This is now called Mc Cann’s but I gotta tell ya folks it’s quite poor quality. First of all the prices once again are London prices. Why? This place is well out of town and I doubt it can justify its prices either on location or quality. The cod was thin and the batter just alright, but the chips were a disaster. In the same portion some were perfectly cooked yet some were still raw in the middle and none were great flavour. How can this happen as I really don’t know. I really find it inexplicable just how terribly bad our local fish & chip shops are yet they charge top whack. I mean just 20 mile away I can get first class cod fish & chips, a soft drink and I can sit-in and have the food brought to me, and all for a lower price. So I’m giving up on our local fish & chip shops as they are annoyingly poor quality and I’ll continue to visit the Pit Stop in the centre of Kilkeel. What an awful shame that I have to.

The chippy is an arm of the same named fish distributor. The fish is ok but the frying leaves a lot to be desired sometimes. I ordered a single plaice this time. Came battered like a cod. Some how It would have been better in bread crumbs. Was a wee bit greasy and the good handful of chips were soggy and under cooked. The plaice was fresh ok. But a bit more care and attention in cooking would have made it superb. But it was ok for Newry.

The fresh smoked Cod is the Bee’s Knees 🐝 it’s freshly battered and the nicest I’ve tasted. Like most good fish shops i always think you should eat in freshly served. It’s interior is typical chipper nothing special but staff friendly and food is fab and portions are generous 👍

I found myself in Newry lunchtime Friday and having read about local award wining fish & chips I took the opportunity to try the Silverfin. We all can have off or bad days, this was theirs. I ordered COD and a Pastie. The little place looked clean and well staffed with 4 behind counter and one only other customer at lunchtime! I waited 15 mins for my order cooked from fresh! The Pastor tasted like no other I've ate in my sixty years and the small fish (£4.95) was defiantly not COD! It was grey dry and tasted strong, not White and creamy rich tasting! The few chips served were cold and wooden! Bad tasting and badly cooked fish, as bad as I've ever had. I won't risk Silverfin again! Next time your in Belfast, treat yourself, try John Longs traditional Chippy off Durham St and learn what great fish and chips should be!

Bought a small bag of chips here. Turned out to be a huge bag. Excellent chips, crisp and tasty and of course traditional. Slightly marred by someone outside calling me a "prick"!

We've been here a number of Tim, and will call in the future. It's over a mile from our house, and well worth the journey. Cod, plaice, smoked cod, can't be beaten anywhere near. But do stay away from the burgers.

I had been before a couple of times and this time was an improved offering. I ordered a wild haddock on its own. The place was very busy as it was a Saturday night. They have now a few tables and chairs for sit in. Took quite as while for the fish to come. It was priced £4 .25 which is fairish. The young man serving was under pressure from telephone orders and persons coming in and forgot to give me my change. I went to the car to eat it. First impressions were that it was a decent size served on a bed of a few chips. The batter had become soggy very quickly. The chips were hard small squares and not very good. The haddock inside was super fresh and very good. It was hard to judge the batter but it seemed improved from last visited. There was a pool of vinegar in the box. I had not asked for vinegar. I'm a regular at Cafe Fish in Belfast and the Galley in Lisburn and Armagh. This place could learn from them. But to be fair it has improved,is very busy,is very fresh. The young man serving was quite friendly. One big big minus is there is no bins outside to put in empty wrappings.I had to go into the shop to ask for it to be disposed off behind counter. But I still would recommend. it.

my wife and I stopped at this restaurant last week to get fish bites and chips and was VERY DISAPPIONTED at the size of the portions they gave us, the fish bites came in a burger box, and had five in it, the fish bites was smaller than your fingers more batter than fish, the chips was a lot smaller than other chip shops would give, it cost us £13.60 , and had to wait 20 minutes to be cooked, still hungry after eating it, the owner should go to Lisburn or Belfast to the chip shops called SIMPLY FISH AND CHIPS and they would see value for money, sorry wont be back.

Stopped here for lunch as the owner catches his own fish then sells it in the shop and cafe. The cafe is bright, clean and nicely decorated. The menu consists of the usual chip shop food plus fresh cod, haddock and scampi. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Meal for four cost £27 including water. The shop today had fresh cod, haddock, mussels, prawns and scallops. Well worth a visit.

Came home starving and after contemplating what to get for a while we went for silverfin, which is located 0.5 miles from our home. 1hr 40mins later, at 10pm, we decided to ring to see how much longer our order was going to take. The woman on the phone said they attempted to deliver our food twice and we didnt answer the door, that it was our fault, which wasnt true as we live in a flat and the alarm rings loudly in each room when someone calls- the phone was passed to a man who said the delivery man tried to deliver twice and that he finished his shift and left at 9:30- he then hung up the phone. We attempted to call back 4 times however the line was engaged Might i also add we provided a contact number on the just eat website when placing the order, instead of contacting us when unable to deliver our food, they decided just not to inform us and leave us waiting on an order that wasnt going to arrive I also would like to add the response posted on a previous complaint from the manager i find to be incredibly rude and unprofessional , and from reading it i dont believe Silverfin appreciate their customers whatsoever - Sorry silverfin but due to your disgraceful service- we shant be back.

This is our third time here over a long period and we thought we'd try it again. Sorry folks but this is a memo to myself not to return again. We got two cod and chips which came in at over £15 - London prices - and I may as well have burned my money as this was just poor. The portion sizes are decent but the chips 🍟 are pretty grim and the fish 🐟 batter even worse. What I can't understand here is that they have perfect ingredients and I've no doubt they've invested huge sums to set this place up, but I got home within 10 minutes and the batter was soggy and the chips not much better. So the batter problem hasn't been overcome. There's a chippy in Rostrevor and they serve up crispy fish & great chips and they are superb at £5. It is two stars one for the great 🥔 potatoes and one for the fresh cod but at these stonking prices the food should really be flawless from scratch to plate. It's pretty far from it sadly.

Today I had a nice battered cod and chips quite nicer than I had before a few months ago. The fish was quite small but we have to expect different sizes of fish. HOWEVER the price was unreal.... £7.15 for a cod a chip If I was to feed the family it would be close to £40! It's nice for a treat every now and again but not on an weekly basis. The staff were two young fellas quite pleasant while the main cook sat in the waiting area talking to someone. It was very quiet for 6pm on a Friday evening such a pity as Newry could do with keeping this shop maybe everyone like me can only afford it every now and then?

My husband had cod and chips, i had the haddock. Both fish were delicious. The chips were inconsistent. Some were delicious but the thinner chips were very tough and dry and I would not recommend going here for chips alone. There are a few seats looking outwards and we were able to eat our dinner straight away. It is great to know the providence of the food. I was hoping to try the squid which was not available which i accept as presumably the offerings depend on the catch. I thought there might be fish cakes or alternative side orders. We recently ate at Quinlan's in Kilgorlin who has the same selling point - ready access to fresh fish. This place has potential to be as good as Quinlan's with a little imagination - the owners should pay them a visit! I will try Silverfin again as I hope it will continue to improve as I am all for supporting local businesses using local food produce. Finger crossed it continues to grow and improve as it has great potential.

On a drive through from Dublin to Belfast we stopped off at silverfin for food - and what a pleasant surprise not only do they serve the common cod and haddock and chips but also many other seafoods including monkfish, scallops, hake, squid.. you name it! I was spiolt for choice. After a long debate I orderd the hake, it was melt in your mouth perfect. My man went for the scampi and the kids went for the usual burgers and everyone was more than happy. this is not just a traditional fish and chip takeaway, but a seafood heaven.

While I found this place away ahead of the so-called competition in the area and the is cooked to order with choices including cod, haddock, smoked haddock, scampi, monk and turbot they stillhaven't been able to resolve the cooking method so it still leaves the and too oily. chips should be crisp outside and fluffy soft in the cooked centre. They are not. Fish should have a crisp, light batter but again no. The food here is priced at the high end accordingly the quality of the food must be top notch. It's just not happening. I've been quite a few times in the hope that it would improve. I've even dropped a few hints when in. The last time I went in there were four staff behind the counter and while they are a pleasant bunch of folk they were more interested in joking among themselves than paying attention to the job in hand. By the time I got home with my £18 worth of fish & chips, which was less than ten minutes, the chips were lukewarm and the fish batter was limp and unappetising. I always ensure not to get vinegar on the food. I can do that at home so theres no excuse for soggy fish and barely warm chips. I was cross. Sadly that's me done. Back to making my own because above all else we don't have a decent fish & chip shop in our area.

At last we now have a darn good fish & chip shop on the outskirts of the city. Fab, fab, fab. We've been crying out for one for years. It's way streets ahead of the so-called competition. I've been in half a dozen or more times in the last few weeks since I realised it was open. The fish is cooked to order. There are great fish choices; cod, haddock, smoked haddock, scampi, monk, hake (a fish I dislike immensely) I've even had turbot. The chips are chunky too. It's priced the food at the high end and the food portions are fairly good too. That's the good news but there is one problem here each time I've bought and I can't figure what the cause is. The fish batter is wonderfully thin (but not enough salt) but it absorbs too much oil and the chips are not as crispy and oil free as they should be. So even though it only takes me a short while to drive home the fish batter is already softening. Maybe it's the oil, maybe it's the oil temperature, maybe it's the batter, I wish I knew. This won't stop me going back here as it's the best about by far but I hope they can correct this. No doubt someone out there knows the solution here.

Been here a few times. Fresh fish. Haddock, cod, halibut, hake, monk fish, sqid all available. Chicken and burgers too. Downside - not enough time to allow food to drain oil off so greasy. Portion sizes smallish. Prices average. The quality and freshness make it worth a visit.

Ate in here a couple of weeks during a weeks visit. Staff were friendly and attentive, the place was clean and the food was ready in an acceptable time. 2 of our party both said the haddock was the nicest fish they had had in years and the burgers were also delicious .
