Jolly Fryer in Maldon

Lovely quick service and a nice full menu to choose from. Fish was fresh and tasted great. Chips were OK. Curry sauce was not fresh so would avoid. Would definitely visit again however as the price was great.

I visited Burnham-on-Crouch and the Jolly Fryer was recommended for the best fish & chips, I can only say AMAZING!! The young lad behind the counter was so friendly polite and very courteous .... I will definitely revisit if I'm ever back in the town.

Although the service was good and we were refunded quickly and with no problems having complained, I wish I could have given 5 stars for the quality of the food. We ordered two cod and chips and both portions, the chips were dry and the cod was dry. No moistness whatsoever. We may have just persevered but I don't know what oil these were fried in but the taste was disgusting. Although money was refunded I wouldn't get a take away from here again.

Don’t trust the opening times. Made a specific trip from Chelmsford but when we got there it was closed all day, even though advertised as being open 12-8. Very disappointing as it is really good fish and chips!

It is a shadow of what it used to be. The food across the board could have been better, we only had a bit of everything before throwing it away. A large portion of chips was more like a very small portion. We had Cod bites—there were four of them. Two were rigid and cardboard (like they had been cooked the previous day and then microwaved), and two were soggy and tasteless. Lamb Kebab was horrible with 90% chips and doner meat, very little salad/sauce or taste. As the owner states other options are available in Burnham-on-Crouch where customer service is less abrasive.

Look at the state of this.They taste as bad as they look.Try to eat it,but omg so bad.Hope i don’t get sick.Straight in the bin.

We ordered to pick up and were there on time. Fish was dry overcooked batter greasy and chips were lukewarm. Very disappointed. We have eaten from here before which have been okay. Hopefully just an off night

Best fish and chips we have had in a long time. Cod and haddock both cooked fresh were lovely. We had the medium size fish and they hung over our plates! crispy batter and plenty of chips, which were also very good. Polite staff who apologised for the wait. Not that we felt we waited very long at all for fresh cooked food. All served in nice boxes and bag to carry it home in. Well done Jolly Fryer

I’m not convinced theJolly Fryer actually uses beef dripping. I visited over the Easter weekend and asked for chips in beef dripping only - and was assured that was what I would get. I ordered too many chips and so took some home and reheated them later in the oven. Fat ran out of them in the oven dish. When the dish cooled to room temperature the fat was still runny oil in the bottom of the dish (beef dripping goes solid at room temperature). If you want to avoid seed oil but still eat chips (as I do) I don’t think you can rely on this place.

We had large fish and chips with a savaloy .. the fish was delicious flaky and pure white inside although still a few tiny bones found ..the chips need to be bigger and longer because they were small and quite greasy with too many potato eyes in them which is a waste of food and money Seemed like newer people again that have taken over the shop.. although very friendly the young girls t shirt was dirty it had what looked like white paint stains all over it . Presentation and cleanliness is key to win over any competitors and gain customers

First time ordering online,what can I say .food and service excellent,delivered to our door for very low nominal fee. HUGE portions, we will revise our order next time!!! Wonderful experience A***** .Very well done to management and all the team there. We will only be buying our delivery food from Jolly Fryer in the future

1st time ordering online for home delivery, online ordering was easy to use. Our cat 🐱 enjoyed a bit Of cod too. Was delivered on time, and was lovely and hot. Just what we needed on a cold winter evening. Highly recommend, we definitely will be ordering again 😀

My first visit to this fry spot and it certainly won’t be my last Sparkling clean, welcoming and prompt service. The fish and chips were tasty and well cooked. Lucky to have this as my local!

After many recommendations from people Essex me and son tried best chippy in Essex, Now beefing dripping is winner but fish was small batter so soft not crispy, fish was fresh fluffy nice, But disappointed with £23 2x cod chips

Lovely fish and chips. Cannot fault at all 😊 Only went back to visit after learning it was under new ownership. Such a friendly service (unlike the rude miserable northerner who owned it before). No- not related to the current owner but it’s always lovely to pop in and get a warm reception and a delicious dinner.

Oh dear. Had large cod with chips. Looked like a normal size cod to me and the chips were lukewarm at best and soggy and anaemic looking. Luckily had a microwave to hand to heat up the chips. It's been a long time since I've had cod from a chip shop and had to pick bones out of it! Sign on the window says best fish and chips in Essex, dread to imagine the worst! After your comment on the review - I can assure you we were genuine customers, you'll remember us as we were on our bikes and you told us about the upcoming beer festival. We didn't come back as we'd cycled back to our campsite and went home the next day. I stand by what we said in the review.

I tried this place out today and honestly it's the best fish and chips I've ever had in my life it was amazing I don't know what they out in their batter but it was incredible I usually peel half the batter off but I ate all of this also the fish is fresh daily and has no skin on it the chef cooked it to perfection he knows his stuff. After looking at the extensive menu for ten minutes (they have ribs and chicken both cooked on the rotisserie amd they do authentic Greek gryos which my friend got and she said it was amazing I finally decided on the meal deal I got Cod chips and a can of drink for £10 which Is very good value for money the staff were amazing the girl on the till was very polite and helpful and the owner and chef were both lovely we had a good laugh together and they were both Greek cypriuts which I am also so we had a good chat about cypress. Not only the best fish and chips I've ever had but was also the best experience I have had at a shop/food establishment I will definitely be making this a weekly treat. 10/10 would recommend to anyone and I'm fussy with my food I uset to be a chef so no good food when I eat it. Also the portion was huge I was stuffed after and couldn't even finish all my chips.oh amd they also gave us both a chicken nugget to try and it was the best nugget I've ever had this shop sells nothing but the best

Very disappointing when compared with previous owners. Fish portions (cod and haddock) were barely medium, although large were ordered. Haddock was moist👍but the batter was disappointingly oily. Chips were a disappointment too… just mediocre. Overall, an expensive, mediocre meal.

‘Large cod’ was offensively small despite the price increase (as were the other fish types). The chips were average when compared to previous ownership and despite friendly staff.

Ordered before Christmas and the beans were missing not a major issue and can't fault the new manager very quick to apologise offered refund and a good will gesture (free chips). I only had chips previously as wasn't well, ordered fish tonight and definitely a shame £8 for a medium, now has skin and bones, appreciate that's not an issues for some but I'm fussy and am not a fan. After removing the skin really not that much fish and no longer the nice chunky flaky fish from before. Thought the service was lovely and very nice and friendly also the batter was very tasty curry sauce is better than before. I think we will return but probably not for the fish which is a shame being a fish and chip shop. Mixed feelings but wish the business all the luck and fingers crossed for a better fish offering in the future.

1st time trying jolly fryer since the new owners and I have to say its nice to be able to choose what you want your fish cooked in. The staff was lovely and friendly, great food and brilliant customer service. The added touch to be able to order online and choose a time to collect really helps. 👍

We visited this shop when John owned it and the food and service were perfect. Visited this shop Fri 16th De c met by chaos. We collected our food and it was cold and needed to be reheated. I was unable to find any fish within my batter and the chips were extremely greasy. Not impressed with the new owners and will not be returning. Other customers felt the same as a gentleman returned his whole family's dinner as the fish he felt was off! Other customers were complaining that they couldn't order over the phone. Now looking for the 2nd best fish shop in Burnham now John has left.

Lovely new owners and 10/10 fish and chips

This in my humble opinion is the best fish and chips shop in the area. We have never had a bad one from here. Mostly when you are given your food its so hot it's hard to hold so its alway nice to eat hot food when you get it home. It's cash only NO CARDS. But there is a cash point near by if you need to get cash. Price wise everything is getting more expensive these days but my last order was 2 medium cod, 1 large chips 1 medium chips and 1 mushy peas not much change from a twenty pound note. But it's very nice food.

Absolutely awesome old school sea side chippy 👌 and they serve chips cheese and gravy to die for ! Perfect setting walk around the corner sit by the sea wall enjoy the view and grab a pint also , quick service, friendly welcoming staff always have a good jolly chat cheers guys shall deffo be back for more 👍 well recommended!!

The cod in this place is unbelievable, its so thick & flaky, now the chips weren't good, they are fried in beef dripping, I don't mind that' i asked for a medium portion, which was very little, If I am ever in the area again, would i go again, if I wanted fish, yeah

Undercooked chips, almost raw potato. Poor batter on fish, too thick and again undercooked and rushed. Only saving grace was excellent curry sauce. Won't be visiting again.

I had arrived not very hungry and was guided by the very friendly couple running the place towards an option on their menu of three small pieces of cod and half a portion of chips which was just right size for me. lTasted delicious probably because the fish was cooked to order and everything is fried in beef dripping . Just round the corner are some seats on the waterfront seats where you can eat with a wonderful view of the sea

Has GONE DOWN HILL in the last year! 👎👎👎 ONLY SELLS Cod! Used to have a selection of 🐟, now ONLY sells Cod. Cod IS UNSUSTAINABLE unlike other similar tasting white fish such as Haddock and Pollack. The 🍟 were UNDERCOOKED too. Will NEVER go back here, because Cod SHOULD be the fish taken off the menu until the stocks recover and until its not fished during their breeding periods.

Best chip shop in burnham on crouch and essex

Went in, got served had a lovely chat with friendly staff, got me medium cod n chips £6.75 and left before I started dribbling 😋😋😋😋 Yep this place you smell before you go in..........well kinda..........follow your nose as it drags you to this place, the smell was just like I was a kid again on the Barking Road near Canning Town. Got to a bench in the sunshine and then sat down and tucked in. Chips, everyone of em had a crunch, the Batter was cracking as I cut it, the cod was falling apart it was so flakey. Yep loved it and will be going back, for sure. If you're ever near Burnham on Crouch then this place is a must, has to be done. Go eat and be merry 😁 As for the staff Thankyou for the chat and the welcome 😊

Moved to burnham On crouch and fancied a nice bag of Fish And chips and came across jolly Fryers in the high street, and do you know what !! It's the best Cod Bites Haddock and chips very friendly staff & John is a characther you can phone your orders in or pop in and give your order but i wasn't dissapointed

absolutely fab fish and chips to takeaway as we were staying locally and couldn't get booked in to the restaurant. staff/owners were friendly and nothing was to much trouble to help us out food was fab and generous portions

Judging by the reviews... Over rated? No way!! Very tasty food all round, good portion size and not greasy. Great place to sit outside with toilets and benches, just round the corner. Even had a friendly cat to scare away the gulls! Thank you.

Seriously seriously good. My chunky cod was perfect! A beautiful piece of fish which was properly seasoned. This is quite hard to come by in my humble opinion.
