Went for some welsh cakes which were quite expensive at £4 for 6 and they were dry and inedible would have given to dog if didn't have currants in. My cream scone was rock hard and again overpriced all was left. Would have tried a scotch egg but over £4 is a joke.

This deli-bakery is rammed full of enticing fare at top dollar. It's quite easy to spend £3-£4 on a small loaf of artisan bread. You would assume that it's baked on the premises, (it's not, although it may be part-baked). You would assume for the price that the bread is absolutely fresh, unfortunately that isn't necessarily the case. Too often I have arrived home to find my breakfast bread is past its best by several days. If you charge top dollar, you need to be providing best quality. Simples! (They're not).

We purchased two welsh cakes at 80 pence each from this shop, to have with a coffee on the front. I can only describe these two Welsh cakes as the very worst i have ever tasted, they were burned on one side and under done on the other which was the side displayed, sadly we walked to a hotel on the sea, purchased two fabulous coffees form a mobile van, where we were to consume our welsh cakes,!!!! im sure the sea gulls would have enjoyed them. make sure you look at the cakes before leaving the shop

This was really disappointing as the shop is beautiful. Went here to buy some cakes, pas0trys, pies, sausage roll, bread and ham. Found the staff to be a little rude to be honest. It was as if yheh didn't like us because we wasn't Welsh. There where a lot of rolling of eyes. The ham and bread was excellent. The pies were all cold and no option to reheat. When we re heated the sausage roll it was so dry. The cornish pasty was average but the sweet pastrys and cake was inedible. The sweet pastrys tasted dry and stale. Will not re visit.

We popped in here during a visit to Porthcawl. There is a lovely, mouthwatering range of pies, cakes, preserves etc to choose from. The freshly cooked on the premises (in the window) Welsh Cakes were beautiful (and I have experience of many different Welsh Cakes). The shop looks lovely and interesting inside and out. The only small niggle was that we asked for some items to be gift wrapped and whilst that service is available it did seem bothersome and we would have had to call back. However, overall, excellent and we will go there again.

The owner of this shop served me today. I wanted to buy 6 Welsh cakes but only 5 were ready. He still charged me full price. As I passed the shop again I decided to go and ask for the one he owed me. I explained to the staff what had happened and she went to see the owner. He made such a fuss anyone would have thought I was robbing the till. He said they don't usually do this and he would have signed the receipt. I said if anyone was that desperate to lie about 1 Welsh cake I would give it to them. He then said that people do apparently try this on. And if anyone believes that their best friend must be Santa and the tooth fairy. Never shop there again.

After lunch in Porthcawl we usually pop in and pick up something for tea at Home and Colonial. Great choice of pies, pasties, scotch eggs and cakes and everything we've tried from here has been tasty and fresh. Well worth a visit after a stroll along the front.

I went to the store in Porthcawl on Friday 30th of November, to purchase some cheese. The had some samples of a cheese and pickle pork pie on the counter and after tasting a sample bought one of the pies. On trying to eat the pie, later ,at home I found it inedible. It tasted nothing like the sample, the pastry was so dry and hard, a knife could not cut it. The piece of pastry I tried to eat was dry and bitter. The pork itself was hard to cut and it appeared to be overcooked. I contacted the store, on its web site, to complain about the poor quality of the pie, on the Saturday, (I live a long way from the store). This is now Wednesday 5th December and they have not responded to my complaint. I think this falls far below the service expected from such a store.

We did!......Hubby and I went in here on a recent Monday lunchtime. It was like an Aladdin's cave of cakes and bakes. I chose a beef & stilton pasty and he had a lamb & mint pasty. They cost £5.20 which he was able to pay by card. We ate the cold oggies al fresco in the summer sunshine. For info....they don't sell hot pies.

Really happy to have purchased a few yummy bits from this good deli for Christmas. Prices and service are very good. My only negative point is possibly to the manager who on Christmas Eve was bossing the staff around and generally quite grumpy. A shame, for what looks like a good local business. Maybe next year and all year round be a bit more cheery, as your staff were friendly.

mu wife and I happened across this shop during a brief stay at the Rose and Crown, Nottage. Right in the main shopping area, John Street of Porthcawl, this is a gem of a shop stocking all forms of bakery items as well as being an excellent delicatessen. I read one review of this business which alleged rudeness from staff. My wife and I were treated with courtesy that I only recall from a half century ago. We are both retired and have got used to bored, disinterested shop assistants. We left the shop with many items to bring home with us. Everything from the currant buns (a real flavour throwback) to the family sized corned beef pie to the spicy chicken pasties and the Bloomer loaf proved to be delicious. A great shame that we live 60 miles away, but it is certainly an incentive to return in the nearest future possible.

Popped over to Porthcawl today and was drawn in to Home and Colonial due the quality produce we could see, freshly made Welsh cakes amongst other things. Bought two delicious Custard Tarts which were later consumed with a cup of coffee on the seafront and a large granary loaf which provided sustenance for lunch. The loaf was really good, malty, plenty of grains and, importantly, well tasty! Will be returning here on our next visit to Porthcawl. Everything on display: meats, cheeses, pasties, pies, scotch eggs etc. looked really good. Staff were polite and prices seemed really reasonable. Definitely superior to any chain type store.

Love Home and Colonial foods. They offer a variety of foods. All freshly made. I always like to pay a bit extra for good quality, local and handmade. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars due to limited amount of pasties. Once they are gone, they are gone. Would be nice to to be able to get throughout day rather than in morning but it does vary each day depending on how busy it is. Much better than the chain businesses.

This week I was shocked to see the bad publicity that this place has received all over social media - I’ve eaten here forever , since the very first mukta mahal , ok I don’t eat Indian often but when I do I use various Indian all around the areas so I can change it up a bit - today I ignored the bad publicity and give these guys a chance , I ordered the chicken tikka korai amongst other things and I have to say the curry was by far the nicest curry I have ever eaten from a takeaway_, it was delivered on time - piping hot and full of flavour - the chicken was great quality and despite the negative criticism I will keep using these when I choose an Indian , I am under the impression that the hygiene inspection includes paperwork in their findings and this probably had an impact - the owner of this place is 34 years old - he’s giving it a go and ok he’s made a mistake but hopefully people will give him chance to put it right and use it as a learning curve - hopefully this business will remain open

Eight of us visited here for a mid week birthday meal. We all had a fabulous meal at a reasonable price. A big variety on the menu along with the specials board. Nothing was too much trouble for our waitress, who is working while at college. We were offered extra chips and we were also given cream to go with a birthday cake we had brought ourselves. The lady in the kitchen was fab too, nothing was too much trouble and the food was superb. I will definitely be visiting again.
