Mama Masala in Derry

Mama masala seems like the biggest India restaurant in London Derry. The restaurant ambience and service is great but the food is close to good. They make the food spicy and maintain the taste levels of food in India, but there is something missing in their food. Could be the food needs a little more flavour. We got - Poori channa - Mysore Aloo bonda - Paneer Vindaloo - Daal Tadka - Pulav rice

Booked on line for a Friday night no problem. Exterior doesn't look spectacular but once inside everything was great. Great, quick service and lovely food was just what we needed.

Food used to be better years ago. Still OK but not as mindblowingly good as it was.

It was a good experience when we took the regular menu, the buffet was a disappointment TBH.

2 hours for delivery cold food no chips, vegetarian meal with chicken just about sums this place up

Great food, loads of parking, great service, and AMAZING value. Will be back. Would recommend to anyone looking for a tasty Indian or Italian meal, beautiful food.

A bit unlikely looking from outside, and we weren’t sure what to expect, as they offer both Indian and Italian cuisine. Inside there was no sign of anyone seeking Italian food & it’s flat out Indian. We had booked our table which proved a good idea, as come 7 o’clock, there was hardly a spare seat. Nice varied menu, good service, and everything kept rolling out in spite of being crowded. Must mention the music soundtrack, which has an ‘80’s disco vibe. It’s a bit overbearing, even in the toilets, and you don’t expect Abba, Boney M & the Bee Gees as background to your Indian food! Still, it’s rated as No 1 Indian restaurant in the City, and no surprise, as we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Get your glad rags on and grab a seat.

I had a fantastic experience at Mama Masala! The flavors in the food were exquisite, offering a delightful taste. The staffs (especially the guy from Delhi) service was impeccable, adding to the overall enjoyment of the meal. Highly recommend!

The atmosphere when you walk in is electric, the music is a buzzing mix of old school classics. The service is very attentive and polite without being in your face or over the top, very understated. Staff are very good at their job....we met Lucy tonight a polish girl who was a great server and a lovely girl. The boys are all fantastic too. Food was just first class as always we had poppadoms with selection of toppings complementary, onion bhajis and chicken poor starters, then a mix of chicken makhani, chicken jalfrezi, and chicken balti, with a selection of pilau rice, naan bread and chips....everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. We had drinks with dinner, then had a few cocktails and digestifs, we were complemented three sambucas at the end of our meal which was a lovely touch. Thank you guys, can't wait to get back!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

We called in for a meal on Friday evening 24th November. We ordered our food and I said to the waiter could you make a note that I have a nut allergy. He replied "oh you have a nut allergy, we can't serve you". I couldn't believe my ears, he then went on to explain that all there tubs of ingredients in the kitchen say "may contain traces of nuts" I explained everything does as a precaution, but unless it specifically says it has nuts or you if you add nuts directly to the dish, then I'm happy with that. He replied 'no our chef refuses to cook for nut allergy people so you will have to leave'. In this day and age to turn people away because you can't accommodate a customer with an allergy is absolutely unacceptable and unprofessional.

Best Indian restaurant at Derry. Keep it up guys!

Had checked out v positive Tripadvisor reviews and visited circa sixish on a Monday eve during a short break to lovely Derry. Noticed a strong, sour smell inside entrance but my husband, at that point didn’t! We decided to go ahead but my husband stopped halfway up the carpeted stairs - sour smell was overwhelming - also noticed glass entrance door straight ahead was heavily finger marked - assume someone has been sick on carpet!! Remove carpet and mats please your food sounds great but not willing to take chance Went to local Mandarin and Ab Fab

Food was amazing, the atmosphere was great as it wasn't too busy on the night we were in... If I could give service a 10* I would as the staff couldn't have done anymore or been more attentive. Complimentary poppadoms were lovely, can't wait to return.

We randomly found the place in nearby restaurants and went there. The place had a good ambience and the staff were very friendly. The taste of the food was good. But the biryani was not that great. Would recommend the place.

Naan and Curry items are really good here.

Ok, I'm not a big lover of curries, spicy food, etc and so I wasn't eager to try Indian cuisine. But tonight's meal was unbelievably good! I had the chicken tikka masala and i was so happy! Others in our group had pizza, monkfish, and a few appetizers. No one was disappointed. The price was reasonable. The best part, however, was how friendly were the staff. I can't wait to go back.

Had the early bird Indian menu. Food was delicious, service was good.

We.only ever ordered take away from here but tonight we went in for a meal......absolutely beautiful food, and the staff are so friendly and helpful explaining things on the menu, nothing was a bother to them....we will definitely be back 🙂

Indian food is great in this place. Early bird / week day offer menu is superb. Quality grub, excellent value, very attentive service, beautiful views. Can't fault it

I had a great experience at Mama Masala for a hen party that I organised. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating of the large group. The food and drinks were delicious. The staff set up balloons and decorations that we had brought for the hen and it all looked great - thanks all at Mama Masala. Definitely recommend 😀

This was my first time visiting Mama Masala. We had two pasta dishes and it was delicious. We had a bit of a wait for our food, however, the server was very apologetic and gave us free drinks on the house. I thought this was a very nice touch. We will definitely be back!

Everything OK. Great food and super kind service. Only point is that lamb korma should have more pieces of lamb. But It is indeed delicious.

Very good food, adequate prices and the service was great. It was pretty empty when we came so we got good seats at the window with the river view. Only thing that killed a star was the music choice and the fact that the connected phone got called and the callers whole number was said through the speaker. Other than that, really recommandable restaurant!

Delicious. Our table enjoyed a number of Indian dishes and they were all really well done. We sat near the window and the view of the river in the evening light was lovely.

Felt racially abused by blonde girl working there. I have called 3 times and she didn’t turn up as same as other waitresses. She said that she is coming so I didn’t called anyone after that. She was free and going on tables where locals were sitting. I have to wait for almost 10 mints to call someone else and finally someone took my order.

My family and I have been great fans of mama masala for years and regularly have large parties here (15 people or so) for birthdays etc. However we went here for my 30th birthday dinner in January and it was a fiasco... We had my 2 year old daughter with us so booked early for 6.30pm. By 8.30pm we still had no food... our glasses from drinks were piling up on the table and not being cleared, then finally when the food arrived the rice was cold and had to be sent back. I understand there was most likely an issue with staffing and I do feel for the staff that were there, but it was a really frustrating evening and I wouldn't be rushing back. My family had even arranged for a birthday cake to be brought out, however we ended up just asking for the cake back as it was too late at this point (10pm). On the plus side my daughter's food did come out fairly quick so she wasn't waiting like us, but expecting a 2 year old to sit in a restaurant happily for nearly 4 hours... not realistic.

Omg what service was that very slow rude not attentive we got drinks after 30mins the food was lovely will say that but waited almost an hour our server was an older man looked like the supervisor but would take oreders with zero concentration . The bill took almost 40mims to get to the table after constantly asking for it . Only way im going back there if its take out .

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the restaurant. Celebrating a family Birthday and weren't disappointed. Food excellent. Would definitely call again.

That’s the last time! Takeaway bhuna with rice and Peshawari Nan. Sauce was basically red with some spices, chicken was bone dry. How can an Indian restaurant make a disaster with pillau rice! It’s was lumps of congealed greasy rice. Peshawari Nan was frankly a chapati with some coconut thrown in a slit. If was already out on a plate or I’d have taken it back, in reality I couldn’t be bothered going out again. I’ll never cross that door again, too many times the food has been sub standard. Sadly we only have 3 Indian restaurants in Derry, so they don’t have to try too hard. This place wouldn’t last a week in Glasgow

Amazing Indian food with plenty of vegetarian options. The staff was very friendly and service was excellent. All the dishes tasted delicious and the spice levels were to our expectations. Would definitely recommend.

My favourite Indian restaurant but needs improvements. I am a frequent customer here but I find the blonde waitress has poor customer service, quite forgetful & lacking in friendliness. I order the same meal everytime as it’s my favourite curry & yet the wrong one came out & had to send it back, she never approached us to apologise as my husband’s meal went cold waiting for the correct order to come back so all in we waited 50 mins to eat. It took 10 mins before anyone even came to offer us a drink. No one offered dessert & forgot our water. Unfortunately we are unlikely to return, there are no gluten free options. When the popadoms are served I have to sit empty handed because there is nothing I can have. There are plenty of people in Derry who are celiac, this restaurant should research & update their menu. Food & drink is beautiful however.

Went to mama masalas on the 17th March 2023 for my partners birthday meal. It was amazing they always make u feel welcome and the owner always comes over to c how u r. Everytime we come to derry we always eat there and will always go back

We went here on Saturday night as a couple. We didn’t have a booking but they fitted us in. All the staff were very friendly and obliging. The food was excellent and we would definitely return and would recommend.

Indian food is decent if not exceptional and is good value.

Good curry but maybe a bit expensive at ~£15 a go (curry did include a side of rice/chips/naan though). Peshwari naan and chickpea curry were really good. It was busy when we went but service was still quick, would like to revisit for lunch so we could enjoy the view of the river

Dinner was delicious- ordered the korma. They forgot the naan we ordered but it wasn't long to we got it. Service was mixed- depending on who was serving a few things needed propmted. The girl who took our payment was very nice

I have changed my review due to the excellent and helpful customer service from Cathryn; thank you. Food lovely but our order arrived by delivery in 2 sections, 25 minutes apart as they forgot to put in the pizza. Pizza was cold on arrival and we ate separately due to delivery issue. Thought that they may have sent a fresh one and not one which was sitting getting cold for half an hour. Disappointing

Bad experience on Friday 30 December! It was busy but it took half an hour to even be asked if we wanted a drink! It came eventually. Decided to order onion bhaji but got popadums as well as it was so long to wait for food! Hot plates came and were told that main course was coming. Unfortunately plates were cold by the time food arrived and it was not even warm!! My chicken Bhuna had more onions than actual chicken, my husband’s achari was not good either and our sons Indian dish wasn’t very hot.

Had mutton biryani and its very spot on. My other half had the hot dish curry and it’s taste sooo good and quite hot too which he likes. Definitely will be back!

Ordered takeout from here during a recent stay in Derry. Food was very good but some of the dishes were a bit light on chicken. Sauces tasty; overall we enjoyed the food and thought it was fairly reasonably priced. Online ordering was easy and convenient too.

The new buffet we had tonight was delicious and the service was as usual very professional and attentive. Always enjoy this restaurant.

Best food in Derry! Every dish we ate here was absolutely delicious. All the ingredients tasted fresh, and expertly combined with the right herbs and spices for an authentic flavour that clearly didn't come from a jar. 👌 Despite being very busy, staff checked with us regularly, and fulfilled any and all requests. Cannot wait to go back!

Well, Two stars came due to waiter and stewardess nothing else. First thing is - staircase to climb up gives you the feeling of October Halloween experiences smells bad and screechy. We had given table to big group to feel nice and noisy so you don’t speak, just listen to your table next to you. We have ordered starter - Bad idea puri Very big breakfast size puri in India with chickpeas - green peas Masala make you to feel full up. Popudums with 3 different flavor of chutney mostly sweet sauces stay away diabetics Main course menu We have got shaslic panner came in a sizzler looking good - taste wise 50-50 appearance zero. Alu sag - worst choice I have ever made. Alu sag too many potatoes mostly boiled and no flavor and sag was not blended with any flavor or whatsoever , probably chef thought to cook easy so he might have added potatoes- tomato chutney and spinach together with reachable spices and send it as huge portion forgetting that there is a taste in food and need to have some feeling. We got rice for the alu saag - disaster Too old rice and cooked with lots of oil. Probably someone in their family has oil connection. And nan bread. Very old or too much time in tandoor came out like brick. Long story short Mama Masala has no feeling other than wait staffs

Very authentic Indian food in Londonderry / Derry. One of our favorite place. This place will provide many delicacies like biriani, curries and Indian starters like samosa and puri.

Very disappointed ......told them when I booked this was special evening for my parents 65th wedding anniversary when we went in table wasn't even ready. They had a party of 40 booked in which took precedence over everything and everyone else sorry but we weren't getting our food for free we were paying customers too. Food was OK nothing special sorry for poor review but I chose this because i read the reviews which all seemed to be great but our experience was anything but.

So just been here, won't be back probably most expensive indian I've been to. Not great service, not great food, 1 drink each 3 meals £85. Lighting not good had to use torch from phone. Told couldn't sit at window seat as there was a booking,someone else came in not booked but sat at window seat,not a big deal but hey why say we couldn't. Ordered drinks not brought had to ask again. No dip for pakora, poppadoms soft not crispy (stale) Kinda think I've said enough. Would avoid in future. Extremely expensive for what it was

Look, there's no coherent theme (it's just two separate menus, Italian and Indian) and the cocktails aren't great. But I used to live in Jersey City, where there's a huge Indian community, and I found this place that sold paneer pizza and then when I moved I couldn't find it for YEARS. And this place has a good pizza oven and was willing to put paneer on pizza with spicy madras sauce and it's SO good (Methi Paneer was good too). It sounds stupid but it's delicious and made me really nostalgic. A+, would eat here again.

Excellent service from all as soon as we entered. Emma looked after us and was lovely. Maitre'd was also very attentive and made some very good suggestions for those in the party that may not frequent so often. Cobra on tap. Can't go wrong there. I always read the lowest reviews before I go somewhere and the guys slagging this place off must have have COVID as their taste buds are fecked (or they smoke) Top restaurant and definitely will be back before heading back to Oz.

We came here for our anniversary, I can say from start to finish the service and food were exceptional, we where greeted with complimentary champagne as it was booked for our anniversary, very cosy feeling and brilliant view of the foyle at night inside the restaurant. We always order takeout from here also and the standard is always amazing and authentic and fresh prepared food.
