San Benedetto’s in Teignbridge

We were staying at the Northgate house hotel, great for my dietry requirements too. A little walk in the grounds we came across this amazing pizzeria. Lovely friendly and helpful staff, the best ever thin and crispy pizza best I have ever had in over 30 years. Plenty of topping, but being dairy free too now, had a little sprinkle of the vegan/dairy free cheese. Would def recommend, and need to book in advance. Hubby and my nephews pizza were good too, lovely starters. If visiting family again, would def go back.

First time visiting San Benedetto's restaurant despite living locally. The restaurant is on the grounds of Buckfast Abbey, next to a very photogenic working water wheel. I'm not a massive pizza fan as a rule, but we came for my friends' birthday. I have to say this was the best pizza I've ever eaten. I chose the Capriccioso, the base was thin and crispy, cooked to perfection in my opinion. The ratio of toppings to base was perfectly balanced. Very generously sized pizzas, and two of us were given doggy bags as it was too good to leave behind. We were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable host and all 6 of us were more than happy with the service, the ambiance, and most importantly, the food. One member of our party is vegan, and she was not disappointed (as is so often the case) by the options available to her. I was also pleasantly surprised by the IPA beer, made by the monks on the premises at Buckfast Abbey. And I was even given the choice of room temperature or chilled, which is very rare but most welcome. There's a good selection of local and Italian beers and wines, including alcohol free choices. The menu was very well priced and I'll certainly be back again for another visit, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend San Benedetto's to my family and friends. Many Thanks.

Am staying for the weekend in the Northgate Hotel as I’m on a Cookery Course at the Ashburton Cookery School. After a long day of cooking I thought I would go to San Benedetto for a pizza. I arrived at 18.45 pm and asked for a table for one. I was told they were very busy so I offered to take the pizza away and eat it back at the Hotel. The Waiter. conferred with a blonde haired lady, who I presume was a Manager. She turned to me and offered me a small table to eat at which I said was fine. She then said the food would take a while — I replied that’s fine, I’m here on my own with nothing to do all evening, I’m happy to wait. She then said Why don’t you eat up at the Hotel? At that point I walked out.i have never been made to feel so unwelcome. Shame on you. I’m now back in my hotel room hungry and upset.

Just another wannabe Italian place. Unfortunately this place is very over priced and it’s not much to write home about. Staff could have been more attentive and cheerful. Atmosphere was weird, almost formal like you weren’t supposed to be there, VIPS only kind of vibe. Pretty setting for a restaurant but only really for special occasions for that price. Trying to hard to be authentic

Absolutely amazing place. Went with family and friends to celebrate birthday . So friendly and helpful service. Delicious pizza and in sensible price. Kids, parents and grandparents - all enjoyed it!

We live locally & this has been on our list to visit since it opened. Finally made it last night & were not disappointed. A lovely friendly welcome & soon shown to our table - near a radiator, lovely - although the restaurant was beautifully warm. Although there is a good list of starters, we had come for pizzas & wanted to enjoy those. We chose a simple side of coleslaw. Both pizzas arrived piping hot, with a pot of chilli oil to drip atop, if wished. We did & it was excellent. I couldn't manage all of mine & was given a foil-lined oven bag for re-heating at home. Great idea & better than a box. Whilst we were both full, we might have gone for a dessert had the choices been a little more exciting than gelatos & affogato, maybe a tiramisu or tart of the day......?? However, it's a pizzeria & the pizzas were superb. We shall be back.

We stopped at the North gate house hotel, also within the Abbey grounds, and like this establishment owned by the Abbey. It’s a fabulous location, 5 minutes from the Abbey and the Northgate Hotel, beautifully restored and renovated, with the water mill still working and almost surrounded by a moat it seems. Staff we’re extremely friendly and helpful, plenty of seating inside and out, all very authentic looking, extremely cosy on a autumn evening with all the light on. Our food arrived very promptly, was absolutely delicious, both had a different pizza and couldn’t fault it. Without doubt one of the best pizza restaurants I’ve used outside of Italy.

Wow! What a setting! Wow so authentic inside! The best pizzas ever. Friendly quick service. Everything Italian from the menu to the tablecloths to the Lambretta parked up inside. No dogs allowed was a bonus! Definitely be returning.

Great ambience, friendly and quick service, immaculate in terms of cleanliness, pizza was excellent quality. I will definitely visit again.

Visited for the first time after a couple of recommendations and we weren’t disappointed Quite simply a stunning location, situated within the grounds of Buckfast Abbey, the restaurant is situated within a converted Water Mill, complete with working water wheel! With ample parking surrounding the mill, the restaurant is approached over a bridge across the mill pond The interior is bright and modern, with an authentic Italian twist, the tables are well spaced out Having only recently opened in February 2023, the menu currently only offers hand made pizzas with a great selection of starters and sides The welcome was warm, the service excellent and the pizzas were exceptional! Possibly the best pizzas we have tasted in the UK It would be great to see this new venture extend the range of Italian food offerings to include pasta’s and other delicacies, though I appreciate a larger kitchen would be required A separate bar would also be a great addition if space allows We’ll done guys, ourselves and our guests were absolutely delighted we have you a try, will definitely return very soon!

Rating on our experience of being on holiday with a dog, whilst the abbey grounds are dog friendly unfortunately this restaurant isn’t. We were informed that we could sit outside and take a chance on the weather. We enjoyed a couple of Korev lagers and shared a pizza with mussels and prawns and squid with wedges. The food was delicious and served hot and our only gripe was that the restaurant was empty and we sat outside at a picnic table. The restaurant was spacious inside and could have easily allocated a few dog friendly tables. That said they didn’t so as much as we enjoyed the food would not be returning.

Vicky and Tony looked after us extremely well. They were friendly and attentive. The food was outstanding. A thoroughly enjoyable evening

Lovely setting, not a great deal of choice on the menu but what we had was very tasty. The wedges were a little too salty but you do get a bowl full. Would return again.

Nice setting and nice food but the 5 stars was earned by our waiter Rob who was friendly, attentive and personable.

Picked up a couple of take away Pizzas. Absolutely fabulous really great authentic Italian food. Will certainly return and recommend to all.

Early signs are positive for this new pizza place in Buckfast. Antipasti and pizzas were very good! Good value for money too!
