My husband and I stopped in to Spiggie to visit the loch and the beach. We pulled into the Spiggie Hotel thinking we might get a drink or some tea. No one was there initially, but we ducked into the bathrooms and as we came out we met the owner. She made us tea and chatted and told us the best places to go nearby. It was emblematic if what a friendly and welcoming place Shetland is. Stop by and say hello!

I chose this for my last night on Shetland as it is near the airport, but not too near. I also booked an evening meal. Arriving before it opened I spent a relaxing time on the nearby beach. The restaurant was not crowded and I was given a table in the conservatory area to make the most of the evening sunshine. There was a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains, and 3 desserts. Although it took quite a while, when the food arrived it was excellent. Clearly not pulled out of the freezer and into the microwave. I chose the Morrocan lamb followed by chocolate pudding and ice cream. Despite the presence of the bar on the ground floor my en suite room on the first floor was quiet and I slept well. As I had an early flight I didn't stay for breakfast. I would thoroughly recommend both the hotel and the restaurant.

We did not stay here but we stopped for food on our walk through the beautiful Shetland Islands. Amazing fresh fish and chips which Chris, the owner, cooked. He was very helpful and helped point us in the right direct for the rest of the day's walking. One of our highlights! Thank you so much!

What to say about The Spiggie Hotel? It looked closed on arrival at 6:30 pm but we were welcomed into the bar. Surprisingly there was a draught IPA. Very good too! We had phoned to book dinner - advised - as there don't seem to be many non residents. There was a limited menu but everything was made fresh. And it was excellent! Loved the mushroom starter, the lasagne and the sticky toffee pudding. And the complimentary biscuits on the bar... Prices all reasonable too. By the way, the view from the dining room is exceptional. And the owners are lovely. A great meal.

Having spent a week on Unst we used Spiggie Hotel for our last few nights on Shetland. Spiggie House occupies a very nice position with views across Spiggie Loch and easy walking distance to Spiggie Beach and the Loch side. We were made very welcome at the property and our room had excellent views. The room was clean and tidy with a large en suite. Evening meals were served in the restaurant. There is also a small separate bar should you just wish to sit and have a drink, or two! We found the food in the restaurant was excellent with a varied menu on the nights we stayed. We found Spiggie House a good base from which to explore St Ninians Isle and that part of the Shetland coastline. Spiggie Hotel is only about 25 minutes from the airport. At the time of our stay the owner advised us that he had accepted an offer for the sale of Spiggie House so there may be changes on the way at Spiggie House Hotel.

We had a really nice Sunday lunch at this little out of the way hotel. The owner accepts non-guests on certain days with reservations only. Started with a locally made gin and tonic, then went to an appetizer of mushrooms in a cream sauce. Main dishes were poached salmon, Moroccan land and a local beef stew, all with really nice sides. Finished with three different desserts. Very reasonable for the quality of the food accompanied by friendly and caring service. Be daring and take a detour off the main north/south highway, but call or email to make a reservation first.

Our lunch at the Spiggie Hotel was such a wonderful experience. The proprietor and staff were so friendly, and the food was fresh, local and fantastic. We started with a drink in the cool little bar area, then moved into the restaurant for lunch. Our table had an amazing view over the loch and ocean. It's a small place and it wasn't busy during our visit (just one other party at lunch on a Sunday afternoon). Really, this experience was a highlight of our 2-week trip around the British Isles. This is a lovely spot, overlooking Spiggie Loch, near the coast, Foula in the distance on a good day. The restaurant has the views, but the bar is cosier and you can eat the same food in it. The main courses are beautifully cooked, with some unusual ones like Moroccan stew along with the staples like haddock and chips. Some things do take a while to come, but they'll warn you about that and it's a good place to relax. I'd give it a 5, were it not that, as usual in Shetland, the dessert menu is full of stodgy puddings, including the ubiquitous and sooo outmoded sticky toffee pudding, which every restaurant in Scotland seems to feel obliged to offer. I suppose it might make sense in iwnter but who the hell wants that sort of dessert in summer? But in fairness, after a very generous plateful of dinner you'd be lucky to have room...

Normally you need to book, but we took a chance and called in to eat. The chef decided that we could be fitted it and instead of bringing a menu we had a discussion about the fish that he had available and the sauces that he could create. We ended up with monkfish in a cream and garlic sauce after a starter, in my case, of mackerel. We sat in the bay window looking out at the sun going down over the loch and the bay, with the cliffs of Foula in the far distance. The bar also served an excellent pint of Lerwick Brewery Shetland pale, one of only three bars in the Islands with cask beer that we discovered. It's possible that I have had better food and beer and seen a better view, but I can't bring them to mind at the moment. Put them all together in the same place at the same time, and I reckon that it is about as good as it ever gets. Go there (but remember to book!).

We booked this restaurant 3 nights in advance as when I tried to book for that evening I was told they were fully booked, I had tried to call several times and left several messages.. I had arranged to eat at 6.30 but was called back and asked if we could rearrange for 6 as they had a party of 16 coming in at 6.30. We arrived early, to find the place locked up, although we were greeted by a very friendly man who opened up the bar and gave us drinks. At this point the building was quite uninviting, however a group of travellers arrived soon after and the waiter informed us of the specials etc and the place had a bit more atmosphere. The menu was limited and like every restaurant in Shetland it did not take advantage of the local seafood available. Having said that my meal was lovely,i had smoked haddock in a sauce with home made chips. The service was good, friendly and efficient. The dining room is dated, the decor needs updating and the fake plants are not incongruous, the spider plants on the windowsills look scruffy, but the fresh alstromeira on the table were lovely.

Spiggie Hotel is alright. We stopped for a buffet for 20 that we had pre-ordered. It was okay. The food was quite bland, and the it was far more expensive than what it was worth. My Mother & I have made buffets in the past, and this wasn't as good as the things we make, but a lot more expensive per head. I was very disappointed. The Hotel is out of the way, but has lovely surroundings and lovely views. Right up front, the Spiggie has a world-class chef in Keith Massey who bought this great little Shetland Islands country inn in 2007. We had read good things about the restaurant and made a reservation for when we stopped in the Shetlands on a Holland America cruise from Copenhagen to NYC via Iceland and Greenland. We figured it would be a good lunch stop after we visited Sumburgh Head lighthouse (great) and the Jarlshof archaeological site (also well worth a visit). Good is a vast understatement. We (five of us) had the best scallops we had ever tasted, great local lamb and other fresh seafood. The meal was simply excellent. Keith not only came to our table to explain what was available, but then gave us a rundown of how he could prepare each item. We had a whole bunch of different things and all were great. And the views over Spiggie Loch are breathtaking. And, then there is the pub. A cozy little place with some great craft beers, including a cask-conditioned local IPA that the hophead in our group declared "excellent." Also, a wonderful hard cider on tap. While the Shetlands may be a bit out of the way, the islands are spectacular and the Spiggie is reason enough alone to hop on the ferry or a plane from mainland Scotland and visit for a few days or a week. You won't regret it. Great food and drink, and very welcoming people.

We found this place on our trip to St. Ninians Isle right about lunch time. First we thought the hotel/restaurant was closed, went inside because we saw a light, asked for a table and got one in the bar area. We seemed to be the only guests first, but after our order, more and more guests were popping up. So we were very lucky to get a table without a reservation. The chef personally checked the details of our order and in resonable time we got a delicious meal. We recommend the scallops! The staff was friendly and the interior traditional.

Although my partner and I live in Shetland, we had 4 friends up from Yorkshire on holiday for a few days. We wanted to treat them to a lunch which, hopefully, would leave a lasting impression of fine Shetland food and friendly service, so we selected the Spiggie Hotel.I am pleased to report that it was the right choice with a wide selection of locally sourced starters and main courses. The owner, who was also acting as the chef, even offered extra items he had aquired that morning which were not on the printed menu. Everthing was cooked to perfection and the service from both the waitress and owner could not be faulted.Because there were 6 of us and the bar eating area is rather small, we were allowed to sit in the bay window area of the restaurant with stunning views of Spiggie Loch. Even the sun came out to make the scenery even more impressive but we can't thank the hotel for that bonus.Excellent meal in all aspects and I would never fail to recommend this superb establishment.

Love Shetland and spend plenty of time there, but struggle to find places I actually want to eat out at. Stopped here mainly as had good reviews and was near airport on return trip home from a visit. Stopped for lunch, which was only served in the small bar rather than the slightly larger dining room. The owner/chef (I presume that was who he was!) greeted us nicely and told us about the food, including various seafood specials. The lads serving were polite and friendly. The food was great. Starters were some simply cooked scallops with a lemon butter (lovely). Mains included a moroccan lamb, and a very well cooked filet of flatfish with a caper sauce. Pudding was a shared, rather lovely, apple crumble, which was nicely spiced with cinnamon and clove. Only minor sadness is that would have loved to eat in the restaurant which would have had more of a view, but if you went for dinner, that would be fine.Recommendations: fish cooked very well in both courses. Emphasis seemed to be on cooking well but not too fussily. Also, leave room for pudding. Only tried one, but the others on the menu sounded good too. If you have time to kill on the way too or from the airport, or are in the area, it was a great place to eat.

There are not that many restaurants at the south end of Shetland mainland and this little gem is tucked away, but equally not hard to get to either, a couple of miles down a side road from the main Lerwick-Sumburgh road. The view (on a clear day) is fantastic and we were priviliged from our conservatory seat to watch the sun set over the sea and the isle of Foula on the horizon. The dining room is on the right as you go in and you need to track down a member of the small team (1 x bar, 1 x chef, 2 in restaurant). By the way - do reserve well in advance - they seem to be always full. we got the last table booking 24 hours in advance. the previous and next nights were already booked out. A very generous portion of scallops to start, done in a garlic butter - very tasty although i do prefer them a little more caramelised on the surface. Main course of baked hake in a lemon and caper butter was fantastic - cooked to perfection (and hake is a delicate difficult to cook fish). Pudding - home made pavlova with berries was a delight. Wine unfortunately if ordering by the glass comes in the mini bottles of limited range and quality. It was OK. The Shetland real ale from the bar is well worth a try. Only let down was we had about 3 or 4 goes to get a jug of water and some glasses - but minor complaint. Food great, location great, staff - very pleasant. Nice to see the chef interacting with the customers. Not "fine dining" but excellent local produce cooked and presented well at a very reasonable price.

We were sitting outside the Spiggie Hotel, waiting for it to open at 12 noon. Just after 12 someone came out to put rubbish in the nearby bin and asked if we were waiting for anything. I said that we were waiting for the hotel to open for lunch and he told us that at this time of year (late September) they did not open at lunchtime, because there was so little trade. But before we could say "drat", or some such exclamation, he said, "Come in, we'll open for you".We had freshly cooked haddock, which was great. While we were there a party of 12 turned up followed closely by another group of 4 - so it was worth his while opening after all.The menu is not extensive, but the choice is reasonable and the quality of the food is very good. As for the service - what more can I say?You can choose to eat in the bar (which is small and cosy) or the dining room, from which there are great sea views - on a clear day you can see the island of Foula, one of the most isolated communities in the UK.The guy had intended to spend the afternoon doing office work - I don't think he got to see the office before mid-afternoon. If you want to go there, check the opening times in advance: you might not be as lucky as we were.

Food was very good. Have the crab cakes they were lovely and the chips looked a bit mutated but were fresh and very nice. Now, I know that one isn't supposed to get personal but the man can only be described as a queer fish. Initially Colonel Jobsworth over us parking in the a disabled bay, which we were entitled to do, then just odd about us wanting food so close to 2pm and having to find our drinks. The menus do double duty as place mats, I hope they get a good clean between customers #sticky.

I have visited the hotel for meals over several trips to Shetland and the food is of the highest quality.I always eat in the bar which is cozy even if the decor is a little dated. Who cares when the food is so great! Everything is cooked to order, which is why I had to wait for the beef and mushroom pie. It was well worth it. It was delicious, as were my family's dishes. I couldn't resist the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and it was excellent. However, the raspberry meringue was out of this world. Again everything cooked to order and home made. I have never been anything but completely satisfied with the quality of the food. The chef stopped by after each course to check that everything was satisfactory. He did this for all the tables. A really nice touch and not something that happens anywhere else in the world I have eaten.

This hotel resto was recommended to us and we were not disappointed. The menu is not extensive but is interesting and will satisfy most taste buds. I enjoyed the haggis & black pudding scotch eggs and the local fish of the day, yum yum! The waitress was calm & welcoming and the chef came out to check his customers were happy. There are not a lot of restos to choose from in the area so this place is likely to be busy and booking is advisable.

We were only in this area for a few days, this was the only place we returned to, that says a lot.The chef/owner came out and was more than willing to do his very best to ensure everyone had a good meal. My wife fancied some salmon but not how it was on the menu, so he made a few suggestions and cooked it exactly as requested. We were not the only people to get this service.I would recommend you have a meal here if you can.

Almost missed the hotel as we were driving along the lanes around Loch Spiggie, but glad we didn't. Despite being very busy they went out of their way to fit us in. Had a very nicely cooked meal - hugh portion! Lovely situation, and warm, friendly atmosphere in the bar. Well worth a visit.

We ate on two separate evenings at the Spiggie Hotel, once in the bar, and once in the formal restaurant. On both occasions the food was excellent, and they serve excellent ales, too. However, each time there were several items on the menu that weren't available; not just one or two, but several, which isn't good, and the service was slow and inefficient. We discussed this with other diners, both locals and tourists, and they confirmed they a state of gentle chaos seems to be the norm. As I said, the food was excellent, and the place certainly has character - there was a "soup of the day " shown on a blackboard in the bar, but when I asked for it (on 14th June) I was told "oh, we haven't had that on the menu since March, we just haven't rubbed it off yet".

Holidaying in cottage 1/2 mile away, and visited for 3 evening bar meals. Endorse everything good reported in earlier reviews. Bar staff, chef and owner all very friendly, helpful, efficient and relaxed. Food very good with large main courses, and we could only manage a desert on one occasion. The fish, meat pie and burgers were well prepared and tasted excellent. Our meals at Spiggie made our Shetland visit even more special and we hope to return before too long. Suggest worth booking a bar meal in the evening as only a few tables and some nights lots of customers!

We ate here on our arrival on the island (evening meal) and also for Sunday Lunch , on our last full day. Both days we had a lovely table with a view over the hills/ loch. We do not concur with previous comments about it being expensive. We were pleasantly suprised both times with our final bill, and neither was a bar meal choice. The service we had on both occassions was prompt and helpful and efficient and still with a social element to the service. The range of choice was very good also. So, on the whole our experiences here were sufficient for me to rate it excellent and we would go back.

Visited shetland to stay with friends for the TALL SHIPS race.Lunched here twice and were delighted with the food and the lovely people. Our friends natives of shetland thought the BANNOCKS were the best they had tasted in 20 years. We had lovely soups with bannocks great fish and chips and a thick tasty burger. The sweet of choice for us was a bread and butter pud made with Brioche by an OZZY girl working there simply fabulous. The girl and the pud!!The barman a guy who looked an spoke a bit non local was a super host as were all the people we were served by there.Well worth a visit.

We went to The Spiggie for lunch on our last day on Shetland as we'd found a menu in our hotel. When we arrived it was unclear where we were supposed to go but we were directed into a small bar. We were given a very short lunch time menu. I ordered the burger for £6 and asked if it came with chips. I was told that they would have to be a side order. Ouch. My wife ordered the Tagine for £10. The waiter returned and said they were out of Tagine but the chef had a "curry" instead. The burger was the best burger I've ever had. Once we'd left my wife said "I was a bit gutted, especially when I had a bite of your burger. Mine tasted like a ready meal. Never trust anything just called 'curry'". £10 for "tasted like a ready meal"?Chips as a side order to a £6 burger? It was still the best burger I've ever had though. I'm clicking recommend but only if you have the burger.

Ryanair at least tots up your bill with al his extras before you finaly book and board the flight. Allowing you to decide to or not.Not this Hotel, You will find your bill is far far more than you expect when it arrives. example. Bar meal Think i'll have the Haddock, price looks ok . 6.95 pounds. (thats what it says on the menu)The bill arrives, 10.95. What !!. Well he adds on for the chips 2.0 pounds and another 2.0 pounds for the veg. What he adds on if you book a room I do not know.

While we didn't stay in this hotel, we had two of the best pub meals we had on our entire 2 1/2 weeks in Scotland, at Spiggie's. I will say that we ate in some very nice restaurants during the trip, but this one had to top them all. Spiggies has both a small pub where they serve meals, or a more formal restaurant. We decided to eat in the pub. The first night, we had their lobster, cooked in garlic butter for about 15 GBP - not the cheapest of meals, but reasonably priced for a good sized lobster. Being originally from New England, I am always skeptical of getting lobster anywhere else, but this lobster was absolutely wonderful. And we had a chance to meet the fisherman who caught the lobster which made it even more special. We also had a chance to meet the cook, who came out and spoke with us at length. The second evening we ate there, the cook was even willing to accommodate some of our special requests which was nice, and the pub waiter we spoke with from Glasgow, was very friendly and talkative. We just can't say enough nice things about the meals and service we had. Spiggie is also located in a very picturesque area, with several shetland ponies across the street, who were very photogenic. It’s more of a good cafe than a restaurant and it is also a caravan and motorhome site plus wigwams ( colourful wooden weatherproof huts). It’s at Braewick not Brae which is 15 miles south. It has all the facilities that a caravan/ motorhome site needs. Electric hook up, drive over drains, black water disposals, clean water available, good parking surfaces. Problem is it takes a bit of finding these facilities! Even the pitches take a bit of locating as only a couple are numbered. All the rest have been washed off, blown away etc. The showers are looking old and are difficult to manage. There is a playground and the beach is 5 mins walk but bear in mind this is 1000 km north of London, nearest neighbours are Iceland and Norway so the water is refreshing. But the views are spectacular cliffs of red rock and in the sea a set of rock stacks (the drongs) look like a Viking longship turned to stone. Wonderful to look at at midnight. You might see Foula, 40 plus km away. There are blow holes through the cliffs, take care. The Northmavine musicians play at Hillswickplus informal dancing for a great night out but it’s a 5 minute drive or an hours walk. Great place just needs an update.

Right by the ferry terminal so the ideal place to wait for a crossing. This is popular with workmen and with families. They serve a wide range of food and drinks. From snacks to full meals. From breakfasts to afternoon teas. I enjoyed a coffee and a tray bake. Would have called in twice more during my visit to Yell but it was closed.
