Miller & Carter in East Renfrewshire

Tucked away in the leafy suburb of Newton Mearns, Miller & Carter has long been a stalwart of steakhouse dining, but my recent lunch visit confirmed that it’s more than just a haven for meat lovers—this is a restaurant that delivers a well-rounded and carefully curated experience from start to finish. The meal began with a classic salt and pepper calamari starter. Calamari is a staple on many menus, yet so often executed poorly. Here, it was anything but. Lightly battered, with a crisp, golden exterior and tender, succulent calamari inside, the balance of flavors was expertly handled. A slight kick from the seasoning elevated the dish beyond the ordinary, setting the stage for what was to come. The 7oz steak, which followed, was a masterclass in how a small cut can pack immense flavor. Cooked precisely to order, the steak arrived perfectly charred on the outside, with a juicy, tender interior. Accompanied by crisp, golden fries, a juicy grilled tomato, and the signature onion loaf—a delightful tangle of crunchy, savory ribbons—the plate was simple but exceptionally well-executed. In an era where portion control and quality can be at odds, Miller & Carter strikes a fine balance. The dessert—a classic banoffee pie—was nothing short of indulgent, as it should be. Rich layers of banana, caramel, and cream came together in a perfect crescendo of sweetness, paired with a well-made coffee that rounded off the meal with just the right amount of bitterness. It’s worth noting that the set lunch menu offers impressive value for money. For the quality of ingredients, precision in cooking, and overall experience, the price is more than justified. But what truly elevated the meal was the service, with particular praise for Paul, our attentive and knowledgeable waiter. His timing was impeccable, his recommendations spot on, and his ability to anticipate our needs added a personal touch that many establishments struggle to achieve. The surroundings, too, deserve a mention. Miller & Carter strikes a balance between elegant and approachable—stylish without pretension, a place equally suited for a casual lunch or a special occasion. In a dining landscape where consistency can often be a rarity, Miller & Carter Newton Mearns not only meets expectations but exceeds them. A highly recommended spot for anyone seeking a well-executed, unpretentious, and thoroughly enjoyable meal.

The food is delicious and the service is exceptional. We were lucky to be served again by Thomas who is so welcoming and attentive. What a lovely atmosphere there is here.

As we entered, we were greeted with a warm smile. The food was delightful, especially the delicious steaks. The service was also excellent.

Went for dinner with my partner last night and would not return. The place is run down, filthy and freezing. The food is sub standard nothing tastes fresh. Even the jugs the water come in look like they’ve been bashed about for years. Just an underwhelming experience for a place that used to be good. Definetley would not return.

Our server/waiter, Graham I think it was, was excellent. He was very helpful, obliging and informative as well as overall very pleasant. The food was amazing!! One of the nicest steaks ive had.

The experience we got at Miller and Carter - Newton Mearns, was nothing short of exceptional. From sitting down we were made very welcome by our waiter, Graeme. to going through our we ordered of food, steaks and the like. The meal itself was also cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back.

My wife and I have only recently moved into a flat about one mile for Miller and Carter in Newton Mearns and to make life easier for my wife we have entertained a number of friends to lunch and how impressed we are as have been our friends. The staff are so very welcoming and the food is excellent…..their week-day menu is superb value. We are delighted to recommend this restaurant for the quality of its food, its service and its value for money.

Having been several times over the years and had excellent service and food, my recent visit to Miller & Carter Newton Mearns was, unfortunately, one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. From start to finish, it was a series of mishaps and poor service that left me questioning the restaurant’s reputation and commitment to quality. Their burgers are only served well done as they don't prep the mice for the burger at the restaurant, according to the food standards regulations. We weren't told this when we ordered for medium done. However, what came was overdone/dry and lukewarm chips, totally put us off the meal. Service was a letdown. Despite asking three times for our drinks, they took an unreasonably long time to arrive. One member of our party wasn't served a side to their main course, yet it mysteriously appeared on the bill and we had to repeatedly ask for the lettuce & sauce for another dish. As for dessert, the Banoffee pie was particularly disappointing. The quality was lamentable—far from the indulgent treat it should have been, it was more of an afterthought, clearly lacking in both flavour and freshness. What made the experience even worse was the manager's complete disregard for our concerns. Despite the issues we raised, we were ignored and no effort was made to rectify the situation. No discount or apology was offered from him, leaving us feeling not just dissatisfied but also undervalued as customers. The only person who apologised was the waitress, she felt really bad about the whole situation. Overall, Miller & Carter provided poor value for money. The food was formulaic and uninspired, the service poor due to understaffing, and the staff appeared under trained. I would not recommend this restaurant and will certainly not be returning.

The staff and atmosphere were fabulous. I had a rump steak with red wine sauce, chicken starter, and an orange bomb for dessert. Beautiful from start to finish and my steak was cooked beautifully. Thank you 🙌

First time here after hearing a lot about it, overall a bit underwhelming, i had noted on the booking it was my partners birthday, given that fact i thought we’d maybe have been given a nice table however we were sat at a tiny table for 2 in the middle of the foot traffic so people were passing by you every 2 seconds, the table had two extremely bright spotlights above it killing any ambiance, felt like an interrogation room, the light was shining off the cutlery and blinding you. The steak was ok, i’ve definitely had better, the camembert was good and the accompanying ginger chutney was amazing! Our lettuce was missing the garlic croutons? Both plates, dont know if they forgot or just ran out and didnt tell us? The staff to be fair were friendly and helpful, it wasnt bad but i’m not sure it was good enough for me to want to go back or recommend it. Price wise you’re paying good money so i’d expect a bit more.

We got the steak sharing board and to be honest the steaks were tough. Blood from the fillet on plate. Clearly not rested. Couldn't tell what steak was what. All tasted the same . The onion loaf was average and the lettuce with the bacon and mustard was inedible due to the excessive mustard. We were really looking forward to this lunch and deeply disappointed. The waiting staff were lovely but when we mentioned how tough the steak was it was ignored.

Food was cooked to perfection but I would say the price is slightly inflated due to the Miller and Carter name rather than the protein itself. The location, parking, facilities, and restaurant was all lovely, clean and accessible, my only personal issue was the room temperature being too warm with no cool air. The staff were amazing, very helpful and friendly. Our server Graeme R was amazing and made our night perfect.

She explained the menu’s and was very knowledgable about the food available. She interacted with us and was very friendly and understanding. A good addition to your team. Everything ran smoothly Turned up on time and immediately escorted to our table. Waiter introduced himself and presented us with the menus. Drinks ordered and we're well presented. Wowza! I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve been to M&C! Truly a special meal for my mum’s birthday. We ordered a cocktail each to start - the disarono one and the slinger(?). Both super fresh! Then I had the fillet steak which comes with a ‘wedge’ of lettuce (you choose your dressing), an onion rostie (fabulous), a choice of boiled potatoes, fries or chunky chips. You also choose a steak sauce. I went for boiled potatoes and choose the peppercorn. The sauce was glorious without being too spicy or heavy. Would highly recommend. Only thing I didn’t think was 100% great was the wedge and dressing as the dressing absolutely drenched the lettuce 🫣 so next time I’d get the dressing on the side. Next I had the chocolate orange bomb for dessert which was also spectacular and highly recommend! Really decadent! The chocolate orange orange the mousse comes in is a nice touch! My mum ordered apple pie and they wrote happy birthday in chocolate on the plate which was a lovely touch! All in all highly recommend and will be back!

Steak was great but too small. So bigger steaks. A bit pricey. So the price. Cleanliness . My menu had either wine or blood on it. The waiter dismissed my comments by saying it was wine. He should have taken the menu away and replaced it with a clean one.

Steak was lovely Starter was greasy, Mac and cheese for £4.75 is shocking. Paid supplement for chunky chips which were fried and dripping with grease Went as anniversary dinner and won’t go back. Staff all lovely really polite.

The food was good overall. The scallops starter was over cooked. Our server showed little interest in us and the other tables around. It was clear she did not want to be there. Drinks were late. Overall an OK experience but definitely not up to usual standard.

From the minute we sat down till us heading for the door, Kirsten was excellent. Friendly, approachable, quick and efficient. Checked in on us to make sure everything was as it should be however we didn't feel pestered at all which we have found in other places. Food was great too, cooked to perfection, presented beautifully and exactly as listed on the menu. Just a little short on the ice cream with the chocolate brownie but that's more of a personal preference I would say. There was a nice wee bustle as there was a few birthday celebrations in which added to the enjoyment. Lovely to see so many people enjoying themselves around. All in all, an excellent meal with brilliant service which means we will definitely be back.

This was mine and my families second time here and we couldn’t have been happier. The food was great and Darren was so attentive and friendly, it made the experience so much better. Nothing seemed like too much hassle especially grabbing another drinks order for the table throughout the meal. Upsold everything to us which we loved and is a definite asset to your team. I had the rump steak. It was spot on - cooked well, great flavour. The restaurant was busy and the staff were very polite and brought good energy. The fries and the onion loaf could have been warmer, no I don't stop our meal to ask for fresh fries.. For the prices proper napkins and ice with the water would be good. It"s a steakhouse and I enjoyed my steak!

Excellent food in a really pleasant atmosphere, salmon was excellent, as was the rib-eye.

Have always used Edinburgh and Glasgow but tonight went to Newton Mearns and it was by far the best service we have received. Food outstanding, Thomas (blue hair) is an asset to your team, pleasant, friendly and exceptional with customers. Will definitely be back. Had voucher from my grandson Marc last Christmas , this was the chance we had to use it , So worth the wait. The food was cooked to perfection, and Matthew was a very attentive server , overall a very nice experience.

Pretty cold reception, staff member seemed disinterested. Said were not taking any walk in bookings. Failed to say could book online. Cost them £200, how much other lost revenue, no wonder why some of these places are struggling!

The Miller and Carter in Newtom Mesrns is a hidden gem. Easy accessible and not the hassle and bustle of the City Centre. Great area for diving outside, weather dependent of course. Dined twice here and both times food and serviced e has been exceptional. Easy to reach as its just off the M77 if travelling for a drive. Would highly recommend.

Darren, our waiter, was an absolute delight. So friendly and nothing was too much trouble for him. Made us feel really welcome. I had my wee autistic daughter with me and asked to be seated at a quiet spot and they helped out with that too. Then there's the food, oh my, my favourite restaurant to eat in. Lovely visit.

I was in for lunch today with my partner, 2 year old daughter and mother in law. The food was lovely as usual but I am blown away by the service we received from Darren. It is so hard to find good customer service these days but Darren has it down to a fine art. He was so good with my daughter, chatting away to her and including her in the conversation whenever he was over at the table. Thank you so much Darren, you made our lunch so much more enjoyable!!

Can never fault this place. Have been on a number of occasions, service, ambience, attention to detail when being served, second to none, no hovering about, simply letting you get on with your meal and ultimately enjoying it. Back again, just so relaxing with attentive staff, not over attentive I may add. Would not hesitate to return. Back again, just can't keep away. Such a relaxing place to eat, nothing is too much bother. Great meal, friendly staff, what more could you ask for. Another visit, understandable as there is no fuss or bother ordering or getting served. The relaxed atmosphere says it all.

Ordered a medium steak, and it came completely overcooked, it was like eating charred cardboard. The chips were bland, and the salmon wasn’t worth the money for what you got. I’m never ordering from here again, save your money and go somewhere else if you want steak.

I would love to share my experience I encountered last Monday visiting Newton mearns miller and Carter. If I could give more than ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I sell used prestige and performance cars and having been in business for 16 years I know exactly how reviews help a business. From the minute we walked through the door we were welcomed by Darren and made to feel like a long lost friend. What a lovely touch, I was taking my mum (aka my chauffeur) for her belated birthday we were then greeted by paul again made to feel at ease and I ordered my special a double glenfiddich and a Pinot. My mum doing the driving had a lovely non alcoholic cocktail. Specially recommend by paul. We were left to enjoy the surroundings and made to feel so welcomed. I had the scallops and my mum had the calamari. These were both cooled to perfection 👌 both of us opted for two fillet steaks again compared to several restaurants in Glasgow these were absolutely magnificent and melt in our months. I asked paul for a certain cocktail he advised an old fashioned. Thanks paul that’s my new drink 🥃🫶. Darren I want to thank you and all your team. Vast improvement from the last time we visited a couple of years ago. Went for Father's Day lunch, booking was for 12.15, seated immediately. Food was prepared to high standard. Ellis who was serving us was fab!

Update. 10.06.24 Called in today to have face to face with manager. Very helpful explained it all. Darren took all our details and said he would look in to the matter and get back to us. So hopefully this will get us back to enjoying our regular trips to miller and carter. Hopefully it was a one of bad experience. We attended tonight for my mother-in-law’s80th birthday 5 Adults. We regularly have fillet steak all of us. Throughout different places. We ordered starters. Filet steaks. Surf and turf. But unfortunately especially my father in laws fillet. Well let’s say he said anyone got a magnifying glass. Extremely disappointing. Spoke to manager. When bill came he did say he discounted the bill by £30. As the waiter on bringing the plates out commented these don’t look like 8oz steaks. So for us it wasn’t about the discount on the bill. It was an 80th birthday meal. Service excellent. But so so disappointed after we suggested Miller and carter to my wife’s mum and dad.

Mid-week lunchtime visit with friends, good spread of various dishes, including fish, poultry & vegetarian, alongside their signature meat dishes. Had excellent service, with minimal wait for our first course, prior to mains. Only downside with my 5-oz fillet steak, medium rare, was sinew that had not been trimmed before reaching the grill ... shame. Atmosphere would have been scored higher had two parents taken more interest in their stressed toddler, seemingly impervious to his tantrums.
