Peyote Mexican Restaurant in Gateshead

Showed up for pur booking for a joint birthday meal to find the restaurant closed, in darkness, no sign on the door. They never contacted us to save us a journey. When I tried to call no one answered. Messaged them on messenger and Instagram to be responded with a screenshot of their Facebook post saying it's closed due to unforseen circumstances. Not even a typed message. No apology. This is our third attempt to go to this restaurant. We spent a birthday night trying to get into any other restaurant on the fell, all were booked, so found a takeaway pizza and left it there. Unforseen circumstances happen but the lack of communication, the rude screenshot response with no apology, it's not ok. This restaurant seems to have bitten off more than they can chew if leaving a note on a door for customers is too much to ask.

Have booked to visit this restaurant on two seperate occasions and both times it was shut? How can they accept bookings if they are closed? Shocking! Wont be visiting a third time - there are plenty other mexicans to visit

Lovely meal with my wife. Attended this quaint little restaurant one Friday evening. The service from the two young girls was excellent, very friendly without being overbearing at all. We had a valentines special dinner menu which was very nice and came with a few different courses and two cocktails. The starters of nachos and other small bites were really nice. Both mains were excellent and the steak taco was absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection!! Represented very good value for money. Minor suggestions or improvements I would make would be that to have draft beer available. There were only Corona in bottles which can often be a bit fizzy having this with your meal. I would also say both of the cocktails we had weren’t great, just ok. They were a little bit too strong. My mojito wasn’t very minty at all. Despite this I would still really recommend going as it was a lovely environment and delicious food.

Visited when it first opened a couple of year ago and was largely disappointed although did appreciate there were probably teething problems. Finally got round to trying again as I was told there was a new kitchen team. Service was excellent, the two girls were attentive without being overbearing. Our starters of stuffed peppers and chicken wings were really good and decent size for starters too. We both had tacos for the main. Pork shoulder was nice if a little dry. Wife’s fish tacos were good. Only niggle is the taco themselves were as if deep fried, I prefer a soft taco but that is personal preference. They’re a decent size for tacos and excellent value. We also ordered chilli cheese fries - enjoyed these and again decent portion, we should have enquired on the night but it seemed like they were made with mince but it wasn’t stated on the menu. Wife is veggie so she just avoided the topping as she wasn’t sure. No draught beer and only corona bottles on the menu, would like to see some other options but minor detail. All in all good experience, nice atmosphere despite being quieter due to just opening. Will be back.

Booked this restaurant two wks ago for my daughters birthday, family of five. Got the confirmation email it was all booked in. Turned up tonight and it wasnt even open. Absolute disgrace how they never told us, we were left standing there with no where to go. Cant say how disappointed we were after looking forward to our first family meal out in a very long time and then to be let down like this. Disgraceful not to even bother to tell people there not even open.

We visited a couple of weeks ago and I did not post a review straight away. I ordered fajitas and was a little disappointed that they were not as I would expect a fajita to be. They came in a sauce and I was expecting them to be charred and sizzling. However the menu does say that it is their take on a fajita and the food was very tasty. We shared a potato dish to start and my husband had a burrito. Both were really good. Wine prices were also good and we enjoyed a couple of bottles of black Modelo. Social distancing was great and we felt very comfortable and safe being there We came back 2 weeks later to give it another go. The menu isn't huge but I read it more carefully this time and asked the owner about some dishes that I had never tried before. The chicken wings to start were excellent. Just the right amount of spice and not greasy. We also shared some pork rinds which went well with the beer. I had the beef empanadas for my main and they were delicious. Husband had pork tacos that were equally as nice. Shared a bottle of Malbec which was recommended and was very good. Finished the night off with a very nice gin and tonic. Prices are excellent considering the quality of the food and wine.

Peyote is local to me but I’m ashamed to say this is the first time we have tried it! My wife and I were attended to quickly and when she enquired as to vegan options the chef appeared quickly and talked her through options (including mix and match or making her something from scratch)... I didn’t catch the name of the main fella greeting and taking orders but he was full of life and enjoyed a joke which we appreciated - after the wonderful food we sat for 15-20mins having general chit chat with him and he was a credit to the restaurant. Will definitely be back again soon - it’s well worth your money! I believe the owners run a brewery or spirit making enterprise so we were talked through various rums and vodkas and given a taster sample of a few - wonderful and appreciated!

We visited here during our trip to Newcastle. The interesting name and great reviews attracted us so we made the trip over from the city. We had the veg burrito, nachos and corn on the cob. Oh wow!!! It was all absolutely delicious. The lovely Scottish owner gave us a few bits of info about where they source their ingredients, how it was served etc which was great. The nachos in particular were amazing, I usually absolutely hate salsa, but I was fighting my husband for this stuff. I should really see if I can get the recipe off them, I've never tasted anything like it! The decor was super cool in the restaurant too, I love Frida Kahlo so I really enjoyed looking at everything they had dotted around. After the meal my husband fancied a coffee, which they didn't have on the menu, the owner was fab and made him one anyway, which he really enjoyed. We even got a lovely wee bottle of rose gin at the end from the owners other business. I really can't say enough good things about this place. If we are ever in the area again we will be straight back!!!!

Stopped off on Saturday night on a whim- food was lovely, one of us is vegan which was readily accommodated, great atmosphere and drinks were spot on. Tiny gripe that made a booking via table-agent which didn’t go through, still got a table as a walk-in. Suggest they add a service charge as there was no way to leave a tip with a card and neither of us had any cash

We have been searching for a Mexican restaurant since we moved up here in February 2018 and finally found a beautiful one right on our doorstep! Beautiful food throughout each course and the Churros were to die for!! Partnered with excellent service, we will definately be returning in the future (hopefully once a week if I had my way). Fabulous food, excellent service. Restaurant felt like you were a world away Capturing many aspects of Mexico and its vibrancy. It was a happy relaxed atmosphere, we're our family we're given exceptional 5 star care. It was my daughters birthday,the owner even created her a none alcoholic cocktail and Birthday cake. The dishes were made from traditional Mexican flour tortillas and you can taste the difference, all 5 of us had a different dish, each one brilliantly presented and tasted so good. We need to come back again soon, to try there more of there great bar and churros. Truly a gem of restaurant on low fell

Not only is this the best restaurant on Low Fell, it’s also the best one I’ve ever visited. I had the chargrilled squash tacos, which were delicious; amazing for us vegetarians- and the pork tacos were a big hit with my mam. The spicy fries were also to die for!! Somehow had room for some gorgeous churros (with a cheeky extra😉) which were perfectly crisp and a perfect end to a perfect meal. The decor and music in Peyote only added to the experience, adding to the authentic Mexican vibe. We were also blown away with the customer service we received, definitely made the experience even better!! Incredibly friendly, welcoming and passionate about the food. Incredibly appreciative of the cheeky churro and our little gifts at the end!! Thank you for a great night, I will be returning asap!!

Had never been to Peyote before so thought we would give it a try. The food was lovely...had the sweet potato tortilla, just the right amount of spice. All the food the rest of the party had looked delicious. Manager was friendly too. Nice little place. Would recommend.

Had a lovely meal tonight. We wanted to try a few different dishes so ordered chicken fajitas, potatoes, chorizo and sweet potato quesadillas, chicken empanadas and beef tacos. Everything was well presented and good size portions. The owner was lovely and very friendly. There was a really relaxed atmosphere just what we needed.
