Its always so empty in here and its such a shame! The food is brilliant, the waiter that's usually here is friendly, and its reasonably priced. They also do gluten free bits too, like onion rings!! Would recommend asking to check the chips are GF though, as sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't, but they are always happy to have a look for you. Would definitely recommend!

Handy for the Peterborough United stadium (just as well, as I'd left my phone on the table and had to go back for it - thanks for taking care of it). One veggie meal (several choices) and I had the steak pie (a generous and very tasty slice). Drinks reasonable prices for a hotel.

Visited the sweet olives on Friday evening, after a disastrous previous visit when the staff were lethargic and the food dreadful. We have been here on numerous occasions and always found it to be of a high quality but after the last time left us thinking “never again “. We relented and agreed to give it one last time. We weren’t disappointed, the food was superb and the waitress couldn’t have been better. Definitely back on our Friday night dining rota.

Popped in a few years back at the weekend, it's a different kettle of fish at the weekend. I don't want to knock anything too much as there is something I like about this place but cannot ever quite put my finger on it. Working backwards the sticky toffee pudding is spot on, proper portions like my Grannie used to dish me up, so tasty and very good value on comparison to many. As mains we both had burgers and I can say mine was overcooked, ironically the bacon with the burger, which was just thick cut back bacon cooked in the microwave so the fat was all white; and massively undercooked. In my opinion this should have been a well cooked piece of bacon, a thinner type slice at that. The chips were meant to be with their skin, they weren't, to compensate but a modicum the onion rings were good homemade style. My squid starter was also over cooked. Lacked finesse this time round, it was a quite night in the restaurant and a burger is difficult to mess up to be frank. The service was very good and again the setting is pleasent enough for a place that is for us personally, right on our doorstep.

The dining room was clean but lacked character and vibrancy. The menu looked promising with interesting sounding dishes. I ordered the cheese and chive souffle. My heart sank when it arrived. It was a rather sad, rubbery looking, what can only be described as an "omelette " presented on some dry salad leaves. Its saving grace was that it actually tasted good. My husband had the brie and mango filo parcels, again presented on dry salad leaves. Some dressing would've added a bit of sparkle! Ever onward to the mains. My black bean jambalaya on a chimichurri flatbread tasted like a spicy uncle Ben's microwaveable meal. I think I actually heard the ping coming from the kitchen! My husband had the slow roasted lamb shank with mash and a side order of seasonal veg. He said the lamb was tough, a bit overcooked, mash was fine. Desserts, you just cant get that wrong, can you? Mine was the chocolate fondant with custard. It lacked ooze. Really it was just a rather mediocre chocolate sponge. Hubby had the sticky toffee pud and custard which was ok. All in all it was an edible meal but certainly not worth the £41+ on a meerkat 2 for 1 deal! Wish we'd gone into town to a chain at least it would've been a known quantity.

I had a lovely gluten free meal during my visit to Sweet Olives. There was a huge amount of choice on the menu, and I chose the paté and steak in the end, both of which were lovely. I must say that the triple cooked chips were easily the best I've ever had - particularly as chips are usually off the menu for me as a celiac in most restaurants!

I stayed and ate here in November and was very disappointed. Stayed there again last week and the food was excellent. Good quality, good price and the staff are very nice. All freshly prepared and even freshly made bread sticks too. I ate there every night and wasn’t disappointed. Wonderful pizza, steak, venison and will try the rest next week. Well done on listening and making the restaurant well worth a visit.

Visited on meerkat meals deal. To be truthful I would have been annoyed if we had to pay full price. Service was very lacking. Staff definitely haven’t been trained in table service, no knowledge of the menu or customer service. Long wait for food and had to ask for everything. Plates weren’t cleared after eating and no offer of desert menu. Pizza dough was raw in the middle but ate the edges as we waited too long to wait for another one! Really hope they can improve as they have a lot of potential. Won’t be returning unless things change.

Big mistake. First night it was reasonable so I thought I would stay again. It was terrible and i sent it back. Have them The benefit of the doubt and sent my meal back again. First it was a chicken burger that was hard and dry then it was pork belly which was all fat! Seems they have a new chef who needs to learn how to cook. Hotel and staff are excellent but they need to sort out the kitchen

It was average! That’s all I can say really. The anti pasti starter was disappointing, few bits of salami and prosciutto with a load of salad. We had to ask for some bread to accompany it. They gave us walnut bread which was actually quite tasty). The pork belly top was not crispy which disappointed the hubby. Duck pizza was quite dry but a damn good size. On a positive the Pinot was yummy!!

Bus-stops are just a few steps away so you can easily go there by bus as well. Do recommend this place. They have a menu that can change after a period of time so check it before you go if you need to know. They have pasta, pizza and burgers and it's mostly Mediterannean-inspired,

Eating alone on a midweek work trip to Peterborough. the Sweet Olive is located inside the Queensgate Hotel. on my visit in January 2018 I found the staff welcoming and friendly. It wasn't the widest choice on the menu I have ever seen but it did include, seafood, steak, salads and Vegetarian options. I had vegetable soup and steak. The soup was very nice, suited my palette very well. Being totally honest I have had better steaks but this was certainly acceptable perhaps slightly stringy/tough. Overall given its an out of town hotel restaurant the service and quality was fine, I would happily eat here again based on this experience. The only drawback perhaps a include some veggies or side salad with the steak.

Prebooked evening meal in the hotels Sweet Olives Restaurant because according to the hotels website it is "One of the areas finest fresh food restaurants" unfortunately my meal was not cooked and the garlic bread was burnt so was returned uneaten. I have written to the hotel "I ordered the Cannelloni, the pasta was not cooked and the “sauce” was just Tomato Puree which was poured on top the “garlic bread” was burnt – see attached photo. I suggested that with Cannelloni stuffed with feta cheese that a béchamel sauce should have been used rather than Tomato Puree" The managers response was "Being part Italian myself, we never put béchamel sauce on cannelloni, as we try to keep it the authentic Italian way." Unfortunately no comment on Tomato Puree, the burnt garlic bread or the photograph

The menu was interesting and offered a hugh choice. Even the vegetarian in our party could choose from 8 starters and 7 main courses, and that's not including the pizza range, Unheard of in most restaurants. We started with fig and goats cheese filo pastry parcels (very good). Also bread and olives (some of the nicest olives I've ever eaten). Our main courses included sweet potato and spinach curry, tortelli stuffed with wild boar. trio of fish menuiere (sea bass, salmon and monkfish), and caramelised red onion and gruyere tart with goats cheese and olive salad. The food was all lovely. The desert range was also interesting but we just didn't have the room to try it. The service was friendly and efficient, and the chef is obviouls very talented. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant. I know I will be visiting again.

As guests at the Queensgate Hotel it was decided for convenience to use the hotel restaurant, Sweet Olives, it proved to be a good choice. Despite a full a la carte menu, we opted for the set menu that featured a choice of three alternative dishes per course. Priced at a bargain £20 for three courses, this option proved to be both a tasty fulfilling meal. All the food had been carefully and imaginatively prepared and was served by pleasant waiting staff. Despite the lack of possibility that Peterborough will be visited again in the near future, the Sweet Olive restaurant would be my first choice of a venue should I return

The staff were friendly and attentive; the food was good value, we each had a sirloin steak which seemed a bit thicker & larger than most. The food was nicely presented and well cooked. Bread and Olives were served as nibbles until the main dish arrived. The Olives were very good, and the bread excelllent.

Dinner in this restaurant, at the Queensgate Hotel, is a true feast. The menu is kept up-to-date by the resident chef who cooks each dish freshly for you. The food arrives piping hot and the servings are generous, unusual for actually chef-cooked meals. The service is pleasantly informal and quite personal without being intrusive and the prices are reasonable - in fact, good for the amount and the quality of the food served. The wine list is not huge but reasonable. The decor in the dining room is a quite querky but interesting and the tables are of an adequate size and there is no music! Bliss! It's as well to check if thery're going to be busy before you go as they can be sometimes but the weekends tend to be quieter as this is an hotel and has residents mostly during the week. We've been before and I would readily recommend this place again.

Food was very very good and unlike other places helpings were generous, more then adequate and quality was not replaced by quantity. Waiting on staff even had time to enjoy me and my daughter's joke on our hatred of the dreaded Brussell Sprout. We both ate different choices - Hannah scallops with chorizo followed by baked salmon fillet. I had game terrine with a gorgeous plum chutney, followed by rib of beef. We finished off with lemon/lime cheesecake and brandy basket with winter fruits. As I say a delightful meal. We shall return again in the new year.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I, my son and my partner went to the Sweet Olives restaraunt ostensibly to use my Tastecard. On entry the place was deathly silent and we wondered if it was closed. However, through a glass door I saw a solitary staff member. We wandered in past an empty reception, through an empty lobby and into what seemed to be an eating place, where the staff member was. We were alone in the room. The decor was that of an old people's home in need of renovation. The carpets smelt of sweat and left over food and was clearly missing the odour of stale cigarette smoke. We were shown to a table. When I pulled up my chair, my fingers felt something sticky and minty beneath my seat. We really should have left then, but the waitress seemed nice & I was dazzled by the thought of a Tastecard bargain. However, the worst was yet to come. I had a gin and tonic with no ice, as 'the ice machine had broken'. We ordered starters, along with two pizzas and a halloumi kebab. The waitress said something about the stone oven not being lit, so they would take a while. The starters were mediocre, but at least edible. My chorizo salad was OK, but my son's breaded mushrooms were cold and largely unbreaded. The experience did not improve; nobody else arrived when we were there. The lighting created the atmosphere of an airport departure lounge and the ambient jazz dripping from the walls made me long for the heady days of 1980's elevator musak. The only excitement was when another member of staff briefly entered the restaurant to speak with the waitress, followed by the unmistakeable whiff of cannabis. It occurred to me that perhaps in the next room a wild night of drugs and culinary perfection was being enjoyed and we were missing out. Maybe this was not for Tastecard users. Just as I finished my warm gin, the main course arrived. My partner received her grilled halloumi and tomato kebab, garnished with some limp lettuce. The tomato was barely half a tomato and neither it nor the halloumi had been exposed to any heat. The pizzas though were something to behold. The dough was simply raw to the point that it could not support the topping. The topping was not too bad, but the whole thing was cold. I blame the stoned oven. I really should have complained...I should have demanded another meal be made...I should have refused to pay...but I am one of those Brits who does not complain at the time...so I ate what I could. However we declined any sweet or coffees and left without leaving a tip. For me, this was the equivalent of trashing the place and verbally abusing the chef. In order to leave we had to walk back through the brightly lit silence of the lobby and reception area. However, I spotted a door which lead straight to the exit. On asking if we could use that door the pleasant waitress said of course we could. Somewhat relieved that I could salvage a few seconds of my life by leaving this place quicker, I tried to open the door. It was locked. Those seconds were lost after all.

I'm not sure whether it's the hype made within the hotel about the restaurant or not, however I found my dining experience here average compared to my expectations. The food was tasty enough, the portion sizes large and delivered quickly. The factors that let it down for me were, the fact that there were no exciting flavours in the food, the lack of presentation with the food and the fact that the calzone main was hanging clearly over each side of the plate. I would eat here again if I was staying and too tired to go out, however, unfortunately, I don't think I would otherwise.

With my wife being a coeliac it is hard to find places to eat when we are away. We were staying at best western in Peterborough, there restaurant did cater for my wife but it was an extremely posh and expensive place to eat and although we loved the food we decided eating there for a second night was going to be too expensive. I did a google search for gluten free restaurants in Peterborough and Sweet Olives came up and after lookin at there website I booked a table. We were a bit dubious as we approach the restaurant as it was in a hotel but we parked up round the back of the hotel. We were politely welcome and offered a drink whilst we browsed the menu, the waiter was very polite and helpful and had a clear knowledge of a gluten allergy. When our food was ready we were shown to our table and the waiter was very attentive. I didn't expect the food to be amazing as it was very reasonable priced, but I extremely excited when our starters came out, I had the goats cheese and my wife had the king prawns, both of which were very delicious and good quality, my wife had the pan fried chicken for main and I had the battered fish and chips, I was very impressed as the chips were home made big and chunky and fluffy inside and the fish had so much flavour and was free of any grease. I would very much recommend this restaurant Especially if you are a coeliac. If we are ever back in the area we will be having another meal there.
