My goodness! What a delightful meal we had here last night. We live nearby and had guests staying with us and we were having difficulty finding a restaurant open for dinner on a Tuesday evening in Winter, until we remembered this charming hotel. From the kind welcome, the drinks, menu reading and warming fire in the lounge, followed by the classic, simply ambiance of the restaurant, the friendly and efficient staff to the truly wonderful food, the whole experience was faultless. We will be back, regularly. Highly, highly recommended.

The menu had four main dishes but only three were available. Having booked for two weeks in advance this was disappointing. It was my-partner’s birthday meal and she (and I) wanted the missing dish. We were told 10 minutes after making the order.

We are regular visitors to the hotel and high up on the list of its many attractions is the excellent restaurant. The menu may be short but the food is fabulous and complemented by thoughtful and attentive service. Wine list is reasonably priced and very interesting. One of our favourite places to eat.

We've just eaten here for the last two nights and absolutely loved every minute of it. The food was fantastic and beautifully presented and the menu changed each evening. The wine list was interesting and well priced. The service was, without exception, professional and charming. We could even book a table in a side room to the restaurant which allowed us to bring our very well behaved dog along with us, rather than leaving him in the room. Eating here is one of the draws which pulls us back to this lovely hotel.

We ate here nightly during our recent stay at the hotel and are a highlight of any stay. The quality, presentation and taste rivals many Michelin starred restaurants, including the nearly Gidleigh Park. The menus are imaginative and changed daily. The ingredients used are always fresh and top quality and I can highly recommend.

Imagine a river in spate right by your door. The most perfect riverside walks to Fingle bridge (the equivalent of a black run due climbs and uneven pathways). The walk to Chagford is pleasant and lovely but this years rain washed these plans away. This is our 7th visit. I love to write and find the juxtaposed modern take on ancient mill on a river perfect for this. Dogs everywhere (again perfect for me) and staff that I have remembered across the years. Much travelled, I just can't help but come back year to this singular little spot that so well suits my writing and love of the moor.

I have been before and it was good but this time it was a complete let down, I am vegan and they assured me they could cater for me but my sandwiches (which were part of my cream tea)were four tiny squares of bread containing a slice of cucumber in two of them, three slices of radish in one and a couple of sprigs of rocket in the other. I am sure they must have forgotten and quickly made these. In today’s world it is easy to get vegan cheeses etc so I am really disappointed and doubt I will bother going again which is a shame as it is a lovely place it’s just a shame the food doesn’t come up to the same standard.

We spent four nights at this hotel/restaurant and the main criticism was the limited dinner menu . The pork dish was good but you had to pay extra for vegetables and at one meal the new potatoes definitely tasted re-heated. I am sure this restaurant was fine for a one off meal but not for a stay of over two days. Sauces on the food were too plentiful and strong. Puddings were fine as were the breakfasts. I am not sure how a vegetarian would have coped as the options were even more limited. Beds were lovely and comfy in great surroundings and the staff were excellent but a few extra options in plainer food would have made this place somewhere we would come back to.

We ate here two nights as part of a weekend stay. We loved the hotel but somehow the food was a bit of a let-down in comparison. Staff were brilliant. The wild mushroom gnocchi was so salty as to be almost inedible. I realise seasoning is often a matter of personal taste but either someone's hand had slipped or they just hadn't tasted it before it went out. We mentioned this to the wait staff but had no feedback afterwards. The fish and chicken dishes were OK, but nothing special. Another vegetarian or vegan option would have been nice. The dark chocolate delice however was the best pudding I've had in years. You win some, you lose some... As part of a weekend stay it was acceptable, but if we'd visited just for the food on a special occasion it would have been somewhat disappointing.

A large party of us visited for a Family member's Birthday. Generally I was very happy, the staff were very friendly and accommodating and the Cream Tea was lovely, served with plenty of clotted cream and jam to go round. The problem came when I needed to change my Son and tried to find the changing facilities only to be told that the only changing table was in the Ladies toilets. The staff were very kind and checked that the toilets were empty before I went to change my Son but as a Father it all felt very unwelcoming and would put us off visiting again.

Grand Tea (GT) a travesty: our setting not nice, an alcove off a passage, 2 adjacent small round tables, no table clothes etc. A lady (proprietor?) + Waiter brought our GT I’m bemused + disappointed, here’s why (NB: sizes are my estimates):-sandwiches 1 each x 4 fillings bread drying out/sparse fillings/bland. Duck parfait 1 each size £2 coin strong/bitter foul. Prawn 1 each crispy/tangy nice. Parmesan wheels 1 each tiny/dull. Macaroon 1 each lovely. Fruit pastilles 1 each small disc bland jelly. Goats cheese 1 pot @ 50g between us – tasty.Carrot cake 1 slice + Mousse 1 slice 3” x 1” Why 1 slice of each? Asked lady if a mistake, she turned sharply + snapped “they are to share!” Really? At @ £20 a pop each we get 1” x 1” carrot cake + mousse, say no more! Scones 1 each good but why all the icing sugar? Jam nice + Clotted cream plenty, lacked flavour. Milk @ 100ml per pot of tea, not enough, asked 3 times for more, ugh! The menu items online + in house for a Mill End GT cost £19.95 per person, we booked for 3: I see no mention of sharing items - ambiguous + rather evasive.Booking was uncomfortable exacerbated by the 25% deposit. I asked about stairs + dining room was suggested – thoughtful, until we passed it going to the alcove. I find Mill End tranquil but the lady host seemed rather brusque leaving me feeling uneasy. The quality/quantity/value of GT was poor overall + I would NOT recommend it. I only left a tip hoping the waiter might benefit as he looked a tad worn out.

The Mill End Hotel provides a really outstanding environment, quite apart from the food in the restaurant. We particularly enjoyed from the starters the quail boudin; the duck and foie gras terrine served with plum chutney and caramelised walnuts; and the seared scallops served with green apple, and celery braised pig cheeks. Our main courses comprised a delightful duo of venison, and a fillet of salmon served with oriental accompaniments (spiced fishcakes, soy-roasted tenderstem and sesame dressing.

The dining area was clean and the lighting was just right, along with the 5 course taster menu we had as part of out Travelzoo two night package. Serving staff were knowledgeable about the food presented, not rushed at all, and great cheeses to finish off before coffee and petit four. Wine not to expensive and a good selection, unlike the pre dinner drinks, where we ordered two gins , gin being a local Dartmoor one, and a fever tree tonic, no drinks list offered, so when we came to check out a little surprised to be charged £8.00 a single gin, so total cost of £18.50 a little steep.

It was absolutely splendid and well up with " special" teas we have enjoyed at Highclere Castle and Highgrove! The individual items were fresh and very tasty. Delicious scones, oodles of cream, lovely individual sandwiches! Proper tea ( not teabags) and all served with pristine Table linen. Lovely setting in garden - pity about the proximity of the A382 but that was no real problem. All in all, well worth the experience and we would certainly visit again.

We were visiting friends in nearby Chagford and wanted somewhere pleasant to eat for the evening and follow with a good night’s sleep. This place is delightful, really warm and friendly and very relaxing decor. Menus in the lounge with a glass of wine to choose the meal. Starters of a crab dish proved very good, light, fresh and great blend of tastes. For main we both had a spiced lentil and monkfish dish, unexpected combination but the right amount of spice to enhance the flavour. Service was excellent and just a nice place to eat. A good night’s sleep and very up to date clean and stylish bathroom. Breakfast all freshly cooked. We didn’t have our dogs with us but what a find for a quality hotel that genuinely welcomes dogs. The only restriction seems to be the dining room but that is fine for us, we love our dogs but not at the evening meal in the restaurant. Well done Mill End, we have found a place we will happily stay again.

We stayed here for a couple of days and ate their both nights. Firstly the staff were absolutely wonderful and could not fault them. The food was good, but in my opinion a little over complicated and would have liked to see a couple of simpler dishes. The sweet potato purée was over powered by the 5 spice and cinnamon to such an extent I could not eat it. But everything else was fine. We had a dog and this is a very dog friendly hotel and wanted her to be with us when we ate. We were lead to believe that we could eat with her in the bar. One table in a separate room does not constitute a bar. Having said that they are aware and trying to do something about it. So overall really good.

Due to our habit of turning of main roads and motorways at mealtimes we have been fortunate to find many fine eateries and today was another piece of good luck when we saw Mill End on our way to another restaurant in Chagford and my better half "suggested" I turned the car round and go back, which thank heavens I did. What a delightful establishment of tranquillity and understated elegance. Most pleasing for us as passing travellers is that they have the services of a chef of considerable skill and experience who produces dishes that anyone who appreciates good food would enjoy as much as we did.Its pointless recommending dishes because a restaurant of this quality is forever changing the menu, only to say we had two three course lunches and one two course lunch and without exception all the dishes not only looked great on the plate but tasted great.Couple this with first class service we received and this was one of our luckiest days.Thankyou Mill End.

Two lovely gin and tonics were served in the lounge area where we made our choices of starter and main course. After a pleasant ten minute wait in comfort we were escorted into the dining room. Our first courses were served fairly promptly one of chicken breast and another of red mullet followed by pheasant with dumplings and lamb. I cannot comment on the hotel side of this establishment but I fail to understand why people love this restaurant. My experience was so disappointing. Service and food were pretentious and staff training was poor. For instance, a waiter served my main course, noticed my side plate was still on the table and reached in front of me to remove it without a word of apology. He was also totally totally inept when taking us and our pre-dinner drinks through to the restaurant. I thought the portions were very small and yet I haven't got a huge appetite! We ate at the restaurant on two consecutive nights, and they were busy on both nights but staff were prompt and attentive. Had scallops to start on both nights - can only describe them as being absolutely delicious - exactly as described on the menu. Should be on the menu as a main course (as a larger portion size!) as they were so good. For main course one of us had the pork dish which was so tasty that we ordered it again the next night. The other main courses we had were monkfish with a slightly Asian twist and chicken breast with chicken and leek pie. We can only describe them as outstanding. The first night we finished our meal with the cheese board which consisted of a variety of local cheeses. On the second night we both ordered a chocolate and coconut delice dessert. Again, all outstanding. The only negative if we are looking for one would be that perhaps the portion sizes could be a little more generous - this would also apply to the full English breakfast. Service was mostly very good, although two of our drink orders were forgotten but quickly rectified.

We stayed for two nights and had dinner here on the first night which was extremely well prepared and tasted great. Lovely country hotel - we loved our room (Avon). Perfect if you have a dog in tow as lovely country walks.

We are fairly local and frequently walk our dogs along the Teign below Castle Drogo. We decided to make it special and have lunch one Monday. It was off season and the place was almost empty so did feel rather lacking in atmosphere, but the staff were friendly and professional, the decor lovely stylish and relaxed and the food was fresh and tasty and good value for the quality. Keep promising ourselves to return!

We were driving to Cornwall and ventured through Dartmouth and was seeking a place for lunch, we saw a sign and dropped in.The setting was fantastic, the sandwiches in the lounge were a delight and the service was very good. Very pleased that we found the Mill End on our journey.

This was the best meal and experience that we had on our trip to Devon. We were welcomed into the hotel, they were expecting us, the fire was lit for us as we were shown into the bar to choose our meal. We sat there until our starter was ready and then drinks taken through for us. Food was fantastic, service was warm and efficient. We will stay here next time. Please eat here.

We partook of the set table menu. It exceeded what we usually receive in most locations. It was one of those night where the service and the meal enticed me to spend on the extras/supplements to complete the experience, (nice wines, cheese board etc). It was a pur delight.

On a 2 night package, the first nights meal was inclusive. Typically we would look to eat elsewhere on the second night but the quality of the food was such that we had no hesitation in rebooking for the 2nd night!

We swung in for morning coffee and were made very welcome. The receptionist showed us through to a beautiful private lounge with great sofas and quirky decor. The coffee was a cafetière, generous portion with some upmarket ginger biscuits. A very relaxing environment and we could have stayed uninterrupted for as long as we wanted.

Despite a slight mishap with our booking for birthday celebrations, we were accomodated and dined on some wonderful food with service to match. True fine dining in a luxurious resturant - thankyou.

Birthday dinner: food was OK. Decor was OK. service was OK. Wine list was OK. Overall experience? Dull, vanilla, slightly claustrophobic, ordinary, bland....The restaurant fancies itself as fine dining. If isn't. At best it's run of the Mill (sorry) gastropub food, but it's dull, risk free. Totally competent but

Thought I'd treat my husband for his birthday, we were staying near Tintagel on holiday and the restaurant is approx 1 hour away....sorry to say it was not worth the trip.We were warmly welcomed on arrival and left with the food menu, hubby chose pastrami and I had yarg (cheese balls), both very nice starters, then hubby had chicken chasseur and I chose the lamb as main courses, meat served reasonably quickly on nice hot plates...mint source reasonably quickly...but it seemed to take a long time before veh turned up, my one big gripe was that the cauliflower cheese, whilst the bowl felt hot the dish was lukewarm...very disappointing. We told the waiter when he asked.Desserts made up for the delay in veg and lukewarm cauliflower cheese.Overall meal was OK but mediocre, nothing I would repeat or go out of my way for.

As usual, great service in a relaxed semi-formal atmosphere. Good food throughout. I like the use of round tables for groups larger than four people and Mill End seem to agree.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful country estate. Narrow roads to get there, but well worth the trip. Great breakfast and a special dinner in an extraordinary atmosphere.

Good food, good music and good company. A relaxing afternoon spent in the beer garden listening to the band.

The chap serving seemed friendly enough - but mushrooms still frozen in the middle & kebab barely warm. Disappointed
