came in here as we had just been to the National Portrait Gallery and wanted somewhere quick to eat. Quick was hardly the word. After a 30 mins wait for just a sandwich and soup we were almost ready to leave but the food arrived. How difficult can it be to put a light under the soup to heat up whilst preparing the order before ours? Apparently there was only one member of staff in the kitchen - skeleton staff. There could have been skeleton customers as well. Sorry, but at nearly £20 this should have been executed with speed and efficiency.

We did not stay here but decided on a late lunch out after going to the National Portrait Gallery; we wanted somewhere quick and easy to eat with plenty of seating. No wonder there was plenty of seating - we ordered a sandwich and soup and after nearly 30 mins wait we were on the point of leaving when the food arrived. Apparently there was only one member of staff in the kitchen. Skeleton staff - there were nearly skeleton customers! How difficult is it to put a light on under the soup to heat up whilst making the previous order? Food was passable but at nearly £20 for soup and a sandwich this should have been executed with efficiency and speed. Sorry, shan't be returning.

Visited here for sparkling afternoon tea using a wowcher, £24 for 2 people.nice selection of sandwiches, cakes, scones and desserts. Not too fancy, just right for us. Champagne on arrival, tea/coffee included, friendly service. Took the inlaws, we all enjoyed it. Not the Ritz! But you are not paying Ritz prices. Overall, excellent visit, not something we would do every day, nice treat.

the location is nice, close enough to piccadilly circus, but far enough that you can take a moment to breathe and rest your feet away from all the hustle and bustle. The seating area is nice too, with comfy seats and we could pick our own table. A friendly waitress immediately took our drink order. Unfortunately that's where the pros ended. The coffees we ordered did arrive fast, but was tepid. Despite there only being 2 other tables occupied, it took 10 minutes for us to get the attention of a waitress to order and then another 30 minutes(!) for our food to arrive (and only after we enquired after it). The food was okay, not that bad but not that great either. I wouldn't have minded, but i think the prices are quite high for mediocre food. It was nicely portioned though. We tried to get our bill and it took another 15 minutes for our waitress to bring it over. I'm confused as to why the service was so slow, since there were only 3 customers outside. The waitresses were very friendly, but felt a bit incompetent, like they werent sure what they were doing themselves. All in all, not a great experience. Only after we left and saw our bill did we realize it was part of a hotel. Maybe that explains the long waits in between as I suppose the waitresses/chefs may have other things to deal with.

Arrived at 12.10 for lunch only for waitress to enquire as to why we were there! We advised we were there for lunch, and she answered that lunch starts at 12pm - it was ten past. Once seated, I explained I had a WOW card (persons living/working in Westminster get various discounts from various establishments) and confirmed the 50% food bill. I was then asked if I wanted any Tea or Coffee before ordering!!!!! What???? Tea and Coffee are served after food! The waitress did not use this opportunity to remove the tea and coffee cups and sugars from the table or the menus! We were brought the menu, and I noticed it was different to what was on the menu board outside. I queried this and was told twice that the menu in from of me was correct. As you can see from my pictures, the menu was the "room Service" and "bar" menu and NOT the correct "A la carte" Squares brasserie menu. We ordered anyhow (after being told our first choice sold out - yet we were first in restaurant) as we were on a time limit and were already hungry. The food was lovely, but I would still not eat here again, as the service was worse than terrible. And before you say it may have been because they were busy, we were the ONLY guests in the restaurant! There was no sense of job satisfaction and it was like a comedy of errors. trying to pay, trying to get the waitresses attention - don't bother, in the end I had to be abrupt and tell them we needed to pay and get back to work.

Was a little concerned before we got there, as the day before I had read all the reviews on here but had a Wowcher for it. When we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely waitress who was very nice and settled us with a glass of bubbly before asking for the wowcher which we happily handed over (as always wowcher tell you on the voucher that you need to take it with you). They left us for a few minutes then came back with an amazing afternoon tea. The brie and cranberry sandwiches were lovely, but the ham and picallilly and the turkey and stuffing sandwiches were obviously pre-packed sliced meat. However, as we paid only £12.50 per head and the cakes were delicious, you can't really moan! We had fruit and plain scones with the usual clotted cream, then a mince pie each with brandy cream, then at the top there was creme brulee with mincemeat which was delicious, a mulled wine poached pear tart which again was scrummy, but by that point we were so full we couldn't manage the mini chocolate cakes. The service was lovely throughout - they waited until they could see we had finished our bubbly before asking if we would like teas, came and checked if everything was ok. No complaints really. For £12.50 it had a lot of variety.

Having had a superb afternoon tea at the Hyde Park Thistle Hotel a few months ago on a Travelzoo deal - reviewed by me after my visit, I was delighted to see a Wowcher deal for tea at the Thistle Royal Trafalgar. Upon arrival there was no record of our booking which we had made for the opening time for afternoon teas as we had spent the previous night in Central London. We were asked to wait in the lounge as the kitchen were unprepared, this despite not a single person being in the restaurant. The bread was slightly stale, the ham and turkey were of the processed variety found in supermarket cheap vacuum packs, the chocolate cake was dry and horrible, the mincemeat crème brulee was mincemeat topped with soft custard and no crunchy topping, the scones were cheap supermarket style, served with 2 types of cream and one small jar of jam, the type found on hotel buffet breakfasts. No spoon supplied with the creams or jam, so we had to pinch one from the next table. There was one mince pie and one individual pear tart for a tea for two. We asked for a second pear tart, which was nice, we did not try the cheap supermarket style mince pie. The restaurant was completely void of atmosphere, but this could be party due to the lack of customers, by the time we left 3 other tables were occupied. On the plus side the waitresses were very sweet, but this would not be enough for me to ever visit this hotel again.

Booked Christmas afternoon tea for my daughter and I. We were seated in a very cramped area by a window overlooking the bleak concrete area outside. The food was of a very poor standard. Sandwiches were mismatched, some tiny some huge. My 10 year old som makes better scones than the minute heavy offerings we were served! The cakes appeared to be defrosted and were dry snd tasteless. Not once did the restaurant staff come near us to ask if we needed a refill of tea or if everything was ok. I can only assume it was because they already knew the answer!

We only went to this hotel for the Christmas Afternoon Tea deal and it was the absolute worst dining experience of my life and I still feel sick by the memory of it. For reference, here is the description they posted for the afternoon tea: 'Upon arrival, you and your lucky companion will be seated and treated to a warming glass of mulled sparkling wine. Then kick off the feast with delicate sandwiches including turkey and stuffing, brie and cranberry and smoked salmon and cream cheese before moving on to chocolate cake, mulled wine poached pear tart, mince pie crème brûlée, winter berry scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, all served with lashings of vanilla and cinnamon whipped cream and accompanied by a frothy cappuccino or cup of tea. ' First of all, my companion was anything but lucky, in fact I was embarrassed to have suggested going to this event and I'm sure to him it felt more like a punishment than something exciting or pleasurable in any way. Now moving onto why... 'A warming glass of mulled sparkling wine' - as suggested in the description, mulled wine is expected to be hot, it is also spicy and sweet. Upon arrival we were offered a glass of cheap champagne, when I questioned it saying that we were told we would be getting mulled wine we got a confused response of 'Oh, well yes, the champagne is the mulled wine'. At this stage we accepted it and anything but warming we were given a glass of what tasted like Lambrini, whatever it was it wasn't mulled wine in any way. Obviously if this was all that was wrong with the meal I wouldn't be writing. Unfortunately for us this was just the beginning. Our afternoon tea arrived and it was 'delicate' sandwiches made with bread so stale it was rock solid. The bread was absolutely inedible and in the end I complained about it to the waiter and he eventually made us a fresh load of sandwiches, I can imagine that the food they were serving had been made in the morning or perhaps even the night before and been left out to spoil. The contents of the sandwich were no better; the turkey and stuffing was cheap turkey slices that tasted heinous with unrecognizable 'stuffing', the brie and cranberry was in fact brie with what tasted and smelt more like jam. There were also egg mayonnaise sandwiches again the bread was incredible stale and I had a small mouthful of the egg filling and was revolted to realise that it was warm and it instantly made me feel sick. The sweet food consisted of two bite size chunks of chocolate cake, one stale and inedible mince pie, one creme brulee and one droopy, unappetizing berry and custard tart. There was no sign of the poached pear tart and the 'winter berry scones' were one stale plain scone and one stale sultana plain scone. There was no sign of a frothy cappuccino or cup of tea. Myself and my guest hardly touched a thing despite having paid £24 for it. I felt ill from the warm and stale egg mayonnaise sandwich and as i said, even now the memory of it is making me heave. At £24 it is still grossly overpriced for what we received - You couldn't pay me to go there again, let alone charge myself and my friend £12 each for the displeasure. The deal was a huge rip off and it felt like a lazy attempt to cash in on christmas. The staff knew that we were unhappy with our meal, especially as we had left almost everything, but didn't offer any solution or condolence. There is no way in hell I would serve what I was served today to anybody without embarrassment, Thistle Hotel made Fawlty Towers look like a haven.

We arrived just after 5:30 pm and had the choice of any table as we were the first to arrive. We ordered a bottle of wine and then ordered the meal. Then the waiting ..... It took an age for the starter to arrive, the main course took just as long. I am not sure where the staff were most of the time; however, a young girl did appear to put glasses on the tables but dissappeard, too. The food was really dulll and uninspiring: an overpriced prawn cocktail followed by a Chicken Tikka that was really no different to a ready meal from the Co-op. My partner's prawn cocktail starter plate was not cleared until he was halfway through his main course. We were there for just over an hour and during that time only 2 other diners arrived. If the staff cannot attend 2 tables, what would it be like if the restaurant was full? The bill arrived with a 12.5% service charge included (there was also space for your gratuity, too!!) I used my tastecard and did get the usual discount. When we were asked how the meal was, I did say that I thought it was rather average, that it was a bit presumptuous to add a service charge and that the prices were very high for what we were served. The response was that the charges were justified because it is a 4 star hotel!!! Now - I would be happy to pay 4 star hotel prices if we were served 4 star hotel food by 4 star hotel staff. Happy to put this all behind us. My advise, find somewhere else - there's plenty to choose from around Leicester Square / Covent Garden. I notice from previous postings that the restaurant manager has not replied to any of the postings here. Is he as elusive as his/her staff?

Please give this a miss, because there were 8 of us, table booked the day before and the gentleman who took the booking asked "are you restricted by time?" and the answer was "yes" as it was our lunch hour. So he said if you could have your orders ready when you come in it would be helpful. So, we did just that, even down to ordering the wine. WE WAITED ONE HOUR after walking into the restaurant until the food started to come out - and it wasn't particularly spectacular. Needless to say, we did not pay the "discretionary" 12.5% service charge!!!!!!!!!!!! There were three other tables of 2 people so, god knows, what would happen if the restaurant was full!!! (starve to death??)

I booked to have afternoon tea here for 2. We used a voucher we had purchased. We were seated straight away (awful view I was opposite the tv of the massage parlour so whilst there I had Demo's of foot massages!) The service wasn't a bad pace, however it wasn't particularly attentive. We received our sparkling wine, then waited a while before our drinks order or food arrived. Between 2 we received 2 croissants, one sandwich and 2 mini rolls. Quite a few of these were fish fillings, either tuna or salmon (it would have been nice to have more that weren't fish). The most disappointing thing for me was that the scones and cakes were shop. If I wanted Mr Kipling angel cakes or bake wells I wouldn't have chosen to eat them here. The 3 stars I gave is because for the voucher price it was worth it. I wouldn't be saying that if. Paid full price.

Me and my partner went to the restaurant for a quick meal the waitress thought a jack Daniels and diet coke was food and was saying they didn't have steak or fish and we had to call another waiter to understand our drinks order. Then the first waitress came back we asked for a half roast chicken with just chips and gravy for myself and a fish cake for my partner we also wanted a bread basket which she said they didn't have we then ordered garlic bread with cheese as it was the nearest thing we then asked the other waiter and he said they do bread baskets so we ordered one for the starter. When we ordered the chicken and fish cake we asked for them to arrive at the same time with the garlic bread we then waited 25 mins and just the fish cake arrived with the bread basket and garlic bread, the fish cake was rock hard and very disappointing. We then waited a further 30 mins for my chicken which was still not cooked yet so we asked the waiter how long it would be and he said a further 10 to 15 mins so we paid for what we ate and left without the main it is the worst experience we've had in any place we've eaten. I would never even order a drink here again as the service is terrible.

I got a deal with last minute.com for a pre theatre meal at squares. My friend and I had treated each other for Christmas. we arrived at 6pm at Squares restaurant as we had got lost. On arrival there was no one at reception, when someone did arrive I handed her the confirmation letter from last minute. She kept looking at it and then informed me that it wasn't the right sort of confirmation letter and did I have another? The order number was clearly visible at the top of the letter, however by 6.20pm we were still not seated and three other staff were now involved. She wanted me to go to her office and get onto my e.mail and print out another confirmation letter. i pointed out that the letter would be exactly the same as the one she had in her hand and that to spend another 15 minutes of my time in her office was not the sort of evening I had in mind!! I pointed out that my name was hand written on her list of reservation for the evening and I suggested that as it was now nearly 6.30pm she should seat us, give us a menu and argue this out while we ate, i also assured her that I would e-mail her the letter from last minute when I got home. We then had to eat a starter and a main course in half and hour. She came back while we were eating and still tried to get me to go to her office, saying that she couldn't process our bill without the confirmation letter. She gave me her e.mail address and made me spell it out (spell it, she said!!) so I was sure I knew the correct address. Another couple who came in after us seemed to have the same problem. We were made to feel awkward and difficult, we had to bolt our meal which gave me an upset stomach in the theatre. The whole situation was badly handled and unprofessional and it ruined our evening meal. The restaurant need to deal with last minute over this. Thank goodness One Man Two Guvernors was brilliant.

Me and my husband went there as part of a deal for the afternoon tea. The staff were friendly and helpful but the food was pretty awful. We got a few sandwiches, the only fillings were ham, some eggy mixture and tuna with cucumber. The tuna tasted more like cat food and all the fillings were spread really thin, 99% bread with 1% filling. We also got two scones which were halved scew served with cream that was so hard it was more like butter than cream. The scones also had raisins which was unusual, I know a lot of people who don't eat raisins. I didn't even touch the two squares of cake. overall, a pretty meek experience, came in hungry looking forward to a nice tea, but left soon after arriving, still hungry.

We went there after we bought a special offer groupon which included a "Welcome" champagne and an all you can eat breakfast. We, i start my review saying that we got the champagne right before leaving, this explains everything about the way the restaurant is managed. They simple forgot! there were maybe 3 tables. I do not blame the waitress, i blame who is suppose to arrange everything.Furthermore, the waitress was working like crazy doing her best, and 2 other girls, who i do not know what their role was, simply did not do anything. At a certain point the buffet run out of plates. Waited 5 minutes to get some. The management in this hotel definitely needs to go back to school. About the food: i think they want to save energy. Everything was half cooked. Bread toasted only on 1 side, omelette was basically still in the chicken and the sausage pink inside.

My wife and I visited the restaurant last Sunday for Breakfast. Upon arrival we were made extremely welcome by very smart, polite and professional staff. There was an extensive choice of hot or cold buffet style food including the usual cereals, fresh fruit and fruit juice. Our waitress was very attentive and ensured all our needs were met; indeed she came to ask frequently if all was OK. The dining room was very modern and well presented. We thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful breakfast experience.

Dear readerswe've never done this before, but felt compelled to write a review after returning from s truly shocking afternoon tea 'experience' at the Thistle, Royal Trafalgar Hotel this afternoon.Although the package was a KGB deal, we hoped and expected something a bit special - sadly, this was dire start to finish. We had to wait ages for a seat and then were left ages after...the scones were cold and blatently from a packet, as were the 3 measly cakes that were tired sweaty little things. Sandwiches were made with stale bread and as for the tea...we had to ask for tead, otherwise we'd have been forgotten. When at last it did arrive, we were told that they'd run out of tea pots, so we had to share a pot for one between two. And to top it all, my tea cup had lip stick stain on it.I hate to sound like a grumbly old snob, but afternoon tea should be a leasurely and satisfying, quintessentiaaly English experience in my view - sadly, this failed to meet any of these requirements, and we left the hotel within the hour (at the staff's request as they needed the lounge for a function!) to get a sushi.Avoid - try The Grand at Kings X instead, much better.

21st june 2012 - had booked with a special deal from KGB DEALS for the luxury tea for two package - usual price "worth up to £60 at The Royal Trafalgar Thistle Hotel"very cleverly worded, as it certainly wasn't worth £60.00 and the food & presentation were nothing much like the picture on the hotel's website, much to my embarrassment, as it was a birthday treat for a friend.we were seated in some sort of departure lobby. no tablecloths at all - coffee was served directly in a cup - not a pot, tea in a small porcelain pot - no "silver" coffee or tea pots . 2 tiny tarts 2 tiny bits of cake & 2 scones . 2 of the sandwich portions looked and tasted as though they contained salad cream (only) - no coffee or tea refills were offered. found some very truthful pics on facebook which replicated my own experiencei assume therefore that the contents of the actual meal/experience were devalued specially to fit in with the cheaper price reflected in the offer. quite a big misrepresentation therefore , as i find it hard to believe that anyone could get away with charging £60.00 for this normally.KGB STILL OFFERING THIS DEAL, though i cannot believe that i'm the only one who contacted them afterwards to express my dismay

My daughter treated me to a high tea at The Royal for my birthday and we went last Friday. Booked for 2.30 we were on time. Oldish couple already there as were a younger couple. The older couple had there pot of tea but we didn't realise that they hadn't yet had their champers. After a little while the young couple were given their sandwiches - older couple still waiting for champers. Young couple were now given champers, we hadn't had anything. Young couple were now given plates to eat their sandwiches from - older couple still waiting as were we. Man from the older couple gets out a bag of crisps and begins to eat them at which point a waiter approaches and asks if everything is OK!! By now we were given our champers and everything arrived when it should, just very late. Still waiting, the older couple eventually got up and left when the younger couple were served with their coffee. The waiting staff didn't have a clue who had been served or what with - it was only when the next shift came on duty that things improved. My daughter was so embarrassed and kept apologising but I must admit I found it all quite amusing!

Had a voucher that got us an afternoon tea for two for 19 quid. Service was lovely, the little guy with the high pitched voice was lovely, very helpful and polite, I was a bit worried at 1st because I didn't know if we would get treated different because of a voucher usage.Anyways, we didn't, the three tier cake stand came out with mini sandwiches and cakes, a slate came out with three scones all was fine. I changed my sparking wine for an Appletizer, and my partner ate the smoked salmon sarnies, I must admit, had I thought it through, I would have called ahead to ask for a vegi selection of sandwiches. There was lettuce with egg mayo, ham tomato and mustard and smoked salmon. The top tier had three cakes, carrot. Chocolate and a strawberry tart, I don't get why you'd have three per two people, same with the scones, but hey, not an issue. For 19 quid, I liked what we got, I wouldn't have wanted to pay full price. My wife and I visited Squares (a restaurant within The Thistle Hotel) for dinner as part of a meal+theatre package. The face value of the tickets meant dinner at Squares cost around £10 per head for a 2 course meal. On the plus side, they know their audience - our orders were taken, served and we had finished both courses in less than 30 minutes! Unfortunately that's where the list of pros stops. We could only choose from 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 puds - very limited choice, esp. for those with specific dietary requirements. The food was luke warm, small portions and bland. It reminded us of school dinners (but not the sort Jamie strives for). If you go, go for what's on stage and/or cos you're on a budget, and keep reminding yourself it's a 2 course meal in central London for £10, just a 2 minute walk from theatreland.

This restaurant is nowhere near as bad as the previous reviewers have described! We bought a last minute.com deal and were running a little late for our booking at 5.30pm where there were already several diners sat and the service was good, not slow at all. The food menu was limited but the options were all really appetising - I had the pate with caramalised onion chutney and crutons for starters, the sausage and mash with onion gravy for mains and the chocolate tart for desert (we paid extra £4 for the third course). No complaints at all! My sister had the pasta for mains which was also very tasty but she spotted the haddock and chips at the table opposite and had serious food envy....! :-) We were out just over an hour later with plenty of time to collect tickets before 'Death and the Maiden' show which was right round the corner. Excellent evening of good food and excellent entertainment - would definitely recommend to anyone considering this dinner and show deal! Plus we went on a Monday night which was a quiet night so the theatre upgraded our tickets, we were six rows from the front which was excellent considering we paid only £20 per person for dinner and a show - you really can't go wrong! :-)

We booked as a Lastminute theatre-meal deal. Of course, the menu was limited for this deal, but for the price, it's hard to complain. The staff were all very attentive and friendly, making the meal seem nicer than it actually was. I had the pate with a very nice chutney for a starter, we both had the fish & chips for mains and my partner had the creme brulee for desert. It was all at the level of good pub fare-- all decent, not fine cuisine but adequate portions. With the service so fast and friendly, this is a good deal when coupled with the theatre afterwards.

With only a half full restaurant, eating at a non busy time, we simply ordered a main course each for me and my wife, how difficult could you get ? don't forget we were in a restaurant, not a public library ! We waited about 25 mins for my steak to come, TOO LONG ! however was to be honest great, the chef here is top class. After waiting another 5 mins my wife urged me to begin so I started eating slowly while we waited for my wife's meal. So we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited....after 20 mins I grabbed the waitress which almost had to be a rugby tackle as these people seem more interested in running around the restaurant flapping and panicking and forgetting that eye contact is crucial. We had to remind the waitress that my wife was waiting for her meal, and her look was pretty worrying, I mean why on earth would my wife want her meal, sitting in a restaurant, opposite her husband, eating his steak ?? The waitress scuttled off to talk to her East European colleagues, and finally came back and said my wife's meal would be 10 mins! So we waited, and waited, and waited and...well you get the message. After another 20 mins they brought out a nice looking risotto, which was nothing like what she ordered, so that was sent back. So basically they not only forgot my wife's meal, but they lost the order as well. The waitress staff working here clearly have NO idea of how to run a simple restaurant. The chef and kitchen staff were excellent, although that poor little bell on the service counter in the kitchen had its poor little knocker well and truly rang off. The chef was ringing it profusely to try and get them to serve the food, however to no avail, the waitress's just kept ignoring it. The chef kept coming to the door with an angry look, and even had to come out and speak to the head waitress, who was to be honest having trouble keeping up with the English language, never mind running a restaurant. After waiting nearly 45 mins between my meal arriving and still no sign of my wifes meal, we just got up and walked out. I explained to the head waitress that there was NO chance we were going to pay for my lovely 20 quid rib eye and two glasses of wine, and we would just go somewhere else before my poor wife starved to death. She was kind of apologetic, the kind where she looked like she had accidentally ran over my pet rabbit ! Again not trained to handle situations like this. We were offered a free meal in London, but we tried to explain we actually lived 300 miles away and London was a one off treat, except the part where we tried to eat in Squares. This again seemed to fly over her head. I'd love to give this review the true value it deserves but I'm afraid the score does not go into the minus numbers ! So I'll have to be very very very kind and give it a 1. Apologies to the chef, since his rib eye was gorgeous, this guy knows how to cook, its a very great pity that the front of house staff are incompetent and completely unable to do the job. I would say (Owner of Squares Chain of Restaurants) that this is a very clear lesson here, that although East Europeans are very very cheap and very eager to work until they drop, they unless you train them properly, how do you expect them to provide even the most basic level of customer service, let alone do the job properly ?
