This is a place to avoid at all costs! We questioned the bill as we felt we'd been overcharged and instead of getting a polite explanation, we basically got a load of abuse from the manager!!! And if you're looking for good coffee, seriously don't bother going here.

Recently in Kirkwall and was looking for somewhere with some character for coffee and cake. This cafe from the outside looked as if it fitted the bill. However, although we did have coffee/tea and cake we felt that the lady behind the counter was rather unwelcoming and not very friendly. A cheery smile would have been nice. Would not return.

Ordered two cups of coffee, given the choice of “instant or bean”. Chose bean, but I didn’t realise that meant that just one bean would be shared between the two of us. Got served two mugs of hot milk, for want of a better word. We took one sip each and returned the drinks to the counter. The better part of £7 wasted, I’d sooner have donated it to charity.

The most unhelpful woman I’ve ever come across!! I placed an order and she refused to take the drinks order until I told her what food we wanted. I ordered a roll and chips and when the food came, I got a plate of chips, no roll. She put the pots of tea on a tray but the milk and sugar were on a tray at the counter. I asked her if I could take the tray to my elderly parents and she said yes. I returned with the tray and she said to my brother who was still at the counter “well you won’t be needing this then!!” As she started to pour a jug of milk. She was sharp, rude and had a I couldn’t be bothered with you kind of attitude. I’ll never set foot in that place again. You pay for food and a service there’s no need to be obnoxious and rude to customers WHO ARE PAYING MONEY!!

An old fashioned straightforward cheap cafe that is dog friendly. It’s a bit like going back to the 1970s . This cafe is taking advantage of the cruise ship and other one-time customers in Kirkwall. A shabby cafe where you hope for value for money notwithstanding the out-of-date decor. However, this is not what is on offer. Poorly filled rolls, which lack any generosity or quality of filling and coffee (£3.20 for a latte to go) which we think was instant coffee and hot milk. Avoid. Support the young folk trying to genuinely show Orkney off, rather than those trying to rip the tourists off. This is not a good demo of Scottish pride or hospitality.

Wanted a quick snack for lunch and the town was busy. As described by previous reviewers the inside is shabby and dated. I thought maybe it was a theme type expierience ...but no ..it was for real . The chap behind the counter looked like he was a stand in, maybe the local farmer making an extra buck. His manner was that of a farmer, grunt, mumble, grunt . I was despeate for some nice coffee and saw at the back of the counter an expresso machine ....nice I thought ! ...so the "farmer" chap takes the mug and goes to the machine, I'm watching with the anticipation of a coffee addict .....looking for him to fill the portafilter pod with some lovely fresh ground coffee...but no !! He tries to hide what he's doing but I see him put a spoonful of instant coffee (!!!!!!!) from a small tin into the cup and then with dramatic panache hold it under the machines hot water outlet which makes a loud coffee espresso machine noise . Now suffering coffee cold turkey.... things just got worse. My scone was manufactured some time in February 1959 , the small plastic cube of industrial jam and frozen butter, the chicken and pesto pannini slapped together half a tube of tomato puree a teaspoon full of pesto from a jar and ....a hint of chicken . Give this place a miss unless you haven't eaten for a week or two.

What a lucky find. Small, clean and not fancy but offering good food. A regular "down home" place catering to locals. We were the only tourists. I enjoyed the sausage egg roll for 2.70 GBP. Very tasty and enough for breakfast. Tea was 1.00 and coffee was 1.25 GBP. What a deal. Virtually all of the breakfast offerings were less than 4.00 GBP. The server was the owner. A friendly man. This is a great cheap place to stay, even get offered a pick up service from the Northlink ferry which is super handy, this is very basic but has everything you need, could do with a bit of a revamp in the rooms but that's all, breakfast is lovely really nice people, also has wifi too

We had visited this little café two years before and enjoyed the atmosphere so decided to re-visit. We were disappointed to find the old juke box had gone and the waitress seemed to have no knowledge of it ever having been there! Now it is what it is - a café to pop into to have a quick, cheap lunch. No frills but nice enough. We didn't have any cakes but they all looked nice.

Popped in for an evening meal. 2 x very tasty burgers and some good beer later we left very happy. It isn't the grandest of places, but it does deliver good food at a fair price. Would definitely return if we were staying longer.

Not good.Waiter very poor. Dumped the food down with a grunt. 3 prawns for £11. Really ? Won’t be back.Great quality but unbelievably overpriced for what you get. If you’re a tourist and get taken in by all this overpriced nonsense then go and visit ……..if you’re a bit more savvy……AVOID!!!!
