Charged 12£ pp (the house being closed on Monday & Tuesday) to see a garden not even that well maintained... I've always thought 'National 'trust'' was a guarantee of quality. How wrong!

I usually only do the national trust places near Manchester but this is easily my favourite! It was a drizzly sunday but it didn't ruin our day. The staff were great everywhere we went and the ones in the house were very knowledgeable. The house is STUNNING! Beauty at every turn. As manx people we were very happy to see our flag on the stained glass windows! The grounds have a stunning array of flowers and a kitchen garden which the kids loved seeing. The woodland play area was a big hit and they loved the maze too. We visited the cafe and book shop too which were a nice break from the rain. Theres also two ice cream pop ups with Cheshire farm ice cream, which is actually well priced. Parking was easy enough, we arrived at 10.30 but note the house does not open until 12.30 on sunday (check the website on day of visit)

Situated next to Liverpools John Lennon Airport this is a little gem away from the city. Beautiful formal gardens, open grass areas suitable for a picnic and small raised wooded area looking out to the River Mersey. The house is lovely to walk through and explore its history. The cafe served more than the normal brown selection found at so many N.Trust properties. We can recommend the spicy chicken, on flat bread with salad.

This is a lovely place. Nice walks in the grounds and beyond. Often crowded near the maze and children's playground, and by the house, but the woods and Bund are usually less busy. And you can walk down to the river. Watch aircraft. The bluebells in spring are a must-see! And the shady woods are cool and pleasant on a hot day.

The house is without doubt one of the most beautiful in the National Trust portfolio. If you're in the area it's well worth a visit. Loved it The house is amazing if you like your Tudor history Each room has a guide who will give you information about the house and items in the room I spent ages in there on my own marvelling at the carvings on beds, wallpaper, priests hidey hole etc. The grounds though are hell. Full of screaming kids. Families throwing balls and frisbies. Setting up picnics Just so busy. This was a Sunday and nice weather but for such an historical place it was spoilt for me. The noise was ridiculous wherever you went. Dogs allowed on leads and a cafe and ice cream area. Large car park but very busy The hall was brilliant The gardens hell.

Ample parking and if you need a hand getting to the hall and gardens there's a kart to take you. Children's play area and maze and a viewing platform for watching planes landing at the airport. You can also access the coastal path and there's a woodland walk that takes you to a viewing point over the river and the runway. We have visited Speke Hall countless times over the years, this time we took 2 visiting Americans, we intended to wait for them in the cafe only to be told it would be £12 each just to walk through to the cafe. The jobs worth guy on the desk wouldn’t even allow us to go to the toilets. This marred our visit and only the Americans wanted to see it we would have left immediately. There should be some discretion surely for people only wanting a cup of tea while waiting. The guy on the desk was not friendly or a good example for visitors. Very disappointing.

Speke Hall and Gardens is a remarkable testament to the grandeur of Tudor architecture, surrounded by the splendor of its meticulously maintained gardens. The estate offers a vast expanse of space where one can stroll leisurely, taking in the sights of the beautifully crafted landscape and the soothing sounds of the waterfall. The cafes dotted around the property provide convenient spots to savor a light meal or a refreshing drink. The jacket potato, a simple yet comforting dish, is a favorite among visitors seeking a taste of home-cooked goodness. For those interested in the rich history of Speke Hall, the guided tours are a must. The Apprentice House tour, in particular, is highly recommended. The tour guides are exceptionally knowledgeable, bringing the past to life with stories and insights that captivate and educate. Speke Hall is not just a historical house; it’s a sanctuary where the past and present coexist harmoniously. The gardens are a horticulturist’s dream, with a variety of plants and flowers that bloom in a riot of colors throughout the seasons. The old-fashioned ironmongery section adds a touch of rustic charm, while the chandeliers inside the hall reflect the elegance of bygone eras. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful day out, Speke Hall and Gardens promises an enriching experience that will leave you with lasting memories.

Speke Hall is a national treasure. A well-preserved piece of history plonked in the middle of a modernised environment. There’s something a bit eye-opening when you see and hear the airplanes of the nearby airport in contrast to the quaint, relaxing feeling you get within the grounds of the hall. The house itself is a splendid example of Tudor architecture in Britain. There aren’t that many buildings of this quality that remain, so having the opportunity to visit Speke Hall is something not to be missed. View a real-life priest hole, a Tudor kitchen, an elegant Great Hall decorated with paintings and suits of armour, Victorian renovations and more. Thankfully I live within 30 minutes of the place, so it is somewhere we frequent with our children as they love history and getting some fresh air. It is a lovely place to visit regardless of the time of year, however, you will definitely enjoy it more in the late spring/early summer months when it’s a lot warmer. You can then get involved in various events they hold at the hall such as the recent Tudor day (May 2024) where there were a collection of people dressed in Tudor attire, dancing displays and even a court jester keeping the crowds amused. When you’re not engrossed by the history of the building or taking part in the events of the day, there are lots of places you can explore and relax. There is a good wooden play park for children of various ages. Depending on the time of year (please check before going) there is a maize maze, vegetable & herb gardens, a tea room, food restaurant and more. On days with sunshine you can grab a free deck chair on the North Lawn and catch some sun; having been there a few times I can say that it’s a little sun trap and provides a nice relaxing area to view the house from a distance. Overall this is a place that will not disappoint. If you like Speke Hall, I’d definitely recommend Rufford Old Hall and Little Moreton Hall for similar examples of Tudor buildings.
