A carvery is available for Sunday lunch which can be either two or three course. There is a choice of several roast meats and accompanied by a selection of vegetables. Not outstanding but nevertheless a wholesome meal. As with most food on Orkney it is not cheap around 50 pounds for 4 and two courses. Drinks available at the friendly bar . First course is fairly limited with a choice of soup or smoked salmon or tuna salad. Down side no apple sauce with the roast pork.

Located in the historic Stromness Hotel, this place occupied the second floor of the hotel with views of the harbor. The vibe was one of former luxury that had grown more casual over time. The furniture showed some wear and tear, but the place was scrupulously clean. Our server was a young woman who did a great job without being omnipresent. I had the steak (a filet) medium rare. The beef comes from the butcher next door, as did the accompanying vegetables (steamed carrots and cauliflower). The steak was super tender and flavorful, although they prepared it medium well, or it would have been even more enjoyable. I also had local scallops as a starter, which were delicious. My wife had a vegetarian, butternut squash lasagna which she found only adequate. My fillet was twenty-six pounds (cost not weight) which seemed too expensive to not be perfect. It could have been if more care had been taken to not over cook. There was no room for pudding. Might give them another try as the choice of restaurants in Stromness is limited, and their local food suppliers seem promising.

We were a big group of 12 and to make things easier for the restaurant, we preordered everything a week in advance. It was buzzing so everything was a little slow. Had the chickpea and lentil bites for starters, which I thought was alright. Was really looking forward to having some seafood in Orkney so I ordered the lobster tail and scallops - turned out to be disgustingly horrible. The scallops were so tough on the outside, lobster tail was so tiny and I still can’t believe I had to pay £22.50 for that dish. My friends went diving for the day so they were starving but most of them left food behind - proves how horrible the meal was... Will never go back again..

The Stromness Hotel looks a bit imposing and dour from the outside, but upstairs the Scapa Flow restaurant was lively and bright. The food was reasonable, with a fair selection, including a curry which I chose. It was not as good as the average Indian restaurant, but fine for a pub. I thought I was getting on in years when policeman started to look young, but this restaurant seemed to be mostly staffed by children. I guess there must be an excellent school or college on the Island as they were all pleasant, polite and hardworking, though a bit of education about types of beer might be in order. We were pleased to be squeezed in and as we are here all week, there is a good chance we will return.

We had a lovely dinner in the 1st floor dining room. It's one of the very few places in the UK that doesn't have music in the background and we absolutely loved this - finally a restaurant where you can just enjoy your food and have a conversation. The food was tasty and well presented - most of us had excellent seafood and the chicken curry was also a success. There's a good selection of ales as well. The decor is straight from an Agatha Christie novel - a bit faded and could quite probably use some refurbishment but we enjoyed it a lot and expected Miss Marple to walk through the doors during dessert. If you're looking for a trendy and loud place for dinner, this won't be the right place but it's a very good choice for good food and confortable conversation.

Booked a table for a large group and ordered food as requested 24 hours in advance to assist kitchen staff. But this wasn't really enough as they struggled to deliver the goods... Food was served over a long time period with veg and potatoes arriving stone cold direct from the kitchen. One person being offered a complimentary desert as they only received their main after the rest of us had finished. I had a 1/2 of lobster, which was small cold and mushy. Maybe just unlucky in the Stromness Hotel that night, but the fact remains, the most expensive meal during my trip and the least enjoyable. .

Oh, I see.....this is the restaurant, sorryWe didn't stay here, but ate two evenings out of three cos the first meal was so great. This is a pub restaurant of the best kind: informal enough to be relaxing, but food good enough for a proper feast. The people at our B&B recommended this place; they said there had been some reported issues with the service earlier in the year, but this is clearly not an issue now: yes, one did get the feeling that some of the waiting staff are probably on their school holidays, but they were sweet, friendly, helpful, and didn't f u c k anything up, so all good as far as we're concerned. And the steaks! You know how some people can take a perfectly great piece of meat and basically ruin it? The chef here does the exact opposite! He clearly knows how to do a great steak (so much so that I ended up having one twice....it was just so yum! even the chips were great! go for the peppercorn sauce). My partner doesn't eat meat, but she had loads of yummy veg and fish things, all of which were also really good.

We booked a table at the restaurant to be in location for the Jazz Festival. The young waiting staff tried very hard but had no form of support from the more mature waitress who spent the night socializing with her friends and being less than helpful on the occasions she did attend to paying customers such as being too busy with her friends to take our payment which we left at the desk. I found a metal bag tie in my vegetables, the young waitress took this back to the kitchen after apologizing on behalf of the kitchen staff. Kind of put me off my dinner.

It's not easy to find a place where I can easily find food options, as I'm a vegetarian and newby gluten-free. During my research pre-trip I found out that the Scapa Flow restaurant could be a good choice, so my friends and I headed there last night. As we arrived we were informed that it was their last night open (not sure if for the holidays or thee entire winter season?), so there was no à la carte menu but a buffet. While the starters seemed to offer enough options for me, there wasn't much I could have eaten as main course. However, the cook came to rescue and offered to prepare something with whatever he could find in the kitchen. So we sat and started dinner. After the starters he came back from the kitchen with a lovely dish made of scrambled veggies in goat cheese and a side dish of mushrooms and chestnuts. Delicious! He was soooo accommodating and caring I can't thank him enough. It's great to still be able to enjoy a yummy dinner despite my food restrictions. The rest of the staff was also very nice and helpful, and the rest of my party enjoyed their food a lot as well.

I don't know what the negative reviewers, are talking about, seriously.I live here, on Orkney, and can truthfully say, that the Stormness Hotel restaurant, is my favourite place to eat.The building doesn't have a "faded" air. It's an old building, which is kept well decorated, but without ruining the charater of the place. It's light, and airy, with big windows overlooking the harbour. Lovely. I really like my food, and I can honestly say, I've never had a disappointing meal there. The food is just always, reliably, excellent. And.....they will accomodate any dietry requirements, such as dairy intolerance, if they possibly can.The staff are well trianed and are attentive, but without being creepy, as can be the case in some restaurants. They are simply helpful, pleasant, and....attentive - they watch out, all the time, for when folk are reaidy for the next part of their meal.Seriously, I was very surprised at what some of the reviewers have written. I don't usually go in for this kind of thing, writing stuff on Internet sites, but, in this case, I felt that I had to speak up for the Stromness Hotel restaurant, for the food, for the place, and for the staff. I'm eating there, tomorrow night, and again on Sunday night, and it's where we take anyone who is here visiting - and we have NEVER been disappointed.Enough - I've had my say.Go there yourself, have a meal. The restaurant is on the first floor of this historic building but there is a lift if the two flights of stairs are daunting for anyone. The menu was comprehensive. I chose the roast lamb with gravy, mint sauce, boiled potatoes and a selection of vegetables. My other half chose the lamb curry. The roast lamb was served on a plate on it's own with veg in accompanying dishes. It looked good enough but there was lots of slices and I thought I would never manage to eat it all. The meat was beautifully tender and well cooked. This was local lamb and hardly any fat at all. Really delicious meal and I cleared the plates as did my partner who was also very impressed with the lamb curry. For two of us, the meals came to about £25. The portions were very generous - I had haddock (two large pieces), which was so fresh it still tasted of the sea, and I had the choice of batter or breadcrumbs. I also had the choice of chips or potatoes - and opted for chips. We had dinner in the stromness hotel last night. The food was delicious, fresh and well presented. The staff were friendly and efficient. Would highly recommend stopping off for a good feed. The hotel looks dated, but well worth a visit for the lovely meal we had

We ate twice in the restaurant and enjoyed both meals but would particularly recommend the curry. On the evening we were there it was a beef curry and looked very simple but was very tasty.

Wonderful evening, all 4 of us enjoyed our meal selection. The seafood was a taste sensation, there was also plenty to choose from for special diets. Staff were very attentive and quick.

Ate here twice recently and the meals were hearty and hot. They do cater for vegetarians. Service has to be prompted but the staff are all fine people who smile and work hard. 'Faded grandeur' describes the building. There are good views from the restaurant. Central location. There is a fairly grotty public bar on the ground floor. The worst feature of the restaurant was the men's toilets which can be left to one's imagination so, moving swiftly on... There isn't a great choice in Stromness. Sadly Julia's is not open at night and the Ferry Inn's food was not so good. This is good value and an experience rather than anything else.

A bit of a shame here. We were a group of 5 and despite asking if we could have the table in the window, the waiter put us in the furthest corner from it.The food wasn't great, and there were some very weird concoctions going on. One of our group ordered lamb, but we were astounded when it arrived to see it smothered in cheese! Cook please note - lamb and cheese do not go together. The meal was also expensive considering it's just simple (slightly odd) bar food. We ate at a lovely restaurant in Kirkwall the night before, and the bill tonight was only a little less than there. Not worth it, especially for lamb and cheese!

Restaurant is located on first floor overlooking the harbour - try to get a window table to maximise the view.We chose seafood chowder and crab and prawns to start with fish dishes for the mains. Each course was very good indeed. Thought the menu was slightly odd in so far as it had a number of Indian Style dishes which did not really sit that well with the rest of the menu. Desserts were excellent - in particular the cheese cake.Service was quite efficient but the staff could be more friendly and came across as mechanical. I appreciate that most people are passing trade and there are no real regulars dining but given waiting staff are in the service industry I would have expected some interaction / conversation / engagement. The toilets could be checked more frequently. The paper towel basket was full so used towels were strewn over the floor. Not a good impression.

Spacious dining room on first floor overlooking Stromness harbour. Friendly service, excellent food. My Indian meal had all the right flavours, rarely such good Indian tastes outside a pure-Indian restaurant!

Popped in on a Sunday night around 6pm for meal and got a table without booking, although it soon filled up. Food was fine, but the local ales were rather warm - probably caused by the good weather outside.

We ate twice at the Stromness hotel, the first time because it was about all we could find at night and the second because the crab/prawn salad was so delicious! This place is an old traditional hotel and it is often rather full of tour groups but they willingly opened up a bar for us to eat in when there wasn't a table in the dining room. The food we had was all good but the crab and prawn salad and the scallops were to die for! My ONLY question is why would you smother delicious local lamb with a blanket of cheese? I scraped it off and the rest was very tasty.

We ate here as a family on the 16th July. Starters were excellent, particularly liked the squid and crab/prawn tower. The beef curry was really nice, so compliments to the chef. The beers were top notch as well. Scapa Special in my opinion is the best pint in Orkney! The only thing we noticed was the large group of ramblers who arrived shortly after us. A few were wearing tracksuits and other walking gear. One particular woman even took her shoes off and had them parked next to her seat. Being a restaurant surely there should be some dress code, even if it is casual.Overall the Stromness Hotel restaurant is excellent, great service, food and views over harbour.

We arrived in the hotel at 5.50 pm - the visit didn't get off to a very good start when a member of staff told us we caouldn't order food until 6pm, a somewhat childish attitude bearing in mind that it was only a few minutes away. She did however come and bring a menu at 5.55 and took our order at 5.59. She was reasonably knowledgable about what contained glutin or alcohol and willingly went to find out about those dishes where she didn't know. The food was served without undue delay and was quite tasty.

A large group of twelve walkers had a meal here, expecting merely pub grub......but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The service was good and the upstairs restaurant had wonderful harbour views. The chicken and haggis with mushroom sauce was delicious. We booked in advance, as were such a large group. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Stomness.

We didn't book a table but, although it was really busy, we managed to get in. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the service was very good. On the whole the food was very good and value for money. Only disappointment, my scallops were over-cooked, but they were very apologetic and we did get free after-dinner drinks.

After discovering that basically Stromness is closed until April, our plan to eat out or have takeaway in our holiday rental apartment was somewhat scuppered! As pretty much the only restaurant open in the evening while we were there, we decided to have a go. Unusual layout at everything is upstairs and is it very dated, with nothing matching! Considering we paid £50 for 3 courses for 2 people with one drink each, it was not cheap! The food was nice but basically a bar meal so very overpriced for what it was and it all reminded us a bit of Fawlty Towers... Considering Stromness has pretty much no takeaway food available ( we got excited seeing someone with a pizza box - not bought in Stomness though!) and there a quite a few rental properties, this place could make a bomb by selling their very passable curries from their little bar next door as takeaway. Just a thought....

Popped in for an evening meal. 2 x very tasty burgers and some good beer later we left very happy. It isn't the grandest of places, but it does deliver good food at a fair price. Would definitely return if we were staying longer.
