This inn looks closed when first approached, however upon closer inspection I found out it opens at 5pm (1700hrs). It is good traditional very well cooked food. The service was pleasant and attentive. The portions were very generous with us having to have a carry out for our sticky toffee pudding dessert. My wife drove so I had a couple of beers from their extensive range This is a very good value venue and I would strongly recommend a visit.

The inn is divided in two spaces—a pub/bar (no one under 18) and dining room. Our family of four was staying near by and was too tired to drive to Lerwick. We didn’t make a reservation and thought the dining room was closed, but they opened it up, so we had it all to ourselves that night. The food was delicious—apparently, they do a brisk takeaway business and I can see why. Everything was fresh and perfectly cooked. The wait staff was friendly and kind to my 10 year old.

Lovely food this evening. I had the steak and Guinness pie while my husband had salt and pepper crispy chicken. Food was delicious but far too much for us to empty our plates. About an hour later we managed some Orkney ice cream, which again was large servings - 4 scoops of ice cream each!

Do NOT let the exterior fool you! We stopped in to check the menu on our way to another restaurant (Frankie's). We have high standards when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness and this met our standards. Didn't go into the bar, which seemed a bit rough at a glance, but the dining room to the right is very nice. Stayed and had 2 fantastic dinners (steak and Guinness pie and roast lamb dinner). We came back 2 days later and had starters and pudding, because we didn't have room on the 1st visit. Great sticky toffee pudding and Orkney ice cream. Angela is a great server and very welcoming and Leanne cooks up a wonderful, well priced dinner! Good wine selection at reasonable prices too.

We used to eat here always on our visits to Shetland many moons ago.It was out number one place for Sunday Lunch and often for dinner or mid week lunch. Here we were back again after 10 years and the same lovely friendly people serving at the bar. It was as if we had never been away. Time stood still just for that moment. The best thing was they greeted us as old friends and remembered both of us before we even said a word. Probably as we used to eat here so much.We were very boring and even though there was a new menu we went for the old favourite homemade steak pie, huge chunky home cut chips, peas lashings of gravy and all served with a friendly smile. We sat in our old table by the window (we are very keen on nostalgia) and had a wonderful time chatting to the lovely bar maid. She is just the best.Huge portions, nice and warm. The closest you can get to home made steak pie like mum used to make, and I manage to destroy when I try.I am guessing the new chip shop opposite has taken some trade, and we did try it for fish and chips. But there is no where like the Mid Brae and never will be. Best in Shetland.

This is not fine dining, but good pub grub with generous portions and friendly service. We had the fried fish platter - a big plate covered (literally) with various deep fried fish - haddock, scallops, scampi, squid - chicken stuffed with haggis and topped with bacon - yummy if a little salty, and hunters chicken - done well, but an awful lot of cheese grilled over it as well as the barbecue sauce. Puddings - we all went for various ice cream options but all went down a treat. Would hapily eat here again

Yes it looks a bit scruffy and there are cigarette butts outside but that's preferable to the days when they were on the inside.People have said its difficult to find the entrance but you just walk up the drive go through the right hand door and turn right and you will find the dinning room. Its comfortable enough and laid out in large banqueting style tables. The food on offer was good pub style. Service was friendly and efficient.

The Mid Brae Inn is something of a "Curate's Egg" at present. It is let down by its external appearance, (the entrance is not obvious and is seriously littered by cigarette ends), which is off-putting if you do not know what is inside. Although the main bar is pretty austere, the dining room is comfortable, and with a strong and reasonably priced menu: a number of dishes are verging on the outstanding. We dined here twice in May 2016: I had a first rate strip beef special on the first occasion, whilst the Orkney steaks we had later in our stay as part of a special "Steak Weekend" the Mid Brae Inn had organised were absolutely excellent. Eleanor, the chef, and the staff provided effective service and seem keen to do well. Recommended.

well what can you say about the MBI. We arrived in Shetland at 7.00am and drove the 45 minutes to MBI for one of Diane's breakfasts for all of us, MASSIVE is not the word and all at under a fiver, tea, coffee toast, bannocks, saccermeat the whole nine yards, all fresh cooked by Eleanor. A wonderful Shetland welcome for the first time visitors. Second visit was for dinner one night 15 of us, again, served with a Shetland smile and joke as only Diane can, the kitchen never batted an eyelid at our menu request and 15 enormous meals arrived all together, piping hot and just thoroughly enjoyable. We love you MBI gang, we really do!!

Full marks to Diane and her team. We had the biggest lunch ever, the soup was spectacular, but a word of warning, if you order starters you may well run out of room for mains. Fish and chips or should I say fishes and chip mountain had quality and quantity. The sirloin was memorable and recommended. Try the delicious coleslaw. If you can manage a half-sized pud (which are "regular size" anywhere else) you are a better man than me. Treat yourself to a knickerbockerglory if you dare, your only disappointment will be not finishing it. Friendly, clean and great value home made pub food.

We arrived to check out the Mid Brae Inn to find a broken pane of glass in the front bottom window and a bucket of fag ends which hadn't been emptied for some time, and fag ends lying around on the floor next to it. As you would expect I wasn't even remotely interested in going into somewhere so baldy presented. If this is what greets you at the entrance, would you want to drink or eat there? I think not. I visited the Mid Brae for the first time in many years for an all you can eat buffet over Up Helly Aa.... And I can honestly say that the lasagne that was served was the best I have ever tasted. The texture, softness, quality of the mince, cheese and preparation was otherworldly. I am a massive advocate of Italian food, I often seek out the best Italian in whatever city I go to, and order the lasagne (imaginative, I know) but nothing has thus far ever come close to what the Mid Brae served me.. I brought this up to the other diners that were eating with me, that not only agreed but also went further and said that the steak that they often serve is of an even higher quality. The service at the MBI is friendly and they go out of their way to satisfy your every need. The restaurant and bar are even nicer since the big refurbishment. 9.5/10

When you first arrive at the Mid Brae Inn the first thing you will notice is the cracked glass windows and the dated entrance, needs a bit of TLC. Don't let this put you off as where you actually eat in the dining room is actually quite nice.We had two toddlers with us but unfortunately there was only one high chair available, I could only see one other in use.On the Sunday we visited the starters were limited as most had sold out so we were left with very little choice. We all ended up going for breaded mushrooms which didn't really represent value for money. The main was much better myself having barbecue chicken lasagne with chips. This was absolutely stuffed with bits of chicken and the chips are some of the best I've ever had. The mains pretty much rescued our meal and we really had no room for desert due to the generous portion sizes. Overall it wasn't bad and we enjoyed our meal, can't really complain when you can feed 4 adults and 2 toddlers with drinks for £80. Will be visiting again.

Some of the menfolk chose steaks WITH ribs, it looked great, I was almost jealous, though my Medium Rare Sirloin Steak was cooked perfectly, and the CHIPS WERE THE BEST I'VE EVER TASTED. The Desserts were many and varied and although some of the choices were no longer available that night there were plenty choices left. Although I'd suggest the close the toilet doors so you don't look into the ueninals on the way in/out. And they could do with painting the outside doors or sorting the front door area up a bit, that's still a bit rough. Staff were excellent. Before the fire in April that put the kitchen out of action for a year and a half, my cousin and I would eat here frequently. This was our first visit since the post-fire refurbishment and I'm glad to say the place is as wonderful as ever. The decor is much nicer for a start. Previously it was a tad rustic looking, but now it's much brighter, with comfy leather seats too. The food is also spot on - my cousin had the pate with oatcakes for starter and the turkey with trimmings for main (the current menu is the Christmas one) and I started with tempura prawns and had sirloin steak for my main. The portions are still enormous and very filling, as well as delicious. We both finished with the gorgeous champagne sorbet for dessert. Good to see a much loved local eaterie back with a bang, and long may it continue.

It’s more of a good cafe than a restaurant and it is also a caravan and motorhome site plus wigwams ( colourful wooden weatherproof huts). It’s at Braewick not Brae which is 15 miles south. It has all the facilities that a caravan/ motorhome site needs. Electric hook up, drive over drains, black water disposals, clean water available, good parking surfaces. Problem is it takes a bit of finding these facilities! Even the pitches take a bit of locating as only a couple are numbered. All the rest have been washed off, blown away etc. The showers are looking old and are difficult to manage. There is a playground and the beach is 5 mins walk but bear in mind this is 1000 km north of London, nearest neighbours are Iceland and Norway so the water is refreshing. But the views are spectacular cliffs of red rock and in the sea a set of rock stacks (the drongs) look like a Viking longship turned to stone. Wonderful to look at at midnight. You might see Foula, 40 plus km away. There are blow holes through the cliffs, take care. The Northmavine musicians play at Hillswickplus informal dancing for a great night out but it’s a 5 minute drive or an hours walk. Great place just needs an update.

Right by the ferry terminal so the ideal place to wait for a crossing. This is popular with workmen and with families. They serve a wide range of food and drinks. From snacks to full meals. From breakfasts to afternoon teas. I enjoyed a coffee and a tray bake. Would have called in twice more during my visit to Yell but it was closed.
