Great meal last Friday. Menu has plenty of varied choices and when the plates arrived the food was excellently presented. Really nice and friendly staff made it a lovely evening.

We were staying in Dounby on holiday nearby and visited The Smithfield Hotel for dinner with family and friends. We loved the food so much that we came back 3 nights during our weeks holiday in July/Aug 2023. Had to book as was very popular. The menu has a great choice and varied. Quality of the food was up there with the best and far outshone another hotel/restaurant nearby! We were served by lovely, friendly, young waiting staff. Some of our family had breakfast there which they said was fantastic and beautifully cooked. I tried to enter the hotel into the Orkney 2024 Tasting Awards but was unable to do so as I think it would be a high contender! Best food for us during our stay in Orkney!

We came here due to the great recommendations we have had. However it wasn't the best experience. The place is somewhat dated, but pleasant enough. Starters were soup, and cheese and chutney, both quite nice. The mains were chicken, and beef in red wine. However the potatoes with the beef were undercooked - easily noticed when the fork doesn't even go half way in. The carrots to were undercooked - not even al dente. My wife had a load of chips so we weren't stuck for veg, but surprisingly the waitress never at any point asked how it was, until she came to take the plates away. We pointed out that we had had ample veg, but did expect something more of an apology than just 'Oh sorry'. A gesture like a free coffee or a small deduction would have been a positive get-out for the restaurant instead of be leaving with a negative vibe. The pudding which we shared was quite nice. The total cost - £51 - would have been a very fair price had the vegetables been cooked properly. With so many good eateries around, i am not sure if we would return.

Rather dated feel to the hotel but food good - soup followed by scallops after a rather cold, damp day. Some staff clearly pretty inexperienced but very pleasant and one shouldn't complain. Pity about the sliced bread with the soup, a roll or some decent bread would have been good.

This was our worst dining experience in the three weeks we have visited Scotland. The server left us sitting without drinks almost the entire time, despite we had ordered them and that the place only had three other tables on the go. The food was possibly the worst we’ve had anywhere. The beef was tough and overcooked, the veggies were bland and the coleslaw tasted like someone had put a few shreds of carrot in a blob of mayonnaise. I can’t believe anyone would recommend this as a place to eat. Try the other hotel restaurant in town. I would only eat here if completely desperate.

This was our main hotel during our stay in Orkney and we made a good choice its location made it perfect for visiting all of the main attractions with it being pretty much in the middle of the island with nowhere on the island being no more than 45 minutes travel. The room we had was compact but not claustrophobic it was warm and comfortable with a nice comfy double bed. We used the hotels restaurant each evening for our main meal and the food was very good and the service was also very good. Breakfast in the morning was served in a conservatory style area at the front of the hotel, breakfasts were always good and filling enough to keep you going most of the day. The hotels staff were very helpful and friendly. I think the hotel would suit most people including some with a level of disability as there are ground floor rooms and while the doors and corridors are a bit narrow you probably could navigate a wheelchair around them.

We popped in for lunch and the place was empty which was nice as we had the cafe porch to ourselves. Service was good but the menu is strange. The orkney steak burrito is NOT a burrito. It is a wrap, served mildly warm but (certainly not hot) with a side salad and crisps. A burrito is a flour or corn tortilla wrapped around beef/chicken, rice, cheese, avocado, sour cream etc. Don’t be fooled by this if you actually want a burrito and not just a steak wrap.

Want to avoid the hassles of Kirkwall and Stromness venues for a good meal? Then this is an excellent choice. Located in the center of Mainland, Dounby is nevertheless very convenient for anyone with their own transport. The hotel/restaurant is right in the center of the small village, with plenty of parking. Was there on a Friday night in July, and the dining room was full (with several walk-ins turned away), so I would still recommend an advanced booking. The meal (I had salmon) was excellent, with generous portions, and reasonably priced. Menu was extensive, and observing other diners, it appeared that everyone was enjoying their meals thoroughly. On the night I was there, it did appear that the wait staff was a bit overwhelmed, but the surroundings (and a few pints) softened the wait for the food, so I really had no complaints, as it arrived hot, fresh, and delicious!

There are two menus to choose from - the restaurant one sounded good however we'd had a fairly substantial lunch visiting Rousay for the day so opted for the simpler one. I was pleased to see a little more choice for non meat eaters on both menus than I've seen elsewhere on Orkney. The veg chilli was pleasingly spicier than the average too. My husband's curry was well textured and tasty also. Pleasant young waiters who were very willing to help with any questions/alternatives. A pie of the day is a feature of the menu: we had a very good chicken and leek pie on our first visit. However, more generally, a certain spark seemed to be missing: service was slow and frankly amateur and there was little atmosphere. In sum, given its reputation, we were somehow slightly disappointed, especially after our second visit. The restaurant is certainly adequate, but it could be so much better.

We stopped at this restaurant whilst doing the craft trail (two good galleries to visit in Dounby). We had a light lunch: fish goujons and crab & rice soup. Both were excellent. The service was impeccable, the staff warm and friendly. Definitely recommended.

Despite the café looking as if it was full to overflowing we decided to see if there was an odd corner for us to lunch, as I had decided to stop there on our way home from Stromness, and save Mark cooking for once. The front part of the café that is visible and pretty, was full but we were in luck as a side room had been opened and despite also filling up fast we found a free table there. The waitress was very helpful and pleasant although obviously under pressure from a sudden influx of customers. I was able to have the crab rice soup despite having to stick to a gluten free diet. Boiling water for my tannin and caffeine free rooibos I carry with me was provided free, and the atmosphere was friendly and the food delicious. Mark decided on sausages and mash, and said it was really special - he'll think twice about ordering it elsewhere now! A very pleasant lunch in jovial company.

Stopped off for lunch having read an advert in the local paper. We found the premises to be functional and uninspiring. Decor anything but cheerful, however we ate a delicious lunch of Scara Brae burger & chips followed by a very tasty sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. Orders are placed at the counter & paid for before eating -self service style. There is only one unisex toilet, it was clean with enough soap and hot water but only one well used, damp and unpleasant towel available.

First visit to The Smithfield and mightily impressed. My partner had the steak burrito which was substantial and very tasty. I had fish and chips, the fish was huge and beautifully cooked very fresh with crisp batter and great chips and a fresh side salad. The service was excellent, nice surroundings and great value. Will definitely go again.

A late lunch we stopped at the hotel and entered the cafe, our first thought was Oh!! won't get anything much here, it did look a little bleak, but we were getting hungry and needed a coffee, What a surprise when our food arrived and beautifully served, freshly made and very enjoyable, the staff were very friendly, I would certainly go back here for a meal, they have an extensive menu for both cafe and restaurant I was supprised that my cousin did manage with his wheelchair in the cafe

This restaurant was surprisingly good. Great local ingredients superbly prepared and presented. The menu was both extensive and interesting. The young waiting team could not have been more helpful. We were staying in the hotel but the restaurant was busy being popular with locals and non-residents alike.

Outside the building is a bit bleak- we expected more from the advert in the tourist magazine. Inside needs a bit of tic to lift it. However; the food was really good. The hot smoked salmon tasted superb. The pork chops in a creamy sauce just lovely. Unfortunately I opted for just a plain filet steak and no sauce- a peppercorn one would have made it perfect. As it was it was done just as I like so -great.All in all- a nice place to have dinner when travelling across the island.

We had a great experience visiting this place for lunch. The front part of the restaurant was full but the staff immediately opened another room to accommodate us and other guests. The food was fabulous and probably the best lunch we had in Orkney. Though the food is generally good it is worth remembering that they don’t offer a fast food style service. You need to order at the counter and the food may take slightly longer to arrive. We all had different items from the menu and everyone in our group enjoyed the lunch and had a completely satisfied meal. This restaurant is part of the Smithfield Hotel in this small village of Dounaby. Plenty of car parking space at the back of the hotel. I remember seeing a Co-op food store on the opposite side. There is a road side gas station (petrol station) nearby and also a small post office which came handy to withdraw some cash. Also noticed a bank and a pharmacy store near the restaurant. If you are driving around the Birsay area then you may want to keep this place in mind for food and other amenities.

We were a group of 3 men who stopped here for a week at the beginning of December. The hotel was very nice, with good rooms, all very clean and nicely fitted out. The staff were all very friendly throughout the hotel, restaurant and bar. They couldn't do enough for us and helped us throughout our stay. We stopped on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. The food was superb at every meal. The breakfast was a hearty full English that set you for the day. Then a choice from the menu in the restaurant at night for the evening meal. All the food was good quality, locally sourced and cook fresh to order. We left feeling like we had made 2 good friends in the owners and the only question was when will we be going back not if.

Amazing restaurant. As someone who is gluten intolerant I dread eating out as I often have very little choice. This restaurant is the exception! I have never been given so many gluten free choices and the food is delicious. The staff too are really helpful and polite. It's the very top of my favourite places to dine.

Twelve of us went to Smithfield Hotel Restaurant for dinner at 7.10PM.After going through the menu, I ordered the smoked fish cake and the roast beef with potatoes. The fish cake was tasty. The roast beef with potatoes was delicious although the vegetables that should come with the roast beef arrived just when I finished eating the roast beef and potatoes.Service was poor as there was only one server taking care of twelve of us sitting at three large tables.

My wife and I visited for a light lunch. The cafe was very busy but staff rearranged tables to accommodate us. We ordered carrot and sweet potato soup: really, really tasty.
