Great place but now closed. It was Turkish food at good value at a clean, hygienic establishment. Spacious with good ambience. It is a pity the owner sold out and it is no longer

May I just say I am astonished to read some of the below reviews. I am a man in the twilight of my life and I visit mezem restaurant often - being an East Finchley resident it is one of the few pleasures I can enjoy as death draws ever closer. I am particularly disgusted by the person who claims that quality has deteriorated under the new ownership - I would say on the contrary, that mezem has gone from strength to strength since Andrew has taken over. Being a vegetarian myself I'd say that the vegetarian dishes - the falafel, the aubergine, as well as the vegetarian moussaka - are of a consistently high quality, as is the service. Andrew spends his evening making sure all guests feel utterly welcomed - I even dine alone sometimes and I still manage to have a wonderful evening. This coming from somebody who chooses to eat at mezem OFTEN. All in all I would say ignore the heapings of tripe you'll find below. Mezem is an exquisite restaurant and as a man with limited mobility I am delighted to live as close as I do so that I can enjoy its many pleasures often.

Mezem has impressed me, and I have dined at some of the finest restaurants in London. It was a real pleasure to spend my Valentine's Day with my loved one at Mezem. Let me start my talking about the atmosphere; I was greeted at the door by a man who transpired to be the owner of the restaurant- charismatic, charming and was totally genuinely. That's a rare find, as I have become increasingly tired of the robotic "how has your day been?" chat at most restaurants. This was different. The atmosphere was lively and fun but equally civilised. We were immediately provided with an extensive and very reasonably priced drinks menu, followed by a clear but appealing food menu. The service was impeccable. We were made to feel special and all of our needs were accommodated. I was particularly impressed by the incredible offer of a free bottle of prosecco, especially for Valentine's Day. The food matched the high standards that had been set. The lamb is so succulent that it melts in the mouth. My partner had the aubergine and falafel, as she is a vegetarian, and was very satisfied indeed. We are huge fans of Greek cuisine, and this is not the first Greek restaurant we have dined at, but it is indisputably the best. The portions are generous and the quality is clearly spectacular. Our wonderful experience was topped off when we received the bill. A beyond reasonable price for a priceless experience. We will be seeing you again.

I used to love Mezem and as my parents live nearby went often. New owner and quality deteriorated dramatically as has service. Falafel is what I ordered and an aubergine dish- really unpleasant. I wasted £16. Genzo across the road probably better as run by Turks.

Ok so having ordered a takeaway on them due to them not delivering the first one, they manage to destroy another evening of ours. I called them after 70 minutes, having been told 40 minutes delivery time; to not be fully understood by the lady taking the calls......I do have a London accent, lived here all my life. Once she actually got it, I was calling about our food having not arrived, again, she said it will be with us shortly; it was. Near an hour and a half later. COLD. SOGGY. WET. Chewy meat. Wet chips. The whole thing as a disaster. I love writing good reviews; I do not like to bother writing bad ones; this is genuinely deserved. Why I trusted them to get it right this time, having not even turned up last month, is my own stupidity.

Mezem is far and away the best restaurant in East Finchley, if not the best restaurant I have been to in all of London. The service is exceptional - I would particularly commend the new owner, Andrew, who deals with all customers with aplomb and a wonderful personal touch. The food is absolutely spectacular - my partner ordered the lamb shish and it looked so incredible that I broke my pescetarianism in order to sample it and I don't even regret it. I myself had the baba ganoush to start, which was just excellent. The signature dish is the salmon kebab, which I ordered for the main course, and I can safely say that I have never in all my days tasted a comparable fish. It truly melted in the mouth. The presentation is perfect, the ambiance is relaxed and extremely friendly, and in terms of quality for money I don't think I have ever experienced such good value in all my days. The main courses were easily worth £20 each.

Our second visit with friends. Very good value. What was a good restaurant anyway is now improved with the new ownership. Lots of good choices including several interesting vegetarian options if you want. High quality cooking; for example my Babaganoush was really good with excellent presentation, and the lamb Iskender (Chargrilled lamb with yogurt and home made tomato sauce) was first class as well. This is not at all your average Greek or Turkish. My wife'sVegetarian Mousaka was a quality production with salads and rice -for £7.50 -excellent value.I would have preferred a hot plate -but this a very small observation. Seems to do a very busy takeout trade which is a a good sign.

Mezem is now under new ownership. My wife, whose taste card we used, has enjoyed many meals with friends in the past under the former owners, but was disappointed on her last visit. She was keen, therefore, to ascertain if standards had returned to their previous level. This was my first visit and to say I was impressed is a major understatement. We were greeted by Andrew, the current proprietor, served by friendly and efficient staff and the food was outstanding. As a former food critic and lover of Mediterranean food (I live in the Middle East) this was a totally authentic experience and on a par with any restaurant in the region.

Mezem is a great Turkish restaurant in East Finchley. The food is always superb and it represents great value. As fairly frequent visitors we have been delighted to see that the restaurant has recently been taken over by a very nice guy called Andrew. His customer service skills are excellent, making us instantly feel at home and waylaying any fears that we had that the ethos of the restaurant had changed. Returned to Mezem last night and had lovely, clean tasting and plentiful grub at this simply decorated, modern Turkish restaurant in East Finchley. We shared a baba ganoush which was simple and tasty (although if you want to skip starters, you get given a yoghurt and mint dip with carrot sticks and pitta gratui), followed by delicious grilled salmon and pepper kebabs, with rice and beetroot salad. The portions are generous and the wine (a tempranillo) was good and reasonably priced. The service is friendly and attentive, and all in a really good local restaurant experience.

My boyfriend and I visited on a quiet evening- we were the only people in the restaurant for 30 minutes on a Tuesday night. The decor is fantastic giving the restaurant a modern feel and we were very impressed by the service we received, particularly as 30 minutes after arriving streams of people started flocking to the restaurant. We ordered a mixed grill for one and a duo of lamb and chicken kebabs. The meat was very well cooked however the sides let the dishes down as the rice was quite bland. The waitress was the only one there and was clearly stretched so it was good to see 2 extra staff come in to help and they were very apologetic. Overall a very good experience and will definitely go back!

We came here because another restaurant didn't have a place, so we took our chances. The place was empty, so service was extra quick. Also very kind to kids, seems that they have a good deal of families coming in. First, it is good to have a turkish restaurant in eat Finchley. The food itself was fresh and served in a pleasant way. Not sufficticated but as you would expect from a small restaurant. The imam bayildi was very good and so were the mushrooms and yhe spinach pancakes. When the mains started to come, the oksce started to fill up but service was still prompt, dedpite there bring only one waitress. The swordfish stake was a bit dry and not exciting. The lamb ribs were very nice and so were the white baits and the iskender. This restaurant was built in the place of coochin, which was a very good place. Mezem doesn't have the same atmosphere and not as sufficticated, but is a very good place when you look at it as a local turkish restaurant.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This is an attractive small restaurant which had a very nice and varied menu. There were three of us and as the starter we all ordered the meze plate. It was excellent. Then came the problem. We waited and waited for our main course. Three other parties of two came in, had their starter and received their mains, and we still had not received ours. At one point after about twenty minutes of waiting I asked the waitress for another glass of water and seeing neither cutlery nor plates in front of us she asked if we would like to see the dessert menu. We said, dessert? we had not even had our main courses yet. At that point she went to the kitchen and the three of us decided that rather than wait, we were happy with the starter and just wanted to get our bill, pay, and leave. Of course we were upset, but had been happy with the starter, and not wanted to continue waiting felt it was time to go.The problem is that somehow the staff do not understand someone saying that as they had not been served that they wanted to settle up and go. So we had to hear a slew of lame excuses about cooking times, etc.that some foods taking longer. I pointed out that one of the person's who came in well after us was eating the very dish I had ordered so the issue of cooking times was somewhat spurious. In the end we had to deal with a furious owner, but we paid up and left. Only to have the whole business follow us into the street where we were accused of filling up on the starter and then being sated we just decided to skip the main. All he kept repeating was that we had purposefully tricked him and there was no way to convince him otherwise. This was a bit too much. Frankly, what would have been best is if he simply apologized for the poor service, said to try the restaurant again and certainly the customers would have left feeling good about the place and willing to recommend it. Instead he was angry, his customers were certainly angry and were told not to come back. What he has to learn is to say sorry, but do try us again, which given the quality of the food we would have happily done.So take your chances.

Lots of London Turkish restaurants have authentic Turkish decor and music, which is great but not usually very convincing when busy London traffic is queued up outside the window. This was a refreshing change. Very good food and attentive waiting staff, but painting/ornament-free walls and no background music to drown out conversation. Try the aubergine and tomato starter, and the lamb chops are delicious. Turkish coffee is a must of course. The bill for 4 people, each having 2 courses, a bottle of wine, 4 beers and 2 desserts was £90. Great value.East Finchley now has lots of really upmarket bars and small restaurants compared with 15 years ago, and Mezem is certainly a popular foodies magnet
