Jake's Plaice - Fish and Chips in Hambleton

We where stay in Huby for a couple of days and after a long day in York we decide to go to this local chippy. I had a small fish and chips, the fish was huge, chips the best we'd tasted in a long time. My hubby was thrilled as they had a traditional fishcake, which are virtually impossible to find. He said it was delicious and went back to compliment the owner who was very friendly. We would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Freshly cooked fish and chips and chicken nuggets and chips. Fair price and tasty fish. Cooked well.

Well happy with my ‘chippy tea’ 😎 This felt almost ‘retro’, a good old fashioned chippy, not one of your new ‘serves anything and everything’ (but not very well) type of places. Battered sausage, chips & curry sauce, washed down with Dandelion and Burdock took me right back to my youth. My food was perfect, portion was plenty big enough and the service was spot-on. I’ll be back!

The best. Cash only though so be warned.

Mediocre take away. Over cooked fish. Batter was really thick with a small piece of fish hidden inside. Will not be returning.

Good cod & chips - stayed hot until we were ready to eat. Friendly service. The person serving needs to invest in a new overall - although it was clean it was very torn around the middle and found it slightly off putting seeing his bare flesh!. Not a very good impression.

What a wonderful chip shop could not be more helpful, when I ordered, very polite and cheerful.

Overcharges for a weak amount of food. Also quite low quality compared to any other time I've had a chippy tea elsewhere. Only go here because there's no other chippy nearby lads. On your own head be it.

Haddock and chips with florescent peas. Chips were fine. Batter on the haddock was soggy, the haddock was tiny inside and also grey and sloppy. I’d given it another go as local but won’t be risking it again

The fish and chips had obviously been sitting for some time - the fish was tiny and completely dried up. We had ordered mushy peas and got a pot curry sauce instead. Considering there was no one else in there there's no excuse for this poor quality. Won't be going back.

Just moved to easingwold and thought we would try the fish and chips but we're very disappointed the both fish and chips had obviously been reheated numerous times and were almost inedible . We will not use again !!!!

Excellent fish & chips. They can’t do enough to help. I was short of money tonight and they let me pop back with money after taking the food. Always polite and helpful and the food is great especially the curry sauce!!

Well I for one decided not to waste my time inside while covid18 grips Easingwold, but instead to get out there and get fish and chips every day for the past week.Monday was ok, and i understand the reviews about soggy batter.... but you know, I though NO LANGDON, you made a deal with yoursef and then tried...Tuesday. Better..... but maybe because I had a four pack of ale to wash it down.Wednesday. Well I was hungover and it was better because Shane gave me a free tomato sauce because he couldn't believe how drunk I was on Tuesday.Thursday - even BETTER, but I must admit I only had a chip bap because three fish in a row was expensive.Friday - well, it's fish supper night isn't so I had to have fish. Shane was getting funny with me - said there was something fishy about a chippy five nights in a row.Saturday - EVEN BETTER because Shane now threw in a free curry sauce. Some proper rude people there tonight though but think they were just mad about lockdown.Sunday - was really nice but I threw it up on myself. I hate doing a sick but I guess seven days of chippy was enough.I'm going to come back, it was a nice week.

We had a take away recently whilst staying in the area. The staff were friendly and the place is nice and clean. The food was lovely, hot and well cooked. Would recommend a try.

Good portion size the small was perfect for me as I don't eat many. The fish was really good as well. The only downside was no real options for vegetarians.

This place is a great place in the little town of easingwold do suggest for traveling through.

Improvement on previous visits. Service was quite prompt on a busy Friday evening. Quality was reasonable. A little pricey compared to others in the area.

The fish and chips at Jakes plaice is amazing. It is the best in york area in my opinion. Very generous portions. Would recommend it to anyone around easingwold.

Travel to this fish and chip shop on my way back home from York at least once a week. Always greeted in a very polite manner, fish has crispy batter, chips cooked to perfection and I love the curry sauce ! (Not one for mushy peas!) I find the price very reasonable and a decent portion size. Staff always chatty and never waiting too long for any order. Definitely will continue to return weekly

Bought fish & chips twice from this 'chippy' whilst staying in the area. Called in once and could not resist another visit before returning home to Essex. The food was cooked perfect, flaky white cod, crispy batter (no horrible grey skin), lovely chips. One word - delicious !

Glad they were open and a very good welcome from the owner. The fish was dried to order and they were definitely worth waiting for.

After a poor showing a few months ago, we tried again and saw some improvement. The chips were ok (underdone last time) and the fish batter was not so “mushy” this time. Portion size was not the greatest in the area but service was quick and more cheery than last time.

Been here several times over the last few months. Very hot and miss with the quality!Young lad playing on phone when I walked in so guess it was a quiet night.Chips were very soggy and slightly over done. Fish tasted old like it was re-fried. Not the first time experiencing this issue but equally it can be amazing!Seems to be a huge difference if the gaffer's there having a good ol' chat with his customers of however many years. Young en's don't have the consistency needed for excellent quality these days. Will probably head over to Huby Fisheries in future as never had a bad portion there (1 reason why people stop shopping local!)

When we arrived found shop closed due to electrical problem. Went down to Harper’s on A19 much better than we had a Jakes place last time. Won’t bother again

I’ve just finished my haddock and chips and mushy peas. The batter on the fish was very soggy in the middle, the chips were ok but a very small portion for £1.80?! Total cost (£7.20) was only a couple of pounds less than the Durham Ox restaurant charge down the road. They even charge for scraps, although I didn’t have any. I have never seen that before. I will not be returning at those prices or portions.

I visited here with my partner the day before the tour de Yorkshire, after hearing from a local that this was the better of the two fish shops in Bedale. It turns out they were wrong! First off I appreciate that the lady made everything fresh, which meant we waited about 10 minutes and had to listen to her badger the customer before us about how he must know her children or family members because he lived in the same area as them. The guy she was talking too looked really embarrassed and awkward, as just because somebody lives in the same area as somebody else, does not mean they will know who you're talking about! But she wouldn't let it lie, she was telling him, road names, schools, ages etc and he had no idea who she was talking about which was obvious. Secondly, I'm pretty sure we asked for an adults portion, being both fully grown adults ourself, only to have received what could only be classed as a small child's portion, which was disappointing considering the added wait and how hungry we were. The sausage wasn't the best, and neither were the chips, they were covered in grease, my sausage was dripping and my partners fish was swimming in it. We binned 3/4 of the food as it just wasn't edible, and went elsewhere instead. So a complete waste of money. I've now learnt that Halls is THE best fish shop in Bedale.

Just experienced the fish and chips from this place and was really impressed. Chips were done to perfection and the batter on the fish was amazing with the portion sizes being generous for not too expensive a price. Will definitely be going again.

Working in the area so popped in on a Friday lunchtime during the recent snowy spell.

This is a great place to stop off in Easingwold near York, Just off the A19 bypass. The staff are friendly and the fish and chips are freshly cooked. Not a restaurant just eat in the paper or tray and go. Good value for money

We have recently moved into the local area and spotted this traditional looking Fish & Chips takeaway towards the north end of Long Street, a bit out of the main town centre. After a long day we decided it would be great to have takeaway fish and chips, and it was a Friday early evening.
