It’s with a heavy heart that I write this review as the staff at the restaurant are really nice and I feel bad for them, but the food is not anywhere near the standard that anyone would expect in an Indian restaurant and certainly not what I’m use to, I’d go as far to say that the chef must have been off that night because it would be impossible for them not to know how bad it was I ordered a Chicken Tikka Madras and it was awful.. dry hard chunks of tikka chicken which appeared to have been added to a heavily tomato based sauce with lots of red pepper thrown in and stirred, it was a shame because the front of house were brilliant.. I didn’t complain as I never do were food is concerned, just paid .. tipped the waiter and we left. This is a completely unbiased review and I only write it to help the restaurant improve.. I was basically served with what tasted like a tin of tomato soup with dry lumps of tikka chicken heavily dosed with cayenne pepper, heated thru and stirred. We went to a different Indian restaurant the next night and had possibly the best meal I’ve had in long time .. I’m just sorry I hadn’t gone there first.. live and learn

So I killed one of my bus list items today in eating solo, well happy with myself. Great food , very tender meat , chef to be commended. I eat out a lot and am lucky enough to eat in some quality places. This gaff needs a bit of a smarten up on the decor front but really needs smartening up front of house. Chap was efficient but not remotely engaging. You can have average food but a great night if the staff engage and make your evening. I tried several times during and at the end to get some interaction with the FOH chap but it wasn’t to be , shame. I’ll stick to the takeaways and me and my dog can make each other smile.

Fantastic...... Absolutely love the food. Staff are more than welcoming, polite and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. And its not expensive......so win win !!

Really poor service. Waited 90 minutes for food and had to leave in the end as we didn't receive our main course. No one was receiving their food. Think the chef is on his own trying to cook with 1 pan, as everyone was moaning. We sat next to 3 guys who were laughing as they had shared their 2 starters of samosas for over 1 hour. I ended up eating the mint dip.... When I said we were leaving, the owner/manager came out and said 10 more minutes (even though we had been informed it will only be another 10 minutes 3 times already) and the food will be out. Still charged us for the drink we had. Not worth the visit, really gone down hill. The toilets are usually a good indicator how clean a restaurant is. Go in there before you order your food and judge for yourself...you will be out as quick as you were in. Shame.

Terrible experience. Popadoms were chewy. Staff were receiving telephone complaints in earshot of us and lying to them about being too busy to talk. Beer was flat. Needs renovating. Food was average.

Went on the recommendation of friends. We certainly were not disappointed. Service was excellent... Nice friendly guys. The food was excellent and well priced. We've already been back for a repeat visit on a Wednesday... such good value. Only comment would be don't expect food to arrive too quickly. Thanks very much

I had a Shobu Baha,it had no taste whatsoever it consisted of boiled potatoes and long stringy onion.My husband had KING PRAWN JAIPUR ,which had no prawns in it just scrag ends of chicken ,plus bombay aloo ,which again was tasteless boiled spuds ,Nan bread was cold stodgy dough .It is xmas day and my tummy is churning feel sick and not happy .

Heaven forbid if there is more then one person at a table and you order more than a main. Two hours to serve six people on a Wednesday evening is a long time. And make sure you bring a hydration pack as it is hotter than the surface of the sun in there. The bathroom was clearly last renovated in 1965 too so could do with a lick of paint, amongst other things… Food was nice to be fair, but slow to come to the table and so hot in there. If not the latter two, would be a higher rating.

We live within 2 miles of Baldock, Letchworth and Hitchin and Shapla White is without a doubt, the best curry house in the area. We have been eating there most weeks for a good few years now and the food and service is faultless. Can’t comment on the take away delivery as we always collect. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options of pretty much the whole menu and they will tweak dishes if asked. Love the staff who are consistently professional, polite and friendly. Wonderful!!

Ordered a takeaway over the phone. Was told it would be 40-50 minutes, which we expected on a Saturday evening. Went to collect, actually an hour after ordering so was ready to apologise for being a bit late. However, it was another 35 minutes before it was ready. No apology from Shapla White, no offer or a discount, not even a smile! Got it home to find most of the food was barely warm and an entire dish missing. Called back after eating. It took over 90 minutes for them to answer and the response was astonishing. "It's Saturday, we get busy, this is what happens". Really rude and they couldn't have given less of a c**p. The food here is good but the service for takeaway is terrible. I understand that places get busy but at least be honest about it. Tell me it will be over 90 minutes and I can decide if I want to wait. And if you mess up and charge me for food that you then forget to give me, at the very minimum pretend to give me a sincere apology and refund it. Like I say, food is good. However, based on the fact that there are other places in the area that are equally as good but give a better service, I don't think I'll be ordering takeaway from here again.

Was staying at Letchworth Hall for one night and we asked Richard at reception for best Indian restaurant in the area. He recommended Shapla White and we were not disappointed. The meal was a very reasonable price. The curry and passanda were full of flavour and not too hot just the way we like them. The starters and desserts were very good.

First time eating in Shapla since COVID - great food as always. We use shapla for takeaways and used to eat in a lot there as well - and will be back again now that things are getting back to normal. Really lucky to have this great restaurant and take away so close.

Shapla is our favourite Indian restaurant to go to. My partner has been coming here for years and it’s always amazing. Garlic chicken chilli mosalla extra hot is highly recommended. Look forward to it every time

11 of us had a table booked for Saturday evening and must agree with many others that the service was appallingly slow. This is the first Indian restaurant I've been to where you had to chase the staff for more drinks! Onion Bhaji starter was very bland, however the Chicken Salsila main was excellent but overall the evening was spoilt by the slow service between courses.Would not agree that staff are rude, but they did stand around despite the number of empty glasses on the table, perhaps we just caught them on a bad night but will probably try other Indian restaurants in Letchworth before returning to the Shapla.

I've been going to this restaurant for years and have always enjoyed the ambience, friendly staff and, of course above all the excellent food.. How people can review saying the staff are rude and ignorant is beyond me.I have seen the staff deal with inevitable difficult customer and they do it very professionally. This place is definitely worth a visit.

Este es un restaurante no recomendado como el personal de ignorarlo una vez que asiento. Éramos un grupo de 4 y después 45 minutos preguntamos si podíamos tener nuestra entrada. Sólo fuimos cuesta abajo desde entonces 30 minutos más para nuestro principal aunque pedimos 5 / 6 veces. Lo peor es el restaurante no estaba lleno. Me and a group of friends paid a visit to Shapla's tonight, we waited for over an hour and 20 minutes for our starters, which for me turned out to be dry and over cooked chicken, when our mains arrived my sauce had separated (I still are my food due to being so hungry), several items from our order had been forgotten, my garlic naan bread really wasn't garlic flavoured at all and seemed to be half uncooked. Drinks were quite expensive and service was lacking - a couple of times we were ignored when trying to get the attention of waiters, for a specials night where you would typically expect more customers, it seems not enough staff were on hand, food was shoddy and over cooked and waiting times were far too long! Once we have finished all meals, staff were literally hovering around waiting to be able to clear our plates and get the bill to us. Disappointing food and service. At least the company was good!

Pequeño y tranquilo restaurante indio en Letchworth. Servicios es razonable pero muy lento a pesar de sólo 7 de nosotros cuando nos venga. La comida estaba de buen nivel, pero no lo suficientemente caliente a pesar del menú dijo muy caliente. Mi favorito curry llevar. Nunca he comido pero he escuchado cosas buenas. Siempre conseguir porciones decentes tamaño, entrega nunca es tarde y siempre unos extras se acercaron en FOC. Consejo: si te estás comiendo un viernes o sábado temprano para entrega la Orden a una hora determinada para evitar decepciones. A veces hay que esperar mucho y acaban siendo 9. 30 antes de la comida llega. Esto está bien si no te importa cuando comes pero no esperar la entrega dentro de 1 hora en horas pico.

Nuestro grupo de seis fuimos al Shapla blanco en Letchworth última noche para los restaurantes 'gourmet' que ofrece la noche, que es un precio muy razonable en £10.95 por 4 campos y un café. We have spent £100's here over the years but since change of ownership we have seen a decline. Yesterday the service was slow, a medium to hot curry spiceless and sauces over salty. Feedback was met with disinterest. We will not be back.

Whilst the restaurant may appear quiet there is always a steady stream of take away orders being received. So long as you don't mind adding another 10 mins to the quoted time for collection you will always get a good meal here

We went here quite late at night and the staff were really friendly and helpful, the menu is quite standard, certainly not modern, but if you like old school restaurants and want good service at a reasonable price then you won't go far wrong.

Pedimos llevar en la víspera de Año Nuevo y nos informaron que sería 1 hora y 20 minutos. Nos alegramos de esperar y comprendió que tomarse un poco de tiempo en una noche concurrida. Sin embargo, nuestra comida tardó más de tres horas en llegar, que me pareció inaceptable, especialmente sin una disculpa o descuento. No pudimos conseguir a través del teléfono para averiguar cuando la comida llegaría/cancelar la orden ya que estaba constantemente ocupados. La comida era decepcionante un montón de no mucha carne de salsa. No comer allí o llevar orden nuevo

Reservamos temprano para la víspera del Año Nuevo para evitar cualquier punta nos sentamos en la parte trasera cerca de los inodoros "en caso de que se llenaba" ! Pedí una pinta de bitter y me dijeron "no hacen bitter" una cena conciudadanos más tarde la misma pregunta y una parecía. Nos quedamos muy estrecho (4 cenas) y tuvimos que hacer malabarismos platos y vasos. El servicio era lento dando prioridad a llevar.La comida era muy cara al menos un 30% más de lo que yo he pagado por noche similar en otros restaurantes indios. He oído buenas críticas de otras personas pero mis experiencias siempre parece ser pobre. Puede que tenga mejor suerte que yo ni me puede estar esperando mucho!

Called in on spec for a curry Bank Holiday Monday. Staff were very helpful. I asked for mine to be lower fat (less ghee) which they were happy to do. Both meals were lovely. Would go again.

I have visited Shapla twice, each time on a Friday evening. The choices for a curry in Letchworth and Baldock are a little restricted, especially if you check scores-on-the-doors first. Shapla on both occasions was OK, but nothing to write home about. First time one of the dishes was so salty (king prawn) it was not edible and we left it. Second time food was ok / average, but nothing special, standard curry house fair. We had standard stuff eg popaddoms, onion bajis all round, chicken tikka masala, king prawn dhansak and lamb methi with rice. However, the service was slow and yet the place was only half full. It was as though the waiters (and there are lots of them) had no interest in us. We literally had to call out and flag one down after about 30 mins to place our order. On leaving the restaurant they didn't even come over to say bye. It is neither cheap nor expensive (20 quid a head without alcohol). Shapla is ok / average.

We visited the restaurant for our Xmas dinner. We went for the ser meal which meant set starter and choice of main and selection of sides. All in all an excellent evening. Great food and excellent service, despite it being very busy! I took on the challenge of the Mr Naga - (very hot on the menu) - surprisingly tasty and yum! I will certainly be ordering my takeaways from here too from now on !

A very warm welcome as you walk through the door was the beginning of our great evening out at Shapla white. our drinks order came soon after we ordered and food was not far behind. we plan to go back over Christmas as we enjoyed the high standard of food served to us.

It's always a bit difficult reviewing Indian restaurants as their chefs often change and I do believe you get a better service if the staff know you as a regular. I don't use any restaurant enough to be considered a regular but Shapla White is generally my preferred choice for "Indian" food in Letchworth. I've always been reasonably happy with their meals and service but they are recently under new management and in my opinion the standard has definitely gone up a notch or two. I've had a sit down and a take-away in recent weeks and both were superb meals. The food seems fresher and more visually appealing and they are decent portions packed with the main ingredient and not bulked out with sauce. The price has gone up a little and the wait is longer but I am quite happy to accept both for a better quality meal. As with virtually every restaurant of this type the toilets are something of an afterthought but clean nonetheless.

I live across the road from this place so thought I should try it out as new to the area. As expected busy on a Saturday night but was able to get a table without booking, staff was polite and courteous and attentive. It did take a little while to order our main course but it wasn't a problem as we had poppadums and drinks and then it suddenly dawned on me why rush? The food was lovely and enough of it, reasonably priced and no issues with the bill (I.e. Taking ages to get it to the table like some places) and would be happy to go back again.

My Wife myself and 2 friends went for the Banquet, and at £10.95 per head the food was delicious, there was plenty of it I had the Lamb Biriany which was considered to choices. Meat, and Rice but the portion was enormous and I had it with a Vindaloo Sauce Big chunks of very tender and Tasty Lamb we had 4 different starters which we shared I had a couple of chapatisand the others had Nan and my wife had puris, along with that we had different pickles, all in all the food was great the service was great and the atmosphere was great, and a good time was had by all, and all for under a fiver ha ha well not quite but it wasn't expensive for the 4 of us it came to around £60 with drinks.I would recommend Shapla White any time.

After being a loyal customer and spending £80 every week for a long time I was upset to find that the meal I picked up for collection was completely wrong but even more upset when I was told that he has no driver and that I would have to drive back from ashwell to pick up the correct meal . Real shame with a little customer service this could of been rectified! Very disappointed

As a regular user of Shapla White we have never had a duff meal in the time we have been using it. The staff are friendly and attentive (not overly so though!) although on occasions the service can be a bit slow (hence 4 not 5 stars) but we don't mind this as we usually go with friends and I am quite happy to chill out with a couple of cobras! They are always very obliging if you ask for something not on the menu.

Wednesday night is gourmet night. Starter, Main Course, Side Dish, Rice or Naan and coffee - all for £10.95 - very good value! Always lovely food and the staff are all very charming and the service is good. Haven't had a bad meal or bad experience there...... always a good curry assured, See you soon :-)

This for us is by far the best Indian in Letchworth! We order a takeaway from here at least once a week. My husband usually orders a dish not on the menu and they are always happy to oblige and they always tweak my dishes to suit my taste. The manager/owner is a lovely man that always makes time for a chat as are the rest of the staff. I would recommend that you book a table if going in for a meal on a Wednesday as it gets very busy as they have a brilliant value gourmet night. The food always tastes lovely.

7 of us visited here at the beginning of February. We love the food but the service was exceptionally slow even though the restaurant wasn't full. Also have found that because they serve cola etc from bottles it is usually flat. Overall definitely worth a visit just be prepared for a long wait and return your drink if its flat!!

Used Shapla for a girlie night in, delivery time was great, food was amazing and service very friendly, I have also eaten in the restaurant before and again, they didn't disappoint, food and service very good and had a lovely evening, would definitely recommend.

Went to gourmet night on Wednesday and had a great meal. Often use the take away service as well and it is always good. Very friendly service and always worth a visit.

Have booked this restaurant many times and the food and service never disappoints. This time we thought we would try the Wednesday evening special deal of £9.99 for a starter, main course and side dish. The food was fantastic and of the same high standard you get at weekends. Fantastic value for money and the shamee kebab was a joy to the taste buds as was the pathia main course which was the best I have ever tasted. Cant wait to book this restaurant again in the near future.

2nd delivery in a row they have taken over an hour. Won't be using again ever and will tell everyone how crap the service is. And the food is about the same as the delivery time, crap. Should of cooked myself.

Visited this restaurant which used to be one of my favourites.Now very poor food and service.Curry was tasteless and luke warm.Drink prices quite high

6th August my friend and I went for my Birthday what can I say, lovely, as always, been here many times over the years and it never fails ! were both veggies and you'll never be disappointed with anything you order, !!P.S try a Garlic naan bread :)

Shapla is an excellent restaurant. The food is always superb and the staff are very friendly and polite. Banquet night on Wednesdays is excellent value. Their take away service is really good.
