Giggling Squid - Welwyn Garden City in Welwyn Hatfield

Lives up to its name. The Salt and Pepper Squid starter is a must. Self-made. I have ordered it as a desset more than once

3 adults had Sunday lunch in the Giggling Squid in Welwyn. We have been to lots of Giggling Squid restaurants and really like their food which is consistently good everywhere. We had the set Tapas which was very tasty. Because it was a Sunday it was fairly empty so the atmosphere was not great. Service was pretty good. Do we still be back!

The Giggling Squid Thai Restaurant was a wonderful place to eat. A lovely location, tasty cuisine, and super service.

I am sorry I have to give a score of 2 , and that is because the food is excellent or it would have been a 1 . The service is shocking . The restaurant was not full , we sat down at 8:35pm and ordered drinks around 8:45pm we had to ask where our drinks were ? They arrived 9:20pm .The mojito ordered was sub standard ! Then we had to ask to order starters , the food was delicious . Then our mains came , again very nice . We had to keep attracting attention to ask for more drinks and water .The bill was slapped onto our table at 10:30 , just after we’d ordered another bottle of wine ! The waiter saying ‘No hurry’ but we are closing at 11pm ! It was a Friday night ? He reappeared 2 minutes later with the card machine , and we said ‘so there IS a hurry ?’ We also mentioned the delay in ordering our food at the beginning of the evening , no reply was given . We paid and had to take the wine home , as the music was turned off and the lights were being turned off ! Poor show

Absolutely delicious food and all the waiters were so lovely! It was really busy and two of the restaurants we tried to go to had already turned us away due to too many people, however giggling squid got us in really quickly. The service was incredible and the sticky chicken is absolutely divine!! Also lots of vegetarian options for one of my family members. 100% recommend.

If you are thinking about going to this restaurant then stop thinking and GO! The food is delicious and plentiful. You have lots of choices to choose from. Waiting staff are attentive and if anyone has a food allergy they are really serious about what food you can in fact order. The atmosphere is busy but you are not left waiting for service. I will deffo be going back and recommending to family and friends and anyone who will listen. You won't be disappointed.

Visited again after a while for a business lunch. The food was very good and the service considerably improved.

Marlon and Kwaab were very accommodating and attentive staff. Loved every second of it, perfect place for a second or third date. Would definitely return!! Amazing cocktails!

Busy Restautant, wait times quite high. Food was very nice, although about 6 or 7 items were off menu when we arrived 7:30 on a Sat! But menu quite large so plenty to choose from.

Very nice food, but three stars because last night I went to the loo and one of the waiters came in, took a slash and then walked out without washing his hands.

Food is really delicious but there were so many dishes unavailable. There was 3 of us and 2 chosen mains unavailable, we made our second choices only to be told they were also unavailable. Really not good enough, why when customers are seated can they not be told what is unavailable!!!! Spoke to manager who said he would take this on board, sadly the next party that arrived were shown to their seats and no information given!!

I opted for the Zingy Prawns as starter and Thai green chicken for mains. The sauce on the prawn starter was good, nice and hot. Unfortunately, the prawns had not been de-shelled. This wasn’t as described or expected and made for a practically impossible dish to eat without a mouthful of shell. Unpleasant. The Thai Green chicken dish was pedestrian. I had high hopes but left disappointed with the experience. Such a shame.

The best restaurant in Welwyn GC

Food was very tasty. I wanted some pineapple rice but I couldn't have it unless I bought the tapas bundle. I didn't want the other dishes in the bundle so I ended up having no rice. Bit disappointed as it is not offered just as a side dish. Most restaurants would be accommodating but not here. Tried it once. Might go again one day.

First time here. Didn't even know it existed. Food was amazing! Bit pricey but you get good quality food for it. I'd recommend the duck stir fry. I will be back again for sure.

I have to write a review where warranted. I had dinner tonight and the food was great, fresh and tasty. The staff members I interacted with were knowledgeable, friendly and patient. The restaurant aesthetics are modern, clean and cosy. Even though I’ve eaten here several times before, I just had to leave a review after tonight. Just a quick observation, the panels that are in front of the restaurant make it very hard to see the actual front and you could be missing out on potential customers walking by.

Food is really good. Please check how spicy their dishes are. Welcoming atmosphere and good decor. We on Sunday evening, not very busy, service was excellent.

I've visited many different branches and this one isn't up to standard. The signature salt n pepper squid was soggy and the massaman curry was too salty to eat. They at least swapped the curry for an alternative that was edible but not great. Can't recommend anyone to eat here

My husband and I visited the Giggling Squid today at lunchtime for the first time. The food was excellent and of a high quality. Very fresh and tasty. The price seemed reasonable. Impressive choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The place was quite empty, only two other tables were occupied. The location is fantastic. Here are our impressions of the exterior of the restaurant. There is a lot to improve in our opinion. The front of the restaurant is partly obscured by a few slightly shabby looking screens and the signage is not easily recognisable. The awning looks dirty and has significant algae growth on it. The restaurant could easily be missed by passers by, particularly when driving up Howardsgate. It's a shame because the location as such and the interior are pleasant.

The atmosphere is really nice, the decor is very tasteful! And the food... Is amazing! We went for lunch and had the giggling set and the sticky chicken with coconut rice. Everything was great! So much so that I forgot to take pictures 😅

Chicken satay was overcooked so it was very dry. Service was slow and inattentive. Atmosphere was warm on a cold day.

The giggling squid is easily my favourite place to eat in Welwyn Garden City, the food is delicious, the staff very friendly and helpful, and it's a lovely atmosphere in there too.

The service was very good the waitress took time to explain the menu i was choosing, the food was hot and delicious.There were 12 adults and 1 baby, we all came from different areas, that's why I gave 5 stars, I would go back again when I'm in the area. THANK YOU

This was our second visit to this restaurant the first time we came there were items of the the menu which was disappointing and when we returned for the second visit last night the same items were still of the menu. We found the staff undertrained and as soon as we’d finished our starters I told the waitress to give us some time before the main course then as I was saying this they brought our main course out I told them to take it away and give us five minutes. This restaurant needs to train its staff

I understand how tricky it is for restaurants to reconfigure dining during Christmas season as they have large tables to accommodate. But we arrived at 5.30 as a table of two and were seated in direct line of draughty front door on a table that they had clearly just had to put somewhere without thinking about the customer experience. It was a largely empty restaurant, because of the early time and the experience just felt a bit soul-less. Shame as we have enjoyed the Harpenden site.

Food and service was excellent. Well presented and lovely layered flavours. Noisy in there though, hard to have a conversation as we were iin a group and you couldn't hear the person 2 seats away! No sound deadening furniture or floor etc. So only 3 stars for atmosphere.

We went last night as a party of 7 the service was loverly and the food on the whole was very tasty. Unfortunately within a couple of hours of leaving the restaurant one of our group was violently ill, although many of us ordered similar dishes and enjoyed them with no problem, he was the only one who ordered the prawns to start and the fillet beef as a main. On the whole the restaurant is loverly but they need to be aware of this issue.

After 20 minutes, no-one had come to take our order (not even drinks...). We tried to flag down a waiter several times, who seemed to see us but was just not interested. Even if it's not your section or whatever, if you're just standing there, chip in or at least alert whoever is responsible for the section! In the end we just left since it didn't seem we were going to get food any time this century... (This was the second time we ate here, the first time service was bad as well but could be forgiven as it was really busy and there was obviously not enough staff. This time it wasn't busy at all and staff just weren't interested. We won't be back)

Brilliant take on Thai cuisine. Don't underestimate the spice! The mushroom larb will make you cry if you eat the dried chili. But everything's very tame if you avoid eating the chillies. Overall there is a beautiful balance of flavour and great variety of choices. I wish I could've eaten more dishes, I had fomo for every plate that went to other tables! Updated summer 2023 - the mushroom larb was off the menu. I appreciated the change in variety however it felt like things were shifting towards blander western takes on eastern cuisine across the other choices. The food and service quality were still above par for the area but the menu is certainly a bit less unique

The restaurant is airy and light. Easily found and accessible. The food is tasty. The staff are helpful and friendly.

Visited Giggling Squid for the first time last night - the food was so good and all the staff were lovely. We shared Chicken Wings, Pork Dumplings & Salt and Pepper Squid starters then I had the Thai Melting Beef main with egg fried rice, the beef did literally melt in my mouth and the flavour was amazing. Also they have this really cool way of dealing with food allergies - you scan a QR code and tell it what you're allergic to then it tells you which dishes are safe for you to order from the menu 👍

The staff were so attentive. We went for my mum's 79th birthday meal. She loves the food, service and we bought a cake with us and the staff made it so special.

If I could give a zero for service I would. After making my reservation I contacted the restaurant to request my booking be shifted by half an hour due to unforeseen circumstances. When speaking on the phone the gentleman that I spoke to was very dismissive and made me feel unwelcome prior to even arriving at the restaurant! When we did arrive however, there were some younger waitresses that were incredibly welcoming and kind while we decided on our food and drinks. After our food had arrived and we were eating our waitress changed to a middle aged lady with short brown hair who, with no exaggeration, made me feel more uncomfortable than I ever have in a restaurant. Her demeanour from the beginning was poor and it felt like she was rushing us out of the restaurant as she asked us if we wanted any desserts and rushed us to pay the bill following our meal. Me and my friends would have been understanding of this had it been close to time of closing but this was at 9pm!? We had not seen each other for a while so were hoping to enjoy the company for a little while longer. Unfortunately due to the waitress and what felt like her racially motivated biases we were forced to leave early having had our night ruined. I’d like to stress this is the only negative reviews I have ever left but my hand was forced due to this ladies behaviour. The only saving grace for this restaurant was our earlier waitresses and their welcoming nature.

I find the decor very pretty and it's always busy when we come here. I like the massaman curry with coconut rice. Very fragrant and flavoursome. The staff could do with some extra training though as it was difficult trying to get their attention even though they keep walking past us without looking. The food also took a long time to arrive and we didn't get our mains at the same time.

Booked a meal here on a Wednesday evening at the spur of the moment and the place was quite busy. The staff were attentive, always smiling and polite, and the food was amazing. Everything came shortly after ordering, we didn't have long to wait. Definitely return.

Nice Griggling Squid branch at Welwyn with the brand's unique flowery style decorations. It has lots of table configurations for different party sizes, with some tables by the large windows giving a relaxing view of the greeneries of the Welwyn Parkway. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was as expected of the brand and was nicely presented, although we found that the chef was rather heavy-handed with salt or sauce. The pad thai, for example, had none of its delicacy left from heavy seasonings.

A great family Birthday Evening with lovely food and service. We all had a variety of meals and all were great. I focused on the Red highlighted which were customers favourites and I can see why.

We ordered take away through deliveroo and had serious issues with deliveroo not delivering the order but saying it was delivered. I called the restaurant and the staff were so friendly and helpful and apologised even though they were not at fault. They said they that the order had not yet been picked up and that they would contact deliveroo to organise a driver. Deliveroo told them a driver would arrive however after 20 mins no driver collected the order. I said that if it was okay I would collect the order. Amazing staff remade all our food and included a piece of mango cake as it was my birthday. Thank you so much staff at giggling squid.

Came for a little celebration with my partner as I had visited the giggling squid alone a couple months back during a spontaneous lunch visit (have posted a review for that visit). The Bangkok sharing platter is so good, sadly we were advised by pilar that there was no spicy sausage left, but she was able to swap them out for some dumplings (which were divine) . The food is amazing , the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable and I couldn't recommend this place enough. I could easily spend over £100 for 2 people and walk out of the restaurant with a smile on my face. The food is full of flavour, piping hot and you are made to feel welcome by an amazingly attentive group of people. Actually Stop reading this and go book a table. Recently been to this place, was amazed by the quality of the food and the ambience Especially special thanks to Stefanie for helping us to have a good quality time. Beautiful place to eat with your significant other on a date night. Inside can be rather loud in rush hour so we chose to sit outside and it was stunning. Staff super friendly and food was amazing. Not just the taste but also the incredible presentation! Note to owners: please fix the front door, incredibly squeaky and annoying for customers sat outside. Thank you 👍

Dined here previously, food was delicious but not this time. Green curry sea bass has too many branchy hard vegetables that takes away the authenticity of the flavour. Starter portion very small for the squid with turmeric. Really expensive night for what I received and disappointing.

Nice place with pretty good food! Don't go here if you want an authentic Thai meal, but the green/ red curries were actually great. Food isn't that spicy, so make sure to ask for extra chilli if you want to feel it.

The experience came as quite a surprise for a Tuesday evening dinner. Usually love the food at Giggling Squid. However this visit, food and service were both amiss. Starters were missed, mains delayed, plates and cutlery missed, one mains dish missed (and needed reminding over 3 times). Pad Thai was tasteless and green curry was so meh. The drunken noodles were still 👌🏼 One thing to commend was their commitment to ensure the food allergies were considered diligently. The server was thorough and the food was labelled very clearly to not confuse.

What a beautiful and quirky interior and lovely, friendly staff. The menu was a great mix of Thai favourites and house specials at decent prices. We all selected starters to share, delicious and plentiful. The main courses were a selection of traditional noodle and rice dishes, cooked perfectly and seasoned so well. It was our first visit, but we'll be back for sure

My husband and I visited the wgc brunch on a Sunday busy lunch, the food was delicious , staff were friendly and the manager Stefania was very hands on and made sure our meal was good. Would definitely be returning !

Whilst the food was great, the service was terrible. The restaurant wasn't even ¼ full when we went. Took a long time for staff to take our order, we had to ask where our drinks were around 20 minutes after ordering, had to chase our starters and were told after 45 minutes if waiting that one wasn't available anymore. Then had to wait for our main and ask again, to find that the waiter had allowed us to order two dishes they knew to be out of stock, so we had to tonirde again. At no point did anyone ask us if our meal was ok, not ask if we wanted more drinks.

Good food but ran out of stuff on menu.

Had a meal here this evening for my husbands birthday. We've eaten here before but only the tapas lunch, which we enjoyed, so decided to try some alternative dishes. We weren't disappointed, the food was delicious, big portions, friendly helpful staff and the restaurant decor is very pleasant. Highly recommend it.

The food is tolerable. Waiters forgot to bring few dishes. Few items missing went missing when ordered take away and checked at home. We waited 40 minutes to get our food. The lady who was serving forgot what we ordered. Fried rice was terrible. I would not mind driving to Hertford or St Albans to enjoy better food. Extremely pricey for what it is worth. I would definitely avoid. Except the location, interiors and deco - everything else is very average really.

A lovely evening spent with family. My first visit and won't be my last. The decor and atmosphere is quirky and something totally different from the norm. The food we ordered was authentic and extremely well cooked and presented. Well done to the friendly staff for making us feel welcome and comfortable. Can't wait to visit again

First time here!! Gorgeous meal this evening. We was served by Daisy who was so lovely and attentive. I couldn't quite work out a flavour in one of my dishes and she was on hand to help! Needlessly to say I was still unsure. So i guess I'll have to come and try it again. Was lovely to see the place so busy on a Tuesday. I will definitely be back.

Delicious food and excellent service 😋

We visited for Fathers Day and were really disappointed with the overall service. The restaurant had enough staff but there seemed to be a lack of organisation. The food was reasonably good but I think I will stick to getting a takeaway like I have previously, if I were to have Giggling Squid again. Also not sure how the restaurant can always have a list of missing items on the menu every time we go or order, it is disappointing.

Been here a few times as I am like the food. The food was very good once again. The service wasn't as good as the food. We had to wait a while for the drinks to arrive (had to ask) and when they did my order was wrong. They checked it quickly so that was ok. I think they may have been onboarding new staff or were short staffed. It wasn't bad enough to not make me want to return. The place gets quite busy and it therefore gets very loud. If there were no roadworks going on I would have opted to sit outside. If you like Thai food you should give it a go

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Welwyn, and it has earned it due to its good food quality, along with very lovely staff and proximity from train station. It has good variety of food in the menu, and surely you can also request for recommendation. We had variety of food including prawn, noodles and thai specialities and surely they didn't disappoint us. Massaman with coconut rice was yummm. With a starter, drinks and main course it costed us average of 32 pounds (we went as a group of 4) each. Some pics attached for reference

The worst possible experience at this restaurant The chicken satay came with a long human hair wrapped around it! Whilst apologetic the staff appeared to think they could just replace the dish. This made me gag to say the least, still feeling nauseous several hours...

Great food as always, first time at the Welwyn branch but they did not disappoint. All food was delicious, fast serving even though at 7pm and with a bit of customers in, very nice staff. Will defo return !

Let me first express my gratitude to Amelie and a few of the waiters for the wonderful and cordial service they provided during my daughter's birthday. We appreciate it. At least 90% of the food we ordered at the restaurant was excellent; we can give it a good 5 stars. The Chang Mai platter's chicken wings smelled awful, and the Tom Yom rice was very bland and of poor quality. These were the only minor issues. As I've already mentioned, the remainder received 5 stars. We went there for a birthday, and everything was wonderful. The atmosphere is very family-friendly. When we made our reservation or arrived, the restaurant failed to indicate or explain the 10% service charge, which we found to be unacceptable. It's acceptable to pay a large bill for a family of four or five at around £126 (it has to be cash!), but adding a service charge without informing the customer is unacceptable and has completely changed our experience in this restaurant. We left without feeling completely satisfied, and we are not sure if we will return. We paid the bill in full, including the service charge, and left a generous tip. The manager claimed that you would receive a complimentary dessert for a birthday party, but we did not receive this; instead, one ice cream was provided for one person (imagine three kids on the table), which was very embarrassing. We had a sizable birthday cake and a great cup cake, which we even shared with guests, but why does this kind of deceit have to occur? The 2* review is the result of the above factors, and I hope it will be useful for future visits to this restaurant. This review is now posted to TripAdvisor, Google reviews, and restaurant feedback.
