Fantastic views from the restaurant but from there on in a disappointing experience. My starter of pork cheek was burnt and the duck breast I chose for main was over cooked and tough to the point that my husband had to stabilise the wobbly table when I cut the meat. My husband did slightly better with a rather lackluster leak and potato soup, his main was a success, he chose the chestnut and mushroom Wellington which was good. We were the only diners in the restaurant, which added to the slightly dismal ambiance. At over £100 for 2 with therr courses and a single drink it felt over priced compared to other establishments in the area. In its favour the views were brilliant and it was very convenient for bridge 116 on the Mon and Brec canal. However the slightly longer walk to Crickhowell is rewarded with excellent food at the Bear.

We visited for an overnight stay, which included dinner and breakfast. We were a little anxious having read the reviews. However, we had a lovely bright room, which was very clean. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and very good breakfast, which was freshly cooked. The staff were so pleasant and welcoming and the setting is extremely picturesque. Yes, this lovely old building needs a lot of TLC, but the staff do their best to make your stay enjoyable.

It was a warm day in Wales, and we ate on the patio. My husband and I commented that we felt like we were at a fantastic ski resort with the mountain view and the chilly weather but the sun shining. There were locals there who were enjoying the place as well, so that tells you it's a local favorite.

We had hoped that we would be able to have dinner at the hotel, but we’re given to understand that this wasn’t served on a Thursday evening. Also when I asked for the menu, I was told that cooked breakfasts were not provided on a Friday morning. The room itself was very warm and comfortable, but unfortunately I had great trouble trying to turn the shower on and also the light over the sink did not work. The lighting generally both in the bathroom and bedroom was very dim.

We were staying locally and had seen this restaurant on tripadvisor so decided to try it. It was very local to where we were staying so we called in one afternoon and booked a table for that evening. When we arrived we were shown into a very nice dining room which was empty and remained empty except for the two of us during the evening which was a pity as it was a big room and therefore had no atmosphere. The food however was excellent and the portions catered for good appetites. The staff were very kind and welcoming and although we were the only two in the restaurant they were very attentive. When we went to pay we could see that there were people eating in the bar and in retrospect, had we known, it perhaps would have been a more relaxed atmosphere there however we were there for the food and the food had been excellent. If we were to go back we would ask to be served in the bar if there was no-one else in the restaurant.

Took family out for a special meal booked a week in advance. Turned up to be told there was a 15 head party ahead of us who had pre-booked, waited over an hour for very expensive and undercooked lamb that we could hardly see as the room was so dark. One mortgage later and the bill was paid, £5 plus for each drink of lager shandy, sorry but we really felt let down, especially when we advised chef that meat was undercooked, to be told "well one (lamb) was well done" but no one could identify which that was !! Poor attitude of staff and lack of atmosphere altogether. Really not worth the £228 bill....!!!!

A number of good points in contrast to other much less so. To start with the positive: Stunning location with an extremely pleasant garden to have your drink in when the weather allows. Decent room as long as you do not need chair or want to watch TV (strangely placed) with very good beds. Very quiet as long as you do not have a wedding taking place in the hotel. Great breakfast with a wide choice of different good quality foods (coffee a bit weak though). Less positive : on our first night there was a wedding with the disco taking place in the hotel... Impossible to sleep before 11.30. Frankly the dinner is not worth the price nor the wait. There are a number of very decent pubs around which are far better. On sunday nights (when a lot of pubs are closed) they do a pizza and prosecco deal which is a bit difficult to understand. Luckily you can change the Prosecco for something more appropriate. Pizzas are surprisingly good but take more than one hour to arrive.

Oh dear a rather sad and dated place. This whole hotel needs a great deal of money spent to bring it back to life. Our room was too hot , bed and bed linen were subpar. The bathroom which was once grand had cracked ceramic floor tiles and tap heads that came away in your hand. Staff were friendly but lacked professionalism. Super was acceptable but we only ate once. Breakfast was very strange . No fresh fruit on offer when I asked for some I was given an apple! My partners vegetarian breakfast came with cockles !! On our second morning we did not bother to take breakfast. Please please sort out the problems at this hotel as the setting is wonderful.

This is a fantastic looking old house. However the decor is straight out of the 1970’s.Had an evening meal here. Food was bad - I usually consider fish and chips a safe option, but fish was obviously from a freezer (square shaped), was overcooked with easy batter and very fatty. Had little or no taste other than the cooking fat. I chose badly as the others in the group thought that their meals were OK - but not great.Service was poor - little training (waitress did not know the term “draught beer”). Staff were a nice enough group of teenagers, but certainly not skilled.

I have obviously ate at a number of restaurants over the years and this has taken the crown for the worst wait and service I've ever had.Table was booked for 7:30pm, we were huddled in to a corner with another two people, right next to the radiator. Which was on full too!Orders taken 20 minutes later, and only ordering a bread sharer for a starter we thought that it would be pretty prompt in coming but we were waiting another 30 minutes for that to arrive. When we received our mains it was 50 minutes after that. Our server placed the plates down and said "Sorry for the wait... There's a big party in".To me that's not an excuse... There was a big birthday party in but that obviously didn't happen instantaneously and would have given notice - get more staff in, or don't take as many reservations for tables.Food in itself was nice, although an EXTREME lack of choice for vegetarians - three choices! We were offered a dessert and would have had one but weren't prepared to potentially wait another hour. There was another table near us where I witnessed someone hand their starter back and cancel their main.

Booked into the hotel for an overnight stay, very spacious reception, was renovations taking place while we were there. Room was fantastic, very comfortable and clean with good views. Restaurant however let it down, had mussels which were gritty, and a steak pie where the pastry was so hard as to be inedible. My wife had an average meal neither of us had dessert. The information pack in the room states the bistro restaurant is open from 12 but we were turned away as the chef told the reception staff he wasn't opening till 6pm. Bar prices were a bit steep and not every beer was available. Comes with breakfast included but I wouldn't have had it if it wasn't already paid for. Worth staying there for the room but better off eating in either the Bear or the Dragon

Last year we popped into the Old Rectory basically because everywhere else was fully booked for Sunday lunch but we bowled over by the food and hospitality, so couldn't wait to come back but as we live an hour away we haven't got around to it until yesterday 07/07/20. To be fair to the staff they were rushed off their feet as there was a wedding party there and had i known that i definitely would not have gone there for lunch. To cut a long story short, not much hospitality from the staff, food over seasoned and some over cooked and the wait was horrendous, well over an hour and with two hungry children waiting to go for a walk up Blorange, its not much fun.

Booked in as a late decision, was told on the phone room £75 inc breakfast. When we arrived the room was dirty with what looked like mud all along the wall, paint starting to peel, marks on the carpet and a hole in the duvet cover...nowhere near what you would excpect for a room at that price for 1 night, however, i will add the bathroom was spotless. We didnt put our bags down and went to speak to the receptionist who was very apologetic and upgraded our room. This room was spotless and it was a pleasant stay. When we checked out the following morning, the £75 room that we booked had gone up to £85, we enquired if they had added money on for the room upgrade which was given as an apology to be told they hadn't. The breakfast was nice would have liked a little less grease on the plate tho, was disappointing as nicely presented. We have stayed here a few times in the past, a bit of a let down this time.

While staying at the Old Rectory Hotel, I decided to have dinner there. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I had the Lamp Rump which was very nice and served with some interesting and tasty accompaniments, washed down with a nice pint or two of draught Butty Bach. I ate in the dining area in the bar, rather than in the restaurant area through the back, though I believe the menu is the same in either. The service was friendly and unpretentious; I felt comfortable dining there on my own. I also had the full breakfast there, which was above average. I would recommend this as a place to eat if you are staying at the hotel, or even if you're not - I'd expect its as good or better than the other options in Crickhowell.

The food here is excellent, but the visit ws let down by the atmosphere and front of end staff. We arrived early in the evening and were directed to a large conservatory type annex that had no atmosphere at all, could do with some plants in there or something to make it more customer friendly. The meal was outstanding well cooked and presented. That is why it gets 3 stars. After the main course was finished we sat and waited and waited, to order desert, but nobody came near us so went to the bar paid and left, what a shame. During our meal nobody came to check if everything was ok. Second visit there and went because we thought it might have improved. Will not return a third time.

We dined at the Old Rectory twice while spending a week on a narrowboat on the canal and mooring here overnight. Our first meal was five stars and the second meal three stars. My husband ordered fish and chips, which came with the best mushy peas either so us has tasted. We asked their secret, but they weren't giving it away! I ordered plaice with buttered potatoes and leeks. It was so tasty that I ordered it again on the second visit. It was still good, but presentation and seasoning were both different, and a diced tomato addition detracted rather than added to flavor. Still good, just not as exceptional. We split a sticky toffee pudding with warm custard sauce, which was divine! The dessert menu had been overhauled by our return, and our cherry frangiapane tart missed the mark. They were out of blackcurrent sorbet and substituted vanilla ice cream, so all in all that dish was a disappointment. All I can see is, bring back the sticky toffee pudding! On a pus, the waitstaff was extremely friendly and helpful both times. Nice service! We'd go back.

We have a dog, so finding a hotel/inn in a particular location can be challenging, but this hotel allowed dogs in particular ground floor rooms & the bar for dining. For £75 a night for a double bedroom with ensuite is good value (room 1) breakfast included - did have a squeaky bed though. The room was clean and tidy and offered tea/coffee facilities. The ensuite was adequate but could benefit from some refurbishment. There is a restaurant but as we have a dog we sat in the bar area for both dinner & breakfast (this is ok area but showing signs of age) - unfortunately one of the chefs was off and only the bar menu could be offered, but this was sufficient and the quality & presentation of the food good. Breakfast was a buffet followed by a cooked breakfast should you wish & again well presented & good choice - example below, our starters. Staff very helpful & friendly. Overall good value, good food, friendly staff but the hotel from what we saw could do with some money being spent on it.

I visited the Old Rectory for Sunday lunch having popped in prevously and looked at the menu. Despite it being a Bank Holiday and we hadn't booked, we we were immediatly offered a table in either the bar or the dining room. We opted for the bar as there was a large party in the dining room and a private function in a side room. I did wonder if this would delay service, how wrong could I be ? The restaurant manager, Alan, swiftly took our drinks order and offered advise on the menu. We ordered a Pàté starter and the Garlic mushrooms. Both dishes arrived within 10 mins of ordering, presented beautifully. The Pàté was as smooth as silk, skillfully encased in butter, thus satisfying those who request it. Husband loved his Mushroom dish. Whilst we waited for our main course, I watched with interest, as few hotel guests arrive. Clearly early, they enquired about bar food/snacks. I overheard that it wasnt the norm to serve such during a Sunday lunch service, but the manager duly enquired in the kitchen, and soon the guests were happily eating some sandwiches, in the bar, despite the busy service in the restaurant. After an appropriate wait our main course of roast Beef arrived. I swear I could have eaten the Beef with plastic cutlery, it was so very tender and full of flavour. Cooked perfectly pink as we like it, though they do offer to cook it more for philistines. Along with a good selection of accompanying veg and fantastic gravy, it was faultless. I even asked for more gravy which was brought in a little china gravy boat. Despite being adequatley fed, we ' pushed the boat out' and orered a dessert each. Again, presentation was beautiful, my Lemon tart was perfect, the balance of the citrus with the sweetness of the raspberry coulis and sorbet was perfect. Husband had the sticky toffee and was suprised how light it was. The whole experience was delightful and we will return very soon to have an evening meal. Refreshing to enjoy a meal that is clearly cooked and served with passion, along side immpecable service.

We sat in the bar.The atmosphere picked up a bit after my husband asked if they could put some music on. Very nice, helpful staff, who made us feel welcome. However, Main Dining Room featureless, like a NAAFI canteen, so we ate in the charming bar area.Slight feeling that senior management had packed up for the day, leaving it to charming but inexperienced young people; shouts of 'Dennis' from the kitchen when food was ready; kitchen staff wandering into the bar in backward-facing caps and working gear; just lacking in the polish the hotel guests and others deserved.Food fine, if not exceptional; and charging £2 extra for a tiny pot of sauce for the steak outrageous.Nevertheless, OK for a visit, and the location perfect.

We booked a two night stay here having read the reviews on Trip Advisor. On arrival we noticed unkempt hanging baskets outside the entrance, not a good first impression. Not a particularly warm welcome at reception and we were showed to our room, which was small and had dated décor. You could hear people talking normally in the room next to us, so privacy wasn't great.Evening meal in the restaurant was a little disappointing considering the price and the experience rescued by the humorous service from our waiter, who was non-stop all evening.Breakfast was a complete joke. We hiked down into Llangatock from our boat on the canal. So glad we decided to stop at the Old Rectory rather than walking on the Crickhowell (although we know there are good restaurants there too!). The food was varied and excellent, and the service was great.

Just can't fault the food, but atmosphere, customer service would get a nil if TripAdvisor had it. Rang and booked a table, on arrival stood for ages waiting for someone to approach us, difficulty in finding our reservation, then shown to a table, where after sitting for 10 mins we were approached and asked if we would like to order, replied it would be nice to see a menu first! Ordered the meal and the food was very good could not fault it. There were other families eating also seem to have the same lack of service. There was a wedding reception going on, and all the staff seemed to be engaged with that to the detriment of the other customers. When it came time to pay the bar/restaurant was unable to deal and we had to walk to the hotel reception to pay. Very unsatisfactory evening. Will not be returning!

They had a large group in and originally suggested there may be a long wait but the food came promptly. Tasty food, good choice of beer and staff who genuinely seemed to enjoy being there. Give it a go.

Quiet village location near to good walks, but their own outlook , and the view from some rooms is spoilt by a permanent marquee as weddings seem to be their main business. Mid week it was quiet with few guests but that meant staff had time to chat and were friendly and pleasant, some very young and inexperienced.Good bar food and breakfasts. Homemade granola bars were to die forRoom (we were upgraded to honeymoon suite following a bad experience elsewhere) was tastefully decorated with quality furnishings, but the leather sofa was oh so slippery it put you on the floor within minutes! Bathroom looked large and had double Jacuzzi bath but no stand up shower due to eaves - pity:(

We only had bar food as the drinks flowed far too well. But we had out breakfast here and you could not fault it.

Visited the Rectory as part of a group of friends. The menu had previously been sent out to us and we had ordered in advance. I must say that it was an excellent day the staff were extremely professional and efficient and the food was also excellent. A good day was had by all. I would definitely recommend this for groups of people in the future.

Lovely hotel, clean rooms, really friendly and helpful staff and good food. The golf course was great fun too! We stayed in an executive room (14) and would recommend it - comfortable bed and jacuzzi bath. The most memorable part was the service - the staff bent rules and went the extra mile to make sure we were looked after. We will go back ...

What a beautiful meal we had for Mother's Day. Greeted at the door and shown to our table, service was fantastic. Polite and friendly staff made everyone feel at home. Each lady was given a potted plant to leave with as a gift from The Rectory. Such a lovely gesture to add to a delicious meal. The food was outstanding. They certainly have talented chefs here. We had traditional Sunday lunch and it came with all the trimmings. Desserts were to die for. We were a large table so got to see and taste a variety off the menu. Everyone loved what they had. Enjoyed our meal so much, we have booked to go again in a few weeks time. I would certainly recommend it.

We have been away from home for two months and had the best meal of our trip when we ate here on 13/10. We dined as a group of four, all ordering something different and all loving it. We were surprised there appeared to be hardly anyone else there but put it down to being a Tuesday. We stayed the best part of a week in Llangatock and were told by locals that this was not a good place. Ate at two other places and had reasonable meals but none anywhere near as good as the Rectory, so visited again on the Friday. Unfortunately our return visit was disappointing as one meal was overcooked (obvious as soon as it was put on the table and before even tasting - it looked burnt) and another, while nice, was nowhere near as nice as the same dish ordered a few days before. So perhaps it is a bit hit and miss. That said, apart from the burnt meal, the meals were equally as good and better value than what we had at the other two most popular places in town. The service was friendly and the place is just lovely. It does seem however to have got the locals offside and is maybe having trouble rebuilding it's reputation.

Having called to book a table for 2 on a Sunday evening, and waited for confirmation from the kitchen, we were surprised to be the only people eating at the Old Rectory. We sat in the bar area as there were a few people there, compared to no one in the restaurant. The food was good but everything else was lacking. Everything!

We attended this Restaurant with a large group of people. The old building is lovely and very welcoming. The staff also were very helpful. My husband had not been very well prior to this dinner, so I was worried that he would not eat, but I need not have worried, as the food was so good, he took small portions, ate it all and enjoyed it very much. The business deals with large weddings and conferences, I would be glad to go back again soon.

The wedding ceremony was conducted in the lovely conservatory with an open aspect to the hills beyond. The wedding breakfast was served up two flight of stairs, I was unable to see if they had disabled access. The main meal was nicely presented with a selection of vegetables cooked to my liking, soup was really hot and perfect of a cold day. The wine was excellent and very quaffable. The service was on the whole bitty and slow( ? under staffed), but so what everybody had a fantastic time. The evening buffet was a hog roast and cold salad. Perfect to absorb the alcohol!!!!! There was no overcharging for the drinks and the real ales were very much to my liking.I recommend this hotel for similar functions.

We had a fantastic evening at The Old Rectory in Llangattock for my dad's 80th birthday bash. A lovely 3 course meal set in a beautiful conservatory for about 30 family & friends. A big thank you from us all to Sophie & the team for making it run so smoothly & professional.

I expected just a normal hotel dining room, but the quality of the food here took us completely by surprise. Here is a chef who can cook and present food well, and deserves to succeed.I particularly recommend the tiger prawns, followed by the duck.Portions were of good size and represented excellent value. The service staff were young and inexperienced, but over time will no doubt help the place to higher things.I recommend you try it, and I would be glad to eat there again too, as I watch its progress with interest.
