Fantastic food - especially enjoyed the chilli duck, the spicy cod and the green curry. Great portion sizes, enough for tomorrows lunch! Even though it was just a take away we very warmly welcomed by the staff - a big thank you for the extra special birthday freebies!!

First time we had visited Street Thai in George Lane and it won't be the last. Really impressed. Great food. Love ribs, but not easy to find decent ribs these days. These were superb, as was the sirloin steak dish, sticky rice. Loved it. Can't wait for our next visit.

As close to real Thai as I am to real Madrid. If you want your tempura with as much batter as your local chippy might use, your pak choi as salty as a chip and your red curry a bit 'meh', this is for you. The ambiance is austere, hard surfaces make this a very noisy restaurant, even if only half full. And whilst this place had some good reviews, I worked guess that's because they've never really eaten in a good Thai cafe, or decent restaurant. It plays to its audience, because of the area it's in, but leaves lots to be desired. So in short, not one I'd be recommending, except to some one I'm not too keen on.

The restaurant is ok and nicely set out. I keep on trying to find a Pad Thai like you get in Thailand but certainly haven’t found one yet in the suburbs of London. The food here was adequate but no better. We should have sent the Pad Thai back as it was dry and didn’t taste as it should. Unfortunately we were hungry so we ate it. My wife commented that it wasn’t great with the reply”you ate it all didn’t you”. Service isn’t what it used to be.

She was so lovely gave advice about what should we choose or what not which is so rare. Most places don’t give you help on this way. Food was delicious we like a little bit of spicy stuff. Our first order....and our last. Ordered online following a recommendation. That was quick and a seemingly efficient way to order, paid online too. Received confirmation email 5mins later. An hour later received another email saying order was on its way. 5 mins later I received a phone call saying they had just received 10 orders at the same time as there was a website error. Asked if we were happy to wait 40 mins more, or refund. Chose to wait as we were hungry. Eventually the food turned up after another hour had passed. We tried phoning after the 40 mins but no reply.

The food here was ok, fairly standard Thai offering. The service was hit and miss though - incorrect drinks, then starters delivered. These were all swapped. When mains came, mine was correct, my partners was wrong. Raised this - took about 10-15 minutes before the correct one was brought, by which time mine was cold.

Shocked that vegetable spring rolls were soggy with zero flavor, chicken cashew was a disaster with no flavor, egg fried rice was obviously made days ago. I will warn all our neighbors never to waste £30 on this.. chef who put this together is of the laziest variety and should be ashamed !!!!! We threw it in the bin and ended up raiding our fridge. The atmosphere here was great from the minute we walked in. We were given a choice of tables, not crammed in, which we really appreciated. We also noticed the very subtle and tasteful background music, we could actually hear each other talk; thank you so much for that. It's worth noting that the menu is more extensive that the one shown on the website. We loved the atmosphere, we were sitting opposite the bar so could always see a waitress if we needed one, and we could just see in to the kitchen and see everything being made fresh. They were more than happy to accommodate difficult dietary requirements and it was obvious that the waiting staff really know the menu properly. The food was absolutely great, as was a very reasonable reasonable house wine. Worth a visit, and definitely worth a return visit!

After deciding on what to have as my main I wanted a vegetables dish to go with it but there was no vegetables dishes other than salads on the menu. As soon as the waitress realised what I was after she said she would put an order through for a cooked mixed vegetable dish!! I was very happy with that. The Purple Thai has become a an absolute gem of a restaurant find here in South Woodford. This was our third visit in a year and the place just keeps getting better and better (It was pretty faultless before!) If you're going to the cinema opposite this is a great place to start (or finish) your evening. That's what we did, Saturday evening 8pm. Two/three waiting staff in a very busy room means that some food seems to stay on the pass a minute or two longer than it probably should but they're consistently rushed off their feet and do an amazing job.The tamarind duck with coconut rice was stunning, the flavouring in my partners green curry was quite literally gob-smacking. Shared a generous plate of spring rolls, satay chicken, prawns and tempura vegetables to start. The food came (and went) quickly!Crispy duck in tamarind sauce followed with a perfect sticky coconut rice. We came here back in January and it was good but today it went up a considerable notch! Do not eat here!!!If you want tasteless food then eat here.Four of us went to this restaurant and we all hated our food. The starters were ok it was the mains that let us down. The veg in the main was barely cooked, literally raw. We had to pick out the onions because they were too raw. The dish was very dry so we had to add soy sauce and chilli sauce to give it some flavour. We told the waitress who told the manager and he didn't even have the courtesy to approach us and discuss the situation with us. Not very good for the reputation! I had heard from other people that it wasn't nice here but thought to give it benefit of the doubt, but now I wish I hadn't bothered. A waste of money.

Three of us had a meal here on a Thursday evening to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant was not full. There were only two waiting staff who were very overstretched - one had to make cocktails for much of the time which meant she could not take orders or serve food. Our starter took one hour to arrive and we only had two courses and two drinks in the two hours we spent in the restaurant. The food was unexciting and looked and tasted very like the kind of Thai items you can buy in the Sainsburys across the road from Purple Thai.I asked to speak to the manager but was told there was no manager on the premises. This experience cost me £80. This restaurant is in urgent need of a manager to ensure there are enough staff and to make sure the food is good quality restaurant food. Otherwise the only person benefitting from a visit here is the person who gets the takings. Avoid and eat elsewhere.

Been to Purple Thai a couple of times and the food is very nice. The curries come with plain rice which is a little unusual - I prefer fried rice and managed to work something out with the kitchen. Still for many, the boiled rice will be exactly what you're after. Having lived in Thailand, I can spot bad Thai food a mile away. I'm pleased to say that Purple Thai do good authentic grub. Some of the dishes have understandably been toned down a bit for the western palate but they are still tasty. I like my food spicy and so was pleased that the kitchen had nam plao plik (chilli/lime/fish sauce) and were happy to add fresh chilis to my fired rice. The atmosphere and service in the restaurant is good and I'd definitely recommend if you're after a Thai meal in the area. They seem to do some really good lunch deals too.

I booked a table at Purple Thai 3-4 weeks in advance. I called, as asked the night before to confirm the booking. This was a long-planned get-together with friends from out of London, and on arrival, found that our table was crammed into a too small space, with 4 of us facing the wall, rather than each other so that we couldn't talk easily, and we were squashed on to 3 small tables, with barely room to move and people pushing past to get to the loos. It was not what we expected and spoiled our night. We asked to speak to the manager, explaining that we should have been told that it was full when we made the booking, and that the table was not what we expected. The manager was very dismissive, saying that he assumed I knew the restaurant and what it was like. I'm pretty sure most restaurants would not seat you in a squashed line facing the wall. When you turn up at 9 on a saturday night the last thing you want to do is to start finding a table for 6 somewhere else, so we decided to make the best of it and asked for something complimentary, and were given a bottle. The point is that money making was put above all else here. We could even have been told the night before when I confirmed the booking, and I could have made alternative plans. But we weren't, they wanted our money rather than making sure people booked in had a good experience. Aside, the food was good, the waiting staff friendly and attentive, but being squashed in, facing a wall and not able to talk to everyone in our party, and the attitude of management soured what should have been a great night.Beware when you are making a booking here. You might want to establish the exact position of the table you are booking.

The reason for this was that they seemed to be more interested in other diners and.In spite of numerous requests there was no hurry on the part of the staff. Not inpressed! Also some of the food was cold will not hurry back.

We visited in late December as we have family living near by. Coming from Australia I guess we have a fairly high expectation of Thai food as in Sydney pretty much every suburb has a great local restaurant which will consistently please. Purple Thai could go head to head with any local establishment back home. We ordered the fish cakes which were moist and delicious, spring rolls which were well cooked and crunchy then Pad Thai, a red chicken curry, stir fry and Pad Sew (?) - all we exactly spot on for taste and flavour. I desperately wanted the deep fried banana for dessert but the main meals were so generous I simply couldn't squeeze it in! Nevermind - next time.I have no hesitation recommending the food and reckon even if you don't live locally, it may well be worth the trip.

My boyfriend and I regularly visit this restaurant, and only now have I decided to write a review to state how genuinely fantastic this restaurant is. I had the prawn toast for starter and my boyfriend had the Purple Platter, and although we have never been to Thailand ourselves, it is clear that the Thai chefs at this restaurant are excellently skilled and authentic, none of the awful ingredients you get in takeway chinese food! Our mains, (chicken massaman and the weeping tiger), were also fantastic, the steak cooked to perfection, melt in the mouth. I love the choice of music at this restaurant, the ambience is perfect, not too noisy nor dull. I urge people to visit Purple Thai you will not be disappointed!

Our first visit to Purple Thai was an anniversary earlier in June 2014. Overall the food and service on this occasion was above average. Between June 2014 - December 2014 we have dined at Purple Thai approximately 10 times, with the last occasion a weeks ago being the final time that we ever visit this restaurant. In this 6 month period we have received our food that has been absolutely fantastic and we have let the management and staff know just how good the food was. In contrast we have received our meals and they have been just about eatable. We have let the staff know on many occasions at our dissatisfaction for the food and stated why it can be like last time(when it was sublime) and questioned if the chef had been changed. The chef has not been changed (as informed), therefore how can a dish served be great one day and uneatable on another? The last time we went to Purple Thai a week ago put the icing on the cake. My food was Ok as I only had starters as a meal. However my partners Green Curry was terrible, that she complained to the staff. I tasted it and it was not good at all (too many chillies, chicken chewy like mutton, random vegetables in a green curry, the sauce was so thick that it could be used a wallpaper glue), My partner could not finish the dish and we still paid for it regardless of the circumstances. The staff did not even offer a resolution our dissatisfaction (only an apology). As we have visited this restaurant on many occasions and spent £100s of pounds here, it is sad that we will not be returning to this restaurant unless changes are made to ensure the ingredients are as fresh as the staff state and the food is prepared consistently for our order. If this restaurant does not fix the issue, I envisage more dissatisfied customers and yet another restaurant will close its doors in South Woodford.Purple Thai Sort It OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I went to Purple Thai with two members of our family who have been there twice before - it was our first time. We both enjoyed the starters of satay chicken, spring rolls and battered prawns and followed it with one of the main courses on the specials menu. The duck was succulent and rich and the service helpful and swift event though the place was full. Nice reasonably priced meal and restaurant ambience.

I have been here a few times and the food is always delicious. I usually have one of the curries but this time my friend and I had a main course from the specials menu and I can honestly say it was one of the best meals I have ever had and my friend said the same. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. The staff are friendly and it has a great vibe. It's definitely worth a visit.

A friend and I had decided to go for supper in South Woodford to an Italian restaurant. As we were parking I noticed this restaurant. I have been to South Woodford a lot and can't say i have ever noticed this place. Perhaps its because the exterior is a deep purple in colour. The interior is modern and felt warm. The menu covered all the basics, however, was slightly light compared to other Thai Restaurants I have been to. I would definitely recommend the shared platter to start. The different flavours are fantastic and the price was very reasonable at £6.60 per head. For a main i had a Thai Green Curry and my friend had a Pad Salad. Both were delicious. I also asked the green curry be milder than usual as I am not a fan of chillies. When the meals were served the owner said that if I was not happy with the heat of the chillies he would make a fresh for me. The meal was fine but i was grateful for the offer.I would also recommend the Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand from The Cloud. Couldn't fault the flavour. Overall an excellent find and very reasonably priced. I shall definitely be returning in the near future.

Went here the other week. Was quite disappointed with the food. My partner (who is Thai so knows what she is talking about) said the Som Tam was not good. My satay chicken was not the best I've ever had

I visited this restaurant last night for the second time...choosing a weekday evening as opposed to weekends when it is very busy and very noisy. We waited over half an hour for our starter and found that the kitchen had lost the ticket which wasn't a good start, however the owner was over in a flash to let us know that our wine would be on the house which was more than fair particularly as we didn't have to raise the issue at the end. The food then arrived fairly quickly and was simply excellent. Beautifully presented starters and very generous main course portions. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would certain recommend. They do a two course menu for 12.95 Monday-Thursday however as you would expect choices are fairly limited but still good value if you want to budget. The service (apart from the kitchen error) was lovely and friendly.

Me and my husband decided to try this restaurant after passing it as it looked really nice and we're fans of thai food. The place itself is nice and cosy, its a small restaurant with lovely staff. We decided to visit on a friday night which was very busy and very loud (probably due to a large group celebrating a birthday) if you were looking for a nice quiet dinner then forget it. The food menu is quite small compared to other restaurants but to me a bit on the expensive side for what it is. The food itself was okay (we had red and green thai curries, nice enough). Coctktails were a bit of a hit or miss but not terrible. Overall its an okay place, for me personally this is a place i would visit for a sunday lunch not so much a place i would visit frequently.

My family and friends all 28 of us had an amazing night at purple thai, Service and staff where friendly, professional. The food was outstanding all dishes perfect and all served together even though we where a big party. We found the manager and all the staff very helpful and pleasant, they couldnt do enough to make my night special. The music and atmosphere provided by purple thai contributed to a night we will all never forget. We found the cost of the evening to be great value for the amount of food, drink and fun that everybody had. We would highly recommend purple thai for any celebration thank you all for making my birthday so special.

I have been to Purple Thai many times and every time I go, I absolutely love it. The Massaman Curry is absolutely amazing if you aren't a fan of spicy curries. I have tried it in various Thai restaurants but you can't fault it at Purple Thai. The portions are large so you will go home feeling completely satisfied. The owners are really friendly and welcoming, and overall its a really great place to go for a night out.

Where to start.... the VAT added on - my son spotted a tiny sticker warning you that VAT was excluded but I thought he meant service. He was right - so a Thai Green curry for 11.90 ends up costing 20% more plus the service as well. There were adverts for a 2 course special for £12.90 but when we tried to order this, were told that it was a different menu which wasn't supplied. OK, but this menu didn't have any Thai curries to choose, so we chose off the main menu. The thai fishcakes were so rubbery with a very unpleasant texture, so we didn't eat them. When the waitress came to clear them away, we told her they tasted bad. She did apologize but still charged us £6 for them (plus the VAT of course). We just ended up feeling really ripped off and while the waitress was pleasant, there was really very little care provided. AND my son ordered a coke for £2.50 - it was the smallest bottle I've ever seen - about 200ml. All glitz and no class.

I know the last few reviews have been not good but when I went I like the fact that the vat is very transparent and the food and drinks are the same as most restaurants in the area staff were great and the music was wonderful I'll be back

Yes, I too enjoy the food at the Purple Thai and find it very authentic. What I don't like though is that VAT is added on to the cost of the meals AFTER and is not included. This means that a plate of spicy noodles which was I thought was already expensive at £9.50, ends up being £11.50. My friend and I just had 2 main courses, some noodles and 1 bottle of wine and the bill was £60. I think this is far too dear. Many restaurants in London, such as the Brasserie at the Oxo Tower only charge £30 p/p for 3 courses + a cocktail. We also went to Raymond Le Blanc's brasserie and paid £13.95 for 2 courses. So, how on earth can a basic restaurant in South Woodford justify these prices?

When this restaurant first opened you had to book in advance to get into this place. I've watched this place get more and more quiet, with no booking required anymore. After a visit last weekend I can fully understand why. To put it simply: the portions have reduced in size and the prices increased drastically. Rather than reprint the menus for a price change, they have simply decided to stick on a label adding "VAT not included" - that is a MASSIVE increase. POOR VALUE - POOR SERVICE.The Story (Short Version!):I ordered the "King Prawns" to start. I was presented with 4 prawns on my plate - larger than coldwater but certainly not king size. At £6.50 a portion, and lets not forget the "VAT" - this worked out to be £2 a prawn! I could understand if there was something gourmet, but theres nothing special about 4 average battered prawns and a pot of watered down chilli sauce to wash it down. I've paid this price for both better quality and larger portions in high end central London restaurants. This was sent back. The other starter was £6.50 per head which 2 of our party ordered. Bearing in mind this was a £13 (+VAT) starter to share - it came on one plate and we didn't actually realise it was for 2 people it was that sparse. We confronted the manager about it all, he was aggressive, rude and generally had the attitude of "I don't give a damn". After a 20 minute debate with the manager, we waited for our mains after much deliberation on whether to just leave. 90 minutes from arriving, we were asked by a waitress if everything was ok - well not really as we still had no food! At this point we decided to settle up for what we had and leave. No apology from anybody, no offer of any form of refund - just one manager with a serious attitude! We paid for our 2 cokes, 3 beers, bottle of house wine and "2 person" starter PLUS the VAT which totted up to a whopping £50+ bill.I don't agree with writing negative reviews - this is my first and hopefully last one. I always thought that people should contact the waitress/ manager/ owner with complaints to allow them with the opportunity of fair resolution but the manager in this case was aggressive and unreasonable, and quite frankly - this restaurant just seems like it's run by a cowboy who wants something for nothing.I'm looking forward to trying out the new restaurant that will have replaced this one in 12 months time.

Average Thai stir fry but admitted using Red Thai curry paste! About 3oz chicken for each £10+ small bowl.1st and last time I visit this place. I complained against the illegal addition of VAT on top of menu prices and the Thai waitress said she had told her boss repeatedly and he said he didn't care! OK... neither do I, I shall not be back!

Disappointing Experience - Thai Food Tasted Like Bengali Cuisine. Recently ordered from here expecting to enjoy authentic Thai flavors, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a massive letdown. The food barely resembled Thai cuisine and oddly tasted more like Bengali food gone wrong. The rich, vibrant, and aromatic spices that are characteristic of Thai cooking were completely missing. Instead, the dishes were heavy, oily, and poorly spiced, more akin to a poorly executed Bengali meal. The Pad Thai, which should be tangy, sweet, and nutty, tasted like a bland stir-fry with overcooked noodles drowning in an unbalanced sauce that seemed closer to a mustard-based gravy than anything Thai. Even the curry, which I hoped might redeem the experience, tasted like a like a beef bhuna/black bean sauce dish. It was hard to tell what cuisine they were going for, but it was far from Thai. Overall, the meal felt confused and lacked any authenticity or care in preparation. If you’re looking for real Thai food, avoid this place at all costs. It’s clear the chefs are either misinformed or simply don’t understand the basics of Thai cooking. Would not recommend!

Been eating here for a while, food has always been delicious. Not this time, the crispy sweet and sour chicken looked like slops, and was soggy and tasted poor, the chicken with cashew nuts was ok but in a very small bowl, not up to usual standards, very disappointing!
