Visited Mudlarks recently for lunch on our way to Ware for a family birthday celebration. I have recently changed my diet to mainly plant based food, no fat, no dairy due to gallbladder infection. I chose the one pot red curry with the salad and an apple and blackcurrant fruit tea. The food was so tasty and filling. Excellent value and staff very pleasant and helpful. Highly recommend this Cafe. Thank you 😊

Despite what is written on their website, this cafe is not accessible for a mobility scooter. I was passing the other day and saw an elderly chap try to ride his mobility scooter inside but there was too big a step at the threshold to permit him yo do so. Clearly a threshold ramp or two is/are needed.

We love popping in here early morning for a coffee and one of their delicious cakes. The Bakewell muffins are delicious- we were quite disappointed one Saturday to find there were none on display. We chose the carrot cake muffins instead thinking they’d be second best... but they’re just as good! Everything is beautifully presented, and pleasantly served. The fact that we can take our little dog inside with us is a huge bonus. One of our favourite places to go.

This cafe would probably be really nice if you don’t get served by the old lady with black hair. Me and a friend wanted to have lunch here but the lady who served us was incredibly rude to us and clearly just didn’t want to be there. It’s a shame because the food was okay and it’s a great organisation, but we’ve both agreed that we feel too uncomfortable to return.

We headed to Mudlarks after we heard whilst in the Hertford Tourist Office that Mudlarks served the best cup of tea in town. A mouthwatering selection of cakes were on offer - both vegan and vegetarian. The vegan strawberry sponge was fantastic. True to the recommendation, the tea was perfect - loose leaf, served in a generous sized pot. The decor is bright and cheerfully retro. Lovely courtyard area decorated as a garden, which made it seem larger than it really was. Great use of space and creativity. Great customer service all round, including the manager, and particularly good engagement from Harvey who brought over our tray. In the castle grounds we noticed that Mudlarks has planted and maintains a section of the gardens.

Mudlarks is a local initiative that I believe started with an allotment run by, and for, folk with learning difficulties. We had been meaning to try out this café for a while. If started off well as we managed to find a table but it wasn't clear we were meant to order at the counter rather than wait for table service. I think our order was forgotten as we had to wait ages with new customers arriving and being served before us. We were expecting a small menu in such an establishment but it seemed quite pricey for what we ordered (the curry didn't cone with even a chapati or salad) and l would have complained if had not been for charity, although the food was tasty. There seemed to be a lot of young staff who spent more time together behind the counter than giving good customer service, including making a comment about us as we left. Some kind of small wall or something behind the door to act as a windbreak would have made it less cold whenever anyone opened the door and with a bit more training of weekend staff and more even portion sizes this could be a really nice alternative café.

Whilst your time in Hertford, I would highly recommend this cafe as a location for your cup of tea. Having been to this cafe on two occasions, I had to leave a review.I am a very fussy person when comes to tea as it has to taste just right, however, this place uses the correct method. Tea leafs and wow, they make a difference in the taste. Reasonably priced, we sat down and drank away whilst taking in the atmosphere. I would highly recommend this to everyone as a place you visit and try out the tea.

I arrived here just after 2pm and was told that the kitchen stops serving food around 2 (there is nothing that states this on their website). The server then said that we could have soup as there was some left. We ordered two soups at £6 each and she brought us over the smallest portion of soup each and three slices of crusty bread. I could not believe how small the portion was and if she knew that there wasn't going to be enough then she should have charged us much less than what she did or told us. This cosy place serves a limited menu but decent enough for lunch. I ordered the sweet potato and lentil stew with salad and bread. I have to admit the side salad was pretty impressive: a heaping assortment of greens, white rice with red beans and an orange and cabbage salad. The stew was good; nothing spectacular but flavourful enough and not spicy. The two slices of brown bread accompanying the stew were surprisingly tastier than I expected. I got the food as takeaway and as someone mentioned, service seemed a bit haphazard. Kids and teens (literally) seem to run the place. They were friendly enough but it all seemed a bit disorganized.
