Il Salice Italian Restaurant in Braintree

Avoid this place at all costs. We'd been sat at our table for 10 minutes, the waiter came and asked if we were ready to order. I said that we'd like to order some drinks first. Before i got the chance he walked off telling me he was going to check the system. We ordered olives to share, they were the ones you get in a jar. We didn't want starters as we wanted to have dessert. I ordered fillet of salmon wrapped in Parma Ham with fresh asparagus, sautéed veg and white wine sauce. The salmon was so over cooked it stuck to my teeth, it was not wrapped in Parma ham, that was just plonked on the side of the plate. There was no asparagus. The sautéed veg consisted of 1 new potato, 2 slices of carrot and 1 piece of brocoli. The white wine sauce was congealed gunk. I sent it back. It took the waitress 15mins to come back and tell me they had no more salmon. By this time my partner had finished his main. He had liver, was supposed to come with onion and bacon, that was missing and the red wine gravy looked more like dishwater. I decided not to have another main and requested a dessert menu. After being given the menu it took the waitress 25 mins to come back and take the order. I just requested the bill. The waitress had the cheek to say we haven't charged you for your main course. I had ONE bite out of it before sending it back. They also didn't charge me for one of my drinks. Will not be returning or recommending this place to anyone.

This is a great place to go if you want great food and great service. Staff are attentive without being too pushy. The food was delicious. I will definitely be returning soon.

We had been going over 2 years back but finally got tired of the quality and value. We decided to go again as we were very limited on choice over the Easter weekend. We can truly say it was a huge surprise and a stunning evening. Service, food and pricing were superb. So pleased they have got back to the restaurant we once enjoyed going to. We will be back. P.S. The cheesecake was delicious.

I'm surprised at the recent poor reviews. We had a lovely meal there this evening. Fresh food, a varied menu, served as promptly as you would expect. The staff are friendly and helpful and we had a great evening. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Massive disappointment unfortunately. The least Italian food I’ve ever had. I’ve honestly had Asda own pizza 10 times better than what I ate here. It didn’t taste of anything and was undercooked I had to leave the middle.

Well I have never had to do a review on a restaurant and especially one to celebrate Mother's Day. Il Salice, once a pub and now supposed to be an Italian restaurant, somehow they have missed the opportunity to create somewhere with an atmosphere even slightly Italian, not the music not even a painting/print on the stark white walls with lighting not appropriate at all. Now the food, set mother's day menu at £40/head. Joke!! My starter : Gaberoni all Aglio, (King prawns cooked with garlic and chilli oil on toasted ciabatta bread), in actual fact this was presented as 3 croutons the size of 50p piece with the smallest king prawn you have ever seen in your life with a teaspoon of the said sauce over the top. £11.95 off the menu!!!!! My wife had the duck and I the cannelloni. 5 out of 10 for that. Salad garnish no dressing..... Desert: My wife had profiteroles ( just 3, not of any size to compensate for the small number served and looking lost on a large plate) and I the Tiramisu. Then the wine £33 a bottle that would have cost about £8 in the supermarket. Oh dear, never again. Honestly, should have gone to Prezzo for a better meal at half the price instead of the £112 that it cost me.

We had enjoyed the food was amazing, staff were very polite and great environment. We are hoping to visit this restaurant again in near future.

Booked a table for the 24th of February but sadly the experience was pretty poor. I could see that the staff were trying their best but lack of experience followed by a chef that didn’t know about Italian cooking and the whole thing was a car crash. Trip advisor, if you’re reading this, could you please start this listing again as it has clearly been taken over by some very inexperienced people. Honestly I’ve eaten in some of the best restaurants and lovely greasy spoons but sadly this came nowhere near up to any standard. My lasagne was only half cooked and was raw at the bottom and after returning it to the kitchen I was sat watching my partner eat hers. Admittedly they replaced my meal with another choice off the menu but unfortunately it wasn’t much at all. Two small boiled potato’s cut in half, some side dressing salad that was out of a bag and a portion of veg that wouldn’t feed a hamster with a flatten fillet of chicken that appeared to have been microwaved. We left after settling three quarters of the bill as it certainly wasn’t worth the £90 it came to. Two starters, two main meals and two soft drinks. I do hope they get it right soon as it could be and obviously once was a little gold mine.

Last week I’ve visited there with my family for dinner the environment was very good and the staff was very friendly and kind. The food was prefect, Definitely going back.

Visited here a couple of years ago and it was amazing, however, came here on Saturday 10th with 4 of my friends to celebrate my birthday, we arrived at 5.30 and the place was empty, half and hour later a table of 2 arrived and was seated next to us. We ordered bread and olives and decided we wouldn’t get starters as we all wanted dessert, so ordered our mains, which took a long time to come out considering the restaurant wasn’t busy. Three of us ordered the carbonara which was pretty tasteless, over cooked pasta and seemed as though it had cream in it, my guess is that this was an instant sauce or boil in the bag pasta dish, definitely didn’t taste like an authentic carbonara should, which was disappointing, but it was edible so we ate it (although at nearly £19 each, I feel like we probably should’ve complained) One of our party ordered the Ribeye steak cooked rare, when it came out, it was clearly not a ribeye, it looked and tasted like a sirloin and since my friend has been a butcher for 14 years, she is pretty knowledgeable and knows her meat as you can imagine, we sent it back, only for the waitress to return with the steak to tell us that the chefs assure us that it is 100% ribeye, when we knew it was 100% not a ribeye (I’ve attached a picture of said “ribeye”) at this point the food on the plate is now cold so the waitress offered to have a fresh one cooked, we agreed in the hope it might come out and this time they might actually serve her a ribeye, but no, it came back exactly the same, but this time was over cooked, I’d say it was cooked medium at best. (I’m guessing they just threw the original steak back in a pan or under a grill to heat up and then sent it back out.) My friend didn’t want to make a fuss and said she would eat it anyway. The last member of our party is vegetarian, and was struggling to decide what to order as the only options were margarita pizza, tomato pasta or vegetable risotto, all of which sound very basic and it’s nearly £20 a dish so she was very underwhelmed, I asked the waitress if there were any vegetarian dishes on the specials and she said that they could do a ricotta and spinach cannelloni, my friend was thrilled about this and asked to order that, however, after her plate of food arrived and she took her first bite, it was very evident that she had eaten beef! Told the waitress and she took the dish to the kitchen to find out if it was definitely meat and she returned to tell us that the chefs couldn’t make a vegetarian one, snd that she’s sorry as she did ask for vegetarian, but they only had the meat cannelloni… I mean …whaaat?!! So my poor friend had eaten meat for the first time in 35 years because of their mistake, ended up with the vegetable risotto which she was unsure of but felt obliged to accept instead, and it was awful! Not risotto consistency, tasted of nothing, hardly any veg in it and was white and stodgy like a really thick rice pudding and generally looked very unappetising. Seemed like a microwave meal to be honest, and to add insult to injury, there was no attempt to try and redeem themselves, no offer of taking her meal off the bill, no offer of free drinks or a dessert by way of apology for such a dreadful experience, nothing! Then they came over with the dessert menu and we told them no, we don’t want desserts thank you, they brought us the bill, we reluctantly paid and then went to McDonald’s for ice cream. If you want decent food, decent service, a nice experience and don’t want to feel like you’ve been robbed, I would avoid this restaurant at all costs.

As a community we recently went to the Willows but this support was clearly unappreciated by the new owners. By now this should have been returned to a gastro pub. The previous owners systematically destroyed the local community asset and imposed a sterile unwelcoming environment. The new owners believe that they can ignore the council’s ruling to return it to a pub and have continued in the same failed plan as the previous owner. The new staff behind the bar (only has 2 draft beer) are very nice but the owner yet again will not engage with the local community despite being asked if he would by us. It is very much lost that this grade 2 listed building previously had open fires and a warm welcome and should also be known as The Willows. If you engage with the local community you will succeed. Previous tenants walked a very successful path. If you choose to ignore them then you will fail. You also need to increase your beer selection. The picture below shows how the pub area was returned to a restaurant despite being told by Braintree council to ensure that it remains a bar.

Had a fantastic meal here tonight. There was not a single thing I could fault. Their home made bread was beautiful. And our starters and mains were fantastic. I had the salmon which was amazing and my husband had the mixed grill and said it was delicious. The deserts were absolutely beautiful too, along with the wonderful staff made this a truly special evening. Definitely worth a visit

Oh dear. Please, if you're reading this review before deciding whether or not to spend your hard earned cash here, - DON'T BOOK! The 5 star reviews relate to the restaurant BEFORE this new management took over and boy have they made a hash of it. We came here last Valentine's Day and had a lovely evening but this year's Valentine's Day debacle was a disaster. If I could give zero stars I would. The food took FOREVER to arrive and it wasn't even nice! People on other tables were actually WALKING OUT of the restaurant because they were waiting so long for their food! The maitre-d was trying to pacify diners with drinks on the house but nothing could compensate for the abysmal service, and poor quality of food. I kept thinking Basil Fawlty was going to appear any minute! Hopefully no-one was planning to propose there that evening - it would have totally ruined it. I feel sorry for the previous lovely Italian family that worked so hard to build up the amazing reputation that this restaurant used to have. This new management will now run it into the ground. Maybe they should open up an Indian restaurant here instead of trying and failing to re-create Italian cuisine.

Having dined at this restaurant on a number of occasions, and never been let down, I booked a table and paid a £10.00 deposit for a St. Valentines meal for myself and my partner, unaware that the restaurant had changed hands. We arrived at 7.15pm and were shown to our table, ordered drinks, wine and placed our menu choices. The drinks and wine arrived, we asked that the wine be placed in the chiller until our starters were served. After waiting over an hour, with no sign of our first course, we requested the wine be brought back to the table. A further 90 minutes passed, during which time we watched other diners receive their starters, suddenly our main meals were served to us. We and the Restaurant Manager advised the waiting staff to return the meals to the kitchen. A further 20 minutes later, with still no sign of our starters, we decided to leave the restaurant at 9.30pm. The Manager, who was as kind and delightful as she has always been, apologised profusely to us for the circumstances but our evening was runied. What a disappointment this restaurant has become, we certainly will NOT be visiting Il Salice again. We ended up purchasing a meal from a local fast food restaurant!!!

From my previous reviews you will be aware that I loved eating at Il Salice. Since the new owners took over, and are using the good reviews of the previous owners, I reverse my views. We arrived on St Valentines day dinner, a special day to many, at 7.15. Ordered drinks and food almost immediately. The drinks arrived but by 9.00 no food. At 9.10 the main courses arrived but as we hadn't had our starters. The courses were sent back to the kitchen while we waited for the starters. More waiting. The manageress, a lovely lady who was with the previous owners, tried to placate the irate diners with 'on the house' drinks. However, as I was driving, my annoyance wasn't lowered. 9.30 we got up and walked out. It is a shame that a wonderful, friendly, restaurant ends up in such a quandry. It needs a good chef, well trained serving staff and decent management. At the moment these are lacking. Thank goodness Braintree has a 24 hour McDonalds.

We were not aware this had changed ownership. Up until October last 2023 this was 5* every time we visited. It is not the same restaurant now at all. Very disappointed.

Disappointing - Reviews vastly overinflate the quality and service. Far too expensive for an Italian and cooked without Italian flare by a very pleasant group of Asian chaps who tripped over themselves on the service front. Will not return and cannot recommend.

Do go here for lunch or dinner. The food is authentic Italian and the restaurant provides a relaxed atmosphere. Julia is a super host, making you feel extremely welcome. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend for any occasion or just some lovely food.
