Absolutely speechless!! Never experienced anything like this in our life before. Walked in at 6.45pm to try to eat at Shepherd and Dog. Very stressed owner called Grant. He said he had no menus to give out. He took our table number and said he would bring them out to us. We waited and we waited and then went to enquire what was happening. Again he said he had no menus to give out even though there were some sitting on the bar. After nearly an hour waiting for a menu we gave up. We went in and explained to the barmaid we were giving up and going. She was apologetic but he wasn't. He just couldn't care less. So unless you have several hours to waste waiting we suggest AVOiD AVOID at all costs. An unforgettable experience of bad service!

Disappointed. Read previous reviews. Food ok at best. It seems strange that they can't serve small plates as starters, all came at once. Portion size reasonable. Just.....not good enough. Won't be back in afraid.

Great little find with great grub ! Bangers/sausages where best !!

My Wife and I had a lovely Wednesday evening meal at this quintessential English pub with excellent food. My Wife ordered Gluten Free Fish and Chips which were fresh piping hot and very tasty, I ordered the Classic Burger with Onion rings. When the Onion rings arrived there was also a portion of Gluten Free Onion Rings, these little touches make all the difference, both meals were excellent, the waiting staff were polite and extremely friendly with nothing too much trouble. If you are in the area this is a must.

Stayed in the area and was recommended the Shepherd & Dog for an evening meal. I had already checked out the place earlier in the day with a swift Cider ( this one counts as sustenance as I was walking) and decided to return for my evening meal. The staff were very pleasant and friendly explaining that there was a large party booked in later that evening, so I went straight for the menu to avoid the kitchen crush. The menu offered a good choice and included vegetarian options as well. I chose a classic prawn cocktail to start followed by scampi and chips for my main. All washed down with a pint or two of cider. The food was delicious and the cider hit the spot. A great village pub which appears to cater well for locals and visitors in equal measures , not an easy task. The weather was hot so I chose a table outside next to a gentleman with two beautiful VERY well behaved dogs. ( apart from the Labrador which is obviously a master thief given his superb heist of a bag of salt and vinegar crisps from the bar ) Maybe the gent was a Shepherd ! Very entertaining. I would definitely recommend the Shepherd and Dog Inn at Hollesley.

Six months since we last visited. Sunday lunch was today very good, but the restaurant still seems soulless. Dusty outdated plastic foliage on the wall. It looks like it’s had its day. We came in on a HOT Sunday with friends. Started off by ordering drinks. We ordered a Coke and Malibu & coke and the coke was from a half empty bottle that wasn’t stored in the fridge so had to have a warm drink on a 30’C day. The fish and chips was absolutely drenching in oil and the onion rings were covered in it too leaving a pool of oil in the dish. We were the only customers for food in so no excuse for it being busy or to have warm drinks. Wouldn’t recommend.

We wanted some lunch after doing a long walk and found the Dog & Shepherd on Google, so off we drove there, when we got there it looked like it needed a good cleaning form the outside, but we were very pleasantly surprised. We ordered some snacks and they were absolutely delicious, I am a bog onion ring fan, and get tired of ordering them only to be given ones that are clearly from a packet, not at Dog & Shepherd, they were home made and amazingly tasty, in fact all the food was. The staff were very polite and gave excellent service, very friendly too. It was a lovely lunch and we will go back, recommend highly.

We often over the years have had many meals here as we stay at the nearby site. We went for Sunday lunch on our arrival of a ten day stay. My char grilled chicken was lovely, but husband had the roast beef. He couldn’t cut the beef as it was so tough, and the Yorkshire was uneatable the beef was a cheap cut! dining area has no atmosphere, and I think I mentioned on my last visit they need to get rid of the dusty plants and spruce the room up. It wouldn’t take much. There was as I presume the manager who just kept walking about doing absolutely nothing. It was a little off putting as the server was kept very very busy as was the barman. He didn’t speak to any one, a nice welcome means a lot! It is a shame as we eat out the entire stay and would have gone back but not until there is an improvement.

It was a busy Friday night but we got a table in the corner which was great to keep the woofers from being too over friendly with the other customers. The staff were fabulously attentive - table service for drinks and food. The food was good quality and generous portions at a reasonable price. Fresh fish and chips with home-made tartare sauce followed by a fantastically gooey chocolate muffin with ice cream middle. So good we came back for a coffee and snack lunch on Saturday. Sausage & onion sandwich and deep-fried chilli cheese with salsa. Good food, excellent friendly service and treats for the dogs - we will definitely return.

Popped in for a snack, the food was nice, the staff mostly very nice, but what really gets me is the high cost of a thimble full of coffee, and now no opportunity for a lower cost refill. I Suggest the management go to M&S to see what a proper cup of coffee looks like, because you won’t find one here.
