Sun Fish & Chicken Bar in Argyll & Bute

The people behind the counter couldn't seem less interested in taking your order. I think I had to speak to 3 people, repeating my order to each, until one of them bothered to write it down They charged me full amount, but only gave me 2/3rds of the food (which I discovered when home). Charlatans

Wow! It never ceases to amaze me. I’ve came to this fast food takeaway for over 20 years, no mater what our choices have been the food has been excellent. Good value, its prices are much the same as many other Fish’n chip shops. Usually busy, the foods on menu freshly made, never left being kept warm allowing batters etc to dry up.. We often drive a few minutes away to shore car park and enjoy our dinner/supper with a nice bottle of something.

Can't recommend. Food left an unpleasant after taste. Its not often I go somewhere and can't leave a good review. won't go again

Used to be our regular chippie for a takeaway, food was questionable at times but we often put it down as a one off. After the treatment I have experienced tonight, I will never order from there again. Order arrived incomplete and advised reminding be there in 5 mins. 20 mins later not arrived and remaining food is ruined due to the wait. Phoned the shop to experience diabolical customer service. Questioning why I couldn't eat my meal well half of it was missing! Requested a refund and they advised they would need to collect the food. In the end I just gave up.

Great pizzas but badly let down by the delivery being 40 mins late due to it being 'busy' (after enquiring 20 mins after it's scheduled delivery time). Not good enough especially as ordered over an hour earlier for a specific time so plenty of time to sort logistics. A shame and not worth the £3 delivery fee. Not the delivery driver's fault either who was pleasant and apologetic even though they weren't aware it was late. 2 stars as food was at least hot.

‘Ordered food for delivery and called after over 90 minutes to politely query when order might be expected; the male on the ‘phone was outstandingly rude, interrupting me after a few words, saying something unintelligible, in impatient tones, to which I had no choice but to say “ok”. The order arrived over 40 minutes after that and we gave the driver £2 tip as we thought he’d probably had a taxing night, considering the delay and the rude workmate. The order proved to be incomplete - I rang and, again, politely, tried to open a dialogue with this same delightful, customer-facing individual who answers the ‘phone for this business - after a few sentences back and forth, establishing the situation, the line went silent for a bit, with no warning, and it became obvious that he was ignoring me/holding the ‘phone out in the air and eventually handing to someone else (who was actually very lovely and helpful). This used to be a great local business a few years ago, but I’ll never use it again and I’ll advise everyone I know (quite a lot of people in a small town) never to use it either. I’d rather eat the soil out of my pot plants than ever give them another penny…

I am sure I may have had worse Fish and Chips, but can’t remember it. Chips were undercooked and the batter on the fish?? Was soggy. Avoid at all costs.

Barely cooked and stodgy food, first time for a long time and definitely far from impressed. This used to be an excellent restaurant, but inexperienced staff are bringing it to its knees. Very sad!

Visiting area for a day trip 21st April,, todayWe decided to pop in for a lunch treat.Bought 2 x fish suppers, pizza crunch and a portion of chips.Really was the worst food we have had in that area.Fish was soggy and greasey,no seasoning.altgough we asked for salt and vinegar.Pizza crunch was soggy too.Id strongly advise you to go to the chip shop on the front Street. The gulls were happy with their treat,but you know gulls they eat anything.

The food is good but the only issue i have is the staff use thier hands to move the food around the hot counter then use their hands to put your items on the chips. I witnessed several staff manhandle the food with no utensils or ppe used and with the current situation manhandling food with bare hands is unacceptable.

Ordered at lunchtime. Fish and Chips were freshly made to order. We were told they’d be ready in 10 minutes, we waited in the car, 10 minutes later, food was ready to go. The gentleman serving was incredibly nice. We ate the fish supper overlooking the Loch - the fish was was piping hot, the batter was pretty much perfect - total result. We will return.

Ordered food for delivery and when it hadn’t arrived 40 mins later called to check on the timescale for delivery. We were told it would be with us shortly as they were just waiting for the car. When it hadn’t arrived 20 mins later (we are less than a mile from the shop!) we called to chase up and this time were told there was no record of our order.........so we told them just to cancel the order. Another 20 minutes later there was a knock at the door with the food 🤷‍♀️ Too late, shambolic and never again!

Just had the worst steak pie supper ever - can’t believe they charged for this! Meat dry and tough - they must have known this was not fresh! Expected better from this takeaway to be honest. Also miserable people serving- will not be back!

Takeaway fish and chips are always excellent. Fish supper great value. Highly recommend. Food always hit. Popular takeaway near the centre of Helensburgh.

We arrived in Helensburgh after a long day out and were starving. Owing to covid, the fish and chip shops on the front were closed but we found this one thanks to a Google maps search. Glad we did. Lovely haddock in crispy batter. Plenty of it (without being over the top). We ate on the benches overlooking the Loch. Stunning. Helensburgh is lovely.

This Fish & Chip shop has been superb for as many years as I can remember. I remember stopping there for chips when I was a lot younger and the quality has never changed. Everything is made to order and is guaranteed fresh. We had Fish Suppers today and they were just smashing. I had a job in Helensburgh and right away thought - SUN Chippy for lunch, checked it was still there as I hadn’t been in Helensburgh for a couple of years. They never let you down and honestly you would find it hard to get a better fish supper anywhere else.

Ordered fish supper & we paid full price & the owner denied that we only ordered single fish when we clearly ordered fish supper with chips & the Owner is RUDE.... don’t buy from this shop 😡😡😡😡😡👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 Bad customer service!

Don't listen to anything anyone else says about this chip shop. The food is always fresh, hot and of good quality. The staff are also pleasant and quiet. When you order over the phone, they are always very pleasant too. It's the best chippy in town! Anyone else who says otherwise is talking nonsense. I've never had a bad meal from there and that's the truth!

Well worth a visit if you are in the area, friendly staff, good service and a good choice of suppers and Pizzas

We love the Sun's pizzas especially the farmhouse, so tasty and by far the best pizzas in the town, the base/crust is so good.

Very good food at a reasonable price, friendly prompt service with a good selection of both suppers and Pizzas

Thought we would just grab a bag of chips and go. While the queue was fairly short we waited until 14 mins or more passed and the chips were just average. Not really tasting of a thing other than grease and salt. I will not be back again although used to frequent this chippy before about once a month.

Visited Sun Fish & Chicken Bar at the weekend and wasn't that impressed, chips were cold but hard and the haggis was pretty rubbery, plenty of better options down at the front of the town.

Most fish and chip shops in Helensburgh are usually busy of an evening, so we should have wondered why, when we emerged from the cinema across the road from Sun Fish and Chicken Bar, there were no customers. A member of the staff (the proprietor, I believe) was counting money in the till and so was too busy to look up and greet us.A younger employee was summonsed to cook our order of two fish suppers. We were happy to wait while it was freshly cooked for us and as we did so another couple came in and ordered food that was already cooked and on display in the glass-fronted hot cabinet. By now the older man had finished counting piles of coins and all the notes in the till, so he served the customers.I was disgusted to note that the man failed to wash his hands after handling money, which is a filthy commodity touched by who knows who have done who knows what before handling it. He then took two portions of food with his bare hands, put them in a bag and served the other customers. YUCK!I watched carefully as my chips were placed in a box and then, as expected, the man took two pieces of fish with his dirty, unwashed hands and placed them on top of the chips. At this juncture I protested and was told by the man, "I am a chef...." I am not sure how that qualifies touching ready-to-eat food with his bare, dirty hands and so I asked for my money back. I was refunded and we left.I noted too that what would ordinarily qualify as one portion of chips in another fish shop was served to us in one box to share and there was one decent sized haddock fillet and a much smaller one placed on top of it in the same box. Is this what they call portion control at Sun Fish and Chicken Bar? Who was to have the larger fish fillet; me or my wife? Or perhaps the expectation was for us to pull it apart with our (unwashed, maybe?) hands to enable us to share the mismatched fillets equally?This was not a pleasant experience and I would actively discourage anyone from buying food from this establishment with its sub-standard food safety practices. I think most Helensburgh residents realise already that Sun Fish and Chicken Bar is dodgy because we passed the Palace and Wee Kelpie fish shops on our way home and both were busy.

Always go here when in Helensburgh staff great and food always lovely.Cannot fault the cleanliness and would definitely recommend

Amazing pizza lovely fresh chips, great value for money, lots of choice, fish & chips. Friendly staff, home delivery service available.

Spotless chippy, excellent chips and chicken breast was delicious, fish was delicious, says my hubby. Would definitely recommend this chippy and will visit next time in Helensburgh. Far superior to the Wee Kelpie that’s situated on the front.

Chips are terrible and most things are floating in oil, we wont be buying from this place again. The service is slow but I will admit that the customer area of the shop is Immaculate.

Spotless shop in and out, efficient staff and most dishes cooked to order Fish is fresh, the chips well cooked and the batter light and tasty I can recommend The Sun

We have being coming to this place for as long as we can remember, but sadly in recent times it has fallen short of the excellent food and service it gave. We are in weekly.

When on holiday we ordered by phone after a day out , when we picked up our order staff were friendly and order was ready. The pizzas were delicious and the chips lovely and fresh we enjoyed them so much we ordered again during our second week in Helensburgh.

This is a take-away just up the hill from Helensburgh Central railway station. It gets some criticism but I've always found it to be very good, especially the pizzas. Home delivery available and reliable. One star knocked off for not accepting debit or credit cards.

Coming back from a Day out we required something quick, as we were passing the SUN Fish & chip shop we stopped. Adults had Fish Suppers and Kids had Pizzas, yes in the same shop from a separate area. We had No complaints, Fish Suppers were lovely and there was nothing left of the Pizzas, speaks for itself. Will use again.

Visited 14 May 17 with my kids and politely asked if they sold Kabab meat? Very abruptly informed "this is a fish and chip shop not a Kabab shop ok" well industrial size oven for pizza tells me they don't just sell fish. Bloke is 100% pure ignorant and we won't be back to this average chippy.

Very traditional. Great food. Staff are lovely and all food is cooked to order so hot and fresh. Very clean place and have a good food selection

DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PLACE! It tries to pass itself off as an Italian run fish and chip shop IT IS NOT! The Turkish staff are rude, they talk amongst themselves in front of you while serving, the food is ALL over priced and the fish supper I bought was completely inedible. I have no idea what they cook the food in but it is quite honestly the worst fish supper I have ever had in Scotland....even the seagulls wouldn't touch it!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY and try find somewhere else...anywhere else has got to be better than this!
