Kirkwall Hotel Restaurant in Orkney Islands

We called in for lunch on a visit to Kirkwall. Very friendly staff and a good choice of meals, with good sized portions. A little pricey but worth it for the food and pleasant surroundings.

Last visit was 14yrs ago, and our our latest visit did not disappoint. Our initial impression was questionable as we arrived 10min before our booking and were questioned about being too early - our table was ready but no menu was provided until our booked time.... This apart, the service was good and the food was top-notch: fresh monkfish was superb and the roast beef was top quality and large in size! Overall, was great value and an ideal setting to go for a highlight meal of your tip - would thoroughly recommend (but book in advance as is very busy)!

Very busy Saturday night in the restaurant but service was good. Grimbister cheese starter was great and the monkfish was fresh and delicious. Too full to sample the desserts but they looked good on the next table!

Had a lovely evening enjoying local freshly prepared food. The place where a quite busy. We emailed to secure a reservation. They have 100 whiskeys for the whisky lovers. We had the Beef and Guinness pie. It came with chips and vegetables. Our friends had the fish and chips. Like everywhere they are understaffed. The servers were friendly and attentive and set our expectations on when we would be served, which we appreciated. Desserts looked amazing but we were too full.

We ate here a few years ago and this was our favourite place to eat in kirkwall, we were disappointed to find that standards have slipped since then, The food was average at best, bland and uninspiring not a patch on what it was on previous visits. I had the Ribeye steak and somehow it was dry and bland, the peppercorn sauce too was tasteless and as thin as water. The service too was poor, slow and felt amateurish, we were seated and waited around 25 minutes for our order to be taken, then another 20 minutes for our staters. Such a shame as this used to be our go to restaurant in Kirkwall, Sadly we can con longer recommend nor will we rush to return.

Dinner was a bit disappointing. I had the pork (good), included roast potatoes, carrots (both overcooked) broccoli (underdone), Yorkshire pudding (stodgy) and gravy (thick brown glue drenched over everything). My friend had the burger which she wasn't impressed with, although she said her chips were good. We decided not to have a dessert as felt that too would be disappointing. Staff were helpful and friendly.

We came here for food! Food was amazing, portion sizes were massive! Very flavoursome meals. Nice, clean restaurant. Staff excellent, will definitely be back!

Really nice meal in a pleasant setting. The staff were very polite and helpful and they went out of their way to ensure we had all we needed. The lunch menu was great with plenty of traditional Orkney foods. I had the island burger which was really nice. I recommend for a lovely meal in a pleasant setting!

We had tried to find other hotels but they were all fully booked. The Kirkwall dining room was full, but they found space for us in the bar in a few minutes. The bar had regular tables so was just fine with us. I had the scallop souffle which was broiled scallops with a cheese souffle on the side. Both were excellent. So were the cheese fritters and cheese plate. You might think that's a lot of cheese for one meal, but each was different and very tasty. Service was very friendly and prompt. The decor is relaxing. Prices were quite good given the quality. One of my best meals in Scotland.

The menu looked interesting. The service was amateurish and chaotic. We wanted to order wine, took time to get someone to serve us. There was a vegetarian menu on the site but there was hardly anything of it (we had three vegetarian who left hungry).. We ordered the seafood platter. We got boiled tasteless seafood with a lemon. When asked if we could get a sauce, mayo or anything to accompany this tasteless platter, we were served a hot steak sauce and were charged £2.50 on top of the £42.95 price of the platter. The salad was a tasteless mixture of salad leaved and boiled potatoes. The potatoes were covered with mayo.

Food is average, bar has a nice selection. Staff are young and undertrained. Found a hair in my mains. The server told me that it was from a brush (presumably from a pastry brush?) Was surprised to see I was still charged for the dish. Wouldn’t recommend, won’t be returning. There’s better food very close by.

The four of us had a most enjoyable meal on a Sunday evening. After starting off with very friendly and helpful service in the Highland Bar, we moved into the restaurant and were served in a very timely manner even with a large group in the restaurant. The choices on the menu suited all of us. The scallop soufflé was delicious with the scallops absolutely melt-in-your-mouth good. It was a treat to have the roast of the day which was lovely tender pork. Would have loved dessert too but just didn't have the room.

Got off to a bad start. Was seated at the table and asked if we would like a drink. Told of the specials and what they didn’t have. Given the food menus, no drink or wine menu, then forgotten for the next 15 minutes. Ordered and asked for the other menus. The gin was asked for with a dash of lemonade and it came drowned in it. The wine came and was simply dumped on the table, not asked if we wanted it poured etc. starters was French onion soup which was good and a scallop soufflé. The scallops were well over cooked. We ordered a sharing main course of seafood and you would have got better at most seaside kiosks. Dry mussels, overcooked scallops, no finger bowl and 1 small pre packaged hand wipe for 2 people. Plates clear and no ask if we wanted a dessert menu. After about 10 minutes someone came up with a notepad and asked if everything was okay. Asked for dessert menu. Ordered the dessert of a cheeseboard and strawberry assiette. The cheeseboard was fine except for the most disgusting dry chutney. The strawberry assiette was not good at all. It had a green liquid in a cup, a strawberry tart which was a custard tart with an old strawberry cut into 4. Overall an experience we will not repeat and will tell our friends to avoid. The quickest part of the service was the bill to card machine. At £127 for the experience and no tip left.

A group of us ate at the hotel for several days and some meals were fine but others were well below standard. My friends ordered pork one evening and it was dry and you could not cut it with a knife. Another night I had the hamburger and it was tough and inedible. Others enjoyed their meals.

Really good food and a friendly service. They were really helpful. Place looked great had a nice atmosphere . The portions are quite large.

From breakfast to lunch and dinner every meal was great. Whether it was in the restaurant itself or in the bar, the food and the staff make it worthwhile. Even the soup :)

Very impressed with the interior design, elegant but modern. Excellent food and great service. Good value for money too. Despite being extremely busy, food arrived in good time and all servers had time for us. Would highly recommend.

The Kirkwall Hotel oozes atmosphere, with its high ceilings and bookshelves; it's a bit pricey, though, but the portions are huge.

Lovely welcome. Service was good, staff friendly and helpful and the dining room itself is beautiful to look at. We had cod with saffron rice and a delicate curried sauce, perfectly cooked. Our starters were squid (delicious) and crab doughnuts (different and very tasty)

Had a great meal in the Kirkwall Hotel, on a very bust Sunday evening, service was excellent, wonderful attentive staff, reasonably priced, although I did baulk at the £999 a dram whisky on offer!

With the country under lockdown the hotel was the only place to get an evening meal. There was a reasonable selection to choose from and the food was delicious. The service was attentive and it could not be faulted. Lovely meal.

Had difficulty getting a table for dinner but once I was in it was worth it . Limited menu ordered via a tick list but roast lamb was tasty . Service fantastic and they all worked as a team which was impressive. Even the guy on reception lent a hand . Would recommend.

Used the hotel for take away food. They currently have a limited take away menu at reasonable prices.Covid precautions are clearly stated & followed. visited for dinner on our 2 night holiday. hubby had lamb and said it was delicious. Well it is a long time since I had to tick a piece of paper in restaurant for my food it was almost a return to school dinners. Menu was poor guess they are trying to pile them in to take advantage of 50 % government deal and doing it very badly. The starter was smoked salmon and frankly was thrown together in 30 seconds on top of three croutons basic level preparation. Steak pie gravy watery and tastless. Sweet potato and tomato soup no taste of sweet potato and over powered by tomatoes and split!! Now this maybe as they are trying to pile in as many people as possible during the offer period but 14 years coming to this hotel and this is by far the worst meal I have ever had here. Other hotels in orkney have the offer on and meals have been amazing they are putting quality over quantity and are streaks ahead of the Kirkwall. Kirkwall we have visited you for 14 years and had excellent meals not this time you really need to get your act together others have adapted very well to the current epidemic you have not

Lovely surroundings pleasant staff limited menu thought it was quite expensive for what we had feel your paying more for the surroundings but the food was nice.

We had the pleasure of dining at the Kirwall Hotel Restaurant on a recent tour of the Orkney Islands. Location was convenient, restaurant and hotel were both beautiful. The dinner menu was quite varied and did not disappoint. Had delicious seared scallops, a lovely duck breast that was roasted to perfection. Wine list was perfect and the Sticky Toffee Pudding cannot be missed! Thank you for a delicious meal in a fabulous venue.

Had a lovely meal, food was excellent and entertain was top notch! A brawl took place in the neighbouring bar (skippers)! Only down side was the door through to the bar was shut during this event and we missed what happened next!

My spouse and I were on a tour of the north of Scotland after a visit to England. We were dismayed by the large number of chain restaurants all over England and in Edinburgh. We had many so-so meals and were done with deep fried food. Orkney is different. You won’t find American chain restaurants there. We arrived late into Kirkwall but managed to get a table at the Kirkwall Hotel restaurant. We had no expectations but were seated quickly and met our friendly server. My wife and I like to play cards while we travel so had the cribbage going when our scallops appetizer appeared. The game stopped while we enjoyed the perfectly prepared local mollusks. My entree was a steak and ale pie while my spouse had the salmon. Both were great examples of creative use of local ingredients. The pie was superb with a savoury filling and delightful puff pastry on top. We had such a great time eating, playing and chatting with our server that we pretty much closed the place down! The Kirkwall comped us a bottle of Prosecco if we were to come back so we did. The bar is excellent at the Kirkwall as well and I enjoyed many tasty local beers and some fine whiskys. I had the monkfish and my wife had the lamb dinner the second night. Both were excellent if not as draw droppingly good as what we had the first night. Another note is that the service was good. I am from Canada and used to good service in restaurants because restaurant staff are paid so poorly they rely on gratuities to survive; they often crank up the service and I compensate accordingly. In the UK, table service isn’t universal and where it is provided, it’s usually not up to the standard North Americans are used to. At the Kirkwall, the service was friendly and great. The staff we dealt with seemed to be happy in their work. We met the manager and the chef and they seemed kind and on the ball so perhaps that’s the difference. Happy travels.

Very helpful staff, unfortunately the food is not quite up to scratch. Good menu and presentation, but possibly trying to be something it’s not? Also too expensive for the quality of the food and surroundings.

2 weeks into our trip. First mistake. It was to be a “special meal for a special event”. Not!Fish dish was fine. Orkney rib eye steak wasn’t. Very small and amazingly thin. Ordered medium rare. Arrived lightly seared and raw. I know I should have sent it back. Also came with fries and a container of gravy?A local couple we had met earlier had suggested that Orkney beef was great. Well not hereWhen asked how everything was. I complained. They comped our cappuccino.

The food was fine but nothing to get too excited about. My wife ordered terrine which stated with Melba toast. However no Melba toast arrived, when we asked the waitress where the toast was , her reply was you only get a little bit anyway. The roast beef was lovely but there must be a shortage of vegetables In Orkney !!

We did stop here for meals every time we were in Kirkwall, lunch was ok. We booked for an evening meal and the meal was a complete let down, won’t be back. Shame because we’ve been going for years.There are plenty other lovely restaurants close by.

Wij hebben niet in het hotel zelf gegeten maar in de inpandige pub/restaurant. Het was hier prima toeven qua eten en drinken tegen redelijke prijzen. Het is een modern ingerichte pub/restaurant met een 4 tal TV,s waarop sport wordt vertoond. Bediening is vlot en vriendelijk.

Excellent from start to finish.We booked a few hours before we wanted to eat and were accommodated even though they were busy. Food was delicious and service at a leisurely pace.Salmon cooked perfectly and hubby enjoyed his steak & ale pie. We shared a dessert of soufflé & it was quite memorable. We had a lovely bottle of Shiraz for £18...bargain price for a hotel!Would definitely recommend.

Had lunch as part of a business meeting . There was little acknowledgement to our presence & service was slow. We had soup (which was very nice) - the waiter had to ask what type though - & sandwiches. Water was presented at our table but we weren't asked if further drinks were required - constantly had to ask rather than being offered.

Me and my with and our friends visited the Kirkwall Hotel for our evening meal. I had haggis and potatoes, my wife had rib-eye steak, my friend chose the same as my wife and I. One of the steaks had to be taken back to the kitchen to be heated up. My friend wasn’t happy at all as this restaurant had been recommended by someone. He won’t be going to this place again

Excellent roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. Great price, friendly service. Best to make a reservation. Relaxed, laid-back atmosphere with lovely big windows facing the harbor. I loved it.

6 people, 1 vegitarian, all were happy with their starters, mains, drinks and desserts. Everything would have been perfect... if there wouldn't have been 1 specific member of the serviceteam, who managed to mishear lemonade for whitewine, forget to note all starters, didnot remove dishes in time, remove full classes, and topped all of that with unfriendly behaviour.

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The food was delicious and the service for both the accommodation and restaurant was very efficient and friendly. Highly recommended especially if you get a bigger room overlooking the harbour.

Det var virkelig dejlig laks og monkfisk, men fisken havde måske fået en anelse for meget, men det var yderst delikat. Servicen var derimod, meget bagud. Først fik vi ikke noget kort med drikkevarer, derefter ventede vi 20 minutter på at bestille drikkevarer, vores nabo fik deres forret, inden de fik vinkortet. Andre borde sad og ville gerne betale, medens tjenerne gik og dækkede bord til morgenmad, nogen af dem med hvide handsker, andre uden. Der var ingen der spurgte om vores tomme glas skulle fyldes op. Vi bad om menukort til dessert, og måtte selv finde en tjener der havde lyst til at tage mod bestilling. Desserten, blev bare plantet på bordet og så var han væk. Vi fangede en anden tjener der fortalte hvilke lokale oste det var vi fik serveret, samme med 4 købe kiks. Maden var så god så vi nok kommer igen, trods alt.

Despite initial appearances, the restaurant within Kirkwall Hotel provided a great dinner and charming service. We racked up a fairly large bill, but overall, it represented good value. As with other Kirkwall establishments, booking ahead is essential.

We spent one afternoon alternating between the regally decorated bar and the scenic outdoor seating. Ewan provided exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable recommendations about local drinks. We enjoyed it so much that we booked dinner for a different day. Dinner in the dining room was equally pleasant, from lamb to salmon to pasta. There’s also a pub attached, so all your bases are covered! Definitely recommend that you stop by when you’re in Kirkwall.

Good service. Nice surroundings. But poor vegetarian choice. In fact no choice. A breaded cheese dish, a bigger version of the starter.

A big crowd of us, set menu, but dealt well with pre-warned allergies/aversions. Haggis starter, roasted salmon fillet with excellent vegetables, local Orkney ice cream. Great staff, good atmosphere, good food.

We stopped here for dinner after a long day of touring. The service was pleasant but quite slow. We eventually had to request our bill as did the table next to ours. The restaurant was extraordinarily hot and it was uncomfortable to eat in. Eventually, they cracked a window but it did little to help the temperature. The food was ok; I ordered the roast beef but did not get the promised Yorkshire pudding with it. There was some problem with them in the kitchen. Overall, the experience was fine but nothing to rave about.

We tried most of the restaurants in Kirkwall (including the Foveran) and the best food we had was here. Scallops were excellent.

Went for a family meal on Sunday 13th July. All had a brilliant meal. Food well presented hot and service was excellent. Good choice and well priced.

This is an ideal venue to retreat to on a wet or windy evening to enjoy local drought beers and an immense range of whiskies and gins. The decor, sofas and bookshelves are excellent

The restaurant setting is nice, with a touch of old times. The food was good We had the cheese bites, the souffle, the butternut squash and to end the sticky toffee pudding. The service had some lacks. They were quite slow to take the food and I ordered some sparking water, ask for it several times and they brought it some bites before finishing the main course. They were kind though and made me not pay for it. In general the restaurant is nice, maybe the price is a little bit too high, but you're on the Kirkwall's marina.

The bar area is lovely and has recently been renovated. We had a few drinks. The bartenders were friendly and engaging and a lot of fun to talk to. We didn't try any of the food. But would definitely recommend the bar!

When the meals finally arrived, they did not enticing descriptions on the menu. Main course roasted butternut squash for c £14 consisted of three small slices of unseasoned tasteless squash, one tiny stem of broccoli, one teaspoon of tasteless cauliflower, one chip sized slice of parsnip and three halves of hard new potato. The promised beetroot puree amounted to a smear on the plate of c 1/4 of a teaspoon, which though effective as decoration, added no flavour whatsoever. I would have not have paid even £5 for this as a side of vegetables. The roast lamb was fine for quality of meat, but the gravy was extremely salty and the portions were miniscule. The roast duck was good in quality, but again the portions were miniscule.

We went there for lunch on a noraml wet and windy Kirkwall day, it was quiet but the restaurant looked lovely, with comfotabe seats. Pleanty to choose on the menu, good prices and lovely food. It's just a shame we didn't get back there for an evening meal.

The hotel entrance is frankly a little dilapidated, but the bar and restaurant (both quite large) have been done up in an attractive, well-thought-out way. We had chosen the Kirkwall for our Sunday meal as the menu included a choose of roasts. Both the beef and lamb roasts were very acceptable.
