wine pairings, but that didn't detract from the evening.

Hi everyone at SY23 I want to start by thanking everyone involved in making my evening the best experience I've had in the hospitality business so far. Everything was amazing...from start to finish was perfect in everyway, from sitting down stairs in the bar, having a drink, every member of staff were very professional, extremely friendly and welcoming, I loved the intimate atmosphere of the whole evening, you have something very special. Then being taken upstairs and sat facing the chefs, watching them at work was something mesmerising and I loved ever minute, the food served was extremely well balanced and very delicious as well as been very attractive to look at. The drinks all went extremely well with the food, I loved the theatre of the evening, being told so passionately about the sourcing and cooking procedures of the food. Thank you to everyone for your hard work, especially Nathan's wife who was the main person who looked after me, everyone else who served me including the chef's and the young lady sorting the drinks were all amazingly talented and engaging with me. What an experience - we booked the taster menu at SY23 after seeing Nathan’s food on GBM and thinking ‘I have to try that’. It absolutely did not disappoint and was well worth the wait. The service is excellent and unpretentious, the staff are very knowledgeable about the menu and the wines they serve. The restaurant setting is intimate and the atmosphere is lovely due to the décor and the open kitchen. Couldn’t pick a favourite dish this time round so will definitely be going back to try again!

Lunch Y Sgwar Located outside Nathan Davies’ SY23 restaurant, a casual, outdoor venue. Essentially, Y Sgwâr is an umbrella-covered, glass-sided terrace dotted with wicker armchairs and high bar stools, plus a smoking BBQ at one end – from which ultra-simple small plates emerge when ready. As we're eating later, we chose just a few dishes to keep us going. We could have devoured the whole menu, and the choice was tough. Prawns - Nam Jim £12 Chicken- Lemon- Sesame £12 New Potatoes - Garlic Aioli- Lemon £4 Who'd have thought potatoes could be this delicious. Service is chilled but attentive. Aberystwyth is a breezy spot at the best of times, but the glass partitions, brollies, and heaters really keep the wind out.
