I've stopped here for coffee or tea in the past and have been impressed by the location. St Peter's Hall dates from around 1280 and is a short 10 minute drive from Bungay. It is located in a rural location surrounded by green fields and has its own moat. Its decor is genuine and contains many original period pieces. We booked the hall for a private family celebration and were not disapointed. The restaurant normally closes from January through to early March but opens for private functions and this is one of its strengths. It's ideally suited for such occasions. The food was exceptionally good as was the service. We were made to feel at home and welcome from start to finish. A variety of tastes and diets was catered for. Although we couldn't take advantage of the grounds this is something to savour during the summer months.

Visited the brewery firstly for the tour, the gentlemen enjoyed the tour very much, very much fun, very tasty the taster drinks, and the guy who did the tour very informative interesting and clearly loves his job, followed up with dinner in the restaurant which was fabulous roast chicken and all the trimmings and one chicken and mushroom pie which was enjoyed very much - thank you for the young lads for their hospitality albeit it a very cold wet day to visit with flooding roads but what a Lovely setting to spend such a day - thank you Jill Hall and your team at the restaurant and the brewery staff for the brewery tour. Will definitely return and recommend highly

Lady at the venue was very helpful when I rang a couple of days in advance to check if we were ok to leave our car in the car park whilst we did a 10 mile walk from St Peters. We sadly mistimed our arrival back as the shop had just shut at 4pm, however the bar in St Peter's Hall was open and we were able to have a drink and an excellent cheese scone with salad and homemade onion chutney. My husband was also able to buy some bottles of beer from the bar to take away. Beautiful old hall and lovely setting sat outside by the river. A wonderful location.

Fantastic start to the day, we had some friends visit & decided to take them to St Peters Hall for a completely different experience & they were not disappointed. They very kindly opened up for us as the are usually closed on a Monday ( what service ) . We had 4 Full English, one of which was vegetarian so comprised of fried Halloumi and Vegetarian sausages . Absolutely fantastic couldn’t recommend it enough. Beautiful surroundings, and a magnificent building. ENJOY .

Party of 4 looking forward to having Friday lunch to celebrate a birthday. How anybody could make such a mess of running a catering business which had so much going for it was beyond us. The setting is first class and quality of food very good - with exception of the soup which was lukewarm. The room was cold despite having a wood burner going. The only other table of people were wearing their coats. We saw another heater but it was not being used despite it being obvious that people were feeling the cold. When we asked to see a wine list we were told there was a choice of two. One white and one red. We chose red and when the bottle was put on table the screw top had not been opened plus the retail price of £5.50 was left on the bottle. When I asked if this was their price the young guy said no and we were billed and paid £16.50. We were never asked if we wanted a desert. It would not take much to improve the business to a good standard which it needs to be to get repeat customer and better reviews than unfortunately this one.

Lucky to get ONE star. What a huge disappointment to arrive here and find no real ale available? wtf. There’s a brewery 20 yards away despite the franchise/coexist! USE IT. Go on. Risk it. Buy a barrel.I can buy bottles of St Peters in Morrisons. And I DO NOT come here for scones and cream? Really? So sad that such a lovely venue and well known brand, is LET DOWN by the basic reason for visiting. Beer.Hey!!! There’s a clue in my photo!

Staying in the area on holiday, we drove over half an hour to get to St Peters Hall, after seeing it's website. It's quite a remote location but the building looked beautiful and the setting is very pretty. However, when we asked if we could have breakfast we were told it had to be pre-booked. There were about 15 Jaguar cars outside but the owners were all outside having what looked like a guided tour. We were told we could have a cup of tea and a scone outside but they couldn't accommodate us inside anywhere, despite nobody being inside. It was too chilly to sit outside as per her suggestion and a scone at 11am wasn't really what we had in mind. Please update your website to state that you have to book - there is nothing to say that this is required. We were extremely disappointed.

I am very keen to post a review, partly to reflect the excellent service and food my brother and I received on our recent "pie and pint" brewery tour (yesterday) and to address some of the past negative criticism which I feel has been unfair and inaccurate (I am not a friend or relative of the owner Jill and this is a genuine review)! Firstly there have been some complaints that St Peter's Hall no longer offers a "fine dining" experience or evening opening. Maybe not, but what it does offer is an excellent cafe with very tasty food and top notch service. I had the chicken and mushroom "pie of the day" which was delicious. The filling was flavoursome with light, delicious, pastry. My pie came with new potatoes and a medley of vegetables including thinly sliced runner beans and brocoli florets, all tasty and cooked to perfection. My brother does not like mushrooms, so he was offered anything else on the menu, for the same price, and opted for a delicious cheese and ham ploughman's lunch with a lovely hand carved ham (no supermarket, pre-cut muck) and all the usual trimmings, beautifully presented. We also had bakewell tart for afters and that was delicious too. Portions were generous, so the food is both good and plentiful.

Sadly this venue lacks any personality. The building is of sheer magnificence, utterly grand, a great asset to the local environment, and community. Unfortunately, it has been badly let down. There are consistently bad stories, reviews, disappointment! We need St. Peter’s restaurant to live up to the sensitive , lively, warm and receptive venue that it used to be. It appears sad, down at heal, rather lost,,in what should be a wonderful destination, offering the best possible food and beer......it so deserves it, and so do the locals, and the local tourist industry!

The hall was freezing cold, there was a log fire which could not heat the room unless lit the day before and kept in overnight, we kept our coats on, no secondary heating at all. Food was chaotically served, the fish main course were served and had finished before the turkey main courses were all served. My husband had 1 miserly slice of turkey, veg were pretty grim. Took ages to be served a glass of wine. We have eaten there a few times for lunch but the last twice we have been not very good and this last visit is our last until the management changes.

Just back from our first (and last) visit to St. Peter's Hall. When we arrived our party of four was shown to an upstairs dinning area, with four empty tables, three of which were reserved. The room has a large wood burning fire, which had been on, but was now out and the room was cold. The first attempt by the staff to relight the fire was to throw a bucket of coal onto the embers. The second and final attempt was to set light to a couple of pieces of cardboard on top of the coal. So, the now 11 diners all wore their coats throughout their meals. The waitress said that they had no kindling or dry wood for the fire, but would turn the radiators up. An electric fire was then brought in to help. The food, when it arrived was "nice" although disjointed and not over warm. We asked to see the owner Jill, and was told that she would be informed. When we went to pay, we asked again to speak to the owner, we were told that she was busy cooking in the kitchens, and would give us a phone call. We said that we would pay the bill only after we had spoken to the owner (bit of eye rolling from the waitress). To their credit they said she would Phone ASAP and to pay over the phone. We eventually got a call back about 2 hours later and Jill agreed with our comments, also said that the bill was not payable. Although the food was ok, the experience was very poor, which is a shame as it is a beautiful building. It's just that the staff need a bit of backup.

Having drunk St. Peters beers for over 15 years now it has always been an ambition to visit the brewery. A good friend visited last year and ate in the restaurant, he strongly recommended us to eat but book for the Sunday lunch. In the area for a break we invited an old fried to join us and I was really excited about our visit. Arrived for our 3pm lunch at the wonderful hall and was greeted nicely at the bar to be informed we would eat upstairs. I noticed 2 barrels on the bar and looked forward to drinking the beers from the barrel at the brewery itself. Shown to our table upstairs where 2 other tables were dining. Ordered beers from the cask, 2 Ruby Reds and a half of the fruit beer knowing it was not draft, with an emphasis that our guest only wanted a half, no problems. Waited a while, and had to ask for our order to be taken, and reminded them about our drinks. After another while the drinks eventually arrived, 2 pints of Ruby, one flat and one frothy, and a pint of the fruit beer! Called the waitress back after tasting my flat looking beer, it was the dregs of the barrel, my wife's pint of Ruby was great. The waitress offered no apology and I had to tell her to change it, she then told me my pint was the last in the cask, knew that, but nothing else, so the second pint was from a bottle then! Questioned her about our guest's pint to be told the bottles come in pints, knew that as well but no explanation why a pint was served. This is the home brewery where the beer is made and served on tap, what more can one say! Onto the meal itself and a continuing saga. We ordered starters, including 2 pear, stilton and walnut salads, a veggie starter, then a veggie main, a roast pork and a beef (thought this was a roast, see later). While waiting too long again for the food to arrive, I heard a table behind us ask whether the brewery had be taken over recently, the waitress said yes and I thought, oh! Starters arrived and served up. Our 2 pear, stilton and walnuts came with no sight of pear. It was ok but really, not a sign of the 1st advertised constituent element. The waitress duly came back to enquire about the starter when we said, 'no pear'. Interesting response being, 'oh', 'that's strange, I plated these up, I must have forgotten', that was it! The only thought in my head then was I only hoped they remember my beef. Plates were gathered and we were asked if we wanted more drinks, yes please and off she went leaving the empty pint glasses on the table, called her back to take these. Now getting annoyed. It was not a very warm room as the fire had been left to go out. Another waitress tried in vain to rescue the fire, but to no avail. New bottled beer arrived in due course with what then was the customary 'sorry for the delay' but this time were told that they were 'manic' downstairs. Blimey, what on earth was the problem? I run businesses, having owned a bar/restaurant, I know full well the difficulties but also can see straight away a poorly run outfit, this was just that. What a shame, a truly special place that was ruined for me before we even got to the main course. The mains arrived eventually with the usual 'sorry for the wait'. Asked who was the pie for, blanks looks! Turned out this was the beef and ale pie, my beef. No menu to hand to check as I thought it was roast beef and by now I had llost the will to whip the dead horse. Other dishes good but not quite reaching expectation for the price. My £12.95 pie was nice, but not a pie. Served in a biggish teacup with a pastry lid, this is not a pie, and not what I really wanted. Pleasant though. Eat up, declined further food knowing more problems would inevitably present themselves, We left the table went downstairs to pay and talking with the staff found out the hall dining room was closed but do look inside. Did so, simply stunning. Left my wife with my wallet to pay up for a visit across the yard. Met at the car shortly afterwards and heard of various excuses given while she paid the full bill. We had thrown in our towel by then I'm afraid. This venue needs a serious shot in the arm. I was so disappointed. It deserves much, much better. Unless one feeds back like this nothing will change, and it really needs to.Good luck - I remain a huge fan of St. Peters beers.Paul & Lucy TirrellRutland

Went for dinner one evening while on holiday nearby. I'm so glad we called in to book. It looks very imposing from the outside, and I almost didn't go in as I thought it would be a bit stuffy, but all the staff were really friendly, and bar inside is just like a nice pub. Lovely antique Oak tables, benches & chairs. The dining hall is very impressive, (would be a lovely wedding venue) but we just wanted a cosy meal so sat in the bar area which was lovely. We could also have taken the dogs in there too which was nice. Food was great - I had the pie and veg (massive portions and absolutely delicious). But all of us were very happy with our meals. Cider and beer were great, even offering a local alcohol free beer option. There were a few small bistro tables outside overlooking the moat. A few people seemed to have pre-dinner drinks out there. Would definitely return if we visited the area again. Only open certain days / times, and occasionally booked out for weddings. So check website or phone to book.

The first disappointment was that the beer in the bar, where we had a pre-dinner drink, despite coming only a matter of metres from the brewery is served under gas pressure and is excessively chilled. The dining room itself - and the rest of the building - is very interesting and atmospheric, but the menu is very ordinary and in no way as special as the surroundings. The food itself was "OK" although a steak ordered as "medium" was overdone. Choice was limited and included such basic dishes as ham, egg and chips! There appeared to have been no attempt to source local produce.Service was good, although there were only three tables occupied on a Saturday night, so no pressure.I wouldn't bother going again.

The service is poor, the food is average and overpriced. I have never been to a restaurant where it has taken 20 mins to get menus and be asked if we want drinks. I have to agree with many of the 1 and 2 star reviews and I am disappointed to see the negative and defensive responses from the owners. A real, real shame as it used to be such a great day out. Sorry, just being honest. My advice to the restaurant owners would be to ask for customer feedback and listen to it - that's the only way things can improve.

We have been passing the St Peter's sign post on the main road for many years but as it was a glorious sunny afternoon a Sunday visit was on the cards.Went into the shop and booked up a tour around the brewery and as we were the only two there so we received a one to one tour which was very informative and the guide was brilliant at his job. Walked out with a case of St Peter's Cream Stout and noticed people pulling in and walking into the grand hall approached from the front door.Took a closer look and realised they were open so wandered in and went straight into what looked like a church building with seats carved out by hand an amazing surprise plus the tapestry on the far wall.A very polite young lady came in and spoke to us and we sat down and ordered a starter consisting of mackerel pate plus a side salad and toast to go with our filtered coffee. Nicely presented and prompt service from the staff as we were sharing the pate we did think one slice of roast was a little mean considering the cost and the quantity of pate provided. . It was a warm sunny afternoons and we were the only people sitting inside. Later on after paying we realised that there were tables and chairs outside round the back right by the moat. Ah well live and learn. As we travel from Norwich to Woodbridge frequently it will be a stop off point in the future but a bit way out from the main road for a quick cuppa. Looking forward to see what the Thursday curry night is like?

Came here for the beer festival which consisted of 10 beers. Hopefully next year will be bigger and better. Luke said he may have a chance to help create a craft beer and we wish him the best with that! Look forward to trying the nee beer! Anyway we were also interested in seeing the Hall and trying the food. The wife had a cheddar and blue cheese scone which came with cream cheese and chutney. Was absolutely stunning! The new owners seem keen on developing the Hall and we look forward to going back and trying a Sunday roast or an evening meal.

This beautiful hall was a pleasure to visit. The home made scones were delicious, as was the tea - 'proper' tea! We received a friendly welcome with our dogs and enjoyed a visit to the shop afterwards, where we purchased (and have since sampled - yum!) some beer. We'll return next year.

Limited menu, steak was over cooked, I asked for rare and it came up with 2 thirds of it being brown, not even slightly pink, no choice of potatoes had to have them sautéed. Was not even asked if we enjoyed the food as the staff were too busy! Will never go back. awful food!

On holiday in Suffolk and saw this place in Good Pub Guide; without satnav might not have found it; had lunch in the bar which was more homely and welcoming than the restaurant room and more how we like to eat; good food and wines reasonably priced but extremely limited choice. I went with a friend for her birthday. Initially on driving up to the venue I was very impressed, it is a lovely building. We walked in, no staff about, a young girl appeared and showed us into a large dining room, with lovely decor. Then the experience began. The waiting staff are very pleasant but absolutely clueless, they knew nothing about the food. They took ages to sort out drinks, the dining room is completely shut off from the rest of the building so you have to wait for the staff to come in.The Mint Soup was watery and tasteless, like a salty stock cube and some blended frozen peas. The accompanying bread roll was from the supermarket multipack (NEVER seen this in a restaurant before!)The main, a Pie was very bad. A slice of (Supermarket Pie) that was broken so they piled in in a heap in the middle of the plate, a few bits of veg on the side. I wish I had taken a photo.I don't actually want to waste any more time writing any more, can't quite believe the disappointment. I would imagine it will be closed down within the year, unless they are focusing on corporate events.

I came here with my son. He did a review and clearly the owner has had it removed after previously rejecting the comments. The owners comments started with don't get a boy to do a mans work!! So THIS TIME I will write the view. Don't tell me the comments we made were unwelcome. You asked us how the meal was and I replied disappointing.... Very disappointing. Don't welcome these comments, then don't ask I pointed out the food on the floor..... The owner said nobody else had sat there tonight... So I suggested that you reviewed your cleaning arrangements (it had clearly been there overnight)The food was poor. Not sure why we could keep hearing the microwave as we were assured it was freshly prepared on the premises... Even so. It was totally flavourless and my chicken curry had almost no chicken in it. Food presentation left lots to the imagination. It was just lumped onto the plate.. No aesthetics at all...Lovely setting. The beer is good. Why a brewery associates and risks it's reputation on this food setup is baffling. If the dragons were in the Den then this restaurant would be as dead as the proverbial DoDo.AVOID. AVOID. AVOID.

We were delighted to see on TripAdvisor that the restaurant is open again. Dinner on Friday was wonderful. Jill, the owner, is very welcoming and gets the service just right. Mains at £12.50, including St Pete's ale or wine, are amazing value. Simple food, but carefully prepared. The dining room in the great hall is not to be missed. We can't wait to try the Sunday lunch.

We had a fantastic afternoon here and the brewery tour was good also . I've been to St Peters a number of times for meals and found them amazing. Firstly the hall itself is beautiful with a lovely great hall dining room,a smaller bar dining room and lovely grounds, lawned area and moat. To sit outside for a drink or afternoon tea is so tranquil by the water looking across the fields. The recent acquisition of the chef, Christian, is an added bonus his food is to die for. Sunday lunch is traditional with Yorkshire puddings and veg and the evening meals on Friday and Saturday are equally as gorgeous. Even a cream tea is a joy in itself the scones are the best ever. I have no idea where the previous person ate but it certainly wasn't the St Peters I visit!! I wish Jill, Christian and all the staff all the very best since they have taken over and we will visit again and have already booked New Year as well as various events this summer. Well done and well worth a visit!

I haven't been to St Peter's for a while but heard that the Manager of the nearby Earsham Hall Tearoom, which I loved, had transferred there and thought we'd give it a try for lunch. Jill has only been there for a few weeks but her standards are just as high as at Earsham Hall and the food she produces just as good. She's a lovely woman who gives a place a really warm feeling. Lovely to see what she is doing with St Peters. I see that some of the reviews below weren't very good but please give this place a 2nd chance as now it has none of the negative things mentioned for the previous owners. Going on our experience today it will go from strength to strength. If she can produce even half of the good reviews she had for Earsham Hall Tearooms this is going to be a very special place again. Have a look at those to get an idea of what she will offer. And, of course, the venue is even more spectacular than her last and has the wonderful pluses of the moat and the beer.

Maybe we have been fortunate, but this has never happened to us before! As we knew we were going to be in Suffolk again, we booked a table at St Peter's Hall, having had such a good experience in April of 2013. However, on our arrival, the door was firmly shut, there was no one around, and a piece of paper pinned to the door said the restaurant was closed. Why had no one contacted us? We had reserved our table by email and our details were included in that booking. To make matters worse, on our arrival home a week later, I had in my inbox an email requesting a review of our meal there, and thanking us for going!

We booked for a Saturday night and expected to wait a while to be served. It was a good half hour after being seated that we were offered drinks. We were offered menus and it was then another 30 minutes or so until a rather unfriendly chap with the personality of a cricket bat, came to take our order. Again, a longer than reasonable wait for the starters to arrive. Moving on to the main courses, my husband ordered 'a trio of fish', when it arrived there appeared to be three mouthfuls of overcooked fish on th plate extremely poorly presented. We are by no means 'big eater's', but the portion sizes are laughable. One piece of advice for the staff of this establishment is be nice and friendly to customers. They pay your wages. I know that it's a chore to serve us customers but hey its your job, especially Mr cricket bat! Obviously will never return.

There was soft back ground music playing throughout the evening which was not intrusive at all. They were very busy this evening however the service we received was excellent and the staff were very attentive ensuring our evening was special. The food was excellent we choose Brancaster muscles as our starter and we were not disappointed followed by medallion of beef this was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. My husband finished his meal with the cheese board which offed a great choice and very good sized portions of the differing cheeses. We came away at the end of the evening feeling that it had been a special night for us both. Great venue fantastic food and attentive staff what more could one wish for.

We visited for Saturday lunch in Late December and ate in the hall. Unfortunately the dishes and deals mentioned on here were not on the menu we were offered and although it was a very atmospheric place to eat, the food itself was overpriced and the quantity (at least of mine) was positively miserly. Others in the group had larger portions and the chips looked nice but I guess you are paying for the venue, which was a bit cold and draughty too. Save it for a summer visit.

My review is based on the terrible customer service i have just received whilst trying to discuss the possiblity of a wedding reception at St. Peter's Hall, as recommended by a friend who held hers there and speaks highly of them. I havent visited and so cannot comment on the food etc. I initlally left 2 phone messages and 1 email over 3 days: no reply. I called today and was put through to a gentleman who showed absolutely no interest in my queries 'especially at a busy lunchtime'. I explained that the wedding section on their website has no information and says that we must call for further information. He said that they are concentrating more on the restaurant and not so interested in expanding the wedding side, but if i met up with him they could perhaps accommodate something, but if i wasnt sure what i wanted, he couldnt help me. I said i hadnt been married before, hence was calling for advice and a discussion about what they could offer. He couldnt offer even a rough estimate per head for a sit down dinner. He was rude and couldnt be any less interested. I will take my business to someone who actually cares a little. Such disappointing service for what i was told is a great site.

My husband suggested the brewery for a lunchtime treat. We had been putting the visit off as we thought it would be quite expensive. What a gorgeous building! We were warmly welcomed and seated quickly. We chose 2 courses for £10. We chose sticky chicken wings which were generous portion and pollack and chips and beef in ale pie. We were soon served with our meals and they were both lovely and reasonably portioned. They hold a fish night and a steak night. The only minus for me was that you could have a starter and main but I would have liked the option of dessert instead of starter. I loved the ambience and the surroundings and cannot wait to return.

Spent the weekend in South Norfolk visiting friends and wanted to go out for a meal with a difference. One quick phone call and we had managed to secure a table for four at very short notice.St. Peter's Brewery is somewhat off the beaten track and when you finally arrive, the drive along the winding lanes is well worth the effort. We were seated in the Medieval Hall and found that the menu caters for most tastes with some unusual twists on the norm. I had the smoked sprats as a starter and they were simply delicious. It was also nice to sample some of the Real Ales brewed by St. Peter's instead of drinking wine with the meal, so much so that I was pleased to find that Asda stock a couple of varieties back in London. Would I go back again, most definitely.

It is a little known fact that some restaurants do not change their cooking oil at the prescribed time. St Peter's chips and fried fish reflect their chef's rigorous attention to detail, they taste delicious - the oil is very fresh and clean. Some restaurants fry in "old" oil which contains food particles and burn bits - I know I have had some poor experiences. Good food and overall a very good experience. There was a slight glitch with the bill, but the manager sorted out immediately. I can heartily recommend.

We've been visiting the imposing medieval St Peter's Hall and the adjacent brewery for some years now. There is a choice of dining in the small bar at the rear of the building or in the magnificent hall, which is hung with tapestries and furnished in something of an ecclesiastical style - very impressive. We popped in for a light lunch, and were not disappointed as they were offering two courses for £10. We both had a tasty Binham Blue (cheese), bacon & avocado salad, then I opted for a stuffed pepper with couscous and my husband had smoked haddock in a mustard sauce with mashed potato. Portions were sufficiently large to prevent us from forcing down a pudding afterwards, which was a shame as there were some perennial favourites like Sticky Toffee Pudding and local artisan ice cream on offer. Never mind, there will be a next time! The full range of St Peter's Ales are available by the bottle, and some are available on draught. All in all, a lunchtime well spent, though it would have been better with more people dining in the great hall instead of the small bar. The only drawback? Rather cool - take a cardy!

We visited the restaurant with some friends on Saturday evening. The main entrance door was closed, we were directed through the staff entrance adjacent to the kitchen and into the small bar.The restaurant was closed for a private function, which we had not been told when we booked,Our reserved table in the small bar did not have enough chairs, they had been taken by another group in the bar.My meal consisted of a very bland soup as starter, cod and chips as main, chips were ok but the fish was very oily, leaving a pool in the bottom of the plate, our local chip shop does better. Desert was a chocolate pot with stem ginger ice cream and a shortbread biscuit, chocolate pot was good but the ice cream didn't arrive. All served by a surly waitress. Overpriced.

My husband's holiday treat was to attend the St Peters Brewery tour. We booked the tour at 11am on a Saturday followed by a booking (thanks to a Tripadvisor's advice) at the restaurant, run by a different organisation, at 12md. The tour was interesting and run by very friendly and helpful staff on the tour and in the shop. We tasted 8-10 beers, much to my husband's delight. There were discounted beers in the shop - for poorly labelled beers or end of line - a bargain at £7- £18 per case. After putting our purchases in the boot of the car we crossed the car park to the imposing 13 century Medieval House with moat, only to see a sign directing us to a side door, as there was a private function on in the main hall. This was a shame, as we had hoped to sit in the main hall for our reserved lunch. It would have been useful to know about this in advance. The greeting could have been more welcoming - as the owner (??) looked as the clock and said it was a bit early - we had booked online for 12md and it was now 12.10. The smaller public area was pleasant enough with beams and old tables and chairs. The staff seemed rather tense - no doubt by the impending private wedding at 3pm. The atmosphere felt tense, therefore - and even more so when other people arrived for lunch, and soon 4 out of a total of 5 tables were filled...and then a party of 30 bikers arrived on motorbikes for coffee, prior to their brewery tour! They were ushered upstairs and the staff were then frantically putting sugar into bowls and milk into jugs to cater for them too! It sounds comical now!The food arrived - I had the salmon and my husband had the gammon - both were delicious and cooked to perfection.Would we go again? For the food an unreserved YES. For the atmosphere - that would depend. If the welcome and atmosphere were as friendly and relaxed as the brewery tour staff, then yes. A subtle thing but such a contrast between the two that it makes all the difference to the overall feeling about a place and the decision to return or not.

A beautiful mish mash of an ancient building, with a moat dating from the 10 th century. Part of the building was built from salvage from a local nunnery after the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500's. We ate in a wood panelled hall with high monastic windows, a Belgian tapestry on one wall, various artefacts from churches etc. We sat on French choir stalls! Our party of eight enjoyed the lunchtime special of 2 courses for £10 which was very reasonable. Delicious fish, chips and mushy peas followed by chocolate and pistachio brownie with tasty Aldeburgh ginger ice cream. Everyone enjoyed their dishes and the kids had a reasonably priced menu too. Great selection of award winning beers as well of course from the brewery on site which produces 35,000 bottles a week. Gourmet pub grub at lunch and many other options outside our special offer that looked delicious. A snug looking bar area and tables outside overlooking the moat as well as various upstairs rooms made up the house plus barns housing the brewery and a shop can be found on site, you can go on tours as well. Make a detour for a meal here!

Discovered the Medieval hall house of this fabulous place by accident last year as I was driving from Suffolk to Norfolk. The majestic moated house in this remote area is a magnet on the horizon and curiosity led me to investigate. The place had just changed hands and was not open for food or a drink at the time.I came back in April this year for supper and sat in the small bar room with just three tables for dining. (The much grander dining hall is open on certain evenings). The welcome given by Stuart, the co-owner, was a good old-fashioned display of genuine hospitality. Helpful and knowledgable, he runs the bar, takes the orders at table and brings the food; on my 3rd visit, he was in the kitchen (standing-in for the resident chef who had left early) where he cooked THE best ever deep-fried haddock and chips! They have "specials" nights here with discounted steaks and a pint of beer for a mere £11. The range of St Peter's beers and ales from the on-site brewery is extensive and delicious.Just a few miles south of Bungay, seek this place out - you will love it!

We were spending a week in the area of Bungay and visited St Peter's Hall for Sunday lunch - fortunately we were able to eat without a reservation, but I would suggest making one, certainly if you are wishing to dine between 12 and 2 pm (but the restaurant is open until 4 pm) - it seems to be very popular with small family gatherings.Traditional roast beef Sunday lunch was on the menu and although we did not partake of this, seeing it arriving for other diners, made us think perhaps we should have chosen it - it was beautifully presented as a tower with a large Yorkshire pudding perched onthe top. However, we had decided to be different! My unusual starter was half a pint of spratts served with a horseradish cream and beetroot - original and delicious. Although not vegetarian, I decided to go down this avenue and chose a stuffed red pepper - again excellent food. The service was also friendly and prompt. We ate in great surroundings - a wood panelled, chandaliered, medieval dining hall, which was definitely not a run of the mill setting! Take your camera! Please note - if you go on a Sunday, then brewery tours are not on offer. The small shop is definitely worth a visit - samples are offered and there are many beers/lagers to choose from. Check the website for details.

We visited St Peter's at Saturday lunchtime time for a tour of the brewery followed by lunch. The tours are £5 and we were taken round by John who was very knowledgeable about the industry and answered all our questions thoroughly. We had long wondered about the brewing process of ale so were glad to have taken the tour. To end, we had a tasting session of a variety of St Peters ale... we probably tried about 8 ales, i felt a bit inebriated (some of them are strong!) - it was good fun. We ate lunch in the hall afterwards, both had fish and chips (pollock £9.50) which was very nice and soaked up some of the aforementioned ale sampling. The service was friendly and efficient and the setting was unusual and memorable.Be warned, the brewery is in the middle of nowhere, but we got there fine using the postcode and sat nav. This is one of the most comforting places to eat in East Anglia. Stuart the owner is very welcoming and the trip down the lonely lane is well worth the effort. Last Friday I opted for the special deal of 8oz rump steak which including a pint of the excellent Suffolk gold was a mere £11! It was so succulent and perfectly cooked. My partner had the haddock which he raved over. I prefer the warmth of the bar over the grandeur of the mediaeval hall but when the weather gets better and it gets busier I am sure that will be good too. Apparently, the chef is from another well known eatery in the area and St Peter's are lucky to have him.

So many friends have raved about this restaurant so we decided to try it. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. For a Thai restaurant, I found the menu a little strange. We ordered chicken satay, pork spring rolls, calamari? Portion size was fairly small and i wasn't keen on the spring rolls. Mains We had pork noodles, monk fish, burger and 2 kids meals. Monk fish with sautéed potatoes. The let down was the spuds were just new potatoes and hadn't seen a pan. Pork noodles were my order and the noodles tasted like ones I have at home in the cupboard. I'd expect decent noodles. Burger looked good and son love it. 2 kids meals went down a treat. The bill was in my opinion high for what we received however I've not been out in a while and there is a crisis out there. I personally wouldn't go back however other family members said they would. So I wouldn't recommend it buti wouldn't put you off either, I guess it's down to personal taste.
