Monte Cassino in Scottish Borders

Just had a lovely three course meal here. Lovely staff, great food and the service was brilliant. Can recommend it! Very enjoyable experience.

Stumbled on this place as we are staying on the campsite in Melrose. Amazing food and great service. We had garlic bread to share which my husband described as the best he’d ever had. Shellfish pasta was amazing. The seafood was so fresh and tasty. Followed by the cheesecake which was homemade and delicious. Well worth a visit. We will return if ever in the area.

A group of 15 of us were easily accommodated and served in a timely fashion with some of the most delicious Italian food we've tasted. Highly recommended.

I can honestly say that I have never tasted Italian food like this, if I was ever to visit Italy this is how I would image authentic cooking. Fresh, hot and incredibly tasty and very reasonable priced. We can't wait to go back and try the pizzas next time.

The restaurant is fantastic. We wouldn’t go to melrose without visiting monte cassino. Pizza with Parma ham and rocket was the best I have had. Girls loved the Parma wrapped prawns. Staff and owner so friendly. Best Italian in the borders by far. Thank you

Another great night out at Monte Cassino - we have our staff night out there every Xmas - always fantastic! This was a smaller family do, but pizzas excellent, wine excellent, atmosphere excellent and not too pricey! Have read some negative reviews of this place - that would be at least my 10th visit, nary a problem!!!

Hadn't been for a while and visited with a group of friends recently Good selection of starters and mains, from meat and seafood to pastas and pizzas. Something from all parts of the menu was ordered and I think everyone was happy. Good coffee and a reasonably priced selection of wines. The restaurant has a good atmosphere overall. Service is relaxed, not rushed. Staff are good, prices offer good value for the quality. I'm sure I'll be back.

In Melrose for shooting birds and staying at a nearby hotel, we thought this was an excellent restaurant. We were so impressed that we went two nights in a row. [I don't understand what two recent negative reviews are about. NOT our experience.] I have traveled extensively and find such an excellent restaurant--excellent food, great service, warm ambience, fair prices--to be very unusual to find in a small town.

Average in the grand scheme of things Italian. Others do better. Felt rushed by staff, hadn’t hit the seat and was asked what drinks we wanted, Gimme a chance to look eh? menu states not a fast food restaurant. Again rushed by staff as the mains plates were cleared, instantly pounced on for deserts, couldn’t enjoy my wine, had to ask staff three times to give us space. Didn’t feel like you could enjoy the evening and relax. 4th and last visit as this one cemented the feeling of the last 3.

Is it really that difficult to prepare and present pasta that is beautiful to the eye and delicious on the taste buds??? Based on our experience this evening, Monte Cassino can't have any competition otherwise the place should have been empty. Really disappointing and expensive meal.......there really is no excuse for squirty cream and sickly sweet Nutella on a microwaved and partially concrete waffle for dessert. The House white was quite simply dire......I don't expect high end but Lidl and Aldi have a far superior selection under £5 The scoop of ice cream and flat white coffee. Don't get me started on the plastic tablecloths either 😖😱

Three of us had dinner here on the last night of a short stay in Melrose. No complaints about service or surroundings but the food and drink left much to be desired. Starter of a shared focaccia italiana which wasn’t. It was a thin pizza topped with sprinkled dried rosemary. Our pizzas were undercooked and the bases were very doughy. This appears to be a common problem in many Italian restaurants. Our house wine (an Italian merlot) was thin and insipid. Food and drink are very expensive for what is offered. Very disappointing. Competition required !

Great service, this 2 star review is based on the food, the servers were very friendly and helpful, also the wine was very good, albiet pricey, £9 for large glass of red and £10 for white. Before our mains we ordered a garlic bread, this came as three slices of frozen garlic bread which you can get from your local supermarket, which cost £4... and was burnt. Insult to injury was the few leaves that was under the bread, with nothing added, just leaves... For our mains we ordered the fettuccine passticcio and the penne mama carlema. The fettuccine pasticcio was drowned in an sauce that had no flavour and was very watery, the spicy sausage was the thin slices of packet chorizo you can get from your local supermarket and no cream was added to the sauce. The penne mama carmela had little flavour also and was was very dry... we both asked for a lot more parmesan to make the meal taste of anything... Overall very disappointed with our meal, which was also very overpriced for the food that was produced before us. Will not be returning.

A traditional Italian atmosphere greeted us on stepping in to the restaurant in the old railway station building. From the typical Italian menu we shared the Bruschetta (£6) to start followed by home made Lasagne and Penne Mamma Carmela (both £15.90). The Coppa Pavarotti sundae (£7.50) finished an outstanding meal with friendly and efficient service to match. We'll definitely return when next in Melrose.

Having had an awful experience at the Paolo restaurant in Galashiels, we were beginning to think we would never find a good Italian restaurant near our new home in the Borders, then along came Monte Casino!! What a wonderful gem this place is.. the food was outstanding, the staff were really friendly, the service excellent and the atmosphere was cosy and non pretentious. Without a doubt, this is our new “Go To” place to eat. Outstanding!

Had a brilliant meal here this evening. Everything cooked to perfection and what lovely staff. It's been a long time since we've had such a lovely Italian meal in a restaurant that really cares for its customers.

Excellent food, attentive service and lovely atmosphere, what isn't to like. Highly recommended the Monte Cassino, Melrose is a superb Italian restaurent ans I can't recommend it highly enough.

If you want great authentic Italian food cooked to perfection by Italian chefs and served by Italian staff then this is the best place to go. The food here is amazing and this is up there with a restaurant we visited in Rome. I cannot praise this place highly enough. Just excellent.

I’ve been here a few times for dinner, and food service and drinks have always been amazing! Tonight was out for a walk, kids fell asleep in the buggy so seized the opportunity to get a drink and something to eat! Despite the kitchen being closed (it was after 9) we were given a variety of nibbles (olives, breads, even bruschetta) and got some lovely wine! Food and hospitality is second to none! (And outdoor seating area is perfect for a wee wine and bite to eat) Absolutely amazing place- so kind and welcoming

I’ve dined out here for years, but never left a review. Never had a bad meal and this evening was no exception. Club Steak and Sautéed seafood cooked to perfection, finished off with a simple yet delicious Afogato. Service was great as always.

Visited this restaurant with some work colleagues for a evening meal. Everything about this place was amazing the food was outstanding and the service was top notch. All the staff were super friendly and very welcoming. Definitely worth visiting this little gem if your around the area. Also there is plenty of parking at the restaurant too. We plan to visit again next time we are working near 100%
