Since the restaurant has been taken over it is much improved. The food is good and is now realistic competition takeaway option for Khushi.

I used to find it delicious and my favourite Chinese ever! However, when I next went to visit, I discovered that they had a new chef. As a result, my food wasn’t very nice and such a shame.

Don’t bother. It hasn’t got any better , if not maybe even worse!! The place should close and quickly, they can’t be making any money at all!

Ordered on the phone but should have checked reviews prior. The food slopped out on our plates, everything looked recooked 3 times - pork balls looked like dried golf balls and the meat smelling like old books...I ventured into the sweet and sour sauce and it was like acidic vinegar!! I had one mouthful. I returned to the venue and they kindly refunded all my money and were polite and gracious.

We spent £30 and to begin with it seemed ok smelt good but it was the worst chinese we have ever had in our lives. Half was in-edible and the crispy beef was barely edible absolutely shocking never again

Had a takeaway and probably the last from here.Can normally eat most things, but this was disgusting Fried rice looked like it been cooked twice the chips looked like they been cooked the day before and warmed up they was brown and crunchy, the sweet&sour chicken balls tasted of perfume our some strange test. Only thing we all eat was the prawn crackers. So basically would of been better having a bag of crisp for dinner.

We decided to try this place, upon ordering over the phone the pleasant chap advised it would take 15 mins before ready for collection...alarm bells were ringing...fresh food does not take 15 mins to prepare. The oil the food was cooked in tasted old, the rice was dark brown and a bit stale, the bean curd soft, lifeless and bone dry (obviously microwaved). We even had a bag of chips what were soft and soggy. My advice, don't waste your money, I'd feel guilty writing such a negative review but the owners obviously don't give a damn about their customers when they are happy to charge people for such awful food.

After the change of management this restaurant has gone downhill in a huge way . It is obvious they are freezing the meals and microwaving them when ordered . I had pork cantonese style and it was dry as old boots the rice was the same . When we complained there was no offer of a refund just an half hearted apology. Never ever again !

We ordered for valentines day, order was taken promptly and given a slot to pick up.Disappointed the order was wrong, and quality wasn't as good as other times we have eaten in or had a takeaway.I phoned to see what had happened and was met with an ok, and not offered anything to resolve it.Sadly wont be ordering there again.

Don’t go the food look like even reheated and was burnt tasted disgusting 🤮 worst Chinese ever even my kids didn’t eat it and they normally wipe their plates clean

This was without doubt the worst meal of the year and bearing in mind it is the end of December that says something. In fairness there are good Chinese restaurants and there are bad Chinese restaurants and then there is this. The food was barely edible. My teenage son, who has the ability to eat almost anything met his match with this. Poor fatty ingredients cooked badly would be a good summary. Every dish was smothered in sauce that whilst being lurid in colour was essentially tasteless. I am genuinely struggling to find something positive to say and the best I can say is that there was lots of food. Would suit a family who have had their taste buds removed and who have arteries they wish to have clogged up but for everyone else - avoid!

This restaurant doesn’t have competent staff to take orders. After repeating our order twice we found missing meals when taking home. The restaurant was unwilling to do any about it and couldn’t care less after taking our money. Very poor. Steer well clear.

Mientras paramos en Lechlade reservamos para comer en el río Dale. como alternativa a una comida inglesa. Fue una gran sorpresa cuando aparecimos y descubrimos que solo había cuatro mesas de cuatro en lo que solo puedo explicar como la habitación delantera de la cabaña de alguien. Habiendo dicho eso, era básico pero cómodo y la recepción fue muy amable. los precios estaban en Parr con el restaurante chino promedio y la comida era muy buena. aunque ocupado con comida para llevar, la comida estaba preparada y llegó a la mesa en un buen momento y muy caliente.Un pequeño gran lugar para visitar.

Había escuchado malas críticas, pero siempre me gusta darle una oportunidad a un lugar, ¡pero una vez fue suficiente! Llegué de regreso a casa y ordené algunas cosas estándar que no pensé que podrían salir mal. Stopped by for a carry out and found a good varied menu to choose from and settled for a chicken chow mein and shrimp and fried rice .Service took 10 mins and we were on our way .the chow mein was really good but the fried rice had been overdone.We would try it again if we are in the area but would avoid the fried rice

Once a month we will use this restaurant/take away it is very reasonably priced and friendly service. The food does not disappoint either.We have not eaten in yet as take away preferred.

We used to use this takeaway many years ago and haven’t for a while so decided to give it a try again. Staff friendly and got a free bottle of beer! But the food was really disappointing. It didn’t smell right and had no flavour. Could be good no idea what’s going on

We were staying nearby and decided to visit this beautiful little Chinese takeaway , the food was amazing , the lady/ owner was so friendly and the food arrived so quickly . Great price . And we even got a free dish as she was so lovely.Will definitely be going back 5*****.

Vinimos aquí para nuestra cena de aniversario, nos preocupaba que no pudiéramos tener una mesa con solo cuatro mesas y no reservamos, pero no deberíamos habernos preocupado ya que éramos los únicos allí. Recibimos una cordial bienvenida del propietario, quien nos dijo que se retiraría ese fin de semana y que su chef se haría cargo y esperamos que la comida siga siendo tan buena. Ella no tenía preocupaciones, teníamos el menú fijo para dos y la comida era excelente, una de las mejores comidas chinas que tenía. Recomiendo encarecidamente ir a River Vale si en la zona.

Cuando visitamos Lechlade no podemos resistirnos a pedir una comida para llevar o reservar una mesa. Es el restaurante chino "Simply the Best". La comida es deliciosa. Nunca nos ha decepcionado ninguna de las comidas que hemos elegido.Y no podemos culpar a la señora de la casa que es un anfitrión excepcional, muy amable y acogedor. Recientemente visitamos River Vale y nos sorprendió tanto que después de 4 meses, el anfitrión aún se acordaba de nosotros y fue muy acogedor. Me gustaría desearles a los encantadores dueños y su personal "Un feliz año nuevo chino".

Visité por primera vez hoy. Somos locales y solo a 5 millas de distancia. Zona de estar pequeña con solo 4 mesas, muy parecida a visitar amigos en casa. La pareja que lo maneja es tan encantadora. Muy hablador y acogedor. Teníamos el menú fijo para 2 y más a los 19. 99 cada uno. Sopa, entrante mixto y 3 platos principales y arroz frito. Servido encantador y caliente y tan fresco como podría ser. Sinceramente, la mejor comida china que he probado en mi vida. Muy recomendado y volveremos para más muy pronto.

Absolutely delicious meal. The best and freshest Spring roll I've ever eaten. Duck was amazing as well as was the Hong Kong style sweet and sour chicken. Would definitely recommend using. Going back again, in fact - tonight!

Three and a half years after reviewing " River Vale " we three came back ( just as we said we would ) there is nothing more to say than its equally as good and well worth the 5* rating we gave it then

We have been getting our Chinese takeaways from here for years on and off we hadn’t been for well over a year so was really looking forward to it as it’s usually lovely but we were really disappointed- the curry sauce smelt like burnt plastic and had lots of burnt black bits in the egg fried rice was a horrible brown colour and had no taste and the sweet and sour chicken balls looked and tasted like they had been warmed up from the day before! The duck chow mien was well over cooked, dry and tasteless we will never be going again!

I love the Chinese food here. Beef chow mein delicious and the crispy duck is always excellent.The staff are so friendly.

We eat here as a family as we like to get out, it’s a tiny restaurant but they make sure the service is perfect. Food is yummy, but is a small town place so don’t expect gourmet.

Very friendly staff had quite a good conversation about where she was from and about myself. The food was served really fast, the rice was really good, the chicken balls were ok. I am planning another visit next week and will try something more authentic would definitely recommend a visit.

This restaurant is housed in a very old building that was a family home about three hundred years ago. There is a fireplace in the main restaurant area that a whole hog could comfortably turn on a spit!!It was very quiet when we were there (early evening) and we enjoyed our meals. My Szechuan chicken was particularly good. The service was quick and attentive and we left nothing behind!!

This place seemed like a godsend late one night when everything was closed in Lechlade. The lady on the front desk was lovely and chatty, the food seemed promising. But it really was awful. We got back to our boat with our food and found most of it revolting. The egg-fried rice was a sludgy brown colour and tasteless, the noodles tasteless etc... We ate a little to stave off our hunger and binned the rest. Really surprised this has such a suspicously high rating. Never again.

Went into the restaurant by chance, unfortunately we wish we had passed by. I have never eaten a chinese wtih such thick gloopey msg heavy sauce, most dishes were fairly plain and tasteless. The rice instead of being fluffy was greasy and was left. I would say we left 60% of all dishes. Even the coke my wife had nerver had a choice of being served with ice or lemon, will not be going back. Very poor quality.

Unfortunately I don't have anything positive to say about this place the food is appalling , they don't offer any dish that isn't loaded with MSG and salt , the food is gloopy and totally tasteless

Unfortunately the standard of food from this takeaway is terrible. I have had 3 meals from here and the first one was ok, the second was awful and I gave them another chance as the staff are lovely but that was awful to. The fried food was all over cooked except the battered prawns where the batter was grey? Even the fried rice was horrible.... Sorry for the poor review but it is such a lot of money per dish for such poorly cooked food I can not say anything else. On a positive the prawn crackers were alright....

I've ordered takeaway from River Vale before and while not the quickest, had found the food to be great. When I called yesterday, I was told they were busy and it'd be an hour before my order would be ready.Fair enough, right up until I arrived an hour later to collect. I was initially told there'd be a further 10 minute wait. Again, fair enough; it was a busy night. 10 minutes came and went - still no order.It took in total just over 90 minutes to get my order and while sat there, more and more people turned up, advising they'd been told it would be an hour. Clearly if you've 7 people all arriving at the same time to pick up meals that haven't been started yet, there's a time management issue.Arriving home, I found part of my order was missing. I called the takeaway to be told they'd forgot to pack it.I had to drive back into Lechlade to collect this. When I arrived back, probably 15 minutes after I'd left, the same people were there still waiting on their takeaways. In fact, it was a customer who told me where the missing part of my order was.Don't get me wrong. The food was good, the hot and sour soup especially so. I'd started the review with a poor rating and brought it up to an average on to reflect the quality of the food.I appreciate it's a family run concern, having a very busy night and they wouldn't want to turn business away. Nonetheless, I would have liked to have been given a realistic time for when to collect my food. That would have allowed me to make an informed decision of whether to wait or go elsewhere. If I use them again (and sadly, that is an if now), any mention of being busy and I'll be pulling out a different menu.

We arrived out of the blue to a very warm welcome. We said we wanted to eat in, no problem. Shown to our table and given menus and asked if we would like drinks, we picked our food, duck to start with, (awesome). Mains came and again (awesome ). Well let's say our food was lovely and we will be back again.

Had a good meal last night but a little surprised given the reviews it was not the best Chinese ever. It was very consistent with good takeaway that you can find in most cities. Service was very pleasant and easy to order. Highlight of my meal was the duck spring rolls, lots of duck and cooked perfectly. Salt and pepper spare ribs were just okay, not very meaty or flavorful. Main of orange duck was a little too sweet and the pineapple would have been better replaced with orange. Good portion of duck. Another positive, my son had sweet and sour prawn, Peking style and thought it was the best sweet and sour sauce ever. For takeaway, a good option but not worth a special trip.

Had a takeaway from the river vale whilst on holiday in the area. The owner was very welcoming and very chatty. Ordered beef with fresh chilli, egg fried rice and a hot and sour soup. It was all very nice and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone.

We discovered this place fairly recently, and I don't think I've had better Chinese food. The lady who runs it is so lovely and friendly, it is always a joy talking to her and the food is fabulous - I can't recommend it highly enough!

The takeaway we had today was the best we have had for years. The flavours were really good in all the dishes, and the service was excellent with my son being taught how to write in Chinese whilst waiting for the order.

Five of us attended on a Tuesday evening for a family member's birthday. The restaurant is very small but cosy and the host, Wai, was wonderful and very friendly. She spent plenty of time with us chatting and encouraging us with our food options. The food itself was delicious and tasted fresh. Options for dishes to be spicy or non were welcome as I enjoy the spice where others don't. The duck pancakes were delicious and the beer and white wine flowed well. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.

Our party of four ate here one evening during our four night stay in Lechlade. The food and atmosphere were perfect. The restaurant may be small with only four tables but well laid out so plenty of space. Food was big on flavour. Lots of choice and everything we had was freshly cooked and served by a most charming lady. I would certainly go back if we visit this lovely village again.

Ate in on a Friday night. A lovely old building with the owner running a takeaway and small restaurant with 4 tables. Although it's small, the tables aren't really jammed together so it's a nice atmosphere. The best thing is that the owner is an incredibly friendly and attentive host, so it was more like a personal dining experience than eating in a restaurant. Food was great, very hot and fresh and much more good Chinese restaurant type food than the bog standard takeaway type food that prevails.

From the moment I put my head in the door I was treated as though I was the only person using this restaurant. The owner who also served us was really friendly and polite and have just the right amount of attention.The food is probably the best I have eaten it was made to our own taste as we were asked if we liked it spicy. Spare ribs are to be recommended and the veg in black bean sauce was immense. Usually wine in a Chinese its not all that good here the house white was excellent and reasonably priced.The person who have a negative feedback has shot themselves in the foot. A simple error which on reading the review was corrected by the restaurant has meant they won't eat this lovely food again well more fool them!Thank you riverside I wish I lived nearer.

The small door at the front of this place makes it feel like you are entering someones house. The restaurant is tiny, just four tables and if you are lucky conversations between the tables will make the meal so much more enjoyable. It's main business is take away but do yourself a favour and sit in. We started of with a quarter crispy duck pancakes, yum. For mains i had the kung po chilli beef, my partner had sweet and sour pork. We shared a singapore noodle and egg fried rice. The food was delicious. The lady serving was just loverly and friendly. If you are in this part of the world and fancy a good chinese this is the place.

Absoloutelly love the rivervale unfortunately it is so well hidden most dont know it is there i always try and eat in there as very friendly and happy people in a warm inviting area with excellent food my personal favourite crispy shredded beef!!

The River Vale takeaway we had was exceptional. The portions were perfect and the ingredients tasted fresh and were very nicely cooked. We thought our takeaway was good value for money too. We were on holiday locally and would definitely order again if in the area. Try it!

After a year of living in town we have only just got round to visiting River Vale. Problematically, one of us is gluten and dairy free so have avoided Chinese for over 10 years. What a joy, then, when we learned that this could be accommodated! Super food, tasty and as I say great service. I can't really say if other places would be able to cater for our requirements, but River Vale certainly go to great lengths to please.

Really lovely meal out with our kids. The atmosphere was friendly with the owner being very attentive. The food was excellent and extremely fresh. It's a small restaurant but very impressive.I will certainly return soon. Perhaps to try the new menu that the owner was talking about introducing in a few weeks.

I have had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant on several occasions with my partner. I can honestly say that the food was presented beautifully, and the oriental taste and flavour definately matched the aesthetics of the dishes. The Lemon Chicken was so delectable in the sense that it was flavourisom yet tender, resulting with the ultimate dish. Not only was the food the best Chinese I have ever had, but it was the calm ambience inside the restaurant that made me feel so warm, relaxed and welcome. The layout is very intimate, the lighting really sets the mood, and the customer service adds to the experience. On that note, the lovely Chinese lady was so polite that you almost don't want to leave. The dining experience is made more special as the staff there are genuine people, and their strong family values shine through with the way that they interact with their customers.I will say it again... the best Chinese food I have ever had, so nice that I drive all the way from Berkshire to dine there. Most of the business for River Vale is takeaway but they do have 4 tables at the front of the building for eating in. Had the set menu B which was very nice, well served and portions were large. All reasonably priced including the drinks. Don't go here expecting a Michelin standard dining experience, go here expecting good food in a pleasant environment at a reasonable price. Recommended.

My partner and I decided to try this restaurant on account of the many glowing reviews on trip advisor. We were not disappointed by the quality of the food or service and the quaint setting (a tiny establishment seating about 16) was lovely. The food is all nicely presented and portion sizes are very generous. The Kung Po chicken (rather spicy) and the crispy chilli beef are particularly good. The staff are welcoming and highly accommodating and nothing is too much trouble.We would both strongly recommend this restaurant and will be returning in future!

Maybe it was a genuine error that the front of house (proprietress?) requested a payment £10 higher than the price list, although this was corrected when challenged. Perhaps also an error that a main dish ordered (mine!) was omitted from the take out parcel. But having gone the extra mile to support a local trader (8 mile round trip on a frosty night), sourced cash to pay for my meal instead of card, at her behest, I expected better from their quality system. I won't be returning which is a shame as the food is excellent.

There is a shortage of decent Chinese restaurant in the area and we were pleased to discover the River Vale in Lechlade recently. It is located in an old timber-framed building and the dining room itself is tiny.The food is freshly cooked and of good quality. We enjoyed hot and sour soup, salt and pepper pork spare ribs and a very large half a crispy duck, served with plenty of pancakes, cucumber and spring onions. The house red and white wines were very reasonable and the service exceptionally friendly and well-informed.In short, if you want a good straightforward Chinese meal, we strongly recommend the River Vale.

We found this restaurant via Tripadvisor and what a find it was . We ( my wife and her twin sister ) were staying in nearby Burford and were looking for an outstanding dining experience . Rivervaleis a tiny " dine in or takeaway " and caters for a maximum 16 persons . The hostess is absolutely charming and the food is piping hot and delicious .Then when we were about to leave the owner brought us a complimentary desert . We WILL definately return .

Everything about my experience at River Vale was exceptional. The service is brilliant. Very personal and genuine waitress (who I believe was also the owner) who was more than happy to give information about the 300 year old building and recommend places to visit. Food was also very good. I could tell it was fresh and the sizzling dishes are lovely. Beef in black bean sauce came out in a sizzling skillet and was very tasty. Locals from the village of Lechlade and neighbouring towns come in and the owners seems to know them all, asking how they have been. All points to the sign of a good chinese restaurant.One minor downer is that the toilets are tiny and basic. I struggled to fit my 6ft 3 frame in comfortably!If you're in the area, it is well worth a visit.

We live nearby and this is by far the best Chinese in the area. We have not eaten in, we go for the takeaways, but whenever we have been in and seen people sat at the tables, they always have a big smile on their faces. Win is always welcoming and loves to chat to my two boys. My youngest always chooses River Vale for a family treat!The whole staff are friendly and extremely hard working.

Overall, while its not the best food that money can buy (and that's not meant to be in any way critical), for the price its probably the best value I've had for a long time.It is tiny - only four tables, so its a bit of a cross between a restaurant and a takeaway. However, we went in at 8:30pm on a Thursday, and we were the only people there. No-one else came in for the whole night - even for takeaway. I can't understand that - it's great food, lovely ambience, fantastic service, and really good value. Why would you not go there? If I lived in the local area - I'd be there every week!I wouldn't really say 'tucked away' - it is on the main road - just a little out of the village centre - they could signpost it a little better perhaps. We are boaters passing through and after a (so far0 long hot summer) of cooking on the boat and the (very odd) salad, was craving an authentic Chinese meal. Exploring the village of Lechlade I was delighted to come across this little restaurant hidden at the back of the main village road. Thank goodness we did, it was lovely, the food was excellent and as others have said, it is like knocking on a family door and saying "can we come for dinner?"The atmosphere was very family orientated (pardon the pun!) Delightful!I would highly recommend this restaurant if ever you are in Lechlade, we would be happy to come back.

Whether you're looking for a high-quality takeaway or a leisurely meal with friends at on of their four tables, 'River Vale' is worth seeking out - and once you have been, you'll return. The River Vale is an absolute hidden gem. Don't be put off by looks, as folk have said, it's like eating in someone's house. I hope it never changes. The food is fantastic - salt and pepper squid to die for - so fresh and appetising, cooked to order. The lady host is so friendly and lovely. I am only in this area annually for the nearby air show but would not miss eating here. Unfortunately it is too far from where I live for a take-away! Highly recommended.

This is he third time I've had a take-away from this completelky unassuming restaurant and on occasion it has been a pleasure to be looked after the host/owner and the food is just so fresh and appetising. Would heartily recommend you try it at least for a take-away. The restaurant is small and quirky with a limited number of covers; but that wouldn't ditract from the service or the food quality.

Found this restaurant on trip advisor & was not disappointed, although tiny with only 4 tables it was very cosy. The owner was very friendly & nothing was too much trouble, we wanted something that was not on the menu & that wasn't a problem. The food arrived freshly cooked & piping hot & best of all tasted fantastic!! BEST Chinese meal we have had in a long while. I'm lucky enough to live in Lechlade, and have frequented River Vale numerous times. The menu is extensive, the food is cooked to a high standard and the welcome is second to none.I know of many people from the surrounding villages (which have their own Chinese) who choose to come to this restaurant for their Chinese food. The restaurant has 4 - 6 tables, but will be moved around to accommodate different size groups.The take-away is always quick, always ready on-time, and more importantly, correct (which is more than I can say for some!)The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the service is really excellent. Very highly recommended.

A strange restaurant in that it is not like your typical chinese restaurant but don't be put off because looks can deceive and the Rive Vale certain deceives. With only 4 tables it is smaller than your average chinese restaurant but what it lacks in size is certainly made up by the quality of the service and food. People travel from far a field to eat at this restaurant and once you eat there you'll know why. Very highly recommended - you will not be disappointed.

I live in Lechlade not too far away from this restaurant/takeaway and popped in there last night for a takeaway. Food is always cooked to a very high standard. The vegetarian choices are also extremely good, and they will adapt meat dishes if required to suit vegetarians i.e. Singapore Noodles without the meat.We have driven further afield to try out other Chinese Takeaways/ Restaurants, but there seems little point, this one never fails to get it right. Whilst I acknowledge that the restaurant area is a bit small, they will always do what they can to accommodate. When I popped in for a takeaway last night, they seemed to have one big group of circa 25, and had moved around chairs and tables to accommodate, and everyone seemed happy enough.

This is a cracking little chinese. I live in Fairford which has 2. The Fairford chinese take aways hygiene scores are low and the food is poor, hence why we had to travel to find one we liked. Although they dont deliver, many of my neighbours also come here for thier chinese fix. A good range on the menu, even though I often have the same meal. Service is pleasant and cooked quickly to order. I dont eat onions so my meals cant be taken from a pre made batch. The price is good also, especially for the south.

Having read the reviews of the River Vale in Lechlade 11 of us, who were in a bowls tour from Wales, decided to try it out last Saturday evening. We didn't think for a minute we would be able to book having read there were only four tables, but we were lucky. What a welcome! (even though we arrived 45 minutes late due to poor service by a taxi company) The restaurant is owned and run by Win Ying, her sister & brother in law. Take no notice of 1st impressions - as previous reviewers have said - it is like eating in someone's front room.We ordered in groups of 2, 3 or 4 & these orders were put on separate bills with great efficiency by Win. I was in a group of 4 and shared the set meal for 4 at a cost of £22 per head ( a shared platter of 5 different starters, aromatic duck with pancakes etc .,followed by 3 large mains with rice & tea or coffee). We are all VERY big eaters but we failed to finish - the meal would have fed 6 easily. The other groups had wonderful food too.If I lived closer to Lechlade I would not be writing this review - I'd have to keep it a secret!

I've used River Vale for takeaways a couple of times, and found the food to be very good indeed. Last night, me and Mrs B decided to have a bit of a drive out, and a meal. The restaurant is very small - only 4 tables, and not decorated like a Chinese restaurant at all. It is very homely, a bit like being in someone's front room. The lady owner is very friendly and welcoming, and gave some great recommendations....the fried dumplings with ginger and vinegar were out of this world. The salt and pepper squid is also worthy of a mention, beautifully cooked, and attractively presented. The toffee apple dessert was also a highlight.All in all, a lovely meal, reasonably priced and good friendly service. We'll certainly be back for more.

Tiny restaurant, where you are looked after extremely well. Very good value - the cooking is excellent, a cut above pretty much anything you will find outside Kensington. The chilli squid is superb. A good take away too. You'll go here for the food, not the ambience - it's a bit like eating in someone's front room.

Unfortunately this restaraunt is hidden away and hard to find but it is 110% worth going and sitting in for a meal, the lady is lovely the food is wonderfull but i highly reccomend to eat in to enjoy the food propoerly

Four of us (two elderly couples) found the restaurant by chance while looking for somewhere to eat that night. It is a small restaurant plainly furnished and not imposing-looking. No fancy Chinese lanterns or tropical fish tank. But the lady who served us was extremely helpful, and the food was as good as we have eaten anywhere. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigeo wine. She didn't have one in stock, but rushed out (we know not where) and returned with a bottle! Altogether a pleasant evening, and the prices were very modest.
