Market Square in Powys

Have returned to this small village in Wales for several years now and continue to be amazed that when it comes to Fish-n-Chips, this business is the best we've encountered from Dover to Scotland and it's comparatively inexpensive. I'm writing this review, but these sentiments are echoed by my wife, children, grandchildren and cousin who have encouraged to write this review. While the fish is perfectly done, there isn't a hint of the greasiness often experienced. It's a winner!

A bit worried about ordering a pizza from a village fish and chip shop, but did anyway, there was no need to worry, it was an excellent Hot and Spicy pizza.

Stopped here for chips for lunch. Freshly cooked and honestly the best takeaway chips I’ve ever had! Definitely save your money and don’t waste it at the awful cafe at Pistyll Rhaeadr!

Stopped off on a Wednesday lunch - fresh chips were made us us and they were very generous portions. Packaged up nicely to eat just down the way at the pub that lets you eat outside if you buy a drink (unfortunately we couldn’t as they were closed but they still let us use the pict in tables) Small number of parking spaces over the road too.

If youre looking for a quality food come to market square, best quality around the area for sure, chips crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, doner meat blasts you with all sort of seasoning, curry nice and thick, i recommend 100% to come over here.

Not ‘traditional fish and chips’ at all. They were dry reheated oven chips, the gravy and curry sauce were tasteless and watery. And £10.50 for 1 fish and chips and 1 chips and gravy is a rip off. Save yourself some disappointment and get a sandwich from the spar shop next door.

Lots of great take away choices - the highlight is the quality freshly cooked chips & curry sauce to die for. Service friendly & efficient - nice family owned local business.

Whilst the fish cakes and burger were palatable, the chips were awful - it was like the leftovers from yesterday were chucked in with today’s and were therefore too crispy to eat! Wouldn’t recommend a chip shop that can’t make decent chips

Great little chippy that actually also does proper Turkish Kebabs - expected average but received excellence. Lovely place, good service & nice seats outside in the evening sunshine. Well worth a visit.

A beautiful Welsh village and right in the centre a fabulous little fish and chip shop. We grabbed fish and chips times four - with proper mushy peas and sat and ate them in the church yard opposite - the fish was superb and the service nice and smiley too. We will be back.

This a great traditional fish and chip shop that also offers a range of other fast food choices. The pizzas are freshly made and really are excellent & tasty. The service is efficient and friendly - you may wait a short while - but the food is cooked fresh for you. All in all I would 100% recommend.

Lovely little village square; limited parking but there is larger area further along the road. Theres shops, chippy, cafe, coffee shop, historic church & playground all within a 1min walk! There are open public loos & plenty of other things to visit within an easy drive.

Brought a meal here for my family of 4, I ordered it in advance and collect it, I had fish chips and musy peas, the chips were rock hard and tasted gone off they were frozen chips, I think they must have cooked the chips the night before and then re heated (I’m not joking) they were gross. The fish was hard and over cooked to and the musy peasTasted like dish water, I never leave my food but this time I did. You can see by the picture what this is like. I’d really not waste your money here and drive to the next chip shop.they shouldn’t be open selling this rubbish ps the photos are within 10 mins off buying not a day later

Glad this is back open but it's always going to be big shoe to fill when the last owner was from Wigan and cooked a mean chip.Fish was lovely, but the chips were unfortunately hard and quite expensive at £3.20 a portion. The peas also were hard and very bland.Will come again but I do hope the chip's are better next time.

My husband and I stoped for lunch it was a warm day so we ate outside the fish and chips were the best we have had for a long time the shop was very clean the service was very good recommend eating there

High quality fish and chips, plain and simple menu, nicely boxed up and packaged, outdoor seating in the temporary Welsh sunshine. All in all a happy experience, will return if in the area.

After visiting Pistyll Rheadr falls (recommended) we stopped at Market Square. The fish is really great here. It was very fresh and the batter really tasty. The chips were nice, like they should be - soft inside and crisp outside. Good-sized portions - not diet food but who cares? The 'outside seating' is just two benches but the little town and square are nice and you can sit and watch the people come and go (and they are coming and going here all the time.) I'm a bit surprised that another reviewer mentioned cutlery and napkins - there were neither. I had to go and ask for napkins after seeing how much grease had leaked through the box onto my sweater - two large stains. The gal gave me paper towel off a big roll. My husband also had a giant grease stain on his trousers. Don't put the box on your lap! Fortunately it came out and didn't bother our enjoyment of our food. But please - put a foil or parchment paper liner in the bottom of the box next time we come!

Lovely food, cooked to order, geneuinely great fish and crispy chips - served up in biodegradable cardbox boxes with cutlery and napkins. All very happy in my family group on the way back home to the midlands.

Proper FISH AND CHIP shop, doesn’t try to be too ambitious, genuinely lovely freshly cooked Cod and crispy chips. All the usual bits and pieces, chicken, pies, sausages etc. We visit regularly (probably too regularly) - never been disappointed.

Enjoyed three Cod ‘meal deals’ here at lunch time, lovely battered cod, fresh crispy chips and mushy peas with a choice of traditional soft drink (Dandelion and Burdock, Cream Soda, - all excellent.

Bit of the beaten track in the beautiful village of Llanrhaeadr YM Mochnant, but worth getting too. Very happy with the freshly cooked sausage and chips for all of us, nice sweet fruity curry and a half decent burger as well. Service was fairly quick (was busy), lots of friendly locals in the queue.

On route to Snowdonia, saw the sign, half mile detour, glad we did, boosted our meagre sandwiches with two large boxes of freshly cooked tasty chips and a battered sausage treat for the kids. Can’t go wrong.

Boxed up Cod and chips, £20 for four, forks and napkins, all cooked to order. Quality high, service efficient - nice outdoor seating - all in all V Happy.

I travelled 38 miles to sample the fish and chips at Llanrhaeder and I can only offer an average score. The chips were well underdone giving them a cardboardy texture and the fish was also underdone..Sorry but only average..

Had fish and chips hear not good fish tasteless chips okay my wife wonted just chips and gravy but as previously stated by a previous reviewer the grumpy northener could not let her have a tray with the gravy poored on top of the chips only supplied separately not good

Smashing little chippy run by slightly grumpy northerner (nothing wrong with that), service is quick and effiicient, COD is cooked freshly for you and is battered perfectly, there isn’t a huge menu so don’t expect anything other than traditional chippy fayre. I work in this lovely area a few days a month (farm rep) and believe me there is nothing better any ware near.

We stopped off here whilst visiting a wonderful waterfall. The lady who served us was lovely and cheerful and advised on the menu for our younger child. The food was cooked fresh and tasted perfect. The fish was first class and we will definitely go back when we are next in the area.

Came across this lovely chippy by pure accident. Had fish cooked for me and the chips were perfection. Quality in the bush.

Can't say much apart from this little picturesque square has everything you need unless you're looking for chain store goods.

Visited this little chippy twice over the half term period whilst staying nearby. It provides a traditional chippy menu without too many silly additional items, Holland’s Pies (always the best), freshly battered Cod and my fave battered sausages. Young lady doing the cooking always very welcoming and a bit of chit chat whilst you wait a few minutes for your order.

We called in on the off-chance having seen their sign on the main road and were not disappointed. The chips were some of the best I’ve ever had with a lovely crisp coating and fluffy inside and loads of crispy bits too. The sausage was cooked to perfection and staff friendly, helpful and quick. We will be back.

The Market Square Chippy may be small but it is big in service and great food!

Out walking in the Welsh hills on New Years Eve, hungry and wet spotted this lovely little traditional chip shop OPEN and quite a few in on New Years Eve. Great freshly made fish and chips, sausage butties for the kids, great stuff, great service & 10/10 for being open! (Nobody else was) thank you, we will be back next time passing.

Amazing proper chippy - pretty much in the middle of nowhere, nice and busy despite the rural spot - beautiful freshly battered cod - I tell you what if my local chip shop was even half as good as this I would be a happy man!

It is a quaint and historic place. A beautiful village with a tidy out look. Falous church and friendly folk in the area.

Went out of our way to visit this takeaway, but left without ordering so cannot comment on the food, The menu had nothing we wanted, they did not do pizzas (not even one!) and did not have any Indian food choices. They just did battered cod,scampi, pies, sausage, chicken, burgers etc - nothing we expected.

Consistently good chippy, good value meal deals , friendly young people doing the serving. Happy to sit outside on the benches watching the world go by.

Very good fish and Chip shop, we enjoyed our pie and chips and fish cake - service was friendly and quick. Only point is I like baked beans with my pie!, surely. Fish and chip shop should have them, I reccomend this should be sorted out.

Discovered this chippy on route to Snowdonia it provided beautifully boxed freshly cooked fish and chips at a very reasonable £6.00. Took them up to eat at the nearby Waterfall which was busy but a lovely spot.We intend to visit on our way back next week.

Have used this chippy for years and it is always spot on - cannot agree more with other positive reviews.Looks like one or two competitors (see below) have got a bit of a personal grudge going on here.My advice - check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Use this chippy throughout the Summer months (we stay at nearby caravan park). Beautifully freshly prepared Fish and Chips & quality tradiotiona, Hollands pies. Service is efficient & polite - always nice and busy at the weekend - cannot fault it.

Visited the chip shop to discover a moody miserable chip shop owner with no welcome. chips where greasy black and not cooked. One poor man walked out with his chip box dripping fat!! Raise your standards or sell up!!!

Recently bought an order of fish and chips from here under the recommendations from the website... I actually think the owner wrote most of the reviews because he obviously hasn't tasted his produce!? Me and my partner ordered a small fish and chips and another small portion of scampi and chips - both were swimming in grease! almost to the point it softened the cardboard to breaking point. Now, after using approximately 2 kitchen rolls soaking up the chip soup I had a nibble on the fish...and a nibble was all I could bare - it was tasteless to the point I actually questioned if that fish had even see the sea!! The owner should be ashamed to serve such poor quality of fish!Now with regards to the owner, I found his sense of humour just as tasteless as the food he serves. Sarcastic and arrogant is the best you will get out of this obnoxious man. All in all, my best advice for going to this chippy is starve than suffer!!

Teníamos pescado y patatas fritas anoche de aquí y la calidad de la comida era de primera clase. Mi hijo tenía picaduras de peces que eran trozos de bacalao rebozado recién agradable. Mi esposa tenía todo el bacalao que de nuevo fue maltratado, frescos y cocinados a la orden. Mi hija tenía un pie de largo que ella salchichas disfrutamos mucho. El único que me decepcionó fue que me pedí un pastel de carne. Fue muy bonito, pero del mismo tamaño que un pequeño pastel de cerdo. Tuve envidia algo de pescado! Yo tenía un par de pea buñuelos también que eran recién maltratada. Recomendaría este lugar para tomar pescado y patatas fritas como el servicio era bueno y la comida era buenísima. Evite el pastel si tienes hambre.

Greasy chip's small portion expensive.I could make better chip's than this MR happy guy , clearly he cannot cook chip's. why did he make is website so good and it be a disappointing chippy saying everything is fresh...... frozen is not fresh.

Was looking forward to coming here when I read all the amazing reviews but was very disappointed. Chips were pre-chipped and tasted like frozen chips plus the owner was miserable and rude. If people think they are amazing chips they really need to try the North West of England as they weren't a patch on ours.

Absolutely great fish, chips burgers. Best we have tasted in a long time, we were on holiday and wish we lived here, to visit chippy all the time. Worth a visit!

Had given up on take away food - but what a revelation here. This proper traditional shop cooks beautiful fresh cod in front of you, light crispy chips, not at all greasy - we sampled something called a 'Mushy Pea Fritter' which sounded bizarre but was actually astonishingly good. We are converted - we will be back.

This is without doubt the best Fish and Chip shop my family use, freshly prepared food, packaged neatly in biodegradable boxes with cutlery and napkins providerd.Excellent quality battered cod and crispy chips (no grease). Cannot recommend highly enough.

Overall not bad value for money as the fish and chips were ok for the price, but the trail of grease I left from the shop to and inside the car was immense, fortunately we had a roll of kitchen roll after an earlier picnic so was able mop up the car and wrap the box to avoid further spillage

If you are too tired to cook, or fancy a treat, this a great place to pick up fantastic portions and good quality food. If you are visiting the waterfall and been for a walk go and treat yourself at Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant chip shop.

In line with previous comments, this is a great little chippy, superb battered cod, crispy chips all nicely boxed. Be prepared to wait three or four minutes as they cook the fish to order rather than leave them lying around in a heater. Friendly young lady serving on for a bit of a chit chat - made a great addition to our holiday at nearby cottage. Thank You.

The fish is excellent, the chips are not! The owner is obnoxious, he is also the landlord of the pub 'The Plough' and he thinks he owns the village!

I've sampled many a chippy in my 45 years but this was easily the best with friendly staff who very obviously know what they're doing.The fish was tasty with crispy batter and the chips were also crispy and fluffy - like thrice cooked jobs at a gastropub. The peas were also very good - not often the case in my experience, and as a meal deal it was very good value.All very high quality, a surprising little gem.Thanks!

My family have been using this excellent little chippy for years, always feel welcomed, friendly chit chat with owner or staff member, wonderful lightly battered cod and freshly fried chips (always cooked fresh), packaged neatly in neat food boxes so the food stays fresh and hot in the car on the way home. Cannot Reccomend it highly enough.

Working around the area I frequently nip in for a fish and chip tea between my calls. On average I haven't been disappointed, but the only thing which stops my review from being higher is the trays they use. I like my curry or gravy over my chips and fish, the cardboard trays are nice to look at but not very practical as they are not liquid proof, so the gravy/curry/vinegar/grease soaks through the bottom of the trays, which I found out to my cost and the mess over my trousers. Also my last chips tasted of fish, so hope they don't use the same fat to fry the fish, but that may have just been a one off, but on the whole lovely crispy chips and fish lovely light batter. A popular eatery from visitors to the area as well as the locals, but not much else around the area to choose from, so no competition to keep them on their toes. Get polystyrene trays also.

I stopped here on the way through Wales to go to a festival and stumbled across it. The meal deals were really cheap, I paid £4.95 for sausage, chips, a lemonade and curry sauce and it was a very large portion. The sausage was beaut, the chips were sensational and the curry sauce was legendary. I can't recommend it enough.

We went to see Pistyll Rhaeadr and this village / chippy is where the dead end road to the waterfall starts. So, having seen the waterfall, we popped into the chippy. Very good value - the cod meal deal (huge cod, chips, a side and a drink - £5.95). Pie meal deal, £4.95. Sausage meal deal £3.95...so less than £15 for the 3 of us . . .. Chips were absolutely excellent. The cod was huge, very tasty. I personally wasn't over-impressed with the Pukka pie and wished I'd had cod ! The meals were served in boxes which made them easy to eat in the car which is what we did . . .

Had a couple of suppers here recently, very decent little chippy, a fiver for a good freshly cooked piece of cod with chips - all nicely boxed up with cutlery & napkins.Can't knock it.

Used this chippy a few times on family days out, never had anything that wasn't spot on, but highly Reccomend the great fresh cod, made fresh in front of you - always made very welcome, chit chat with the girls working the counter. They have Mushy Pea Fritters, new to me but they are a revelation.

Truly great chippy, use it once a week, worth the drive in for us, we enjoy sitting outside the shop watching the world go by eating our fish and chips. Service very friendly, the fish is fried perfectly in a light crisp batter, proper mushy peas - can't go wrong.

How lucky we are to have a quality chippy like this in Llanrhaeadr! We use it fairly regularly and the quality of the food is consistently high. The fish are a generous size, chips are good, and we are never disappointed. Recommended 100%.

This little chippy alongside genuinely great quality fish and chips is the on.y chippy I have ever been to that will batter you a footlong pork sausage - they are amazing, I had mine with fruity curry and chips. We regularly stop here and would highly recommend, always a friendly welcome and everything is cooked fresh in front of you.

I thought I didnt like F+C anymore as they were always dissapoiting, Soggy and greasy and not nice fish. Well call that off, its simple and uncomplicated and their foot long sauages look disgusting, but the fish and chips are always excellent and well worth a few minute wait while the fish is freshly cooked for you.

This little place offers great value and great quality Fish & Chips, we arrived just before close (9pm) on a Saturday as part of a cycling group, we were welcomed no problem and they stayed open for half an hour or so to make sure we were all looked after. The battered cod was light (not greasy) and served with proper mushy peas. All in all very impressed.

Very Tradittional chip shop in a lively old building, perfect crispy freshly battered cod and crispy chips - everything is cooked fresh in front of you, which is good to watch, my husband reckoned the short crust steak and kidney pie with proper mushy peas was heaven, my five year old was happy with her little fish & chips and can of VImto - this is a lovely little place in a beautiful location,

Super little chippy in the beautiful Welsh village of Llanrhaeadr, the food is cooked fresh, the service is friendly and quick and you will pay a fiver for a very generous portion of cod and chips with a fork and napkin. I think we have visited four times and it is consistently good.

Freshly cooked Huge Cod & Chips, crispy (non greasy) chips, have visited the village a few times, but missed out on the chippy - I won't next time, it was great, friendly young man doing the frying, napkins and forks provided and pleasant outdoor seating in the centre of the village square in the JUNE sunshine. You can't fault it!

Stayed locally, ate at the local pubs on Friday and Saturday, Sunday Evening picked up Supper to have at our holiday cottage from this great chippy, it's all good, but the chips are something to behold, tasty, light, no grease and cooked quickly and fresh. The cherry on the cake was the beguiling young woman doing the serving who lit up my evening!

We had a fish and chips for four people. The fish is freshly cooked for all customers and the portions were very generous. Served in a handy box, great!!

Super stop here in the Tanat Valley, great fish and chips but also proper suet steak and kidney pudding with heaps of chips and thick gravy (personally my favourite) at just £4.00. Always a friendly welcome here and always good fresh tasty food.

Tried this village chippy at the weekend, we only live a few miles away but hadn't really had cause to pass by until now. Lovely little place, impressed with the quality and the freshness of the Cod, the kids thought the chicken fillet burgers were on a par with KFC (which I suppose is a compliment) - only downside, no indoor seating - takeaway only.

This is a consistently brilliant little fish and chip shop, perfectly cooked crispy chips and beautifully done battered cod. Service is always friendly and fast, we have been using this chippy for a couple of years now and will continue to do so.

Regularly stop off here on a Saturday lunch time, great value fish and chips at a fiver, generous portions and nicely presented. Chips are 'double fried ' so nice and soft in the middle and crispy on the outside, lightly battered cod (non greasy ) and proper mushy peas. You can't go wrong!

Been several time since opened had fish & chips last week. The chips weren't cooked enough still raw to be honest , the Fish is a lot smaller than it used to be and greasy , shame as we won't rush back...

Stayed at nearby Waterfall (campsite). This chippy in the nearby village was a god send, almost ashamed to say, we ate there two nights out of three - it was just the job, excellent fish, chips and peas with a hot drink for under six quid.

A great find in the middle of nowhere, busy little chippy in a gorgeous building in mid wales very busy on a Friday night with mainly locals but the odd wandering tourist like us, freshly preloaded food, sensible prices and genuinely good humoured and friendly service from young man and asst. well worth the minor detour we took from the main road (look for the signs ).

Excellent little fish and chip shop in the Tanat Valley, quality food and very speedy and polite service, menu choices good and prices moderate. Staff were charming and friendly.

Smashing friendly chippy, nice people, nice food, free directions given with a smile. We enjoyed a Fish 'N' Chip picnic by the nearby waterfall on a Saturday afternoon. Location is a pretty welsh village with a fair bit going on. A good choice for a stop.

The locals are rather spoiled here! An absolute little cracker of a proper fish and chip shop in the middle of nowhere in beautiful North Wales, excellent fresh fish and quite frankly the best tasting chips I have ever had from a takeaway. It is worth the trip back just for the takeaway! We spoke to a small group of cyclists outside who plan their route to do just that (also decent Yorkshire Tea to takeaway). Well Done!

We have on several occasions had lovely fish and chips from this tiny fish and chip shop in Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant Wales. We can highly recommend you to visit this excellent fish and chip take away.

This is one of the best if not the best chippy, fantastic little place, open kitchen, everything cooked quickly and fresh in front of you. Some chippy's can be hit and miss - not this one though, consistent quality, friendly service - cannot fault it. When in the shop - there were other customers who had travelled in to the village just for visiting the chippy - that's pretty impressive.
