Booked for a family meal for my daughter’s birthday- received a voicemail 2.5 hours before our booking, cancelling our reservation due to staff shortage! Obviously, no time to book anywhere else. Unacceptable- how not to run a business!

Excellent eggs Benedict with salmon , our go to brunch. Very friendly efficient service even when very busy.

We called there today for a bite to eat and a hot drink. Absolutely fantastic. The food was lovely,reasonably priced and the service was great. The staff were friendly and polite. We would definitely recommend and will go there again when in the area.

We visited the Gatehouse Bistro for the first time this evening and shared some tapas and a bottle of wine. The food was perfect, service was faultless and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We will certainly be returning. Great value for money, tasty food and a pleasant environment, what is not to like! We would highly recommend the Gatehouse Bistro.

My visit with a friiend on a Saturday afternoon recently was ok. The customer service overall was quite good, a member of staff was a little bit unhelpful to begin with but the level of service and attitude improved when I voiced my disapproval. Cafe downstairs was quite busy but nice atmosphere among diners / customers and very nice upstairs with views of castle and part of the town centre. I will return and visit again.

Good substantial food. My only regret was not ordering one of the delicious-looking cakes before I eat my main course. By the time I’d finished my pie and chips, I certainly didn’t have space for anything else. Pleasant and efficient staff. Would certainly go back next time I’m in Caerphilly.

A nice evening could have turned into a disastrous one ! I am 61, fit for my age and like to dress up and wear strappy heeled sandals when I go out. I love to dance and the music was perfect as you could request a song. All was going well until I slipped on the dance floor and went down onto my bottom. Ok I thought that was embarrassing but carried on dancing. This happened 4 times !! The dance floor is a small area of wooden floor ? However it was as if grease had been applied to it. I spoke to the owner behind the bar and he laughed and said but it’s only you who is falling. When I looked everyone else had flat shoes on. The first time it happened I can accept my sandals didn’t help but after 4 times the Floor condition was defo in question. When I got onto my knees to get up ,my natural coloured tights were absolutely filthy black. I have a photo of this too. I took off my sandals to end the night and my feet were black as coal through my tights which were thrown out. Unbelievable. This floor should be cleaned thoroughly before someone breaks a bone or worse !!

Had a good meal downstairs Left just as the singers clocked on.....a little toomuch when you ve got to shout across the table,and went upstairs for a cocktail( they wouldnt serve us one downstiairs) Lounge was great....only one at the bar,us. Then a few more arrived,then a few more,still havent placed our order. We left....the young barmaid working by herself was clearly inexperienced,overwhelmed and stressed! It also didnt help that the owner was there and didnt step in What a let down

I take my mum here most weeks either for breakfast or lunch. It’s not the cheapest place to eat , however we like the atmosphere and the staff. I don’t understand why you now have to go to the counter to be served especially when there are already lots of customers and staff walking around. Not sure we will return. I be given the gatehouse four out five for the staff and cleanliness.

My wife and were quite impressed visiting the upstairs bar a good while ago when they opened. Cool jazz music playing in the background, lovely warm atmosphere feeling quite upmarket and slightly retro. Took friends there last night hoping for a good catch up, drinks and more of the same. Walked in and first impression was like walking into a nightclub/disco bar. Dance music playing so loud we were all having to shout so conversation was difficult. Inexperienced bar staff not very welcoming. Had we wanted this, we would have gone up the Cwtch for the same but with cheaper drinks. I'm not sure if they have nailed the identity of what they are trying to be. It wasn't too busy at all, average age seemed about 56. I'm not an old moaner and I've done the loud music / club scene. I think there's massive financial potential with people my age having disposable income to spend in nice surroundings. Equally there are places in town to cater for youngsters. Identify who your market is and go forward either way. But I think you have missed to mark with this as it is.

Myself and my bridesmaid visited here for breakfast the day before my wedding 21/11/22 on a very wet Monday morning. We were warmly met at the door, seated and provided with menus. Initially glad to be in out of the rain just ordering drinks and then breakfast when my husband to be arrived. The lovely staff chatted to us and upon finding out we were getting married the next day, put some wedding music on for us, congratulated us and made us feel truly special. What was even more heartwarming is that this establishment was previously a coffee shop, my Nan's favourite place to go, and it was lovely sitting in there remembering those times I had with her the day before my wedding. So a massive thank you, for making us feel truly special and we loved the Welsh cake pancakes!! See you all again soon.
