Graylings in West Devon

Used to really like the fish and chips here but recently it’s gone down hill badly, Cod full of bones , plaice that had clearly been hanging around ages and tasted off chips soggy will not be back Will drive a little further for better quality

Rang up to place an order and was given a time slot for collection….the only fish available on menu is cod, plaice and scampi and not Haddock which I assumed was a standard fish available in every fish n chip shop!…but that wasn’t a big problem so I ordered 2 cod, scampi and large chips….expecting everything to be made fresh, the cod was dry, 6 pieces of dried up small scampi was like a supermarket frozen own brand and chips were not only soggy and luke warm and portion was no where near a large…..very disappointed given the reputation this takeaway has been awarded and price doesn’t reflect the poor quality….i don’t normally review takeaways but given this is an area catering for tourists passing through the standard needs improving.

Fab little Fish and Chip shop. Was staying in nearby Winkleigh and ordered food on the east to use web site. Chose a time for pick up and the food was being freshly prepared when I went to pick up. The food was delicious. The staff were friendly and I would definitely go back if in the area.

While the food is fine, there is an undeniable air of unprofessional behaviour from some of the older members of staff towards their young coworkers. Whilst waiting an unnecessarily long time for what ended up being middle of the road fish and chips, I witnessed some members of staff being incredibly rude towards the younger girl working at the counter. Although this young lady tried to remain professional and put on a brave face, it was clear to see that she was mortified after being berated in front of everyone. It's one thing to take ages preparing mediocre food but to patronise and belittle the teenage staff trying their best to help in the midst of such chaos is reprehensible. It is unacceptable to shout at any employees, especially in front of a room full of customers waiting for their food. I hope that the managers/owners can learn to treat their younger members of staff better in the future.

We heard about reviews and they’re all founded. Lovely chippy. Don’t go to north tawton expecting a sit down meal as restaurant side isn’t open. Go to Oakhapton if that’s what you want it’s still run by same business

I love this fish n chips shop! Part of the reason I decided to come live here! I have not been disappointed! Have lived here several years now and have relied on them very often.

We are in the area on holiday and Graylings was recommenced to us but we should have read all the bad the reviews before ordering. Ordered through click and collect as advised on the website as we were told the fish is only ever cooked to order. When we arrived to collect about 10 minutes before the stated time there were loads of portions of fish already cooked and being kept warm in the heated cabinet, that was a bad sign straight away. Got it home unwrapped it to find the fish swimming in oil, not only was it oily but the batter was hard and chewy and the little bit of fish inside was dry, obviously the fish had been kept warm to long or it had been fried twice....thankfully the chips were edible as the fish went in the bin... Lets just say a very bad experience never to be repeated.

We had take away fish and chips with friends whilst staying locally. The service was excellent and very friendly. The fish and chips were amazing. Highly recommended.

Staying in the area for a month and had a craving for fish and chips ! Have to say this place looks like a great traditional chip shop. They were cooked to order and I waited about 7 minutes. When I got home and unwrapped them they were fabulous. Good piece of cod, excellent batter, great chips and some mushy peas. Need an excuse now to visit next week !

We went to Graylings as it is described as an award-winning fish and chip shop. We were very disappointed with both the fish and the chips. Inside the batter our cod was very dry, as if it had been sitting around all day before being cooked. The chips were limp and soggy with no crispness at all. And we both agreed that the whole meal was distinctly lacking in flavour.

An account required to order fish and chips or wait an hour for a phone order or stand outside and take your chance what is the world coming to pure lazy!!!!!

Got there by accident. Pouring down with rain. The smell of fish n chips coming over the shops was brilliant. Quiet afternoon so we were served very quickly. Massive portions, v v fresh, superb taste, excellent quality.. Good vfm. Definitely one of the best fish n chip restaurants in the area. Well done...we will be back..

We always bring any visitors here as never disappointed. Staff very friendly. Also the dog is not forgotten. We take home a sausage for him!!

Very nice fish and chips and freshly cooked. The fish was the best take away fish I have tasted in a long long time. There is also a sit down restaurant at this location. I was slightly taken aback when my scottish bank note was paraded round the staff to see if it could be accepted. To try and save the moment I offered to pay using my scottish bank card. I am certain I will have no problem spending the english note given in my change. Apart from that I would happily recommend you try this chip shop and I will be back as we are staying here for a few days.

We had really nice fish and chips to eat in, with plenty on the plate. The staff were very friendly and the surroundings were pleasant and clean.

Popped in here as I was passing. Very clean inside and thought I'd grab a sausage and chips before I went back to the car park at the co-op. The quality of the chips and sausage were good and the batter was nice but had an anxious wait as my car park ticket was due to expire and had a ten minute wait for my food. Had I known I'd have skipped it but that said, I'll probably go in again but give myself more time to be served.

Just spent £17 on food, chips greasy, we couldn’t eat them, fish was no better!! The only thing edible was a sausage. Please be aware as we certainly won’t be going there again

This restaurant chain have recently opened in Okehampton ...after a shaky start [ young staff needing training and long delays as they chatted rather than served ] things are significantly improved. The standard of fish at Graylings is amazing ...so fresh you would think Okehampton is by the sea ! Lovely choice of fish , fishcakes , burgers to eat in [ limited but very clean seating ] or take away . The [ still young ! ] staff were friendly and helpful and efficiently dealt with our order . We can recommend Graylings for high quality fish and chips etc !

Friendly staff, excellent food served promptly in an immaculately clean restaurant area. Prices are probably a little higher than your average chippie but then it’s not your average chippie. Well done Graylings!

Fish cooked well but chips kept warm for too long, so not a good texture or taste. Choose haddock as at least it is freshly cooked.

Admittedly, it was the lunchtime service (12.45pm), but at £3.05 for large chips, I don't expect them to be cold. Paid circa £8.50 for fish and large chips. Had a nice piece of fish that was freshly cooked, but disappointed this time, unfortunately.

Friendly, welcoming employees. Lovely fish and chips - weren’t greasy and good portion sizes. The special was good value - fish, chips, mushy peas/beans with hot or cold drink and bread and butter £10.95. The bread was actually buttered rather than margarined too! Deserts available. Really clean, even the loos. Can seat around 35 people on 6 or 7 tables. Takeaway looked popular too. Quite hard to park in the village but possible if you are patient and willing to walk a little way.

We often stop here for Fish & Chips on the way home from our travels. We can ring ahead and our supper is waiting for us when we get there. This is 'Proper' Fish & Chips and it is well worth waiting for if you don't phone ahead and have to wait in a queue. If you prefer, you can 'eat in' when the food is just as good. Highly recommended!

Wish there's a way to put it like a 4.5/5 but I cannot seem to do it. My family owned a fish and chip shop back where I live to which I tried several fish and chips in the UK but I would say this place has the best fish & chips in the UK so far. The batter was much good not soggy as well as good chips!

Waited a long time for oil soaked fish with fabby wet oily batter and squishy nasty soggy oily chips. Utterly disgusting ..

A lovely takeaway, the fish was fresh and good sized chips, and the meal itself was not swamped in oil.

We stayed at a Barn conversion in the area and this fish and chip restaurant was recommended to us. The cod and chips was fantastic I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

As usual fish ok but chips sh1t ordered early but still waited 45 mins crap and as I ordered early I expected fresh food fish was acceptable but I ordered scampi which was in the heated area when I arrived they served it with my fish etc 45 mins later when I got home they were so dry they were in edible so chips only for me never again !! And most miserable owner ever

We were driving through when spotted this place. Not expecting much on a Monday lunch time. But this place was excellent, chips were cooked fresh and the staff were friendly. Excellent chip shop!! Now on my top 3 list!

Taking a bottle of wine to a chip shop is novel. Eating in the restaurant is a comfortable and relaxed experience. They provide wine glasses. The service is efficient and friendly, and the food is excellent. It felt special.

Immaculately clean chip shop. Went there as we had been out for the day and our usual one is closed on Mondays. There was nothing wrong with the food but it wasn't as good as our usual - chip shop in Hatherleigh. The fish was slightly dryer, the chips weren't quite as nice and the mushy peas were a bit too thick/dry. As I say, nothing wrong but not the best locally.

Always love there fish and chip's and there spicy chicken burger, stop in today we both had large cod and chips, and large it was, we was so full, neither one off us could finish, but was so tasty as always

Have always had super fish and chip takeaways at Graylings but it's always worth trying the 'eat in' service as the staff are very friendly and it is a lovely, relaxed alternative to other options such as pubs and restaurant chains!

Visited with my 9 year old son on a whim as new to the area and thought we would give it a try. What a find! Brilliant service, lovely clean, modern setting and the best bit was you could sit and eat in the little restaurant or take away. We arrived only a few minutes after opening at 5pm but already there were people seated and a steady flow of customers followed, for a mid-week visit it was pleasantly busy. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Food was cooked freshly for us and was superb, portions were good and child meal was great value for money. Toilets clean. Overall would highly recommend and shall be visiting our new 'local' chip shop again.

Regularly use Graylings takeaway whilst there might be a slight delay for fish at least you know that you are getting freshly cooked food which is always great quality. Whilst I haven't used the restaurant it looks very good and always has customers seated

Lovely fresh fish and chips! Perfect after a day of exploring the countryside. We stumbled across Graylings by accident and nearly didn't pop in as the que was so long! So glad we did! Obviously popular with the locals too! Definitely recommend!

This was truly the best fish and chips I have tasted in many a long year. The service was Excellent.

We popped in here for lunch.It was very clean,the young waiter was more than attentive and the food delicious.Certainly go here if in North Tawton.

Best place to get chips in Mid Devon. Staff who serve are great. Love all the food there. Never sat in so don't know about that.Only minor niggle is they are very tight with how many chips you get. A large chips is like a regular chips anywhere else. Why is this? Lets face it a spud don't cost much.

We are in North Tawton very regularly and we nearly always have a take away fish and chips from Graylings. We have absolutely no issues with the quality of the food, but each time have come away thinking the chip portion has been a little on the small side. To give an idea of comparison, two large portions at home (in Kent) will often do our family of six. In Graylings, for the same price, we need to get at least three large portions of chips - come on Graylings, I so desperately want to give you 5 stars!!!

Fantasic haddock and chips. we go once a week from okehampton.it puts all the other ones to shame. always well wrapped and stays lovely and hot.also the staff are friendly always pleasant and cheerful.

Great fish & chips, staff very friendly, the only issue was parking as I visited on a Friday evening. Feel for the locals as other customers just abandon their cars where they choose bringing the town to a standstill

Visited whilst on holiday. Was recommended and we were not disappointed. Excellent fish (COD) and chips at £5.65 which were freshly cooked and very hot. Interesting parking close by with the locals thinking that parking close to your car makes it more interesting - not !!!!Worth a visit and would visit again (if we are back on holiday in this neck of the woods).

Thoroughly enjoyed our fish n'chip lunch while visiting relatives in Devon. Crispy batter and moist fish. Service was great and staff were very pleasant and friendly. Ample parking in the street. Would use again.

Stayed in north tawton during one week rental. Taste and quality is second to none, haddock was gorgeous! Highly recommend.

Locally Graylings have a reputation for excellent fish and some people travel miles to get it. Chips can be variable, depending on the season, as new potatoes don't make the best chips. The fish however can't be faulted and if you don't like fish you can choose something like a burger or chicken fillet in a bun.There is a restaurant if you wish to eat in instead of taking your meal away.

Wonderful freshly cook food every time we go...the fish and fish cakes are lovely..would highly recommend a try and a visit...friendly staff and friendly service...give it a go..

We all enjoy fish and chips with mushy peas, it's a British tradition and at Graylings they know about tradition, in fact they have created a business by producing the best in fish and chips and they even encourage you to eat on the premises, this of course used to be the norm, alas it is seen as an old fashioned high labour unnecessary addition, but not at Graylings, they have made it into an art form, excellent service, pleasant staff in a spotlessly clean environment, family friendly and good old fashioned service, a real treat to visit.

Visited this chip shop for dinner as we were staying close. Very good value for money and amazing food. Well worth stopping off if your in the area and fancy chips. Best curry sauce I have tasted.

Took the kids for a chippy tea whilst on holiday in the area - it's fab! Great food, I'm fussy about my fish and chips, and really lovely service too. The restaurant is really clean and fresh. We loved it.

Decided to have fish and chips for tea tonight,as there are no decent fish n chips to be had locally we travelled the 25 minute journey to Graylings.We arrived at 6.50pm on a Saturday,the takeaway part was quite busy, However we were in and out with our order in around 3 minutes so don't be put off if there's a queue.We both opted for cod and chips,absolutely the best fish n chips we've had in a long time.Would not hesitate to recommend and will certainly return.One word of warning................parking is a bit of a nightmare,you may have to use the carpark at the top of the street and walk to Graylings.

Have been meaning to have fish and chips here for a while. Today was the day. Stopped by around teatime on a Friday so it was just starting to get busy but we were made eminently welcome by one of the staff and served at the table. Very friendly lady who treated us well throughout....served us with thoroughly excellent fish and chips and offered us lovely tasty curry sauce as well as peas. We had a meal deal with tea and bread and butter and also had a delicious ice cream afters too. Everything was truly excellent, from start to finish. The decor and cleanliness was beyond reproach and it was served promptly too. Thoroughly recommended and we will look forward to returning another time.Thank you.

Cod, Haddock or Plaice at Graylings you have a choice locally sourced fish, fresh, local potatoes great experienced staff with a warm and welcoming manner, top marks for this local purveyor of England's favourite dish, Fish and Chips eat in or take away the food is excellent the restaurant clean and efficient worth travelling to North Tawnton just to experience....

Because of the weather we decided not to travel away from main roads. So Graylings it was. Another nice fish n chip supper, four of had the house special which includes bread and butter a pot of tea and mushy peas. All for less than £10 each, excellent value. Why go anywhere else for fish and chips when Graylings are local and brilliant.

Good tidy with good fresh fish and chips. Strongly recommend. Not much to say except it has won national awards and you would be mad to go anywhere else for chips and fish.

We live pretty local to Graylings and its by far the best chippy in the area.Its a bit pricy but in this case you really do get what you pay for.You can also eat in, which is what my wife I do from time to time..Its always consistant and serves really good Fish and Chips

Being a northern lad living in West Devon for over 40 years, the one thing I always missed was good fish and chips. Well Graylings changed all that, we try to visit about every 6 weeks and they have never failed to deliver. Because of the distance we travel we always use the restaurant. Paid a visit last night and it was lovely, haddock special for just under £10 I would agree it's not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for and this is worth paying for. The added enjoyment is from the banter with the waitress, she's brilliant.

All cooked to order not the cheapest BUT. The Best bar none. Chips cooked in Lovely dripping well worth the trip out

Everything was fine, a little slow but I wasn't in a rush. The fishcake would be fine to eat in but uncutable with an ordinary chip shop fork. I would go back and enjoy a nice piece of cod next time. Lovely waitresses.

We had sit down fish and chips in the early evening, really well cooked and good portions. Very friendly, efficient service and good value (House Special is £9.85 for large cod and chips, bread and butter, mushy peas and a pot of tea). Finished off the meal with a good selection of Lovington's ice cream, the best of the local ice cream offerings in my opinion, the Beulieu Blackberry is lush.

Graylings restaurant and take-away in North Tawton has a strong local following.We visited the restaurant for early evening food, very clean and welcoming, food was good quality and kids really enjoyed it. If your looking for a quality fish and chip venue, Graylings is it.

Graylings do the best fish and chips in the south-west. We visit every time that we are in Devon.Both shops are fantastic.

Great food always worth visiting. You can phone and order your food and it will be packed up when you arrive. Recommended.

Graylings is very much worth a visit when in the North Tawton area. These fish and chips and delicious, the batter is crispy but light and the chips and chunky and moreish.The staff at Graylings are refreshingly chirpy and polite. I am yet to be disappointed and will certainly make every effort to return soon.
