Did a Google search for our last night at butlins for a good Chinese, found golden house, wasn't disappointed, we had crispy duck, special fried rice, ribs and crackers, very nice and crispy duck was already shredded which is helpful, overall it was a great choice and would definitely go back. I always order from china garden but when I went to collect my order and they didn’t have it I realised I had place it at the wrong one. Honestly can’t believe anyone prefers this one. The egg fried rice had next to no flavour, Chips were the best thing on the plate but even they reminded me of kebab chips. The sweet and sour chicken balls tasted like undercooked batter and the sauce was very bitter, chicken chow mein was over powered wich I’m guessing was with say sauce as the dish was a very very dark colour.

I travel the length & breadth of the UK - I love Chinese / Thai / Vietnamese food, so always try a restaurant in a new area. Sadly, I have to say that the Golden House in Minehead is probably the worst I've ever had a takeaway from. I ordered a King Prawn Kung Po with Egg Fried Rice + Prawn toast (tasteless) as a starter. The food was served (in the dedicated takeaway area) extremely quickly - the speed of service concerned me. I took it back to the cottage I was renting about 5 miles away, & settled in for (what Ithought) would be a nice meal. The meal was APPALLING - Egg fried Rice barely acceptable (dry / tasteless) - the KP Kung Po had NO cashew nuts (or even peanuts for a cheaper version), only 6 very small prawns - NO flavour at all - except for SALT -- I've never had a takeaway with SO much salt - it actually burned my tongue with the 2 mouthfuls before I "binned" the whole meal -- the Bamboo shoots were so solid it was like trying to chew a tree branch ! NO flavour at all - except for SALT ! A local told me that he'd never had a bad meal from the Golden House - all I can say is that he'd never eaten a REAL Chinese meal !

We just had a wonderful dinner at Golden House in Minehead. The food was delicious and the hosts were lovely. Will dine there again!

I had the vermicelli noodles and crispy chicken with chilli. I highly recommend them. My partner had beef with mushrooms on a bed of egg noodles which was equally as delicious. It all came with complimentary prawn crackers and we finished it off with Banana fritters . It’s off season at the moment but I’d advise you book in advance in the summer as it gets really busy.

I can't decide which is nicer. The vegetables noodles are classic but the chewy chunks of Tofu with mixed veg is really good too, and the seaweed is crispy.

Great food lovely staff made to feel welcome and special. Staff attentive even though busy. Nothing too much trouble.

Last night I got a takeaway from The Golden House for my birthday, the food was hot and tasty. I have never been disappointed with my food from The Golden House but it really seems that the new owners know what they are doing. Great value and good portion sizes, give it a try you will not be disappointed.

Had a amazing takeaway tonight for the bf 30th lockdown birthday! Couldn’t fault it! The satay chicken were amazing went really well with the cucumber! It tasted fresh an hot. Brilliant food, well done golden house! ❤️

First day out of lockdown and a treat of a takeaway meal to look forward to, unfortunately it turned out to be the worst meal ever! The duck portion was so dried up it was inedible & sweek & sour pork tough as old boot. Have visited the restaurant so many times over the years and always had lovely meals - so out of character, what has happened to it? Very dubious at trying again, now hear the Alcombe one is good.

Went to the Eat Festival in Minehead today, and really wanted to eat the street food but the weather was so dire that we decided to treat ourselves and eat here.The food is lovely, although we ordered far too much but the waiter kindly packed what we couldn't eat up to take home.Just a couple of criticisms: (1) the decor inside the restaurant is so dated and drab; and (2) our waiter was so dour, and acted like they were doing us a favour by serving us. Needs to change their attitude.

Me and my partner visited this restaurant on a Saturday, we were greeted by a very polite young girl and swiftly seated. Our drink order was taken and then we placed our food order. We were regularly attended to and the food was delicious, no issues. The restaurant was very busy as was the takeaway section, pleasant surroundings and an overall awesome dining experience. Would recommend.

As always we dined here two nights on our holiday.The food is always hot and fresh, most enjoyable and good value for money. It is not salty or greasy either which is healthier and more enjoyable.The only thing that I could fault is that it is a little cold in there, so take a wrap and/or wear something warm.The restaurant is extremely clean with a warm, welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.Thank you Jess and staff for making my family welcome and for your quick, efficient, friendly service.

We were very much disappointed in the restaurant. I don't remember when and where we have seen tables covered with plastic table clothes. The waiter was not very friendly, and we didn't feel that we were welcomed. We regretted later that we didn't leave immediately. The food was tasteless. We don't recommend this restaurant to people who really love Chinese meals.

Expensive compared to our local chineese but of reasonably good quality and friendly service We had take away and it was good to see that they had a second entrance for take away you did not need to go into main restaurant

Visited this Chinese restaurant after being messed about at the Taj Mahal Indian and walking out.

This seems to be the only chinese resteraunt in Minehead, so we went although it was empty on a Staurday night!

Big mistake going should have figured why as place empty! Service terrible, food over cooked they need to invest in a wok not a deep fat fryer as everything fried to crisp with heavy taste of oil!!! Very pricey not sure Egon Roney would still recommend!!

Enjoyed several meals here, every one delicious. Had the place to ourselves which was a shame, but the take away appeared busy. Restaurant could do with a makeover, but that did not detract from our visit.

It's always a treat to dine here. Love the food! I would dine here even more often if I could! I do wish there was more parking, however.

Absolutely rubbish food!!! Chicken was raw!!! Took it back to be told it was the sauce (no red sauce in chicken satay) reluctantly changed it!!! China Garden in Alcombe is so much better and friendly staff

We visited here and shared a few dishes and the food was great. The atmosphere was a bit off putting but they were really quiet. Staff were nice but didn’t get a smile TIL we left! Quite good value but they could do better with their menu, the menu for two was £40 and didn’t include duck.

I went here with mum for an evening meal. It was so quiet and there was no one in there. I felt awkward the whole time there as the staff members were not very warm or attentive. It was like they were trying to get rid of us the whole time because they were more focused on the takeaway section. With that said, the food was nice. I didn't really like how this restaurant doesn't really cater for sharing food with your family like other Chinese restaurants do. It was heavily focused on ordering your own meal.

Myself, my husband and our two friends went to Golden house on our long weekend stay in Minehead. we have all frequented numerous chinese restuarants in the past but this had to be, for all of us one of the very best. the restuarant was not busy, which was a shame but the service and food was well above average, in fact the food was the best Chinese we had ever had. thumbs up to the people who run it as the service was excellent also. would recommend to anybody who likes chinese to go there.

We were staying in Minehead whilst visiting friends for the May Bank Holiday and found this little Chinese tucked away by accident and to our surprise, it really didn't disappoint.

excellent standard fresh good sized portion food was hot tasty enjoyable restaurant was quiet it was early evening mid week but it was not overpriced or under cooked nice atmosphere and very clean

a small chinease up a side street looks nothing from the out side but the food is superb would recommend anything with king prawns delicious not very busy or expensive décor and having soy sauce on the table without having to ask reminds me of the 60s service was very good so good we went twice in 2 days

Easy to order a takeaway and collect in a time that suits. Good always delicious and fresh . Staff are lovely. I recommend as a takeaway although not used the restaurant but it looks fine. Really tasty

This was our 3rd visit to this restaurant and it was almost as good as the first.

Used to be the best Chinese restaurant and takeaway in West Somerset for around 40 years but has been taken over by new management and nowhere as good as it used to be. It's ok for a takeaway after the pubs turnout but would not be my first choice of a restaurant meal

I hate leaving a bad review but the food was awful.we had special fried rice which wasn’t to bad although full of onions,pork balls which were chewy and chips that were hard. It’s a shame as the food used to be delicious.

This is the only Chinese restaurant in Minehead. The food is OK and the price is not too high. It is just a shame that sometimes I have found the staff in the take away section rude.

Having just returned from China were only the best food was afforded to us this restaurant offered us great value for money delicious food. We had pork ribs for starts and chow mein and pork curry. All dishes were delicious and service was swift. Would highly recommend.

We have an evening meal here twice each time we visit Minehead, we love this place and have been dining here for a few years.

Bought a take away from here an was very disappointed with it i had the chicken balls an curry sauce my partner had the lamb curry we both had what was surpossed to be egg fried rice but there was what looked like no egg an very little sping onion the curry sauce was more like water the chicken balls were cold it used to be a nice place to eat from but never going back

I decided to go for a Chinese meal for a change. The food was fairly average, the service was OK and the portions were also OK. I felt the price was a little on the high side for an average experience. It's also worth noting that the prices charged are higher than those displayed on the board outside. Evidently, the menu board outside the restaurant is actually the takeaway menu. It's likely I would choose somewhere else to dine next time.

A new place for us, but we were given a very friendly welcome and enjoyed excellent service.... and a good old chat setting the world to rights as we were leaving. Lovely food....the crispy duck and pancakes deserve a special mention, but it was all delicious, as was the Chinese beer. All very good value for money. If and when we return to Minehead, we would certainly revisit the Golden House.

Foul soggy food! Very expensive, poor, rude service, will never ever use this place I thinking can live without Chinese in my life, Don't order the duck with pancakes didn't even bother to provide the sauce to go with it, free prawn crackers didn't cut it

We have been visiting the Golden House for over thirty years and it is still one of our favourite restaurants. We visited the restaurant on Valentine's evening and despite being busy in the restaurant and take-away we were served and received our meal without delay. The duck chinese-style was succulent and tender but would agree that the food warmers would have been appreciated as with any meal, even at home, side dishes soon go cold but this did not spoil our meal by any means. The staff were very busy but attentive, maybe the little Chinese waitress comes over as brusque but is possibly a langugue thing - her English is better than most people's Chinese!The drinks might be 'expensive' but no more so than two English pub/restaurants I have visited earlier in the month.

My experience at the Golden House ,from the start was very poor,As we entered we weren't greeted very well as the staff were busy decorating For Christmas.The atmosphere and environment was very cold ,and inhospitable.The food was terrible ,seemed reheated ,dry and barely edible.If Egon Ronay (recommended on the place mats) he's gone roamin to a different restaurant ! Friendly staff, always busy on a Friday and Saturday so I suggest to book in advance if your wanting to eat in, I had a lovely meal with friends, all our food was delicious, will definitely be returning. Highly recommend!

We dined here last night for the first time in two years and unfortunately won't be coming back. The service was poor & the food average. It's new owners I understand but very disappointing.

Had friends / family here for weekend so recommended Golden House , wish I hadn't our fried rice arrived 5 minutes before our meal , which wasn't hot ! when we dined here before we had hot plates for the dishes to go on, this time nothing ... although another group of diners did !!!! They started clearing away the plates before we all finished which is just plain rude I'm local but I won't go there again & I won't recommend it

Only us in the restaurant, food came quickly and was delicious. Very expensive for drinks in my opinion. The chill ribs were really good and plenty of them in the large portion. The Chinese curry and chow mein were good size portions too and tasted great.

This welcoming restaurant provides excellent food, efficient and pleasant staff in a homely atmosphere. Either a la carte or take away. Always a pleasure to visit and enjoy.

Our second visit this year whilst on holiday so good we are booking again for Thursday. The food is delicious , and the service excellent. The staff are friendly and they can not do enough for you. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Always a warm welcome when we enter. food is quick and very tasty and brought to us with a smile try the mixed sizzler platter beef is tender and juicey and you can't fault the service.

We are a family of 7 holidaying at Butlins, we had a meal in the restaurant.The food was very bland and tasteless, could've done better myself..everything seemed boiled, not fried has it should be for Chinese food.The staff was rude and uninterested and seemed to rush you..Bad atmosphere and very expensive for what you get..quality and quantity POOR!

If Egon Ronay ever did recommend this place (see place mats) it was a long time ago! The food was not well presented a spoon and fork to eat with and I have eaten much better Chinese food. The take away seemed to be doing good trade as we were seated by the door to the take away counter and toilets. It was very expensive for what was a low key restaurant. Situated about 15 minutes walk from seafront.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here without booking a table. The menu was extensive and we ordered Lamb curry and Special Fried rice. Both were delicious and the fried rice was beautifully presented.

Over priced for a Chinese and expect better for than the cost, very salty.It also smells of drainage in there which puts you off, it also looks like it needs a good clean

We came here this evening (27/07/16) after a long day at Hestercombe Gardens. Although we had pre-booked our table, it wasn't very busy at around 1945hrs. The decor inside was typically Chinese with 80s pop music playing in the background. I wouldn't say it is fine dining, because the tablecloths were those plastic easy-to-clean ones and there were no candles and wine glasses on the tables. Also no chopsticks here, just spoons and forks. The prices were cheaper too. I had won ton soup which was full packed full with won tons and made up to the top with soup (great!), whilst my partner had a hot and sour soup which was more sour than hot. There was also prawn crackers (no dip) that we used to snack on whilst waiting (extra charge). My main was lamb with garlic and ginger with boiled rice, whilst my partner had a special chop suey with egg fried rice. The rice dishes were quite large for one person but we were hungry so we didn't mind. The lamb in my dish had a texture that was tender yet different from any lamb I had (English/New Zealand) and there was lots of it. My partner enjoyed all elements of his main and was very full afterwards. Overall, good value for money (just over £35 including drinks) and the service was quick and efficient. No fortune cookies though, just a chocolate mint crisp resembling those of Elizabeth Shaw.

The food was excellent. However the prices let them down as both the food and drink were quite expensive - £3.30 for a pint of lemonade.

Have used the TakeAway side of the business and some have been really good. But then some have not been very good.I see another review about moody staff... I can agree with that.Quite expensive really, they love big 'cash' orders. Easily spend over £25 for two peoples takeaway.I will use again but am certainly on the lookout for something else to try/another Chinese Takeaway ideally. I will promise that the next one we have which is poor they will be having back - loudly.

I don't want to sound too harsh or judgemental, but not a particularly good service, Moody staff and the food was tasteless. Expensive compared to other Chinese restaurants. I wouldn't recommend.

Ate here on Saturday night, probably 3 other tables so not overly busy although they seem to be busier with takeaway orders that kept whizzing by. Very poor service started by a waitress that took our drinks order by writing it on her hand, shortly followed by a different lady that seemed more interested in what was going on around her. She slouched against the table behind her to take our food order which was odd and whilst we were ordering she started to talk to someone who came in the front door which was very rude. When we asked questions she seem very impatient and not at all interested in helping us. The food was ok but not amazing, no chopsticks...I won't be returning in a hurry

it was awful, they changed the recipe of the pork balls they were too fatty and chewy, and the bananas in the banana fritters were cold, will not go back anytime soon, not the same without the old owners. We are from Minehead.

The pork balls were unusually chewy then I realized it was because of the fat they were too fatty as well as chewy. The Bananas in the Banana fritters was cold when they used to be hot by the old owners, afterwards the Bananas left me with a yuck feeling. Won't be going there again. A Minehead local.

We love eating here they do the best crispy duck, dim sum, Malaysian vermicelli, barbecue spare ribs, and too many dishes to mention. Yum yum can't wait for them to re-open after their month break for the Chinese New Year

Had a lovely evening meal here. Staff were helpful and even as one was new and learning, we were never without a helpful hand nearby. Food was tasty and good value. Will visit again.

Fabulous takeaway from the Guys at the Golden House again. Service is always really good, although they could do with expanding their takeaway area as it can be like sardines in a tin on a Saturday night! Great portions, lush food and not a too bad a price. The best Chinese in Minehead. Would be excellent if they would deliver!

Had a takeaway meal from here Sunday evening. Food was at best very bland, curry sauce thin and tasteless. You could have glued wood together with the sweet & sour sauce. Ordered the meal in advance. Although the restaurant & takeaway was empty, we arrived to pick up our "meal" it was clear the had not even started cooking it and as we had a taxi waiting with the meter running we were not best pleased. I believe this place is under new ownership and it's more than apparent that the new owner is aware this is the only Chinese place in town as is to say the least over confident that the people of Minehead will suffer poor service & below standard food - your wrong!

I usually prefer the starters to the main course when enjoying a Chinese meal but I found the appetisers at Golden House a little disappointing. We had the mixed starter for two which included satay chicken but there was no satay sauce, just dry chicken kebabs. There was however a serving of barbecue sauce to go with the ribs but this didn't taste of anything much apart from being a bit salty. We had however ordered a satay platter as well but the sauce with this tasted not very much of peanut but had too high a level of chilli for our taste. The main courses were on the other hand rather good. I would recommend the special chow mein which had large pieces of beef, pork and chicken, together with large plump prawns and topped with an egg. The chicken with cashews was covered in more cashews than I have ever seen with this dish anywhere. Nevertheless it all seemed a bit expensive. So you pays your money and takes your choice. I wouldn't rush back but I might eventually return if I lived nearby.

Starter of pork ribs were tasty, but curry was bland in comparison to the usual (large potions of rice, two of us could have shared the rice that came with my curry). My partner enjoyed her crispy lamp and hoisin sauce. Prices were reasonable and comparable to other restaurants in the area. Little to no atmosphere, however, we did eat late for the area I believe (after 9pm).

If you want traditional Chinese, then this is the better of the two Chinese restaurants in Minehead. An unassuming exterior hides a light and airy interior. The food is really quite good. Our favourite soup is the Crabmeat and Sweet corn! Yum! On this visit we ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken and Pork and King Prawns in Oyster sauce and Sze Chuan style. They serve large, juicy prawns here which is a plus! We like that you can order your sweet and sour battered or unbattered, Peking or Hong Kong style. And the food comes out really fast! You could easily be in and out of there within an hour. If we lived in the area we’d eat there regularly. We’ve been to this Chinese now several times over the past seven years and it’s nice to see the same faces every time we return – a family-run establishment that welcomes you to dine like family! It is a little on the pricey side as dinner for 4 of us came to £78.40 so by the time you’ve left a tip, 4 soups and 4 main dishes can easily run you upwards of £85.00. But it will definitely be a memorable and delicious experience for the money.

Visiting Minehead and fancying a Chinese, we first ate here on Saturday 18th July, on which day it was not only pretty full but also dealing with droves of takeaway customers taking carrier bags full of food at frequent intervals. However, despite being this busy, we were dealt with in a friendly and efficient way and the food was really nice and reasonably priced. On the strength of this we came back the following night Sunday (when it was quiet), had different choices from the menu, and were just as happy with the food. Just one slight niggle, the drinks were not cheap, a small Chinese beer being £3 something, and a half decent bottle of wine being £16 or so. This compares badly with Wetherspoons Duke of Wellington just up the road, where we were staying.

I have eaten here happily for many years and have written a previous glowing review but unfortunately, this restaurant has recently had new owners and new chefs. The service is still good in the restaurant but the portions are smaller so the food becomes more expensive. The food is also now often bland. It seems to be very hit and miss which is such a shame as it used to be delicious. Minehead only has one Chinese restaurant so it's hard to never go but it certainly is not as good as is was. I hope it gets better as its a bit of a local institution!

Something has changed for the worse at the Golden House Minehead we have been a regular customer for four years but recently the quality has gone down to such a low level we do not intend eating there again.very sad as it used to be so nice. The chicken now tastes totally different. Very low quality. This gives me no pleasure to say but I would not recommend this Chinese for a take away.

Very good food, they were even happy to make a favourite dish we wanted that was not on the menu. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for

I patronised the take away shop, the food was acceptable a bit pricey but could have been better. The noodles were cool by the time I got to eat them some 7/8 minutes later and the pork balls whilst not underdone, could have done with a bit more cooking. Not a lot of chicken in the chicken chop suey and yes they charge extra for prawn crackers. I am used to a better quality but until I find this in the area, I will have to satisfy my occasional craving for Chinease food at the Golden House.

On a busy Easter Saturday our large party of 8 was finding that most of Minehead's restaurants were fully booked for dinner. Chinese was not our 1st choice and we only ate here because they made an effort to accommodate us even though they were busy. We took ages to order (huge amount of choice) and enjoyed a bit of banter with the waitress as a result. The food was excellent and to be recommended, the Prawn Crackers are excellent and the beef succulent. My only problem with this place is that it does not have any real identity, it is not much to look at from the outside and the inside makes no impression. I know this is a restaurant and you go there to eat but I also want to enjoy its ambiance and feel its character. It is almost as if this Chinese restaurant took over from a cafe and has not made its mark since? Because the food is good this place could be so much better if it just had a makeover.

I've lived in Minehead for years and think the problem with the take aways is they're a little expensive and average as there's no real competition. This Chinese has always been the better of only 2 in town. Well after tonight's meal I will never go back! Sweet & sour pork balls that were inedible, bland fried rice and chewy chilli chicken!!! Positives........none!!!!

Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. The rest of the party wanted Chinese, so I just went along. Wow! Delicious! Not sickly sweet and sour, perfectly balanced and delicious. Generous proportions too

Don't be put off by the faded 70's decor. It will be retro chic soon anyway.The meal was better than I expected, served quickly, piping hot and very tasty. I've been in plenty of more attractive chinese restaurants, but rarely eaten better.
