Exceptional food as always. The queenie scallops were delicious and the black pudding salad was very tasty and all generously portioned. The specials board included a pork dish which was popular with our group, the rest of us opted for the fish and chips - sooo good!! The staff were very attentive. We enjoyed pre dinner drinks on the Terrace watching the Canadian geese with their goslings on the beautiful Hodder and the sun even shone!

My wife and I had dinner on Sunday night with my parents and it was a fantastic experience all round. We made the most of the great weather by having drinks on the rear terrace where the views are breathtaking. When we ate the food was fantastic and the service was top draw. My salmon starter was delicious and the fish and chips lived up to their reputation. My fellow diners all loved their food too.

I booked for 8.30pm we arrived at 8.00pm to be greeted with oh! we thought you weren’t coming as they had the booking for 8.00pm. We were not offered to have a drink in the bar and were taken to the table straightaway. When they came to take our order my son asked if we could have a break between courses then we could have a leisurely meal, he then ordered a magnum of Chateau Margo which of course is not cheap. Once the starter was finished he them reminded them we would like a small break before the main meal was served to be told that the chef finished cooking at 9.00 pm. When the mains arrived they all looked so unappetising, my son had asked for his steak to be cooked medium rare it was almost mooing so he sent it back. I had the duck confit as I had made it myself a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it, however the one I was was served was dry and unappetising. My husband had the lamb which again was not good and as it was his birthday treat the whole evening was spoiled. It is such a shame that such a lovely venue was spoiled by such a mediocre meal needless to say we will not be going again. Our taxi was booked for 11.00pm but by 10.00pm I had rung to pick us up asap as the whole event had been ruined.

Over the past 8 years we have regularly made the hour or so journey to the Inn at Whitewell, for either a Cream Tea or lunch. Both have always been of a very high standard, the legendary, oversized and freshly prepared, warm scones, rivalling those offered by the finest Tea Rooms, being a particular incentive. I am glad to say that along with the unchanging beauty of the location and timeless architecture, the service has remained very good. It makes it all the more disappointing that the past two occasions we have ventured out, the scones have been very poor. The first of these 2 trips, we thought there may have been a batch that had gone slightly wrong that day or a new recipe had been tried and failed, without any evidence of quality control. And today we hoped the quality we had enjoyed in the past would have been restored once again. Sadly, this was very much not the case. The scones were exactly the same as the previous visit: dry, crumbly to the extent that it was impossible to butter without large chunks of it breaking off, and the bottom was slightly warm and the top cold. Bought in? Frozen? Certainly not freshly baked on the day, warmed thoroughly in the oven, and worse than that, more like an over-baked, dense sponge cake than a scone. This definitely falls into the realms of a First World problem, I know, but it is disappointing when any respected and reliable institution falters. I don’t know that much notice is taken of any negative reviews on this platform, but I can only hope that some sense of pride might lead to the kitchen once again perfecting this quintessential British staple.

Had weekday 3 courses for lunch. Lovely building. Friendly efficient staff. Food nice but not up to the hype sadly. One of us had the famous fish pie and apart from the very nice cheesy mash top the pie was a big letdown. Some of the fish was very hard almost chewy and the grey bits were still on. There was nothing extra in the sauce (like capers for example) it was perfectly edible but just a basic fish, plain white sauce, cheese mash fish pie - expectations were too high! The other lunch (lamb) was also nice enough . Both meals lacked vegetable in the right balance imho . (Fish pie had none at all) I think we could have probably added peas for an extra £5! So yes a nice place for lunch. Not somewhere to go out of your way for. Good staff. Lovely view.

Pleasant welcome and service throughout meal. Good choice on menu with interesting specials. Our two starters were squid and an excellent plum tomato soup. Main of sea bass with lobster bisque rated excellent. Choice of ploughman’s may not have tested chef’s culinary skills BUT the home-cooked ham plus the home-made chutney and pickled vegetables really were memorable.

Recently with COVID/Brexit etc dining out has been somewhat hit and miss in terms of food and service but throughout this upheaval The Inn at Whitewell has remained the constant star. The food, drink and confident, polite, non-intrusive staff are beyond comparison and, above all, the management of Charles personifies the ultimate tight ship. I hope the Bowman family will not object to me comparing the IATW with the experince of dining at The Angel at Hetton when Pascal was in his prime but the Bowmans have it! Just please keep on doing what you do so well - the ultimate destination dining experience in the north west by a country mile.

Attempted to visit as a family whilst camping at Bowland Wild Boar Park. We were in 2 vehicles. My husband was in his van and struggled to park so admittedly parked in front of a container. The moment we left our vehicles we were rudely confronted from what looked like a gardener and maybe a barman/waiter. The gardener TOLD my husband to move his van as he needed access to the container. My husband was looking around for further parking when another man rudely TOLD my husband to move it. He then made the assumption that we were not visiting The Inn and that we were not booked in, he repeatedly told us that parking was only for customers. I confronted him about this and asked if all the people sat on the grass at the front were booked in even though they were only drinking not eating and he obviously said they were. He was rude and judgemental. They didn't seem to mind the fact that I had parked my Mercedes there just the fact my husband had parked his work van there. I would definitely not recommend visiting here if all the staff are this rude and judgemental.

Lack of masks with waiters, and social distancing.Cutlery semi wrapped in serviettes, and condiments handled by staff Salt and pepper etc which were plastic, pointless cleaning them, and then handling them! Spare a thought for people that may be allergic to dogs though.Having said that, the food was very good although slightly expensive, service was very good.It would be good if you were able to pre book a table. It was busy on arrival and took a while to find where we needed to go to be shown to our table where we waited for a considerable time to be asked what we wanted to eat and to realise we needed to go to the bar to get drinks. The time between courses was far too long (we arrived at 12.30 and were still waiting to be asked if we wanted desert at 3pm). The service was poor we asked for water with our meal which arrived as we finished eating the time between courses was too long to be comfortable and having to find a waiter to ask him to come and take our order for deserts. I gave up and didn't order a sweet as I had past wanting one. A big disappointment on the whole as the meal was just ok. Don't think we will make the effort to go back here

Get there early. Table 21. This bit is going to be boring but the food is brilliant. Even the coffee. Soup was amazing, Roast Beef , well done to the Chef and team. Wanted to try the trifle but was full. You order at the bar which takes the pressure of the floor staff and focus on the food delivery which is so fast and efficient. Definitely be back and the establishment deserves all the praise it has received. Expensive, maybe but you pay for quality of the food and how it is cooked. Well done team

The Inn is everything a countryside retreat ought to be. Nestled in the middle of the Forest of Bowland and decorated in a beautifully traditional style, a fire was roaring in the grate when we arrived to a warm and friendly welcome from the Front of House staff. We had booked the a la carte menu in the dining room but were given time to peruse the menu in the bustling bar area before being shown to the restaurant which is pleasantly secluded from the bar, allowing a more intimate feel.

Arrived shortly after the start of the 12-2 lunch window on the Saturday after Christmas and this vast rambling venue was already rammed, but not rowdy. Dogs and Range Rovers are not compulsory but you are at risk of tripping over the former and being reversed into by the latter in the car park and surrounding roads. Luckily for the 13 of us there was a no-show in the Gallery Room so we got this splendid room to ourselves ("Eee, it's like eating at Downton Abbey" said our lad). We just had mains and drinks and were all well satisfied with the price, tastes and quality, and with the pleasant unrushed service from team Whitewell. Could do with a few more veggie and vegan options though. We hadn't packed for muddy walking but the glorious counytryside you can see from the back windows invites a Spring/Summer return for a Bowland ramble and another delightful dining experience.

We'd heard good things about the Forest of Bowland restaurants and the Inn at Whitewell in particular. The dining room was sparsely populated the evening we had dinner, so the atmosphere was on the quiet side. The dining experience was mixed, with excellent wines, OK-ish starter and pudding, but an underwhelming lamb main course. We'll put this down to an off night and try again sometime soon.

Wow! What a place. Absolute perfection. My husband and I have regularly stayed in so called 5 star hotels all over the UK but this is beyond comparison. The place is a very slick machine. Our room had outstandingly picturesque views from every window. Fabulously comfy bed. A sofa and a fire. There was a small walk in room with a clothing rail and ample space for shoes, good lighting with a full length mirroring the back of the door. The bathroom, again a superbly designed room with a bath and shower. The dining room very impressive with a fabulous menu to suit all. Breakfast, absolutely delicious. You just couldn’t fault anything, truly. My husband and I are already excitedly planning our next trip.

We went to check out the Good Pub Guide pub of the year today. We had a lovely late lunch and found it to be absolutely deserving of its status! It was superb from start to finish- from the roaring fire that greeted us on arrival, to the friendly, helpful, efficient staff, interesting menu, delicious food and stunning surroundings! In spite of it being 2pm on a Monday, when we arrived, it was still busy with guests. There was still plenty of space to sit & it was a relaxed & cosy ambiance. Our order was taken & served in a very timely manner & we had a lovely walk along the swollen river afterwards. Perfect, although I imagine at busier times, parking could be a challenge.

There is something very special about the Inn at Whitewell that I find difficult to either explain or describe. It's not just its appealing style and classic good taste (which are major factors). For me, to stay a night at Whitewell is an exceptionally relaxing and comfortable experience - in elegant surroundings that are unpretentious and entirely unsnobby. I have always found the staff, without a single exception, to be faultlessly polite, efficient, and helpful. Do not believe any bad-tempered reviewer who claims otherwise. I just wish Whitewell was a little nearer my home in Islington.

We live locally but heard that Greendale had changed ownership and wanted to try it out. We’ve since been several times for brunch and lunch and keep going back for more .. If plain menus and ordinary fare is your preference maybe it won’t suit, but if you favour culinary flair and a point of difference to the norm Greendale is definitely worth a visit. They support local producers offering a small but interesting menu. There’s always a specials variation & everything is homemade. They have an alcohol licence and even pair some of their meals with various beverages as an option. The coffee is gorgeous, & served with a little homemade shortbread… what’s not to like A little Gem right on our doorstep, with great service and ambience into the bargain! 🤗

Had a full English and neither of us could eat it. It was cooked in some foul tasting oil. When we pointed this out the Guy was very defensive and completely ignored us when we said goodbye on leaving even though we paid in full.
