Stables Groomsport in North Down

Last night there was a major power cut in Bangor, down the road from Groomsport, and my brothers and I couldn't dine at the restaurant we had booked. There were a couple of places outside the shut-down area but it was a Friday night and they couldn't fit us in. The Stables, being a high-class establishment was also full up but, unlike the other restaurants, they didn't turn us away. In fact, the chap on the desk was incredibly helpful, saying he would find a place for us and then, five minutes later, he found us an even better table with a view of the sea. We were very impressed with his professionalism and positive attitude. The waiters were also very friendly and helpful and arrived at our table very quickly to get our drinks order. The food was delicious and one of our waitresses went out of her way to find an alcoholic beverage that not everybody is familiar with. After the frustration of trying to find a restaurant where we could celebrate my birthday earlier in the week we hit the jackpot with The Stables. I had eaten there a couple of years ago with a friend from London and liked it but it has improved immensely since that visit. I can't praise the restaurant enough for their friendliness, professionalism and willingness to go that extra mile to make sure we had a good time. And the food, as I said earlier, was top quality. I will definitely go there again and not just for a special occasion. The restaurant totally deserves the five stars I have given it.

Food was lovely, great value. Staff were very attentive from arrival, throughout. Cocktail was excellent. Very fresh/modern decor & great atmosphere for Sunday evening.

Just had a surprise birthday dinner at The Stables, can't praise them enough, food excellent staff and service excellent. I know catering for a big group of people makes it very busy for chef and kitchen staff too, all meals very tasty everyone enjoyed themselves for the food and atmosphere provided. We went to tbe Stables for dinner as part of our 50th anniversary celebration. The food was excellent, portions were more than generous. The staff and the service were outstanding. We went back a few days later for lunch and our experience was equally good. Good atmosphere, lovely location, super.

Heard good things about this place went for Sunday lunch nice place service was all Young seemed like they we not long started food came one meal ended up on the floor the roast beef was not very warm and very fatty and one of the meals had plastic in the vegetables. The guy was nice enough about it but the Scampi that ended up on the floor took a while to come but by that time the chips were cold the meal with the plastic was replaced by that time two of us were finished.As I said nice enough but we were ther 1 hour 30 minutes charged full price. Maybe caught them on a bad day.

First meal was dropped by waitress they served side by the time the replacement meal came the side was cold, one roast dinner was cold and beef was tough and mostly fat, i told them it was cold they didnt comment, another Roast dinner has large piece of plastic in, we offered another meal which came after the rest of group had finished, they apologised but charged full price, this is very poor considering all the issues.

Food was lovely as was as was the cocktails. Atmosphere along the window dinning area was so nice. Greeting staff were so jolly and friendly. While eating there was always attentive staff on the floor to cater to the table. Thought some of the meals were a little pricey but we enjoyed what we had. We Will be back!

Great atmosphere & location lots of parking so just relax and enjoy your experience.

Booked here for my mum's birthday in August. This is my first time back since it's revamp. Definitely not disappointed, food was lovely and tasty, staff were very attentive and friendly and the decor was stunning. Definitely worth a visit if your looking a decent feed

Our daughter booked dinner for our anniversary. Was our first time in since was taken over by Carmichaels. First impression was lovely restaurant. Really liked the decor. Service from Helena I think was excellent and other staff who looked after us. Food was really good and served on hot plates which his big pet hate for me if plates are not hot. Wld definitely recommend and we will be returning soon.

What is immediately clear though, is that it is a well oiled machine! There are lots of waiting staff (all very young, but providing levels of service decades beyond their years) immaculately dressed and with eyes constantly around the room. They were world class. A credit to the management. There’s also clearly a manager on the floor at all times. I love to see this. He ran operations, and it showed. The menu is large, and extremely varied. I could have ordered 10+ items- such choice. The quality of the food and portion size were spot on too. I couldn’t rate this place more highly,

Lovely anniversary meal at the Stables this evening. Food was great but what made it special was the service. The staff are friendly, professional and nothing is too much trouble. Will definitely be back!

Another wonderful lunch 😄. Today we started with home made minestrone soup, fabulous 😍. Followed by steak and mushroom pie, fresh veggies and creamed potatoes. Top marks 😁

This has become our ' go to restaurant' when we have friends over or we need a 'treat'. Great food and lovely setting for a meal

Ordered Eggs Benedict- tastiest thing on the plate was the parsley garnish. The maple pancakes were just ok. Really disappointed. Our coffee was awful - we overheard the waitress tell another couple (that came in after us that the machine had just broken). The young waitress was very polite.

Terrible management we booked the stables for after my grandmothers funeral and had asked prior to booking when we had to pay we were told we come down the next day and pay. When we left to go home we got a call from relatives saying we needed to come back and pay becsuse the manager said we had to and cant pay tomorrow !! We explained that prior to booking we were told we could pay next day but this manager said that was not correct and it needed to be paid now.This resulted in the family member having to pay and us having to pay them back in the middle of our grief after the funeral.This should have been handled with sensitivity and very poor considering we had just buried or granny and by demanding payment right on the spot especially since we were told we could pay the next day we now wish we went elsewhere.

We had a great time this evening with dinner for 4 - 2 adults, a 16 year old and a 6 year old. It was great to get a friendly welcome from the staff and the good atmosphere continues into the restaurant. Food was top class and good value. Great to be back in this classic North Down spot, and the recent makeover has really done the trick. We will be back

It’s been ages since we visited this once excellent restaurant and I’m pleased to say that it’s back to its former self. Excellent choice of dishes, much better than most other local eateries, and served promptly by charming staff. We were really pleased with our lunch.

Nice menu good selection of specials we sat out in conservatory view of sea . Had a roast turkey dinner and passionfruit Cheesecake all really good staff were attentive and helpful will definitely be back. Made it back for dinner for starter salt and chilli squid such a simple dish when done right this was definitely done right , for main went with one of the specials morrocan curry with cod fillet and basmatti rice the rice was aromatic and fluffy fish was perfectly seasoned for my taste requiring no additional seasoning at the table curry full of flavour with just enough kick you don't forget . Overall well pleased this could become a regular haunt

Went on Saturday for an early dinner. Main course took half an hour and the "pre-dinner" olives arrived with the main course

Sunday roast was average and we ordered extra roast potatoes which were rock hard. Beef was very good however but wasn't cheap. £85 foe 3 of us to have 2 courses. Venue still lacks a bit of atmosphere despite recent changes. Returned today to try out the Stables again under the new ownership. Late lunch/early dinner with my wife and son. Amazing choice on the menu and lots of specials too. Definitely something for everyone. Had to go for the roast beef again to see what was different. The beef was amazing, cooked to perfection. Veg, mash and crazy also outstanding. Roast potatoes still need work though. Chocolate pudding for afters was immense too. Linzi has lasagne which was very good too. Will loved his fish and chips which was a huge portion for a child's meal. Pity about the small plate though as his chips fell off all the place. Similar prices as before and that was over a year ago so great value in my opinion. Service was very good and apart from having to ask for the bill twice, couldn't be faulted. So many other dishes to try on that new menu so we will be back again soon!

Plan was to cook tonight but as both myself and the wife were running late wifey decided let's go out for dinner (it my birthday). Phoned, booked a table for 7, after hearing such great reviews of the place. Recently taken over 5 months ago, freshened up compared to the last time we were there. From we walked in the door to we left we were treated like regulars. Nothing seems like to much trouble. The starters and mains were 1st class. I'll definitely tell everyone that will listen how good it was. The desserts were also 1st class. WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK. Thank you for a meal to remember. On the way home The wife was even talking about the choux bun she's gonna have next time.

We decided to visit The Stables tonight after not having been in quite a few years. Really disappointing meal to say the least. We ordered the chicken stack and the seafood linguini. To put it simply, the chicken stack shouldn't have left the kitchen, the whole thing was burnt. Honestly wouldnt have minded waiting longer for one that was cooked right. I don't like complaining or sending food back so I decided to eat it anyway and purposely left a good bit to show the state it was served. When the waiter came round to clear the plates, I expected to be asked if everything was OK with the meal, but no, plates were cleared without a word and not even asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu or the bill. We sat for about 5mins then the dessert menu was put in front of us, again without a word spoken. We went up to pay and mentioned the state our meal was served in and no surprise, there wasn't much said about it or much of an apology. Safe to say we won't be back, certainly not for a very long time and won't be recommending, especially paying £40 for 2 main courses (one of which was barely edible) and a jug of water. Not worth it!!

Lovely place to eat ! Today was our 2nd visit. A few week ago we’d a lovely evening out with friends. Today we brought 22 people including kid's to eat. Food is amazing. Service is 10 out of 10. Contact with myself and the Stable with a large booking was easy. Menu was great. We will definitely be back! X

We were looking forward to revisiting after the recent absence & refurbishment but unfortunately things did not live up to expectations. Plenty of staff however all appeared non engaging. Ordered G&T before food ordered, no-one asked for further drinks order, so we asked for a wine list. Half an hour later still no-one to take our wine order so I had to gulder for a waitress. Red instead of white wine arrived after our meal so was sent back. Food was good enough but did not make up for the service. I really had hoped this would be a pleasant alternative venue to Donaghadee but we're going to give it a miss.

As a solo diner having had a stressful day I was welcomed by the owner who was the perfect host. I was given a window seat and felt like their most important patron. The vegetarian options were varied and, having chosen the Chestnut Roast, I was presented with a piping hot delicious meal. I will return with my family as I would like to support this restaurant. I cannot thank the owner enough for his welcome which although low-key, felt very genuine. I have no hesitation in awarding five stars in every category.

My wife and myself visited today having returned after the previous owner's not too good ability. Our visit today disappointed me being coeliac as I couldn't have the soup, and do enjoy a good soup but today's soup contained barley. I did ask if the chef could maybe make me say a mushroom soup instead but found that to impossible. The rest of the meal was perfect but still missed a bowl of soup. When i went home I did manage to make a nice bowl of cream of mushroom soup, made in about 15 minutes And I ain't a chef, very easy.

As a solo diner looking fir for some respite,after a,treasure day

Made a reservation and headed off for dinner. Carmichaels has always had a great reputation and we were hoping that this visit would confirm that they hadn’t lost their touch. We were greeted and made welcome seated and left to peruse the menu with some iced water in a carafe and pretty glasses. Our drinks order arrived promptly, a Diet Coke and a small Sauvignon blanc and our orders placed. The food came in reasonable time which allowed us to check out the refurbishment. It’s a subtle change and update to the decor and in keeping with today’s grey neutral palette, tasteful and easy on the eye. Food was tasty, well presented and lots of it. My OH raved of his slow cooked pork belly with a cabbage side and my Caesar salad was excellent. Chips were hot, dry and delicious. I declined desert while my husband had a beautiful cheesecake ensemble. Coffee finished our meal and the shortbread was a nice touch. It’s wonderful to see the Stables back open and being run in the friendly welcoming way that the Carmichaels do so well. I’d recommend a visit without hesitation other than to say it’s not necessarily a cheap meal out, there are less expensive options on the menu but you get what you pay for and that’s not a fault. Two well fed happy customers left and spread the news that The Stables are back and worth a visit

Ordered 2 fillet steaks & 1 rump steak. All medium cooked. Fillets were not tender and needed effort to cut with steak knife. Instead of rump steak got a sirloin steak... because of the need for time to cook another steak my guest reluctantly accepted the sirloin steak. Waiter stated that it would take 20 minutes to cook a rump steak??? Utter rubbish... didn't even reduce price of sirloin... wouldnt recommend venue...

We heard that the Stables is under new management since we were there a year ago, so we went to try it out. We will definitely be back - the service and food were outstanding. The main course menu was really varied, and GF options were available. I had a very tasty chestnut roast with buttered vegetables, and I was able to have skinny chips instead of the roast and mashed potatoes on the menu (it was fairly early on a Monday night and they weren't too busy, so this flexibility may have been exceptional). Hubby had one of the day's specials, a full traditional turkey and ham roast, and declared it very good. The desserts were quite pricy but very good, though here it was disappointing that the only GF options were the usual old faithfuls, pavlova and ice cream sundaes - I hope the menu will show more imagination in the future, as there are many of us who, while not coeliac, find our health is better if we omit gluten. Our cappuccinos were good, and came with melt-in-the-mouth little shortbread biscuits.

We booked a table for 5 people, 6pm on Sat night for my dad's 84th birthday. From arriving to leaving, the staff could not have been more attentive, regardless of the fact the restaurant was very busy. Their happy, helpful and cheerful approach was just wonderful. The food was superb, and we couldn't have asked for better. My dad was delighted, and all agreed, The Stables is very definitely our new No 1. Thank you to all the staff who made our night so enjoyable.

I felt it necessary to respond to the review by William P....I have been to The Stables on a number of occasions and this time I was not the booker; a friend booked on my behalf as a treat. The quality of food, ambience and service is always first class. I have had numerous interactions with a lady with a mid length blonde bob hairstyle and know that she has extensive customer service experience in the hospitality and travel industry (globally). She has also been super attentive and responsive to any issues raised while we were there (granted there have not been any to date!)

This morning we unfortunately witnessed the worst customer service i and our friends have EVER seen. We went in for breakfast and was served by a lady with a blonde bob style hair cut. We ordered our food and when it arrived one of our friends pulled out a bleached blonde long hair (no one at our table has remotely blonde hair). We mentioned to the lady waitress and i use the word waitress loosely as she quite clearly needs re trained in customer service. The lady then said she didnt know how the hair got there as the chefs are bald as if to say its one of us. When clearly it was one of her hairs. When clearing the plates she then asked one of our party members and i quote " do you have a problem" we have never ever seen such bad manners from such a vile human being. We then mentioned to the manager who then said " well i wasnt there" as if to say im not getting involved. Have to say folks for being taken over by new owners and trying to build up a good reputation i think you need to look long and hard at the staff. This ladys customer service is so so so poor and rude and being in customer service role myself even a manager to say well i wasnt there instead of taking control of the situation is also poor. For anyone thinking of going to this place i recommend spending your money else where. If being served by a vile human being with bad waitress manners is your thing then here is certainly the place to eat. AVOID AVOID AVOID ☆ update since they have replied ☆ Rather or not it sits well with you what is said above is very true. You will lose alot of business with this lady front of house. Personally speaking if her table service manners are to go by and i was the owner id have her back of house as far back as possible. Cant wait to see how long your business lasts with comments and replies like you have put. Because i will be spreading this experience as much as possible.

Had a good father's day meal here group of 6 . I would have given four stars but one of the meals battered haddock was way overcooked so much it was brittle with the haddock so shrunken to be invisible. However it was guickly replaced and I was told it was excellent. Plenty of apologise s were given but it should not have been served

My son and I went for lunch on Sunday 9th June. Everything was just perfect, Lovely lunch and great service. The staff could not have done enough for you. They did go beyond their duty. New decoration really beautiful. We will return. Many thanks to all.

First visit in many years and was well worth it. The food was excellent and the service was exceptional, we could not be made to feel more welcome. We were a party with two young children and the staff were so helpful and split their mains and desserts. Thank you for making our family occasion both special and delicious. We will be back soon. Please take advantage of this great venue and keep it going for many years, they deserve it.

Visited here a few times since it’s been refurbished. Generally the food is very good, as is the service and the atmosphere. They have obviously spent a lot of money on the refurb and it’s a comfortable place to be. The menu is extensive, but does seem to vary in price for some items, some seem very good value and other things seem quite expensive. This said, the quality of the food is very good. My father and I shared the Breaded Brie, and must say it was excellent - and I might be the only person saying this, but personally there’s too much of it. If I’d had it as a starter on my own, I would have never have eaten my main course. There were 3 large bits of Breaded Brie, a side salad and the red onion marmalade all for £8.95, excellent value and great quality and size (if you’re hungry!). I had the Portavogie Scampi and my father had a starter portion of Chicken Wings as a main (again, great size portion). Both of these dishes were good. If I am being really critical, I would prefer the scampi not to be in a bowl, as the heat causes it to moisten the batter - first world problems I know! I couldn’t finish mine, so the waitress kindly packaged it up for me to take home. Overall I’d highly recommend The Stables, and look forward to coming back soon, especially when I have room for the Banoffee Pie!

Went for breakfast on sat the 11th and service was shocking, waited 30 minutes for breakfast with no apology, couldn’t get the waiter’s attention. Mentioned this when getting the bill and the girl stood typing the amount into the card machine and went all I can say is sorry and laughed and just to top it off the breakfast supervisor stood beside us pretending she couldn’t hear it or offering a solution. Terrible terrible service and will not be back

We have been dining at the Stables for many years on our visits to Bangor. We stopped going when it was under different management as standards had nosedived. Went there again on Sunday evening and what sheer delight to see it back at its previously high standard. Great food , very friendly helpful staff and brilliant ambience. Great experience at The Stables on a busy Saturday night. The refurb is fresh and modern, the staff were very attentive and knowledgeable (what else would you expect from the Carmichael’s) and the food was excellent. Great choices and good value for money. We will be back .

Excellent food & service, only downside is the price of the wine...The Crossings is available anywhere for £11 including VAT, so IMO £28 is pushing it...

Took the wife out for dinner did not book and was meet by a friendly welcome the food is now number 1 on my place to have something to eat thank you again 😋

We celebrated my Father in Laws 80th birthday today. The staff went above and beyond to make this a memorable time for the whole family especially my FIL. The food was exceptional, I cannot recommend the Stables enough. Thank you to all the staff.

Had heard great things about this place on social media, so had to give it a try on St Patrick’s night before heading into Bangor. The staff were great. Friendly, attentive and accommodating. The decor was impressive and the ambience spot-on for a casual/family dining experience. The food was excellent and really good value for money, which is a rare combination these days, but a couple of dishes deserve special mention. The honey chilli chicken and roasted pork belly is the best we have ever tasted. Great portion, prepared beautifully and absolutely full of flavour. The triple cooked chips were great too. The apple and rhubarb crumble with custard on the specials menu was indescribably good also. It was going down a storm with the other diners, so much so I just managed to get the last portion. Looking forward to returning very soon to sample some of the other dishes. I can highly recommend The Stables in Groomsport.

First time in NI for my 94 year old dad tonight , and we had the most fantastic meal here. The service was impeccable , right from the day we booked our table , and chose it because of his hearing , to the stunning food we all enjoyed . Everyone loved the setting , and the layout, and you couldn't have given him a better start to his trip . We , as a family , thank you .

Haven't been for ages but so glad I went there for lunch. Food was delicious, service so good. The waitress was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was calm and friendly. Would highly recommend the Stables and will definitely be back sometime soon.

Would highly recommend everyone to try the Stables in Groomsport. We went for lunch last Tuesday to celebrate my Dad's big birthday! Lunch was fantastic and all the staff (especially Angie) looked after us really well and nothing was too much trouble. Beautiful refurbishment. We are here at around 7 and it was packed. Lovely to see such a lively venue. We ordered off the specials menu and it was a delight. The starters (crispy duck salad and arancini) were also delicious The views were great and we would happily come back for lunch

Just back from our third meal here in five weeks. I think that says it all!! The first two were with friends and this evening with family. Indeed from the moment we arrive it actually feels like we are family to this wonderful establishment. A genuinely warm greeting on arrival which makes us feel valued and relaxed. Honestly you would be hard pressed to get any friendlier staff than here. Just lovely people. The food is outstanding and close to perfection. Since the Carmichaels took over again in January The Stables has just gone up market in every way but at affordable prices. It is hard to choose any other place to go because of the value they put on the customer here and the quality of the food. There are a lot of young staff just being trained and they also were so sweet. The Carmichaels have chosen their staff with care. We love the way the more experienced staff members gently and respectively guide the new young staff members along. So in summation. Wonderful restaurant. Super friendly staff. Top quality food at great prices. If you want fantastic food and want to feel that you matter then this is the place for you. Our number one go to restaurant. What a beautiful place and what a beautiful view too! I could have stayed all day! Service was amazing, food was delicious and plentiful, staff were so attentive and friendly. I honestly can't wait to come back. The 2 hour drive there was worth it! Highly recommend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

And it's just as well I didn't stick to that thought! For context, my fiancée and I last tried The Stables under the previous ownership and heartily declared that we wouldn't be back after a diabolical meal. Fast forward and The Stables has been transformed under the stewardship of The Carmichael's who have been providing quality dining across various locations for decades. So when my parents brought us last night I went with some trepidation and some excitement. I needn't have been worried. The refit has been well thought out and the place looks fantastic. But it's all about the food isn't it? Again fantastic. Between us we had steak sandwiches, duck, and nutty chicken. Nobody was disappointed and plates were cleared. And then came the choux bun with ice cream and butterscotch sauce.....oh my word! I'll be thinking of that dessert for a good while! And finally you can add into the mix the level of service not often seen at this tier of the sector, friendly, attentive, but not overbearing. To the owners and management (and indeed all the staff).....you have taken a place that many thought would see it's doors closed for good after so many years, and you have given it an entirely new lease of life. Well done to all...we are already plotting our return!

We were excited to hear that the restaurant had been re-opened and couldn’t wait to visit. We had a lovely table near the window in the conservatory section of the restaurant. Although the restaurant was extremely busy, staff were very friendly and attentive. I had the Brie wedges to start which were delicious followed by the chicken stack with mash. My husband had the salt and chilli squid and the steak sandwich. It was empty plates all around! It’s hard to believe that we had our wedding reception in the private room at the Stables 23 years ago. We can’t wait to return again.

Had a delightful family meal here. Service was so friendly, helpful and attentive. Excellent children’s menu and the main menu had such a great range. Catered really well for coeliacs and cannot wait for our next visit!

Our first visit to the Stables under the new management. It has been totally refurbished and is now beautifully decorated with stunning colours and materials. The staff were friendly and professional and the service was outstanding. The menu was varied with a good selection to choose from and cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was great and it was good to see it so busy, we will definitely be returning.

Recently refurbished restaurant to a high standard wouldn’t expect anything less from legends in the Hospitality industry, Ian and Keith Carmichael were both in attendance, as owners who always have their establishments well staffed with good management this was definitely evident , my wife and I enjoyed a really good Sunday lunch to begin we had a warm Duck salad and deep fried Brie both good portions, for main course I opted for the Turbot with fennel croquettes, parisienne of carrots with an exceptional fish bone butter sauce , my wife also had the Duck salad as her main course , we also had a bottle of Sauvignon blanc £22, starters were priced £8.95 while my Turbot was a good value £21 , I would definitely recommend a visit to the Stables , I would advise booking in advance it’s unsurprisingly busy 👍👨🏻‍🍳

Chicken Liver Parfait & Salt n Chilli squid for starters were just fantastic, followed by the lovely scampi & quite simply the best steak sandwich I’ve ever had, the smell of the chargrilled steak before taking the first bite was just fantastic! Service was 1st class from all members of staff who couldn’t have done more for us they are a credit to the business. Have already booked Sunday lunch so the rest of the family can enjoy. Highly recommend a visit as you will not be disappointed. 5x⭐️👏🥩🍷

Our family was staying in Groomsport across the road from Stables while on vacation from Canada. My wife popped over to make reservations not knowing it was Mother's Day in Northern Ireland. They were booked solid but kindly told us they could get us in as we were visiting. It was one of the nicest evenings we had on our vacation. Service was A+++. Food was absolutely fantastic. We were tended to by many servers who were all great. I really cannot say enough about this place! Keep up the good work and we definitely will visit again when we come back.

Called in today about 12 on the off chance they could squeeze us in as the car park has been packed every time we drive past, luckily Ian sorted us out with a great table by the window. We only wanted a light snack and decided to share the wraps Duck and the Advacodo/ Halloumi wow so 😋 tasty. Presentation was amazing and a marked improvement on one previously served on day 2 but everyday is a school day and I can see a vast improvement. Attentive service as ever and staff very friendly. Keep up the amazing service, looking forward to our next wee impromptu brunch ...cheers
