Roots Indian Restaurant & Bar in Richmond upon Thames

Absolutely wonderful experience at Roots. It was our first visit after reading a recommendation, and arriving at 5:30pm on a Saturday was perfect for a relaxed start with cocktails. We were greeted with such a warm welcome and loved the whole evening. The restaurant filled up quickly after 6pm but we never felt rushed. The staff were so friendly & attentive, without being overbearing. We began with poppadoms and delicious cocktails— the accompanying sauces were amazing. My starters was the vegetable samosa chaat, which was just outstanding. My boyfriend had the venison kebab, which he thoroughly enjoyed. For mains, we had the lamb saag and the sea bass & prawn curry, with sides of mushroom/spinach saag & black lentil dahl - each dish was packed with outstanding, distinct flavours. Interior and presentation of the dishes is gorgeous, and it's just a lovely atmosphere. The chefs and front of house staff clearly know how to provide a wonderful standard of food and service. We're really looking forward to our next visit to try some of the other dishes. Highly recommend! ☺️🌟

Roots is a great name for a restaurant that explores innovative culinary ideas and this Awadhi (from Lucknow, India) themed restaurant is at the top of my favourites list of restaurants in London. I have been to several Awadhi cuisine restaurants in and around London and I can assure all foodies that the menu on offer is absolutely mouthwatering and heavenly. For starters I ordered a beautiful mojito and Kentish Town Lamb Chops which setup the excitement for my main course of Mutton Biryani! It is difficult to put in words the intense satisfaction I had while dining here and we were extremely well looked after by our knowledgeable host! As Arnold said: ‘I will be back!’.

We went to Roots last night as a walk in. We turned up around 5:45 but didn’t have a reservation. Asked if there was an available table and was told there was. Had a lovely and delicious meal with very friendly waiters. They asked if we wanted dessert and gave us the menu to have a look. Shortly after a very abrupt and rude manager came over to tell us that we need to leave because the people who actually Booked ‘our table’ was already here then handed us the bill. We were never told when they needed the table back by. Such a shame to have a lovely dinner abruptly ended by such a rude manager.

This is my second time here, I came for the roast which was phenomenal and had the goat biryani when I came the first time which was honestly so good. I can’t recommend this place enough. I only wish I had the roast lamb which you must order 48 hours in advance but it looked insane

The reviews of this restaurant are universally positive, and with good reason... the food is fabulous and the staff are wonderful, welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. We went twice last week. First time I had the slow cooked melt-in-the-mouth smokey lamb shoulder (a traditional curry style dish) and for the second I had the chicken biryani (beautifully moist and deftly spiced, served in a dish with a pastry top). I also tried a dessert with some amazing beetroot concoction which somehow tasted sweet and almost rice-puddingy, served with ginger ice cream. First class Indian food. Highly, highly recommended. And thanks to the staff for squeezing us in without a booking on our second visit.

Had a delicious Sunday meal and ordered way too much but was able to take it all home. Goat biryani, Lamb leg, Chicken korma and a range of starters. I thoroughly recommend the Lamb leg, Chicken 65 starter, Dahi Puri Chat and the raita.

Had the Indian roast dinner which was superb. Flavours and variety of food was incredible with each part of the 'roast' worthy of praise. Was a good amount of food and a genuine shame we couldn't finish the portions as was so good.

Went in on a quiet Saturday lunchtime when it could have felt a bit awkward but our lovely server made us feel so welcome. Totally spoiled our little boy and made him a whole feast of dishes to try. We had a selection of classic curries and all the food was fresh and delicious and excellent value too. Will definitely be going back.

I was staying in a local hotel so looking for somewhere to eat I stopped outside roots to read the menu when a man was collecting his takeaway he suggested if I’d never been in to eat then I must he said it was the best curry he’d had in a long time. I’m so glad I took his advice the staff were attentive and made me feel at ease despite being on my own. The food was authentic and flavoursome I will definitely be returning when I’m back here on business.

We had a great meal at Roots on Friday. The dishes are all ambitious and successful with great use of quality fresh spices. For example the aromatic biryani where the rice steams in an oven pot beneath a lovely crunchy lid something like a crispy paratha. Side dishes such as Dahl Makhani and chicken tikka skewers from the Tandoor also impressed. Will definitely come again. There is an excellent lunch 2-course menu which makes weekdays very reasonable to eat but the whole menu is well worth paying the full price for. Follow up review. Just game back for a second meal. Just as amazing. Trio of chicken starter very tasty and Dal Makhani of course. The biryani is their signature dish so we had it again but Sunday roast menu also looks great. Try this restaurant and you won’t be disappointed.

Delicious food!!!The service was fantastic as it should be in all restaurants.The staff were very polite! Even though there was no kids menu, they immediately made for our baby the nicest chicken!

What a jem of a place, we had been staying at a near by hotel and looking on line for something to eat. I kept going back to Roots for dinner and so glad we did. The food was out of this world so delicious, the staff couldn’t do enough for us. The staff were very knowledgeable about, the menu was just about right not over complicated. Cocktails great as well I had a Margarita made with tamarin, ginger ,lime and tequila. Atmosphere was perfect as well.

Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Been a couple of times, once for Christmas Day and not only is the food exceptional but the staff are excellent, going above & beyond for customers!

Roots is an absolute gem, amazing food and service that never disappoints. I have gone here several times including for the Sunday roast, and every time they exceed their own high standards. We are lucky to have this place in Teddington, they know how to make people feel welcome and the food is knockout. Try the chicken 65.

Came here to celebrate a birthday, the host and all the staff were extremely gracious and welcoming. The food was exceptional and very reasonably priced considering the quality. We had 2 starters, drinks and mains for about £26 per person (including service charge), I'll definitely be coming back here soon!

What sets this restaurant apart is the service.

Visited Roots to celebrate my husband's birthday, and when the food is 100/100, the celebration becomes a memory to remember. This place is a complete gastronomic experience. Their Tandoor starters are succulent, smokey, and perfectly spiced. Loved Dahi puri, it's one of the Street Foods of Mumbai, and it did open up our taste buds. Also, their curries are amazingly flavoured and are very well balanced on spice level as my son enjoyed the food too. We also enjoyed the pista kulfi and the beetroot halwa in deserts, which is their chef's special recipe. Aman was an amazing host, and he looked after all the guests on the floor with attention to detail along with his food suggestions and polite gesture. This will be the restaurant for us to come back again for Indian cuisines.

I have really enjoyed going time and time again to this gem of an Indian restaurant since discovering it a few months ago. Food: What a menu. Not over complicated or too much. Just enough choice to inspire you to challenge your taste buds. And it also doesn’t stand still. The chefs are continuously removing and adding dishes that have inspired them. And their chef’s specials are amazing. The food is served beautifully but the taste is even more of a surprise. Full of depth and authenticity with a hint of a twist that you aren’t expecting. From starters to dessert you will experience a wonderful taste sensation. And I guarantee you’ll be back for more. Service: Aman (I hope I have spelt his name correctly) is a fabulous host and his attention to detail and pride of the restaurants offering and reputation is second to none. All his staff follow his lead and are equally attentive but not over powering. Atmosphere: when you walk in you will be delighted by the decor. It isn’t your run of the mill Indian Restaurant, it has taste, class, quirk and elegance all rolled into one. With small zones that give a different feel. The nod to its Indian roots in the life size mural on the wall gives a feeling of its heritage. Overall: This has become my favourite Indian restaurant within a 10 mile radius. Food prices are about average, although drinks are a little on the high side, however, they are located right in the heart of Teddington. Give it a go you won’t be disappointed.

Lunch at Roots is a great experience. The restaurant has great decor, food is freshly made and flavourful. Highly recommend their signature dish palak patta chaat which was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is relaxed. Service provided to us by Selio was absolutely first class. Will certainly be going back.

Brilliant. I'm fussy with Indian food. I can't stand the typical Korma or sweet butter chicken. This place is REAL INDIAN food. The staff are excellent, service is on point and food is truly amazing. I'm genuinely impressed. Lovely place!!!!!

I happened across roots tandoori this evening, little did I know what treat was in store!! Absolutely wonderful careful service from the front of house staff and the matridi, with the most amazing food I have tasted in quite a long while. The menu is not expensive but tightly focused around what they do well and I'm told it is changed frequently, I cannot believe my visit this evening was a lucky one-off when everything came to a beautiful crewscendo, more that a damp Tuesday night in Teddington in October was this restaurant operating at standard, but my what an excellent standard this is I will be back I fully recommend this place and I will bring some more people with me and enthus about it. Thank you for most memorable meal. PS: I fully recommend the goat biryani

Roots is one of my favourite places to eat, authentic and high end dining at the forefront with a beautiful restaurant and atmosphere, fantastic mouth watering cuisine and amazing service. A massive congratulations to Aman and the team at Roots. Keep up the great work and see you soon.

I’ve tried the Saag Lamb a few times now and it always delivers - Very tender spring lamb inside slightly smoky saag alongside hot, slightly crispy naan makes for a wonderful eating experience. Staff are attentive, they take time to make you feel comfortable and explain the dishes/give suggestions on what to order. We will become regulars here.

When we were glad that we made a booking as the restaurant was pretty busy when we arrived. The food was excellent overall and the service excellent. I really enjoyed the venison kebab starter, Hyderabad goat biryani, nan for the table, Then I had Matka kulfi for dessert that I ordered. Everyone on my table really enjoyed the food and overall experience.

What an amazing place to dine. The food, decor and service is top notch. Great menu and concept by Chef Mayur. Attention to detail by the service team lead superbly by Aman is commendable. Me and my family had a wonderful experience at Roots. Well done Guys!!!

The team at Roots hosted a gathering of 21 of us in the spacious basement area. The room was beautifully prepared, the food was exceptional and the service impeccable. We have met in an Indian restaurant every year since 2005 and the group was unanimous that the food served at Roots was by some distance the finest we have experienced.

We celebrated a family birthday on Saturday night, the food was delicious and the service was incredible. We will definitely be going back!! Highly recommend

When we arrived the place was packed but we were seated after just a few minutes since I had booked. The service was super quick with the food arriving soon after we had ordered. Very tasty and a cut above the usual. I would highly recommend.

Food is good, we are pleased to find this place locally. Will come back. The lamb smoking curry is excellent. Most of other dishes are great too. However, frog legs were overcooked and batter too thick. I guess this is a new trial dish.

Great food, great service and great atmosphere. It's rare to find restaurants who gets it right from A to Z but they do! I went there for my birthday with my husband and I couldn't recommend it more! Part of a pre wedding celebration, so a fairly large group, they served a set menu. There was plenty of choice, including chicken, lamb and vegetable choices, this was served along the table in beautiful dishes.

I’ve just came back from a meal here. Outstanding. I enjoy spicy food, but not just hot for the sake of it. (My wife is Indian, so I’m used to it having flavour too, not just hot) This place delivers, but do ask for what you want. These guys know what they are doing. Great service. Great food. Amazing service, great flavourful food and a beautiful decorative restaurant

Brilliant restaurant with delicious food and wonderful service. We’ve been a few times now and took my vegan friend last night. They were so attentive to her and went above and beyond to ensure she enjoyed her meal. The free mango sorbet with 3 spoons was a lovely end to our meal!

I visited my friend in Teddington, he took me his favourite Indian restaurant Roots in main mkt area, I found it very beautiful ambiance, related to Indian culture and Rajasthani vibrant colours.... staff was very attentive and welcome us to given comfortable table , we had Popadum and chutneys to start ....I was very impressed with chutney quality special berries one and sweet potato, also had daal Makhani was authentic , saag also excellent, Garlic naan was perfect, my friend had few grills , all were amazing presented and delicious in taste and I loved their unique dessert tandoori pineapple. Price was very responsible in that elite mkt ,best Indian restaurant in Teddington Recommended to all Indian food lovers

Hands down the best Indian restaurant, perhaps the best restaurant of any cuisine, in Teddington. The food is delicious and the menu very thoughtfully put together. It is extremely well-priced for the quality. Aman and his team do a fantastic job to deliver impeccable service in a manner that always remains down to earth and welcoming. A truly fantastic restaurant.

It’s very rare that I get to say WOWWWW for an Indian restaurant in London. Roots makes the culinary journey special. The food not only is appetising to the eyes but every bite is delicious. It’s a highly recommended place to visit. I’m looking forward to my next many more visits

Hidden gem in Teddington. The food was delicious, the service was fantastic - Aman was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The hand painted mural is stunning. The cocktails are very, very good. Can’t wait to go back, would recommend to anyone 10/10!

5 star food, great atmosphere and excellent service. Service wasn't overbearing and the staff were there for you at just the right times. Very happy to accommodate our dog as well! Would recommend the Samosa Chat for starter!

This is a very distinctive restaurant. It's friendly and laid back but faultlessly attentive and efficient. Everything says 'we are determined to be a great place to eat'. The menu is smaller than the choice: after a mix of shared starters, all delicious, I was headed for rogon ghost but asked the waiter to make it hot. He suggested Kohlpuri ghost instead. Never heard of it, and not on the menu, but he was the expert... The result was a dish of huge flavour, just glorious, that included subtle flavours I've never met in 50 years of eating and cooking Indian food. Wow. Roots is probably in the top three Indian restaurants I have ever been to, and eye-openingly good. At that level there is no equal first. I almost dare not go on about it, because it's already crowded. and busy with locals who know what they have got. More success will only make it harder to book a table, and I'd love to go there again.

We loved Roots so much, we went twice whilst on our trip to the area. Very creative menu propelling Indian food to new heights of taste sensations. Must try truffle naan and the exceptional Boozy Gullab Jamon! It was my birthday and One, I won’t forget! Keep up the good work, excited to visit Again 🙌🏽

Twice we had dinner over here . On both the occasions the food, ambience and service was fantastic. Vegetarian as well as non Vegetarian dishes are absolutely delicious.

The hospitality is commendable, and thanks to the team and Mr.Aman, who ensured that our Special day was made even more special.
