Ego at The Groes Wen Inn, Penhow in Newport

Always enjoy our treat nights at Ego Penhow as a couple. It’s always a family choice if we are celebrating a special birthday or Anniversary too. Bonus having a gluten free menu (although I noticed not as much choice on the gluten free sweet menu on our last visit) they offer regular dis punts to members too which is a nice bonus.

This could be a lovely venue. It’s a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, nicely decorated, but sadly it’s always let down by service. I’ve visited several times since it opened, each time hoping for a better experience, but sadly not. We booked and pre ordered afternoon tea, we arrived on time, but had to wait stood in the doorway for 10 minutes whilst they got our table ready, once sat down it took a further half an hour for our tea to arrive, and another 15 minutes for our food to arrive.. which was all preordered and deposit paid, so really no reason for it not to be ready for our booking time. The food was lovely though; and a great selection for afternoon tea at a fair price. And once the food has arrived our waitress was very attentive, but sadly no contact at all before our food arrived, nor any apologies or acknowledgment of the very long wait.

Awful over priced food. We will not be going back. We had a party of 8. Men had mixed Kebabs at £24, 3 small pieces of meat on skewer with the rest bulked out with pepper and onions. 1 margarita pizza, Raw in the middle. Sea Bass cooked well bit such a tiny portion with less than 1 new potato chopped up under the fish with a sprinkle of salad. Chicken dish was not as described on menu and rather tasteless. Deserts were ok. We actually all left hungry. Service awful. All the food came out separately including sweets. One person had completely finished by the time another came out. Normally we’d obviously wait but it took so long the food went cold. Drinks that were ordered came out at the very end with the bill so had to gulp back or leave them. Stupidly We did the polite thing. Never complained and actually left a tip to the already massive bill. It was a special birthday occasion. We will not be returning and wouldn’t advise anyone else to go.

Would have been five stars except for the long wait for our drinks. We had a table booked for 6.30pm was shown to the table straight away after a wait of 5 minutes the drink order was taken we waited 40 minutes and had to ask for the drinks then another 8 minutes before the drinks arrived. After that the service and food was excellent nice atmosphere and comfortable highly recommend

My wife found a very sharp piece of metal in her garlic mushrooms which resulted in a cut in her mouth. The manager accepted responsibility, apologised stating that it had come off a baking tray and we would get the starter for free. My biggest complaint is had my wife swallowed the metal it could have caused some serious internal damage, so £6 ,off a £190 bill is hardly taking the situation seriously. Also the medium fillet was well done and an adult dessert was brought by mistake for my 10 year old who then insisted on eating it making her unwell. Overall an extremely poor experience.

Took my mum here for a Mother’s Day afternoon tea. It was lovely all home made cakes & tarts were warm & very nice. Service was great as always. I have been for lunch and also Sunday lunch and can honestly say I can’t fault the food or the service.

Had a very enjoyable lunch with my elderly mother. The waitress was great, and they made sure we had a table with plenty of room for her zimmer! A cosy, country pub feel with a restaurant rather than pub menu, plenty of choice.

Local location, ideal for lunch, we used a 50% off email offer. We both had the lamb loin but swapped the goats cheese mash for chips and added hummus and pitta bread. This was one of the best lamb dishes I have ever eaten., we couldn’t fault it. The only reason I couldn’t give a 5 was because we were both cold. A heater was situated close to our table but it didn’t improve the temperature of the area we were seated in.

Another lovely lunch at The Groes Wen. Good service, great food, open fire. Good choice of food from simple snacks to hearty meals. We will definitely be back.

A nice ambiance and the staff were very nice,helpful and attentive. Everyone enjoyed their food and said they would like another visit. It was noticeable how young all the staff were there,but this was not an issue,as they were all a credit to the restaurant. They were all immaculately presented and nothing was too much trouble.

We were a party of 4, had booked in advance. First visit. Friendly welcome and shown to our table without delay. Very friendly and attentive staff. No starters. Mains - 2 fish, 1 sirloin steak and 1 lamb rump. All food was delicious and excellent presentation. Only slight disapointment was my lamb was not pink as stated on the menu. It was medium, tasted okay but I did state rare/pink when ordering. Deserts were fine. We booked to return on 5th April. The pub has a very welcoming and relaxed environment. No hesitation in recommending it.

Good pub food in nice surroundings with friendly, interested staff. Tasty steaks and fish were our selection. All satisfying and good value

A last minute decision to go. It’s so convenient for those of us living in the village. Food served promptly. Background music was background and low key. So often places have blaring “pop”music which spoils and evening. The serving staff were very engaging . Food opinion mixed…..the steak meal was excellent and cooked to perfection. The Greek salad was enormous but limited.It consisted of huge amounts of cucumber and halved cherry tomatoes,a couple of bits of tastier sun dried tomatoes and a scattering of capers. The dressing lacked flavour. The feta cheese was a single large wedge instead of the usual crumbled intergrated Presentation. Disappointing ,considering the price. The wine prices are higher than other establishments

We do not live local but always enjoy our visit when we are in this area Make an effort to dress up to go as feel it’s an evening out rather than just food

Love this restaurant. Food is delicious and the layout of the restaurant is great. We went for a birthday celebration and they were very attentive and decorated the cake we had brought with sparklers and strawberries. I would recommend them to everybody.
