Awful Ordering through an open window which you need to duck under, cash only, signs everywhere to watch for sharp glass. Food over cooked tasteless, Chicken fried rice dark brown, over cooked, hardly any chicken, it had just opened food presented in 10mins no way this was cooked fresh. Chips looked and tasted like they had been cooked more than once, curry sauce hot but no flavour and for three simple dishes expensive. Will not be back ever.

We had a takeaway on New Year’s Day. Delivery was half an hour quicker than estimated, food arrived hot, amazing! Food was tasty: tasty ingredients, well cooked, meat was tender. We were really impressed with the all round quality for all the dishes, thank you!

Not been here in years, now it’s only a take away through an open window. Payment on site is cash only. Food we had was pretty dire, special curry was nothing special at all, some of the meat inside couldn’t even be chewed, Singapore chow mein was just about edible, best part of the meal was the egg fried rice. Most of it went in the bin unfortunately.

We love the food at the Mandarin but have yet to receive our food on time. When you place your order the estimated delivery time is usually over an hour but then that is always delayed so you end up waiting typically 1.5hrs!

Got the meal home to find half of one meal missing - one of the meals lid was not secured properly so when it was removed from the bag it spilt everywhere - now they’re not answering the phone. Very poor, unprofessional service. Disappointed is an understatement I’d like to give no stars but apparently that’s not possible - it may seem trivial but it’s ruined a family meal

He was told it was being bagged up and 25 mins later having stood on the cold had to request it again. I was very disappointed and we were not issued with a receipt having paid on line. The food was fine and I generally your food is the best around however extended the truth as you did and without proof of payment we were very I satisfied!!

We have just moved into Hilton and we heard this was basically the only Chinese in the village. Our meal cost of £39.00, this is seriously steep for 2 people...but we thought, if its good its worth it. We ordered for home delivery and were told "about an hour" - 2 hours later (and after 2 chaser phone calls" the food arrived. It was hot and looked nice. But after tasting it we were so disappointed, totally mediocre and neither of us finished our food. This cost us £39.00...and it was rubbish. NEVER AGAIN. Totally overpriced and not worth it - there is a cracking little Chinese in Etwall that we have now found and that is lovely food and value for money...the two of us eat there for around £17.00. ALLOT different to £39!

We decided to go to the Mandarin last night as we are local and our friends were bringing their children. It is more expensive than the one we usually go to ( by £5 each on the all you can eat) but as it's over in belper we didnt want to drag the kids out there. We booked over the phone and asked for a table with a spinning lazy susan so it was easier than everyone reaching over especially with children to which the lady said no problem. We arrived and were seated at a normal table rather than the 2 with lazy Susan's, when I asked the waitress she said we have parties with more adults than you so we're giving those tables to them..I was miffed but accepted it and sat down right under the heater which was like being in a sauna. When we arrived the place was empty as it was early which we had obviously chosen for a reason. So we got our order in, choosing the all you can eat for the adults and some separate dishes for the kids. This came within a reasonable time, the satay chicken was as hard as a rock but the rest of the food was fine. We ordered our second round and at this time the place had started to fill up with the staff running around like headless chickens as their only appeared to be 2 of them which did increase to 3 later on. We didnt recieve our second round of food for nearly 45 minutes after having to go and ask where it was! That comes out and the chicken is massively over cooked and the ribs were more cartilage than meat. We ordered some drinks and our third round of food when someone finally appeared and by this point it was already 9 o clock and the children were getting very restless. The 3rd round of food finally appeared, the sweet and sour chicken was rubbish, it was like kfc popcorn chicken covered in the sweetest sauce you've ever tasted. By this point we had had enough. One of our party explained how disappointed we were with the very slow service and mediocre food to which the waitress said she would speak to the management. The bill was then put down on the table which was incredible pricey and no sign of any gesture of good will not even a round of drinks knocked off and we all drank soft drinks other than 2 beers right at the start. Another member of our party questioned this and was told everyone was waiting so tough basically. I couldn't believe it, we arrived at 6.45 and didnt leave till 10 with 2 exhausted children and we werent even full! We may as well have not bothered with the all you can eat as we did not get our moneys worth! I will not be going back I dont care how local it is I'll make the journey to belper.

We went for the first time, it was a Thursday evening so didn't expect it to be busy and it wasn't we were the only people in the restaurant. Service was good, food was fresh and hot, made to order. The actual restaurant area is very basic and tired, with the curtains needing a wash. The all you can eat menu is cooked as you order but it was expensive for what it was and crispy duck isn't included in the menu. We left disappointed and feel there are much better Chinese restaurants in Derby.

My wife and I used to visit the Mandarin when my daughter lived around the corner in Hilton Thought then that the food was always good.My dad mentioned the other week that he hasn't had a Chinese for ages. He then seemed to have a bad takeaway experience and we think this was because he chose the wrong food. So we decided to take him out for his birthday and fathers day.We decided to have the banquet menu for £18.99 where you can have all you can eat with 5 choices initially and then add to that as you go on. So for starters we had crispy duck,, chicken satay skewers, pancake rolls & prawn toast. The food came and it was excellent, just what dad needed to introduce him back to the delights of Chinese food. All got eaten so then we chose our mains which again we decided to Davis between us.We ordered salt & chilli chicken, beef in szechuan sauce, pork in black bean sauce, fried rice & chips. Again after a short wait the food came and it was excellent. Staff were so attentive. My dad really enjoyed his birthday treat and could not get over the quality of the food. Excellent value too. I'm sure my dad will make a further visit to this restaurant. He's taken a takeaway menu home with him.My only detrimental comment about this restaurant is that it does need a makeover. It's looking a bit tired and in need of decoration. Apart from that an excellent evening out for my 84 yr old dad.

Had my second visit to the Manarin this weekend, a Chinese meal is something I really miss being Celiac, we found the restaurant on the internet advertising gluten free cake. I asked if they could guarantee gluten free, I was told that the wife/ chief was celiac so it would not be a problem.Been there twice now and the staff have a very good knowledge of celiac requirements, each time given good advice on what I can eat safely. The food is of a very good standard tastes superb I am very glad I found it. It's very difficult eating out especially Chinese which use a lot of gluten seasoning in sources etc, but I can recommend the Mandarin.

We have visited this restaurant for many years and always found the food and service of a very high standard, if expensive, but I'm afraid on our latest visit the quality was very poor. This became immediately apparent when taken to our table and we had a paper tablecloth. The whole establishment looked run down, a far cry from the last time we visited. The food which arrived very quickly, had obviously been pre-prepared and probably just heated in a microwave and was of a very mediocre quality. This was a disappointment and did not offer value for money. We noticed that the restaurant seemed to cater more for takeaways now, as a constant stream of cars came. We will not be returning anytime soon unless this once good Chinese restaurant improves.

Booked for youngest sons birthday - 8 people in total-the food was of excellent quality and the initial service was very good (for starter and main course) but as the evening got a little later 9.45pm approx a lot of the staff seemed to disappear and with it went the good service. To such an extent that the my eldest went to find someone to see where the 'puddings' were as we could see no staff within the dining area. My advice would be to eat a little earlier . Believe it or not this did not spoil the evening as the food made up for the slowing of the service.

We visited this restaurant with one other couple. We had a set menu and the food was nice although priced at the higher end for a Chinese restaurant. What at first was a little irritating and became intrusive was the poor service.About 5 minutes after receiving our first course, with food on everyone's plates and still in the dishes we were asked "all finished?". We clearly weren't.This was repeated by the same waiter, then a different waitress on the second course. When finally conceding the last course was actually over we asked for the bill and waited; for 20 minutes. If there was a full house at this point rather than just us and one other table I could have understood. We finally grabbed our coats and went to the entrance where 3 staff were standing waiting at the desk. Those of us not paying the bill left without being wished goodnight or thanked for coming. If you like this sort of evening then this the place for you otherwise they do a takeaway service that was doing a roaring trade...

I had a Singapore Chow Mein as a takeaway some time ago which wasn't particularly good, but not wanting to form an opinion on such a fleeting experience, tonight we had a full meal for two. It wasn't a good experience unless you are fond of boiled chicken in the curry and the Kung Po chicken. Personally I have never seen Kung Po Chicken previously that isn't in batter and deep fried before being added to the sauce etc. Whichever, it was extremely 'jellified' to coin a phrase. The curry sauce was bland, runny and anaemic with 'jellified' chicken. The Singapore Chow Mein was also below average. I'm afraid the restaurant flyer has gone in the bin with the remainder of the meal.

Having read the good reviews on here, me and the other half thought we would give the buffet option a try. After initially being sat on a family table next to the window which was a bit drafty, we politely asked to move to a table for 2 opposite, which the young man serving had no problem with. Then we were approached by the chinese lady who seemed very forceful in getting us to return to the previous table. The 1st hiccup was when the prawn crackers were bought to our table and knocked off by the waiter all over the floor, and were not replaced. When the starters arrived, both of us were amazed at the poor quality of the food. It can only be described as tasting worse than a back street kebab shoo. The chicken wings were what you would expect in one too. We thought the main course would surely make up for this. When the main course arrived it was even worse than the starters. Along with a second round of drinks which the chinese waitress spilt all over the table to then just laugh and walk away. The only half decent part of the main course was the chilli salt chicken, and when we tried to order more of this having left some of the other dishes as the chicken tasted 'off', the lady tried to refuse us as she thought we wouldn't eat it. I explained that we were still hungry as we didn't really like the other dishes and she then said with a huff that she would do us a small portion. I have never received service like this in my life. I did try to say when paying that I was not happy with the food/service and she again just started laughing. Her attitude was appalling and has left us both returning home hungry and appalled.

My wife and I had a meal at this restaurant while visiting our son who lives and works in Derby. It had been recommended to our son by a work colleague. It is a little off the beaten track near the village of Hilton about 6 miles from Derby but well worth a visit. It looked like the building had once been a country pub. We went on a Sunday evening but it was still quite busy with a family group and several other couples. Theere was a very warm welcome from who we assumed was the owner and we were quickly seated and given menus. Service was quick and efficient with a very wide range of dishes including Thai. We stuck to Chinese and were not disappointed. We would say that it was one of best Chinese meals we have had outside China Town in London (and perhaps could beat a few of those too!). We will certainly go there again when we are next in Derby.
